Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the fatigue effects induced by a futsal-specific protocol (FIRP) on sprint performance and the kinematics of the lower limbs. Twenty-one futsal players participated in this study and performed a protocol to simulate the futsal demands. At pre-protocol, half-time and post-protocol, the athletes performed 10-m sprints that were recorded for kinematic analysis. Continuous relative phase (CRP) was calculated to assess the inter-segmental coordination. In addition, vertical (KVERT) and leg (KLEG) stiffness were calculated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures was used (P < 0.05). The main results showed that sprint time increased (P < 0.01) post-protocol when compared to pre- and half-time conditions. Lower values of the step rate (P = 0.01) and higher values of the leg angular velocity (P = 0.02) were verified at the end of the FIRP. The CRP of thigh-leg and leg-foot and the stiffness did not change over the protocol. In addition, the high correlation of CRP between the conditions revealed no changes in coordination pattern. We concluded that futsal related-fatigue induced a decrement on sprint time, changing the kinematics of the lower limbs (decreasing step rate and increasing leg angular velocity). However, neither stiffness nor intersegment coordination during sprints was affected by fatigue.

Abstract:The primary aim of the present study was to investigate how the fatigue induced through a repeat sprint protocol acutely affected different measures of neuromuscular performance. Recreationally trained basketball players (n = 25) volunteered to participate in the study, and performed three countermovement jumps (CMJ), as well as three drop jumps (DJ) prior to a fatiguing repeat sprint protocol. These procedures were repeated two minutes, and 15 minutes, following the protocol. Various force-time metrics were extracted from the jump tasks, and linear mixed models with subject ID as the random factor, and time as the fixed factor were used to investigate changes across the three time points. To account for the performance during the repeat sprint protocol, a second, two factor model was performed with time and repeat sprint ability (RSA) as the fixed factors. Study results indicated that the sample as a whole merely experienced fatigue-induced decreases in jump height from pre-repeat sprint ability protocol (pre-RSA) within the CMJ compared to two minutes post-repeat sprint ability protocol (post-RSA1) and 15 minutes post-repeat sprint ability protocol (post-RSA2), while jump height within the DJ was only significantly different from pre-RSA at post-RSA1. Further, despite the implementation of the fatiguing RSA protocol, over the course of the three time-points, participants seemed to perform the two jump tasks more efficiently, seen through significantly lower contraction times, greater eccentric (ECC) peak power, and greater ECC mean deceleration force within the CMJ following the RSA task. The two-factor model revealed that several significant time*RSA interactions were found for metrics such as ECC peak velocity and peak power in the CMJ, as well as reactive strength index in the DJ. This suggests that the level of RSA influenced changes across CMJ and DJ characteristics and should be accounted for when interpreting fatigue-induced changes in neuromuscular performance.
Neuromuscular Fatigue and Recovery after Heavy Resistance, Jump, and Sprint Training

Abstract:Purpose Training methods that require maximal intensity efforts against light and heavy resistance are commonly used for athletic development. Typically, these sessions are separated by at least 48 h recovery on the assumption that such efforts elicit marked fatigue of the central nervous system (CNS), but this posit has not been well studied. The aim of the study was to assess the etiology and recovery of fatigue after heavy-resistance (strength), jump, and sprint training methods. Methods Ten male athletes completed three training sessions requiring maximal efforts that varied in their loading characteristics: (i) heavy-resistance exercise (10 × 5 back squats at 80% one-repetition maximum [1RM]) (STR), (ii) jumping exercise (10 × 5 jump squats) (JUMP), and (iii) maximal sprinting (15 × 30 m) (SPR). Preparticipants, postparticipants, and 24-, 48-, and 72-h postparticipants completed a battery of tests to measure neuromuscular function using electrical stimulation of the femoral nerve, and single- and paired-pulse magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex, with evoked responses recorded from the knee extensors. Fatigue was self-reported at each time point using a visual analog scale. Results Each intervention elicited fatigue that resolved by 48 (JUMP) and 72 h (STR and SPR). Decrements in muscle function (reductions in the potentiated quadriceps twitch force) persisted for 48 h after all exercise. Reductions in voluntary activation were present for 24 h after JUMP and SPRINT, and 48 h after STR. No other differences in CNS function were observed as a consequence of training. Conclusion Strength, jump, and sprint training requiring repeated maximum efforts elicits fatigue that requires up to 72 h to fully resolve, but this fatigue is not primarily underpinned by decrements in CNS function.

Effects of Exercise-Induced Fatigue on Lower Extremity Joint Mechanics, Stiffness, and Energy Absorption during Landings

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the effects of two fatigue protocols on lower-limb joint mechanics, stiffness and energy absorption during drop landings. Fifteen male athletes completed landing tasks before and after two fatigue protocols (constant speed running [R-FP] and repeated shuttle sprint plus vertical jump [SJ-FP]). Sagittal plane lower-limb kinematics and ground reaction forces were recorded. Compared with R-FP, SJ-FP required significantly less intervention time to produce a fatigue state. The ranges of motion (RoM) of the hip were significantly greater when the athletes were fatigued for both protocols. Knee RoM significantly increased after SJ-FP but not after R-FP (p > 0.05), whereas the RoM of the ankle was significantly greater after R-FP but lower after SJ-FP. When fatigued, the first peak knee extension moment was significantly greater in R-FP but lower in SJ-FP; the second peak ankle plantar flexion moment was lower, regardless of protocols. After fatigue, vertical, hip, and knee stiffness was lower, and more energy was absorbed at the hip and knee for both protocols. Hip and knee extensors played a crucial role in altering movement control strategies to maintain similar impact forces and to dissipate more energy through a flexed landing posture when fatigued compared to when non-fatigued. Furthermore, SJ-FP seems to be a more efficient method to induce fatigue due to less intervention time than R-FP.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the effect an individual's exercise training type will have on muscle fatigability during repetitive contractions induced by Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES). Thirty-four subjects comprising of competitive athletes and controls were recruited into three cohorts: Endurance (runners/cyclists) n = 13; nine male, four female; 27 ± 8 years old, Explosive (Lifters/Sprinters) n = 11; nine male, two female; 30 ± 7 years old, and controls n = 10, six male, four female, 26 ± 4 years old. Subjects were placed in a custom-made leg extension rig, and received NMES against a fixed resistance (NMES-FR), to the Vastus Medialis muscle resulting in isometric leg extensions, at a duty cycle of 1 s on/3 s rest, for 20 min. The force of the isometric contractions was recorded using a Hogan MicroFet2 dynamometer, and three separate fatigue metrics were calculated to compare the different cohorts, sports within each cohort, and gender within each cohort. For every fatigue metric, the endurance group fatigued significantly less than both the explosive and control cohorts, with no difference observed between the explosive and the controls. Within each cohort, no significant difference was observed in any fatigue metric between sport or gender, but these comparisons lacked power. The results show that only high capacity endurance activity will have any effect on reducing one's fatigability during repetitive NMES. The implications of this conclusion can aid in the development of NMES regimens for use in healthy populations, such as athletic training or astronaut musculoskeletal countermeasures, as well as clinical applications when fatigue is to be minimized.

Abstract:Background: During competition and training, exercises involving the lungs may occur throughout the sport, and fatigue is a major injury risk factor in sport, before and after fatigue studies of changes in the lungs are relatively sparse. This study is to investigate into how fatigue affects the lower limb's biomechanics during a forward lunge. Methods: 15 healthy young men participate in this study before and after to exposed to a fatigue protocol then we tested the forward lunge to obtain kinematic, kinetic changing during the task, and to estimate the corresponding muscles' strength changes in the hip, knee, and ankle joints. The measurement data before and after the fatigue protocol were compared with paired samples t-test. Results: In the sagittal and horizontal planes of the hip and knee joints, in both, the peak angles and joint range of motion (ROM) increased, whereas the moments in the sagittal plane of the knee joint smaller. The ankle joint's maximum angle smaller after fatigue. Peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and peak contact both significantly smaller after completing the fatigue protocol and the quadriceps mean and maximum muscular strength significantly increased. Conclusion: After completing a fatigue protocol during lunge the hip, knee, and ankle joints become less stable in both sagittal and horizontal planes, hip and knee range of motion becomes greater. The quadriceps muscles are more susceptible to fatigue and reduced muscle force. Trainers should focus more on the thigh muscle groups.

Abstract:Nineteen professional football players (Age: 26±5 years; Height: 1.84±0.08 m; Mass: 83.4±8.9 kg) completed three x 30 m maximal acceleration sprints from a standing start before completing the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1. Three x 30 m maximal acceleration sprints were then repeated post-fatigue. Light gates recorded sprint times from 0-5 m, 0-10 m, 0-15 m and 0-30 m. Force platforms collected ground reaction force of the first stance phase of the sprint run. Differences between pre- and post-fatigue were observed in the sprint times over 0-15 m (P = 0.015; CI [0.007, 0.110]) and 0-30 m (P = 0.004; CI [0.056, 0.234]). Peak medial-lateral ground reaction force was lower (P = 0.045; CI [-0.146, -0.005]) post- than pre-fatigue. The ratio of force were significantly different between pre- and post-fatigue for the medial-lateral and anterior-posterior comparison (P = 0.017; CI [-0.063, -0.010]), and the medial-lateral and vertical comparison (P = 0.012; CI [-0.036, -0.007]). Football players altered their sprint mechanics to reduce medial-lateral loading and orient the force in an increased anteroposterior and vertical direction in order to maintain 0-10 m sprint performance. Practitioners should observe medial-lateral force contributions and improve sprint technical efficacy.

Abstract:Understanding the changes in running mechanics caused by fatigue is essential to assess its impact on athletic performance. Changes in running biomechanics after constant speed conditions are well documented, but the adaptive responses after a maximal incremental test are unknown. We compared the spatiotemporal, joint kinematics, elastic mechanism, and external work parameters before and after a maximal incremental treadmill test. Eighteen recreational runners performed 2-minute runs at 8 km·h-1 before and after a maximal incremental test on a treadmill. Kinematics, elastic parameters, and external work were determined using the OpenCap and OpenSim software. We did not find differences in spatiotemporal parameters and elastic parameters (mechanical work, ankle, and knee motion range) between premaximal and postmaximal test conditions. After the maximal test, the runners flexed their hips more at contact time (19.4°-20.6°, P = .013) and presented a larger range of pelvis rotation at the frontal plane (10.3°-11.4°, P = .002). The fatigue applied in the test directly affects pelvic movements; however, it does not change the lower limb motion or the spatiotemporal and mechanical work parameters in recreational runners. A larger frontal plane motion of the pelvis deserves attention due to biomechanical risk factors associated with injuries.
Effects of Neuromuscular Fatigue on Eccentric Strength and Electromechanical Delay of the Knee Flexors: The Role of Training Status

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the effects of fatiguing isometric contractions on maximal eccentric strength and electromechanical delay (EMD) of the knee flexors in healthy young adults of different training status.Methods: Seventy-five male participants (27.7 ± 5.0 years) were enrolled in this study and allocated to three experimental groups according to their training status: athletes (ATH, n = 25), physically active adults (ACT, n = 25), and sedentary participants (SED, n = 25). The fatigue protocol comprised intermittent isometric knee flexions (6-s contraction, 4-s rest) at 60% of the maximum voluntary contraction until failure. Pre- and post-fatigue, maximal eccentric knee flexor strength and EMDs of the biceps femoris, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus muscles were assessed during maximal eccentric knee flexor actions at 60, 180, and 300°/s angular velocity. An analysis of covariance was computed with baseline (unfatigued) data included as a covariate.Results: Significant and large-sized main effects of group (p ≤ 0.017, 0.87 ≤ d ≤ 3.69) and/or angular velocity (p < 0.001, d = 1.81) were observed. Post hoc tests indicated that regardless of angular velocity, maximal eccentric knee flexor strength was lower and EMD was longer in SED compared with ATH and ACT (p ≤ 0.025, 0.76 ≤ d ≤ 1.82) and in ACT compared with ATH (p = ≤0.025, 0.76 ≤ d ≤ 1.82). Additionally, EMD at post-test was significantly longer at 300°/s compared with 60 and 180°/s (p < 0.001, 2.95 ≤ d ≤ 4.64) and at 180°/s compared with 60°/s (p < 0.001, d = 2.56), irrespective of training status.Conclusion: The main outcomes revealed significantly higher maximal eccentric strength and shorter eccentric EMDs of knee flexors in individuals with higher training status (i.e., athletes) following fatiguing exercises. Therefore, higher training status is associated with better neuromuscular functioning (i.e., strength, EMD) of the hamstring muscles in fatigued condition. Future longitudinal studies are needed to substantiate the clinical relevance of these findings.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of different levels of muscular fatigue on vertical jump perfor- mance, vertical stiffness, and intralimb coordination. Seventeen physically active men performed two fatigue protocols (low volume and high volume) composed of continuous vertical jumps on separate weeks. Jump height, vertical stiffness, and intralimb coordination were measured during countermovement vertical jumps prior to and immediately following the fatigue protocols. The jumps were performed on a force plate and filmed with high-speed cameras. The continuous relative phase was calculated as a measure of intralimb coordination. Mixed-model ANOVA was used to compare the variables between conditions and times. The fatigue index was greater in the high-volume protocol (27±12%) than in the low-volume protocol (16±7%). Jump height decreased (p≤0.01) after the high-volume protocol. Vertical stiffness decreased (p=0.05), and the continuous relative phase of thigh-shank coupling in the ascent phase of countermovement jumps increased (p=0.04) after both proto- cols. In conclusion, jump performance was only affected by higher fatigue indexes, while vertical stiffness and intralimb coordination were affected similarly irrespective of the fatigue levels.
Effect of Fatigue and Graded Running on Kinematics and Kinetics Parameters in Triathletes

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cycling-induced fatigue on subsequent running with different ground inclinations on triathletes. Twenty male triathletes ran on a treadmill at individual speeds, on three inclines: level (0%), 7% uphill (7%), and 7% downhill (-7%). Subsequently, the athletes performed an incremental ramp-to-exhaustion (RTE) protocol on an ergometric bicycle until task failure and repeated the running protocol (POST-RTE). During running and cycling was monitored perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate (HR). Plantar pressure distribution, peak plantar pressure, total foot area, and ground contact time were measured by an in-shoe sensor. Analysis of variance showed that HR (p=0.001; η2=0.63) and RPE (p=0.001; η2=0.82 large effect) were higher in POST-RTE, without interactions between slopes and fatigue. The heel load showed difference between 0 and 7% and 7 and -7% (p=0.001; η 2=0.44 large effect) with higher value in -7%. The midfoot showed differences between 0 and -7% with higher value in 0% (p=0.03; η 2=0.15 small effect). The contact time showed interactions between fatigue and slopes with a higher value in POST-RTE. Coaches should be aware that training on the uphill and downhill surfaces can alter the plantar load on different foot parts.
Dynamic and isometric protocols of knee extension: effect of fatigue on the EMG signal

Abstract:The objective of this study was to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) signal behavior of rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (caput longum) (BFCL) from nine women during fatiguing dynamic and isometric knee extensions tests and to determine their EMGFT (Electromyographic Fatigue Threshold). Surface electrodes, biological signal acquisition module, analogical-digital converter board and specific software were used. The RMS (Root Mean Square) values obtained from concentric phase (80 to 30 degrees) of the dynamic knee extension and from isometric contraction were correlated with time on each load by linear regression analysis. The respective slopes were correlated with the correspondent load to determine the EMGFT. Force (Kgf) and median frequency--MF (Hz) obtained during MIVC (Maximal Isometric Voluntary Contraction) performed before and after the fatiguing tests were calculated in Matlab environment. The results demonstrated that the endurance time decreases with higher loads, the EMG amplitude increase with time and was greater at higher loads, between muscles in dynamic exercise the RF and VL showed higher slopes, and in isometric exercise the VL showed the same behavior. The EMGFT values were similar in both exercises; the force values predominantly decreased after fatiguing tests; however the MF only decreased after some loads. The protocols proposed allowed standardizing protocols at least to induce the fatigue process and to determine the EMGFT as an endurance indicative, which may be used to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitative or training interventions indicated to reduce muscle weakness and fatigue.
Holistic approaches to understanding mechanisms of fatigue in high-intensity sport

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this article is to provide a holistic understanding of likely mechanisms of fatigue during high-intensity sports lasting 1–10 min. Methods: The contributions from skeletal muscle, central nervous system (motor drive), and fatigue sensations to lower performance during intense cycling, running, rowing, repeated sprints, or knee extensions were evaluated. Results: At the end of exercise, reductions of external power, force, or velocity and peak isometric forces are moderate (10–30%), motor drive falls by <8%, and fatigue sensations are extreme, e.g., Borg's rating of perceived exertion >18. Multiple putative fatigue factors can change simultaneously to interactively lower performance and/or provide protection. Major detrimental factors include raised intramuscular inorganic phosphate, severe extra- and intracellular acidosis, cerebral hypoxemia, large reduction of trans-sarcolemmal K+-gradient (also Na+- and Cl−-gradients), and reduced muscle glycogen levels. Factors resisting fatigue include elevated adrenaline, extracellular lactate, interstitial [H+] and [K+], and a normal trans-sarcolemmal Cl−-gradient. Conclusions: Raised inorganic phosphate interacting with intracellular H+, and a large rundown of trans-sarcolemmal ion gradients are likely to cause peripheral fatigue. Severe arterial hypoxemia (due to plasma acidosis, raised core temperature, lowered PaO2), and factors released from glycogen lowered muscles, e.g., interleukin-6, may cause central fatigue and strong fatigue sensations.
Fatigue and recovery of central nervous system function following intermittent-sprint exercise

Abstract:Research into fatigue following sports characterised by intermittent sprint exercise has increased substantially in recent years. However, when investigating post-exercise impairments in muscle function and recovery thereof, studies have predominantly focused on peripheral perturbations. The aim of this thesis was to examine the aetiology of impairments in neuromuscular function which occur following intermittent sprint exercise, with a focus on both peripheral and central perturbations. Study 1 determined the optimal protocol for the measurement of corticospinal excitability (CSE), short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), and intracortical facilitation (ICF) in the rectus femoris using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Study 2 examined the reliability of single- and paired-pulse TMS measures, as well as the reliability of measures of neuromuscular and physical function and perceptual assessments, when measured within-day and on consecutive days. These studies informed the methodology of subsequent chapters, and demonstrated that these variables could be assessed reliability within- and between-days. Study 3 examined the aetiology and recovery of perturbations in neuromuscular function following competitive football match-play. The study demonstrated that football match-play elicited substantial post-match impairments in isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) strength of the knee extensors (-14%, P < 0.001) that persisted for 48 h (-4%, P = 0.01), before recovering by 72 h post-exercise. In addition, match-play elicited protracted impairments in contractile function, as demonstrated through considerable post-match reductions in potentiated twitch force (−14%; P < 0.001), which persisted at 24 h (−6%; P = 0.01) before recovering by 48 h. Furthermore, match-play evoked prolonged impairment in central nervous system (CNS) function, with a decline in the capacity of the CNS to voluntarily activate muscle post-match (−8%; P < 0.001), which persisted at 24 h (−5%; P = 0.01) and required up to 48 h to recover. Study 3 implemented a novel method of cryotherapy using phase change material (PCM) in an attempt to accelerate recovery following match-play. The study showed that wearing cold PCM garments had no effect on recovery when compared with a placebo control. These studies provide novel insight into the aetiology of fatigue following intermittent sprint exercise, which elicits prolonged impairments in CNS function, requiring up to 48 h to resolve.

Abstract:Purpose: The present study investigated the recovery of performance and neuromuscular fatigue after cycling repeated sprints. Methods: Ten participants performed two sessions of repeated sprints (one session: 10 × 10-s sprints, 30-s recovery) separated by 24 h (R24-S1 and R24-S2) and two sessions separated by 48 h (R48-S1 and R48-S2). The recovery condition (i.e., 24 or 48 h) was randomized and separated by 1 wk. All sessions were performed on a recumbent bike, allowing minimal delay between sprints termination and neuromuscular measurements. Neuromuscular function of knee extensors (neuromuscular assessment [NMA]) was assessed before sessions (presession), after the fifth sprint (midsession), and immediately after (postsession). Before sessions, baseline NMA was also carried out on an isometric chair. The NMA (bike and chair) was composed of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of knee extension and peripheral neuromuscular stimulation during the MVC and on relaxed muscle. Results: The sprints performance was not significantly different between sessions and did not presented significant interaction between recovery conditions. MVC was significantly lower at R24-S2 compared with R24-S1 (-6.5% ± 8.8%, P = 0.038) and R48-S2 (-5.6% ± 8.2%, P = 0.048), whereas resting potentiated high-frequency doublet (Db100) was lower at R24-S2 compared with R24-S1 (-10.4 ± 8.3, P = 0.01) (NMA on chair). There were significant reductions in MVC (>30%, P < 0.001) and Db100 (>38%, P < 0.001) from pre- to postsession in all sessions, without significant interactions between recovery conditions (NMA on bike). Conclusion: Cycling repeated sprints induce significant fatigue, particularly at the peripheral level, which is fully restored after 48 h, but not 24 h, of recovery. One versus two days of recovery does not affect neuromuscular fatigue appearance during cycling repeated-sprint sessions.

Abstract:Although the underlying mechanisms behind upper limb (e.g., finger) motor slowing during movements performed at the maximum voluntary rate have been explored, the same cannot be said for the lower limb. This is especially relevant considering the lower limb's larger joints and different functional patterns. Despite the similar motor control base, previously found differences in movement patterns and segment inertia may lead to distinct central and peripheral manifestations of fatigue in larger joint movement. Therefore, we aimed to explore these manifestations in a fatiguing knee maximum movement rate task by measuring brain and muscle activity, as well as brain-muscle coupling using corticomuscular coherence, during this task. A significant decrease in knee movement rate up to half the task duration was observed. After an early peak, brain activity showed a generalized decrease during the first half of the task, followed by a plateau, whereas knee flexor muscle activity showed a continuous decline. A similar decline was also seen in corticomuscular coherence but for both flexor and extensor muscles. The electrophysiological manifestations associated with knee motor slowing therefore showed some common and some distinct aspects compared with smaller joint tasks. Both central and peripheral manifestations of fatigue were observed; the changes seen in both EEG and electromyographic (EMG) variables suggest that multiple mechanisms were involved in exercise regulation and fatigue development.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The loss of knee movement rate with acute fatigue induced by high-speed movement is associated with both central and peripheral electrophysiological changes, such as a decrease in EEG power, increased agonist-antagonist cocontraction, and impaired brain-muscle coupling. These findings had not previously been reported for the knee joint, which shows functional and physiological differences compared with the existing findings for smaller upper limb joints.
Changes in Injury Risk Mechanisms After Soccer-Specific Fatigue in Male Youth Soccer Players

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of soccer specific fatigue on muscular and neuromuscular function in male youth soccer players. Elite soccer players (n = 20; age 15.7 ± 0.5 y; body height 177.75 ± 6.61 cm; body mass 67.28 ± 8.29 kg) were measured before and after soccer specific exercise (SAFT 90 ). The reactive strength index (RSI) was determined by a drop jump test, leg stiffness (LS) by a 20 sub-maximal two-legged hopping test, and a functional hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio from isokinetic concentric and eccentric strength of the dominant and non-dominant leg (measured at angular velocities of 1.05 rad · s −1 and 3.14 rad · s −1 ). Metabolic response to the SAFT 90 was determined by blood lactate and perceived exertion was assessed by the Borg scale. After simulated match play, a significant decrease in absolute LS (t = 4.411; p < 0.001; ω 2 = 0.48) and relative LS (t = 4.326; p < 0.001; ω 2 = 0.49) was observed and the RSI increased significantly (t = 3.806; p = 0.001; ω 2 = 0.40). A reduction in LS found after the SAFT 90 indicates possible reduction in dynamic knee stabilization. However, if we consider the changes in other observed variables, the present study did not clearly confirm that fatigue induced by a soccer specific protocol increased the risk of ACL and hamstring injury. This may be attributed to the simulated rather than actual match play used in the present study.

The gluteus maximus fatigue limits the physical and mental athletic capacity to perform set tasks. A possible link between the presence of latent trigger points (LTrPs) and muscle fatigue development/persistence has been posited. The aim of the study was to determine whether elite short-track speed skating can result in the impairment of the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs.

J Strength Cond Res 37(3): e1-e7, 2023-This study aimed to analyze the acute and residual effects of increased high-speed running (HSR) demands during an in-season training microcycle in young elite soccer players on localized neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) of the knee extensors (KE), posterior chain muscles, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Thirty-four elite young soccer players (age = 17.1 ± 0.8 years) were assessed in 2 consecutive days at different time points (baseline, POST-activation gym-based session, POST-small-sided game [SSG], POST-training 1 [TR1], POST-6H, POST-24H, POST-preventive gym-based session, and POST-training 2 [TR2]). Neuromuscular fatigue of the KE and posterior chain muscles was measured with a maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). External (total distance, number of accelerations or decelerations, and HSR distance) and internal (RPE) load was assessed during the SSG, TR1, and TR2 sessions. Players were divided through a median split, into "HIGH" or "LOW" group according to the training demands. The alpha level was set at p ≤ 0.05. A 2-way mixed effects model ANOVA showed a significant decreased in 90:20 MVIC after TR1 in the "HIGH" HSR group ( p = 0.037; effect size [ES] = 0.45). No significant differences in RPE were found after TR1 ( p = 0.637; ES = 0.58) and TR2 ( p = 0.109; ES = 0.62) when comparing the "HIGH" HSR group with the "LOW" HSR group. Assessing player's force production capabilities can be an effective strategy to detect NMF when HSR demands are acutely increased. Special caution should be taken when prescribing the training load of the training session based solely on RPE, as NMF might be present.

Abstract:The contribution of central and peripheral factors to muscle fatigue were quantified following a high-intensity uphill running exercise. Eight male volunteers performed an intermittent exercise at 120 % of maximal aerobic speed on a treadmill with an 18 % grade. Electrically evoked and voluntary contractions of the knee extensors and EMG of the two vastii were analyzed before and immediately after the high-intensity exercise. Isometric maximal voluntary contraction decreased slightly (-7+/-8 %; p < 0.05) after exercise but no changes were found in the level of maximal activation or in the torque produced by a 80 Hz maximal stimulation applied to the femoral nerve. Following exercise, the single twitch was characterized by lower peak torque, maximal rate of force development, and relaxation (-28+/-11%, -25+/-12%, -31+/-15% respectively, p < 0.001), and higher surface of the M-wave for both vastii. The ratio between the torques evoked by 20 Hz and 80 Hz stimulation declined significantly (-22+/-10%, p < 0.01) after exercise. These findings indicate that muscle fatigue after high-intensity running exercise is due to significant alteration in excitation-contraction coupling and that this type of exercise does not induce significant central fatigue or changes at the crossbridge level.
