Abstract:We first prove that a properly immersed static n-dimensional submanifold (Delta H = 0) with restricted growth of the curvature at infinity in Fn+p(c)(c >= 0) is totally umbilical if the Will more functional is pinched by a positive constant depending only on n. Secondly, we obtain a global rigidity theorem for Willmore surfaces in the sphere. Thirdly, we give a lower bound on the lifespan of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c). Finally, we get the longtime existence and convergence of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c) (c >= 0) under the small initial Willmore energy condition.

Abstract:We consider closed immersed hypersurfaces evolving by surface diffusion flow, and perform an analysis based on local and global integral estimates. First we show that a properly immersed stationary (\Delta H \equiv 0) hypersurface in \R^3 or \R^4 with restricted growth of the curvature at infinity and small total tracefree curvature must be an embedded union of umbilic hypersurfaces. Then we prove for surfaces that if the L^2 norm of the tracefree curvature is globally initially small it is monotonic nonincreasing along the flow. We also derive pointwise estimates for all derivatives of the curvature assuming that its L^2 norm is locally small. Using these results we show that if a singularity develops the curvature must concentrate in a definite manner, and prove that a blowup under suitable conditions converges to a nonumbilic embedded stationary surface. We obtain our main result as a consequence: the surface diffusion flow of a surface initially close to a sphere in L^2 is a family of embeddings, exists for all time, and exponentially converges to a round sphere.

Abstract:A study of the diffusion of a passive Brownian particle on the surface of a sphere and subject to the effects of an external potential, coupled linearly to the probability density of the particle's position, is presented through a numerical algorithm devised to simulate the trajectories of an ensemble of Brownian particles. The algorithm is based on elementary geometry and practically only algebraic operations are used, which makes the algorithm efficient and simple, and converges, in the weak sense, to the solutions of the Smoluchowski equation on the sphere. Our findings show that the global effects of curvature are taken into account in both the time dependent and stationary processes.

Abstract:We consider the orientational diffusion controlled by the hyperspherical Laplacian, $\nabla^2_D$, on the surface of the $D$--dimensional hypersphere in the limit $D \to \infty$. We find that for stretched paths with lengths relatively short compared to the hypersphere's radius, the finite-size corrections in orientational correlations are controlled by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling exponent, $\gamma = 1/3$. In addition, we speculate about the topology of the orientational target space representing the surface of the hypersphere.

Abstract:This paper outlines a method where a brachistochrone is developed for the hyperbolic plane. This technique is then used to calculate the Fubini-Study metric and consequent Laplacian operator. We discuss the various systems of eigenfunctions on the Poincare disk, including Mehler-Fock, Macdonald and Whittaker functions. The relationship between these systems of differential equations is exploited using an Laplace transform method on the hyperbolic plane, which allows us to transform the solutions to the Helmholz equation from one space to another. Discussion of further applications of this technique is given with particular reference to diffusion systems on alternate forms of hyperbolic and projective geometry.

Diffusion of light in turbid media and Kubelka-Munk theory

Abstract:We show that the Kubelka-Munk equations for the description of the intensity transfer of light in turbid media are equivalent to a one-dimensional diffusion equation, which is obtained by averaging the three-dimensional diffusion equation over the lateral directions. This enables us to identify uniquely the Kubelka-Munk parameters and derive expressions for diffuse reflection and transmission coefficients including the effect of internal reflections. Without internal reflections we recover the Kubelka-Munk formulas for these coefficients. We show that the Kubelka-Munk equations are the proper radiative-transfer equations for the one-dimensional diffusion problem and comment on previous attempts to derive the Kubelka-Munk equations.

The explicit expression of the multiple times convolution of the probability density functions that we should use is very complicated. But here we do not need its whole explicit expression. We just need only a part of the information, and this fact make it possible to derive the general expression of the volume of hypersphere.

Abstract:We resolve a long standing question regarding the suitable effective diffusion coefficient of the spherically-symmetric transport equation, which is valid at long times. To that end, we generalize a transport solution in three dimensions for homogeneous media, to include general collisional properties, including birth-death events and linearly anisotropic scattering. This is done by introducing an exact scaling law relating the Green function of the pure-scattering case with the general collision case, which is verified using deterministic and Monte-Carlo simulations. Importantly, the effective diffusion coefficient is identified by inspecting the transport solution at long times.

Abstract:A bstract The chase of universal bounds on diffusivities in strongly coupled systems and holographic models has a long track record. The identification of a universal velocity scale, independent of the presence of well-defined quasiparticle excitations, is one of the major challenges of this program. A recent analysis, valid for emergent IR fixed points exhibiting local quantum criticality, and dual to IR AdS 2 geometries, suggests to identify such a velocity using the time and length scales at which hydrodynamics breaks down — the equilibration velocity. The latter relates to the radius of convergence of the hydrodynamic expansion and it is extracted from a collision between a hydrodynamic diffusive mode and a non-hydrodynamic mode associated to the IR AdS 2 region. In this short note, we confirm this picture for holographic systems displaying the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance. Moreover, we find that, at zero temperature, the lower bound set by quantum chaos and the upper one defined by causality and hydrodynamics exactly coincide, determining uniquely the diffusion constant. Finally, we comment on the meaning and universality of this newly proposed prescription.

Stability for the Surface Diffusion Flow

Abstract:We study the global existence and stability of surface diffusion flow (the normal velocity is given by the Laplacian of the mean curvature) of smooth boundaries of subsets of the $n$--dimensional flat torus. More precisely, we show that if a smooth set is ``close enough'' to a strictly stable critical set for the Area functional under a volume constraint, then the surface diffusion flow of its boundary hypersurface exists for all time and asymptotically converges to the boundary of a ``translated'' of the critical set. This result was obtained in dimension $n=3$ by Acerbi, Fusco, Julin and Morini (extending previous results for spheres of Escher, Mayer and Simonett and Elliott and Garcke in dimension $n=2$). Our work generalizes such conclusion to any dimension $n\in\mathbb N$. For sake of clarity, we show all the details in dimension $n=4$ and we list the necessary modifications to the quantities involved in the proof in the general $n$--dimensional case, in the last section.

Abstract:In studying a 2-dimensional symplectic map, the exponential law and algebraic law are observed in the diffusion of orbits in the phase space. The diffusion time in the vicinity of an island is investigated carefully and a logarithm law is found for the first time. The distribution of asteroids in the main belt and the diffusion velocities in 3:2 and 4:3 resonances are discussed using this map.

Abstract:This paper examines the temporal evolution of a two-stage stochastic model for spherical random fields. The model uses a time-fractional stochastic hyperbolic diffusion equation, which describes the evolution of spherical random fields on $\bS^2$ in time. The diffusion operator incorporates a time-fractional derivative in the Caputo sense. In the first stage of the model, a homogeneous problem is considered, with an isotropic Gaussian random field on $\bS^2$ serving as the initial condition. In the second stage, the model transitions to an inhomogeneous problem driven by a time-delayed Brownian motion on $\bS^2$. The solution to the model is expressed through a series of real spherical harmonics. To obtain an approximation, the expansion of the solution is truncated at a certain degree $L\geq1$. The analysis of truncation errors reveals their convergence behavior, showing that convergence rates are affected by the decay of the angular power spectra of the driving noise and the initial condition. In addition, we investigate the sample properties of the stochastic solution, demonstrating that, under some conditions, there exists a local Hölder continuous modification of the solution. To illustrate the theoretical findings, numerical examples and simulations inspired by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are presented.

Abstract:Time evolution of the position-velocity correlation functions (PVCF) plays a key role in a new formalism of Brownian motion. A system of differential equations, which governs PVCF, is derived for magnetic Skyrmions on a 2-dimensional magnetic thin film with thermal agitation. In the formalism, a new type of diffusion coeffcient is introduced which does not come out in the usual diffusion equations. The mean-square displacement (MSD) is obtained from the PVCF and found that it oscillates in time when the damping constant is small. It is also shown, even for a structureless particle, that the famous Ornstein-Fuerth formula should be corrected taking a proper initial value of PVCF into account.

Abstract:We describe direct imaging measurements of the collective and relative diffusion of two colloidal spheres near a flat plate. The bounding surface modifies the spheres' dynamics, even at separations of tens of radii. This behavior is captured by a stokeslet analysis of fluid flow driven by the spheres' and wall's no-slip boundary conditions. In particular, this analysis reveals surprising asymmetry in the normal modes for pair diffusion near a flat surface.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic projections, the projection onto conserved charges representing ballistic propagation of fluid waves, give exact transport results in many-body systems, such as the exact Drude weights. Focussing one one-dimensional systems, I show that this principle can be extended beyond the Euler scale, in particular to the diffusive and superdiffusive scales. By hydrodynamic reduction, Hilbert spaces of observables are constructed that generalise the standard space of conserved densities and describe the finer scales of hydrodynamics. The Green-Kubo formula for the Onsager matrix has a natural expression within the diffusive space. This space is associated with quadratically extensive charges, and projections onto any such charge give generic lower bounds for diffusion. In particular, bilinear expressions in linearly extensive charges lead to explicit diffusion lower bounds calculable from the thermodynamics, and applicable for instance to generic momentum-conserving one-dimensional systems. Bilinear charges are interpreted as covariant derivatives on the manifold of maximal entropy states, and represent the contribution to diffusion from scattering of ballistic waves. An analysis of fractionally extensive charges, combined with clustering properties from the superdiffusion phenomenology, gives lower bounds for superdiffusion exponents. These bounds reproduce the predictions of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang exponent 2/3 for sound-like modes, the Levy-distribution exponent 3/5 for heat-like modes, and the full Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:We describe direct imaging measurements of a colloidal sphere's diffusion between two parallel surfaces. The dynamics of this deceptively simple hydrodynamically coupled system have proved difficult to analyze. Comparison with approximate formulations of a confined sphere's hydrodynamic mobility reveals good agreement with both a leading-order superposition approximation as well as a more general all-images stokeslet analysis.

Abstract:We consider a random diffusion dynamics for an infinite system of hard spheres of two different sizes evolving in Rd , its reversible probability measure, and its projection on the subset of the large spheres. The main feature is the occurrence of an attractive short-range dynamical interaction – known in the physics literature as a depletion interaction – between the large spheres, which is induced by the hidden presence of the small ones. By considering the asymptotic limit for such a system when the density of the particles is high, we also obtain a constructive dynamical approach to the famous discrete geometry problem of maximising the contact number of n identical spheres in Rd . As support material, we propose numerical simulations in the form of movies.

Abstract:The strongly interacting matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions possesses several conserved quantum numbers, such as baryon number, strangeness, and electric charge. The diffusion process of these charges can be characterized by a diffusion matrix that describes the mutual influence of the diffusion of various charges. We derive the Kubo relations for evaluating diffusion coefficients as elements of a diffusion matrix. We further demonstrate that in the weak coupling limit, the diffusion matrix elements obtained through Kubo relations reduce to those obtained from kinetic theory with an appropriate identification of the relaxation times. We illustrate this evaluation in a toy model of two interacting scalar fields with two conserved charges.
