Abstract:Achieving hard anti-smudge coatings that combine self-healing of lubricant-impregnated surfaces and omniphobicity of liquid-like surfaces presents a critical challenge. To address this issue, nanoscale silicone oil pools were generated by emulsifying silicone oil with an amphiphilic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-bearing polysiloxane sol, which were then incorporated into the methyltrimethoxysilane-derived sol to create mechanically robust, transparent, and self-healing coatings. The key was the employment of both a PDMS network and single-end grafted PDMS brushes, with the former providing molecular-level channels for the secretion of silicone oil molecules and the latter strengthening the dynamic omniphobicity of hard coatings. Additionally, the tight physical entanglement between the cross-linked PDMS network and the silicone oil imparts excellent resistance to fluid erosion, thereby ensuring long-term anti-smudge performance.
Superior Hard yet Flexible, Highly Transparent, and Scratch‐Repairable Waterborne Antiadhesive Coatings Enabled by Multi‐Magnitude Dynamic Bonds Synergy Strategy

Abstract:A novel multi‐magnitude dynamic bonds synergy strategy is developed to reconcile the "trade‐off" effect between hardness, flexibility, and healability. The synthesized waterborne coating exhibits exceptional healability while maintaining superior hardness and flexibility. In addition, the incorporation of polydimethylsiloxane endows the coating with excellent antiadhesive properties. More importantly, the coating formulation is entirely waterborne, aligning with environmentally sustainable practices. With the advent and proliferation of foldable displays, the demand for hard yet flexible antiadhesive coatings with healability has significantly increased. Unfortunately, reports on such materials are scarce, with existing research generally facing the challenge of reconciling the "trade‐off" effect among hardness, flexibility, and dynamic performance and containing high levels of volatile organic compounds which causes irreversible environmental damage. Herein, this study presents a waterborne antiadhesive coating with ceramic‐like hardness, polymer‐like flexibility, and healability. The coating is fabricated through a multi‐magnitude dynamic bond synergy strategy, wherein the synthesized amino‐rich oligosiloxane with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chains is dynamically linked with the amino‐rich oligosiloxane containing ureidopyrimidinone moieties via coordination reaction between aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3·6H2O) and amino, enabling the coating comprising Al─N coordination bonds and hierarchical hydrogen bonds. The as‐prepared coating exhibits 99.95% self‐healing efficiency while possessing superior hardness (9H), flexibility (2 mm bending radius), and transparency (>99% transmittance). In addition, the incorporation of PDMS endows the coating with excellent antiadhesive properties. More importantly, the coating formulation is entirely waterborne, aligning with environmentally sustainable practices. This research offers valuable insight for advancing the development of waterborne coatings with well‐balanced comprehensive performance, particularly suited for applications in foldable displays and other fields.

Abstract:Antifouling ability and substrate adhesion are typical trade-offs seen for a silicone coating. Furthermore, the self-healable inability limits their duration. This study reports a bioinspired self-stratifying coating composed of a polyurethane with dopamine and silane pedant groups and a bi-silanol-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with fluorocarbon and poly(ethylene glycol) segments as a reactive amphiphilic polymer (RAP). During coating formation, the RAP with low surface energy can be enriched on the surface due to the self-stratifying effects, whereas the bioinspired dopamine and silane groups provide the coating with strong substrate adhesion. Besides, the multiple hydrogen bonds formed between the urethane linkages and the dopamine groups allow the coating to heal. Our study indicates such a polyurethane-based coating has excellent antifouling ability against proteins, bacteria, and diatoms, good self-healing performance at room temperature in air and water, as well as high adhesion strength on various substrates such as ceramic, steel, glass, and wood. This study provides a promising and universal strategy for the simultaneous realization of antifouling, self-healing, and strong substrate adhesion. The coatings could meet the needs of applications in marine antifouling, biomedical instruments, and other fields.

Abstract:Creating an artificial surface, mimicking a live fish scale that repels oil underwater and with self-healing properties, would be significant for the development of nontoxic marine antifouling coatings. Here, we report a seawater-induced strategy to create in situ an underwater superoleophobic surface, starting from the coatings of a self-polishing polymer and seawater-responsive polymer-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles. The coatings' surfaces were able to renew in artificial seawater through the hydrolysis of the superficial self-polishing polymer and its subsequent dissolution. Particularly, the grafted poly(triisopropylsilyl acrylate-co-3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) chains could transform into hydrophilic ones via seawater-induced hydrolysis, which additionally strengthened the oil-repellency (zero oil adhesive force) and endowed the surface with excellent antiprotein adsorption characteristics. Because the hydrolysis was limited to the superficial layer of the coatings, it could avoid the water swelling that instead occurs with conventional underwater superoleophobic coatings, with significant benefits to its durability. We believe that the seawater-induced renewal of underwater superoleophobic surfaces will be useful in extreme marine environments.

Abstract:Schematic representation of the preparation of coatings with anti‐adhesive behavior on glass. This study focuses on the surface modification of substrates using a poly(N,N‐dimethyl‐N‐(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)‐N‐[2′‐(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]‐ammonium chloride‐co‐3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate) P(CBMAE‐co‐TMSPMA) and ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). By covalently bonding the Si‐OH pendant of the copolymer with hydroxyl residues on the material's surface, a stable polymer coating is formed. The properties of P(CBMAE‐co‐TMSPMA) coatings were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and contact angle (CA) meter. The addition of TEOS allows for the regulation of surface roughness. With the increase of TEOS content, the contact angle of underwater oil first increased and then decreased. The water contact angles were 8°, the underwater superoleophobic contact angle reached 168°, and the number of adherent platelets and Escherichia coli were significantly reduced to 7.5% and 5% on the surface of the coating, respectively. After undergoing simultaneous hydrolysis, the superoleophobic contact angle of P(CBMAE‐co‐TMSPMA)/SiO2 coating further increased to 174°. These interesting and robust properties make them promising candidates for biomedical applications. Highlights The underwater superoleophobic coating (contact angles of 174°). Abstract:We successfully prepared a dynamically oleophobic epoxy coating with low contact angle hysteresis (≤ 5.2°) for different low surface-tension liquids. Due to significant enrichment of covalently bonded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at the coating surface, the obtained coating displays remarkable repellency against various low surface-tension liquids, including hexadecane, dodecane, decane, and soybean oil, as well as anti-smudge property and strong interfacial adhesion towards various substrates. Moreover, these excellent surface/interfacial properties have demonstrated to be very robust after being subjected to different environments (low pH, high pH, heating, and UV exposure). This type of coating may find promising applications in a broad range of fields where oil repellency is desired.

Abstract:In this work, a novel substrate building block, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles armed with dopamine molecules were developed via mussel-inspired metal-coordination bonds. Combined with glycidyl methacrylate, polydimethylsiloxane propyl ether methacrylate, and diethylenetriamine, the original silicone oil swelling slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were first prepared by reversible coordinate bonds and strong covalent bonds cross-linking process. The matrix mechanical characteristics and surface physicochemical properties were systematically investigated. Results showed that the mechanical property of copolymer matrix and surface wettability of SLIPS can be remarkably recovered, which were due to the synergistic interactions of magnetic nanoparticles' intrinsic photothermal effect, reversible Fe-catechol coordination, and diffused lubricating liquid. After irradiating with sunlamp for 2 h and sequentially healing for 10 h under ambient conditions, the crack almost disappeared under optical microscopy with 78.25% healing efficiency (HEf) of toughness, and surface slippery was completely retrieved to water droplets. The efficient self-heal of copolymer matrix (66.5% HEf after eighth cutting-healing cycle) and recovering of slipperiness (SA < 5° and 5° < SA < 17° after fourth and eighth cutting-centrifuging-healing cycles, respectively) would extend longevity of SLIPS when subjected to multiple damages. Moreover, the prepared SLIPS displayed superb self-cleaning and liquid-repellent properties to a wide range of particulate contaminants and fluids.

Abstract:While superhydrophobic coatings have been widely used for surface modification and protection, most suffer from relatively short service life due to the lack of self-healing mechanisms. Herein, a new self-healable coating formulation based on waterborne organic silicone polyurethane has been proposed by integrating disulfide groups into polyurethane molecules. The bulk polyurethane material with disulfide groups shows high self-healing efficiency of up to 90.8%. The polyurethane coating on cotton fabric showed high superhydrophobic performance even after severe damage. Furthermore, the coating showed excellent self-healing ability. The damaged surface could self-heal after heating at 80 °C for half an hour. The coating also exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity and extremely high oil/water-separation efficiency, even after experiencing 80 washes or being worn 800 times. The combination of superior self-healing ability and superhydrophobic properties of the waterborne organic silicone polyurethane coating provides a general approach for the long-term application of such coatings in harsh environments.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have garnered significant attention in various industrial applications, such as photovoltaic power generation, anti-icing, and corrosion resistance, due to their exceptional water-repellent properties. However, the poor durability of conventional superhydrophobic coatings has severely impeded their practical implementation. To achieve the dual self-recovery of microscale and nanoscale surface structures and maintain low surface energy after damage to superhydrophobic coatings, thereby enhancing their durability, a rapidly self-healing superhydrophobic coating was developed using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and n-nonadecane in this study. The coating surface demonstrated exceptional hydrophobic characteristics, as evidenced by a water contact angle (WCA) of 157.5° and a sliding angle (SA) of 4.2° achieved at optimized proportions. Through scanning electron microscopy, it was observed that the coating surface exhibited a rough structure at both the microscale and nanoscale. The stability test results showed that the WCA only decreases by 5.7° and the SA only increases by 3.6° after 100 instances of external friction. The stability test results demonstrated that the superhydrophobic coating maintains excellent hydrophobicity under mechanical external forces and in acidic and alkaline environments. The results of the self-healing capability test showed that the WCA rebounded to 151.5° and 149.5° after we subjected the samples to 20 MPa of vertical pressure damage and chloroform exposure for 4 h, respectively. The coating regained a robust hydrophobic state even after experiencing repeated mechanical and chemical damage. The above results indicate that the resulting coating demonstrates outstanding durability, including high resistance to friction, stability against acids and alkalis, and the ability to self-recover hydrophobicity after repeated damage.

Abstract:Photo-curing coating has the advantages of environmental friendliness, short curing time, high productive efficiency and low energy consumption. However, it is also a challenge to overcome the weakness of brittleness, water vapor damage and repairing difficulty. Herein, we have prepared a flexible and self-healing epoxy acrylic coating by introducing dynamic disulfide bond and dangling chain into the resin system, furthermore, sprayed nano-SiO 2 to construct the micro surface structure to endow the coating with super-hydrophobicity. The introduction of dynamic disulfide bond has endowed the coating with self-healing ability, while the diluent as dangling chain has promoted the mobility of molecular chain, more importantly, which not only improved the self-healing efficiency of the coating, but also reduced the brittleness, three birds with one stone. Moreover, silane coupling agent was used to modify the nano-SiO 2 particles to enhance the abrasive resistance of the coating. The coating exhibits outstanding comprehensive performance: the water contact angle can reach 155°, the self-healing efficiency can reach 97 %, wear-resistance greatly increases by 40 %. These results are expected to provide some references for developing UV-curable coating with high performance.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted broad attention because of their unique water repellency but are restricted by poor wear resistance, weak adhesion to the substrate, and complex fabrication processes. Herein, a double-layer coating strategy consisting of the amino fluorine-silicone resin/epoxy resin (AFSR/EP) system is created. The system features a high hardness and transparent hydrophobic interface adhesive layer through the amine-epoxy "click" chemical reaction. The environmentally friendly resin system and low-cost nano-silica particles (n-SiO2) are composited and sprayed onto the substrate surface to form a superhydrophobic layer with outstanding robustness and excellent environmental stability. The prepared AFSR/EP@n-SiO2 composite coatings have a water contact angle of 161.1° and a sliding angle of 3.4°, demonstrating high superhydrophobic properties. Benefitting from the complementary advantages of silicone/epoxy resin, the prepared composite coatings maintain remarkable water repellency after various harsh environmental tests, including cyclic mechanical abrasion and tape-stripping, acid-base (pH 1 and pH 14) treatment, 10 wt% NaCl (pH 7) salt solution immersion, temperature treatment, knife scratching, and long-term ultraviolet radiation treatment, showing reinforced mechanical robustness and durable anti-corrosion stability. Notably, surface hardness of 5H and optical transparency over 80% can be achieved. The simple method offers a novel approach for the large-scale preparation of multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings.
Healable Supracolloidal Nanocomposite Water-Borne Coatings

Abstract:Water-borne coatings often contain nanofillers to enhance their mechanical or optical properties. The aggregation of these fillers may, however, lead to undesired effects such as brittle and opaque coatings, reducing their performance and lifetime. By controlling the distribution and structural arrangement of the nanofillers in the coatings and inserting reversible chemical bonds, both the elasticity and strength of the coatings may be effectively improved, while healing properties, via the reversible chemistry, extend the coating's lifetime. Aqueous dispersions of polymer-core/silica-corona supracolloidal particles were used to prepare water-borne coatings. Polymer and silica nanoparticles were prefunctionalized with thiol/disulfide groups during the supracolloid assembly. Disulfide bridges were further established between a cross-linker and the supracolloids during drying and coating formation. The supracolloidal nanocomposite coatings were submitted to intentional (physical) damages, i.e., blunt and sharp surface scratches or cut through into two pieces, and subsequently UV irradiated to induce the recovery of the damage(s). The viscoelasticity and healing properties of the coatings were examined by dynamic, static, and surface mechanical analyses. The nanocomposite coatings showed a great extent of interfacial restoration of cut damage and surface scratches. The healing properties are strongly related to the coating's viscoelasticity and interfacial (re)activation of the disulfide bridges. Nanocomposite coatings with silica concentrations below their critical volume fraction show higher in situ healing efficiency, as compared to coatings with higher silica concentration. This work provides insights into the control of nanofillers distribution in water-borne coatings and strategies to increase the coating lifetime via mechanical damage recovery.

Abstract:Covalent bonding and self-healing ability offer superhydrophobic coating high durability, however, the barrier to the migration and self-healing is obvious due to its covalent network and high glass transition (T g ) temperature. In this work, we design a novel strategy for incorporating covalent adaptable networks of disulfide bonds into superhydrophobic surfaces by coating cotton fabric for its mechanical robustness and processability, which is based on enzyme etching and subsequent oxidation coupling of sulfhydryl alkyl silane (MPTES) and (mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane-dimethylsiloxane copolymers (S-PDMS). The super water-repellency is durable enough even after 25 cycles of repeated accelerated washing or 2000 cycles of Martindale abrasion. The dynamic adjustment of covalent adaptable networks of disulfide bonds happens upon heat stress, which allows lower temperature (90 °C) for the self-healing on superhydrophobicity. The grafting of MPTES and disulfide coupling reaction make the route available to other substrates. Such a novel way for preparing covalent adaptable networks may promote the development of durable functional coatings and routine maintenance.

Abstract:Coatings with liquid-like repellency to liquids has attracted much attention due to their wide range of applications. However, the current liquid-like coatings are usually very thin in the nanoscale and require of specific substrates for application, which leads to poor durability and much restriction on their applications. Here, we report the fabrication of a liquid-like polysiloxane coating with tunable thicknesses through base-catalyzed rapid hydrolysis and polycondensation among a formula of alkylalkoxysilanes. The transparent liquid-like coating shows negligible contact-angle hysteresis to both water and low-surface-tension oils and can be readily applied on substrates of different types. The coating also presents high thermal and hydrolytic durability, excellent antifouling properties, and low friction coefficient and is self-healable after chemical damage on the surface. The easy and versatile method of fabricating liquid-like coatings with high durability has great potential for practical applications in numerous fields.

Abstract:The development of fabrication techniques for superhydrophobic coatings is rapidly maturing, yet the problem of low mechanical durability still persists. To address this problem, we introduce a robust micro-nanoscale flowerlike ZnO/epoxy resin superhydrophobic coating possessing a rapid healing ability after ultra-abrasion. The coating was fabricated by a simple immersion method, and it presented a water contact angle above 150 degrees and a sliding angle of less than 2 degrees. A simple abrasion test (2400 linear abrasion times at a pressure of 5 kPa) was conducted to show that the coating could maintain superhydrophobicity, even after undergoing thirty abrasion times. Meanwhile, it could be easily repaired within one minute of the coating losing Superhydrophobicity under ultra-abrasion. The abrasion only impacted the thickness of the rough strticture (grown on the coating surface by immersion) and had almost no effect on the original thickness of the coating itself. This coating had an extremely long service life and may be useful for a wide range of applications. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Preparation of Durable Superhydrophobic Coatings Based on Discrete Adhesives

Abstract:Due to the low adhesion observed at the interface between solid and liquid, superhydrophobic coatings hold significant promise for various applications, such as self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, and drag reduction. However, a notable challenge hindering their widespread adoption in these domains lies in their delicate durability. In this study, we propose a straightforward method for preparation. The fluorosilicone resin is initially discretized through a gradual introduction of nonsolvent into its solution, followed by thorough mixing and stirring with silica nanoparticles. The resulting mixture is then sprayed onto the substrate surface after drying, forming a self-similar, porous, and rough structure extending from top to bottom. This process yields a coating exhibiting excellent chemical and mechanical durability simultaneously. Using this approach, we achieved a superhydrophobic coating with a contact angle of 156° and a roll angle of 2.2°, with water droplet adhesion of only 10.8 ± 0.4 μN. Remarkably, the coating maintained excellent superhydrophobicity even after undergoing sandpaper abrasion (10 m), tape peeling (30 times), and prolonged water impact (60 min), showing its robust mechanical stability. Furthermore, following exposure to acid, alkali, and aqueous solutions (7 days), UV irradiation (10 days), and extreme temperature variations (–20 °C to 80 °C), the coatings retained their superhydrophobic properties and exhibited good chemical durability. This method offers a novel approach to enhance the durability and practicality of superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:The coexistence of superior antifouling ability and strong substrate adhesion is a typical trade-off for a silicone coating but is highly desirable in numerous applications. Herein, we present a surface-enriched antifouling coating consisting of a bis-silane-terminated polyurea (SPU), an oligosiloxane nanocluster, and a bi-silanol-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with fluorocar-bon and poly(ethylene glycol) side chains as a reactive amphiphilic polymer (RAP). The oligosiloxane nanoclusters can cross-link the flexible SPU into a tough polymer network and interlink the polymer network to the substrate, whereas the low-surface-energy RAP can self-enrich on the surface during coating formation. Such a polysiloxane coating exhibits high transparency (>85% transmittance), high tensile strength (similar to 12 MPa), superior fouling resistance against proteins and bacteria, and strong adhesion strength on various substrates including glass, ceramic, steel, Ti, and epoxy (3-15 MPa). This research provides a universal and tunable approach for the future design of antifouling coatings in flexible electronics, medical devices, and marine industries.
