Abstract:Grey theory is widely used in the settlement prediction of road bed.The algebraic polynomials were used in this paper other than the common gray model to approach the discrete sequences.Grey algebraic curve model is put forward.The coefficients of a algebraic polynomial are considered to be variable,and the recursive formula of the coefficients in the model can be calculated by means of Laplace conditional extremum.On the basis of the characteristics of the varying coefficients' estimation series,GM(1,1)is used to predict the varying coefficients.
A Generalized Multivariate Grey Prediction Model DGM(1, N, I) with Unknown Time Delays

Abstract:The time-lag period is usually assumed to be a fixed value in most multivariate grey prediction models. This assumption makes it hard to describe the real characteristics of the analyzed system. This paper proposes a new modeling method based on a generalized time-delay function, which considers both the dynamics and differences of time series. Then a new model DGM(1,N,tau(i)) is designed and compared with existing grey prediction models. The main advantage of the model DGM (1,N ,tau(i)) is that it describes the additive effect of time-delay variables and offers a new dynamic adjustment method to predict this effect. Another advantage is the generality of model DGM(1,N,tau(i)): it can be extended to several other widely used grey models, such as DGM(1,N), DDGM (1,N) and DDGMD(1,N). Some improvements of the classic grey incidence degree calculation and a new reverse flip sequence operator are provided to reduce the negative effect of subjective modeling factor selection. These optimization methods improve the stability of predictions. A case study of China 's agricultural output forecast is provided to test the new model. It considers several available sample scenarios and includes all situations that result from the subjective judgment of modeling factors. Results show that the new model can model the complex effect of time delays, and it also has higher prediction accuracy than the other three classic models.

Abstract:Owing to the variable characteristics of system structures, traditional grey prediction models with fixed parameters often struggle to accurately capture real-world dynamic changes. In this paper, we propose a novel time-varying polynomial grey model (TPGM) to address this issue. The TPGM leverages polynomial functions to approximate time-varying parameters, enabling it to capture trend variations effectively. Through integral matching, TPGM is reduced to an equivalent integro-differential equation (ITPGM) that allows direct modeling of the original time series. Then, the integral transformation and least-squares are employed to estimate model parameters, and a data-driven algorithm based on subset selection is designed to adaptively identify the optimal model structure. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to evaluate model performance, and the results show that the ITPGM model has higher forecasting accuracy and robustness. Finally, two real-world cases of supply chain forecasting demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art forecasting methods.

Study on time-dependent parameter model of settlement prediction with applications

Abstract:At present, most settlement prediction models are based on the assumption that the parameters in the model are constant during the developing settlement. It is known that this is not true, and must influence the prediction precision of the model. When the prediction model parameters vary with time, the responses prediction can be divided into two parts: one is the prediction of the prediction model parameters, the other is the responses prediction based on the parameters prediction. The time-dependent parameter model was developed on basis of the grey model GM(1,1), and the functions of the parameters are polynomials whose coefficients are solved by the principle of least squares. Finally, the time-dependent parameter grey model GM (1,1) is used to predict settlement. The case study showed that the time-dependent parameter model has high prediction precision.

Abstract:The grey prediction model, as a time-series analysis tool, has been used in various fields only with partly known distribution information. The grey polynomial model is a novel method to solve the problem that the original sequence is in accord with a more general trend rather than the special homogeneous or non-homogeneous trend, but how to select the polynomial order still needs further study. In this paper the tuned background coefficient is introduced into the grey polynomial model and then the algorithmic framework for polynomial order selection, background coefficient search and parameter estimation is proposed. The quantitative relations between the affine transformation of accumulating sequence and the parameter estimates are deduced. The modeling performance proves to be independent of the affine transformation. The numerical example and application are carried out to assess the modeling efficiency in comparison with other conventional models.

Abstract:To solve the problem that the grey multivariate prediction model cannot well simulate systems with periodic oscillations, a novel multivariate grey model called the GM(1,N|sin) power model is proposed. The power exponential term and dynamic sinusoidal function are developed to represent the nonlinear relationship and periodic oscillations of the independent and dependent variables in the proposed model, respectively. First, the discrete time response formula for generating the simulated values at each time point is given. Second, the nonlinear programming model based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm is established to solve the power exponential and periodic coefficients. In addition, to enhance the generalization ability of the parameters, an improved nonlinear programming model considering the accuracy of the validation set is constructed. Finally, in the case studies, the quarterly electricity consumption of Jiangsu Province and PM 2.5 concentrations in Nanjing are adopted to test the effectiveness of this model, and the results are obtained respectively through the GM(1,N|sin) power model and alternative models. The results indicate that the accuracy of GM(1,N|sin) power model in the time series with periodic oscillations outperforms the other six models in this paper.

Abstract:In grey system theory, the performance of an established grey forecasting model largely depends on how efficiently the grey information can be measured from data. Most existing grey forecasting models use grey accumulating generators to obtain grey information. However, not all grey information helps improve the performance of grey forecasting models. Consequently, simple accumulation leads to the accumulation of error from invalid grey information, which deteriorates the model performance. To address this issue, valid and invalid grey information were defined in this study according their contributions to the model performance. Further, it was proposed to use a Bernoulli distribution to simulate the distribution of valid/invalid grey information . Based on that probability, a probabilistic accumulation operator was designed to compute grey information, and this grey information was utilized to establish a probabilistic accumulation operator-based grey forecasting model (PGM(1,1)). PGM(1,1) is advanced in terms of forecasting because it is not negatively affected by invalid grey information. PGM(1,1) was tested on five public datasets and compared to other grey models as well as a wide range of other forecasting models, achieving state-of-the-art performance. In addition, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to demonstrate how the forecasting performance benefits from identifying valid/invalid grey information in PGM(1,1).

Abstract:Prediction of the railway freight volume is the important basis of policy-making departments to make strategies. In practice, it's difficult to get all the information that affect freight transport volume, so using grey forecasting model will reach the target with only poor information. In this paper, the GM (1, 1) model, Dynamic GM(1, 1) model and modified residual error GM(1, 1) model are used to predict the rail freight volume and test the precision of the models. The experiment result shows that modified residual error GM(1,1)model has the highest accuracy and is suitable for short-time forecasting of freight volume. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Exponential smoothing is one of the most commonly used prediction methods. When the data has obvious periodicity and seasonality, Holt–Winters usually has a good prediction performance. However, the predicted results often do not meet our expectations when the trend of the original data is not clear. To further reduce the randomness of time series, a new method combining grey generating operator with the traditional Holt–Winters is proposed. The accumulated sequence by grey generating operator can have obvious variation law. Three practical examples were selected to evaluate the forecasting performance of this proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed model can substantially have the better forecasting capability than traditional Holt–Winters method.
A novel multi-variable grey forecasting model and its application in forecasting the grain production in China

Abstract:In the multi-variable grey forecasting model GM(1,N), the extreme value of the independent variable is one of the important factors that affect the simulation and prediction results of the dependent variable. In this study, a smooth generation method was used to weaken the influence of the extreme value on the performance of GM(1,N), and a novel multi-variable grey forecasting model NMGM(1,N) based on the smooth generation of independent variable sequences with variable weights was constructed. The parameters of NMGM(1,N) were estimated and proved, and the time-response expression and the final restored expression of NMGM(1,N) were deduced. Besides, the detailed modeling steps were provided, and a MATLAB program for building the new model was developed. Moreover, the evaluation criteria of the model were introduced, and numerical examples were used to test the performance of the model. Lastly, the new model was applied to forecast China's grain production. The global mean relative percentage error of the new model was only 0.689%, in comparison with the ones obtained from the GM(1,N), GM(0,N) and OGM(1,N), which were 4.268%, 3.480% and 1.302% respectively. The findings show that the new model has the best performance, which confirms the effectiveness of the structure improvement.

Abstract:The general grey model GM (1,1) cannot take multi variables into account in forecast problems with several variables relating with each other and few observation data available. In this paper, a self-adapting MGM (1,n) model, which is a grey multi-variable forecasting model, is introduced to solve this problem. The MGM (1,n) model is an extension of GM (1,1) in the case of n variables. Through the application of the grey MGM (1,n) model to statistical data of water consumption in Hangzhou City, satisfying results are obtained. The results show that the proposed method is feasible and effective for application.

Abstract:In this paper,three sliding method is used to optimize grey GM(1,1)model,fuzzy clustering FCM algorithm is used to improve the divide of Markov model group stage,and the weighted Markov chain algorithm with a variety of step length is used to predict the annual precipitation.Then the improved grey model and Markov model is combined to forecast the regional annual precipitation.The results show that the improved grey-Markov model can not only improve the changeful precipitation data prediction accuracy of Markov model,but also make full use of the grey system's advantage of high precision,so improves the prediction accuracy.

Abstract:As a tool for analyzing time series, grey prediction models have been widely used in various fields of society due to their higher prediction accuracy and the advantages of small sample modeling. The basic GM (1, N) model is the most popular and important grey model, in which the first “1” stands for the “first order” and the second “N” represents the “multivariate.” The construction of the background values is not only an important step in grey modeling but also the key factor that affects the prediction accuracy of the grey prediction models. In order to further improve the prediction accuracy of the multivariate grey prediction models, this paper establishes a novel multivariate grey prediction model based on dynamic background values (abbreviated as DBGM (1, N) model) and uses the whale optimization algorithm to solve the optimal parameters of the model. The DBGM (1, N) model can adapt to different time series by changing parameters to achieve the purpose of improving prediction accuracy. It is a grey prediction model with extremely strong adaptability. Finally, four cases are used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the model. The results show that the proposed model significantly outperforms the other 2 multivariate grey prediction models.

Abstract:Because of the advantage of the gray theory for forecasting small sample time data, gray algorithm theory has definitely been extensively utilized since it has been proposed and is currently being widely developed for predicting frames particularly in small sample problems. This article presented a viewpoint called gray algorithm by neuron- based ordinary-differential equation (NODE), called NODGM (neuron-based ordinary-differential gray-mode). In this type, we learn prediction methods through a training process that includes whiting equations. Compared with other models, the structure and time series via the regularity of real-samples are required in advance, so this NODGM design can have a better feasibility of applications and also study the origins of data according to different samples. The purpose is obtaining a better design with high forecast effectiveness, this study uses NODGM to train the model, while Runge-Kutta method is used to have the forecast set and solve numerical framwork. This algorithmic design creates a favorable theoretical basis for the installation of new process and distributes the numerical dimensions of completely mechanically elastic vehicle wheels (MEVW) in practical simulations.

Abstract:Seasonal demand forecasting is critical for effective supply chain management. However, conventional forecasting methods face difficulties accurately estimating seasonal variations, owing to time-varying demand trends and limited data availability. In this paper, we propose a Fourier time-varying grey model (FTGM) to tackle this issue. The FTGM builds upon grey models, which are effective with limited data, and leverages Fourier functions to approximate time-varying parameters that allow it to represent seasonal variations. A data-driven selection algorithm adaptively determines the appropriate Fourier order of the FTGM without prior knowledge of data characteristics. Using the well-known M5 competition data, we compare our model with state-of-the-art forecasting methods taken from grey models, statistical methods, and architectures of neural network-based methods. The experimental results show that the FTGM outperforms popular seasonal forecasting methods in terms of standard accuracy metrics, providing a competitive alternative for seasonal demand forecasting in retail companies.

Abstract:Power load has the characteristic of nonlinear fluctuation and random growth. Aiming at the drawback that the forecasting accuracy of general GM(1,1) model goes down when there is a greater load mutation, this paper proposes a new grey model with grey correlation contest for short-term power load forecasting. In order to cover the impact of various certain and uncertain factors in climate and society on the model as fully as possible, original series are selected from different viewpoints to construct different forecasting strategies. By making full use of the characteristic that GM(1,1) model can give a perfect forecasting result in the smooth rise and drop phase of power load, and the feature that there are several peaks and valleys within daily power load, the predicted day is divided into several smooth segments for separate forecasting. Finally, the different forecasting strategies are implemented respectively in the different segments through grey correlation contest, so as to avoid the error amplification resulted from the improper choice of initial condition. A practical application verifies that, compared with the existing grey forecasting models, the proposed model is a stable and feasible forecasting model with a higher forecasting accuracy.

Abstract:Accurate mid-to-long term China's renewable energy forecasting is becoming more and more important for integrating renewable energy systems with smart grid and energy strategic planning. For this purpose, this paper proposes a novel fractional structural adaptive grey Chebyshev polynomial Bernoulli model. The new model is based on NGBM(1,1) model to describe nonlinear phenomena. The proposed adjacent accumulation operator can balance old and new information accumulation with less fluctuation. The introduction of the Chebyshev polynomial enables the model to adaptively adjust the structure of the model, which reduces the difficulty of the modeler's operation from the point of view of the expert system. Meanwhile, an improved Grey Wolf optimization algorithm (IGWO) was used to optimize the parameters. Four real cases of renewable energy in China, including production and consumption are used for verification. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation and probability density analysis illustrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, the development of the four cases in the next 5 years is predicted.

Abstract:Purpose Gross domestic product (GDP) is an important indicator to measure a country's economic development. If the future development trend of a country's GDP can be accurately predicted, it will have a positive effect on the formulation and implementation of the country's future economic development policies. In order to explore the future development trend of China's GDP, the purpose of this paper is to establish a new grey forecasting model with time power term to forecast GDP. Design/methodology/approach Firstly, the shortcomings of the traditional grey prediction model with time power term are found out through analysis, and then the generalized grey prediction model with time power term is established (abbreviated as PTGM (1,1, α) model). Secondly, the PTGM (1,1, α) model is improved by linear interpolation method, and the optimized PTGM (1,1, α) model is established (abbreviated as OPTGM (1,1, α) model), and the parameters of the OPTGM (1,1, α) model are solved by the quantum genetic algorithm. Thirdly, the advantage of the OPTGM (1,1, α) model over the traditional grey models is illustrated by two real cases. Finally the OPTGM (1,1, α) model is used to predict China's GDP from 2020 to 2029. Findings The OPTGM (1,1, α) model is more suitable for predicting China's GDP than other grey prediction models. Originality/value A new grey prediction model with time power term is proposed.
Time series analysis of grey forecasting based on wavelet transform and its prediction applications

Abstract:Grey forecasting based on GM (1,1) has become an important methodology in time series analysis. But due to the limitation of predicting non-stationary time series, an improved grey forecasting GM (1,1) model with wavelet transform was proposed. The time series data was first decomposed to different scales by wavelet transform with à trous algorithm previous of Mallat algorithm in the parallel movement of time series, and then the decomposed time series were forecasted by GM (1,1) model to obtain forecasting results of the original time series. Time series prediction capability of GM (1,1) combined with wavelet transform was compared with that of traditional GM (1,1) model and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to energy source consumption and production forecasting in China. To effectiveness of these methods, eighteen years of time series records (1985 to 2002) for energy source consumption and production were used. The forecasting result from GM (1,1) model with wavelet transform for the data from 2000 to 2002 presented highest precision of three models. It shows that the GM (1,1) model with wavelet transform is more accurate and performs better than traditional GM (1,1) and ARIMA model.
