Abstract:This article describes the preparation of ultracold heteronuclear polar excited NaCs molecules through photoassociation in a dual-species magneto-optical trap. Ten resonant positions are observed below the Na (3S(1/2)) + Cs (6P(1/2)) dissociation limit using trap-loss spectroscopy based on a highly sensitive modulation technique. We deduce the long-range molecular coefficients by fitting an improved LeRoy-Bernstein formula to our experimental data using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm implemented in Mathematica software, and derive the empirical potential energy curve in the long-range region; we also verify the application of the improved LeRoy-Bernstein formula to the ultracold NaCs molecule. Abstract:We report on the production of ultracold heteronuclear NaCs* molecules in a dual-species magneto-optical trap through photoassociation. The electronically excited molecules are formed below the Na (3S1/2) + Cs (6P1/2) dissociation limit. 12 resonance lines are detected using trap-loss spectroscopy based on a highly sensitive modulation technique. The highest observed rovibrational level exhibits clear hyperfine structure, which is detected for the first time. This structure is simulated within a simplified model consisting of 4 coupled levels belonging to the initially unperturbed Hund’s case “a” electronic states, which have been explored in our previous work that dealt with the Na (3S1/2) + Cs (6P3/2) asymptote [W. Liu et al., Phys. Rev. A 94, 032518 (2016)].

Abstract:Ultracold metastable RbCs molecules are observed in a double species MOT through photoassociation near the Rb(5S$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6P$_{3/2}$) dissociation limit followed by radiative stabilization. The molecules are formed in their lowest triplet electronic state and are detected by resonant enhanced two-photon ionization through the previously unobserved $(3)^{3}\Pi \leftarrow a^{3}\Sigma^{+}$ band. The large rotational structure of the observed photoassociation lines is assigned to the lowest vibrational levels of the $0^+,0^-$ excited states correlated to the Rb(5P$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6S$_{1/2}$) dissociation limit. This demonstrates the possibility to induce direct photoassociation in heteronuclear alkali-metal molecules at short internuclear distance, as pointed out in [J. Deiglmayr \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 13304 (2008)].

Triatomic Photoassociation in an Ultracold Atom-Molecule Collision

Abstract:Ultracold collisions of neutral atoms and molecules have been of great interest since experimental advances enabled the cooling and trapping of such species. This study is a theoretical investigation of a low-energy collision between an alkali atom and a diatomic molecule, accompanied by absorption of a photon from an external electromagnetic field. The long-range interaction between the two species is treated, including the atomic spin-orbit interaction. The long-range potential energy curves for the triatomic complex are calculated in realistic detail, while the short-range behavior is mimicked by applying different boundary conditions at the van der Waals length. The photoassociation (PA) rate of an atom colliding with a dimer is calculated for different alkali atoms, namely Na and Cs. The model developed in this study is also tested against known results for the formation rate of the Cs$_3$ complex via PA, namely to compare with the work done by Rios et al., PRL 115, 073201 (2015), and the results are in generally good agreement.

Abstract:We report photoassociation (PA) of ultracold Na and Cs atoms in a dual-species magneto-optical trap. Trap loss spectroscopy of the ultracold polar NaCs molecules formed by PA, which carries information about relative PA transition strengths, has been experimentally obtained by using highly sensitive modulation spectroscopy technique. The fine and hyperfine effects at near-dissociation levels of NaCs molecular $c\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ state are observed and modeled. The interaction Hamiltonian is described in terms of the Hund's case ($a$) coupling scheme. The molecular hyperfine structure of near-dissociation levels is simulated within a simplified model of four interacting vibrational levels belonging to different initially unperturbed electronic states. The results of the simulation infer that the interaction parameters of the observed near-dissociation levels are close to the asymptotic parameters of the pair of atoms. The coupling of the electronic states is essential for forming the hyperfine structure.

Abstract:We obtain the interaction potential for NaCs by fitting to experiments on ultracold scattering and spectroscopy in optical tweezers. The central region of the potential has been accurately determined from Fourier-Transform spectroscopy at higher temperatures, so we focus on adjusting the long-range and short-range parts. We use coupled-channel calculations of binding energies and wave functions to understand the nature of the molecular states observed in ultracold spectroscopy, and of the state that causes the Feshbach resonance used to create ultracold NaCs molecules. We elucidate the relationships between the experimental quantities and features of the interaction potential. We establish the combinations of experimental quantities that determine particular features of the potential. We find that the long-range dispersion coefficient $C_6$ must be increased by about 0.9% to 3256(1) $E_\textrm{h} a_0^6$ to fit the experimental results. We use coupled-channel calculations on the final potential to predict bound-state energies and resonance positions.

Abstract:Chemical reactions can be surprisingly efficient at ultracold temperatures ( < 1mK) due to the wave nature of atoms and molecules. The study of reactions in the ultracold regime is a new research frontier enabled by cooling and trapping techniques developed in atomic and molecular physics. In addition, ultracold molecular gases that offer diverse molecular internal states and large electric dipolar interactions are sought after for studies of strongly interacting many-body quantum physics. Here we propose a new approach for producing ultracold molecules in the absolute internal and motional quantum ground state, where single molecules are assembled one by one from individual atoms. The scheme involves laser cooling, optical trapping, Raman sideband cooling, and coherent molecular state transfer. As a crucial initial step, we demonstrate quantum control of constituent atoms, including 3D ground-state cooling of a single Cs atom, in a simple apparatus. As laser technology advances to shorter wavelengths, additional atoms will be amenable to laser-cooling, allowing more diverse, and eventually more complex, molecules to be assembled with full quantum control.

Abstract:Photoassociation of ultracold atoms is a resonant light-assisted collision process, in which two colliding atoms absorb a photon and form an excited molecule. Since the first observation about three decades ago, the photoassociation of ultracold atoms has made a significant impact on the study of ultracold atoms and molecules. Extending the photoassociation of atoms to the photoassociation of atom-molecule pairs or molecule-molecule pairs will offer many new opportunities in the study of precision polyatomic molecular spectroscopy, formation of ultracold polyatomic molecules, and quantum control of molecular collisions and reactions. However, the high density of states and the photoexcitation of the collision complex by the trapping laser make photoassociation into well-defined quantum states of polyatomic molecules extremely difficult. Here we report on the observation of photoassociation resonances in ultracold collisions between $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules and $^{40}$K atoms. We perform photoassociation in a long-wavelength optical dipole trap to form deeply bound triatomic molecules in the electronically excited states. The atom-molecule Feshbach resonance is used to enhance the free-bound Franck-Condon overlap. The photoassociation into well-defined quantum states of excited triatomic molecules is identified by observing resonantly enhanced loss features. These loss features depend on the polarization of the photoassociation lasers, allowing us to assign the rotational quantum numbers. The observation of ultracold atom-molecule photoassociation resonances paves the way toward preparing ground-state triatomic molecules, provides a new high-resolution spectroscopy technique for polyatomic molecules, and is also important to atom-molecule Feshbach resonances.

Abstract:Ultracold polyatomic molecules offer intriguing new opportunities in cold chemistry, precision measurements, and quantum information processing, thanks to their rich internal structure. However, their increased complexity compared to diatomic molecules presents a formidable challenge to employ conventional cooling techniques. Here, we demonstrate a new approach to create ultracold polyatomic molecules by electroassociation in a degenerate Fermi gas of microwave-dressed polar molecules through a field-linked resonance. Starting from ground state NaK molecules, we create around $1.1\times 10^3$ tetratomic (NaK)$_2$ molecules, with a phase space density of $0.040(3)$ at a temperature of $134(3)\,\text{nK}$, more than $3000$ times colder than previously realized tetratomic molecules. We observe a maximum tetramer lifetime of $8(2)\,\text{ms}$ in free space without a notable change in the presence of an optical dipole trap, indicating these tetramers are collisionally stable. The measured binding energy and lifetime agree well with parameter-free calculations, which outlines pathways to further increase the lifetime of the tetramers. Moreover, we directly image the dissociated tetramers through microwave-field modulation to probe the anisotropy of their wave function in momentum space. Our result demonstrates a universal tool for assembling ultracold polyatomic molecules from smaller polar molecules, which is a crucial step towards Bose--Einstein condensation (BEC) of polyatomic molecules and towards a new crossover from a dipolar Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a BEC of tetramers. Additionally, the long-lived FL state provides an ideal starting point for deterministic optical transfer to deeply bound tetramer states.

Coherent optical creation of a single molecule

Abstract:We report coherent association of atoms into a single weakly bound NaCs molecule in an optical tweezer through an optical Raman transition. The Raman technique uses a deeply bound electronic excited intermediate state to achieve a large transition dipole moment while reducing photon scattering. Starting from two atoms in their relative motional ground state, we achieve an optical transfer efficiency of 69%. The molecules have a binding energy of 770.2MHz at 8.83(2)G. This technique does not rely on Feshbach resonances or narrow excited-state lines and may allow a wide range of molecular species to be assembled atom-by-atom.

Modeling photoassociative spectra of ultracold NaK+K

Abstract:A model for photoassociation of ultracold atoms and molecules is presented, and applied to the case of $^{39}$K and $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K bosonic particles. The model relies on the assumption that photoaossociation is dominated by long-range atom-molecule interactions, well outside the chemical bond region. The frequency of the photoassociation laser is chosen close to a bound-bound rovibronic transition from the $X^1\Sigma^+$ ground state toward the metastable $b^3\Pi$ lowest excited state of $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K, allowing to neglect any other excitation which could hinder the photoassociation detection. The energy level structure of the long-range $^{39}$K$\cdots$$^{23}$Na$^{39}$K excited super-dimer is computed in the space-fixed frame by solving coupled-channel equations, involving the coupling between the $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K internal rotation with the mechanical rotation of the super-dimer complex. A quite rich structure is obtained, and the corresponding photoassociation rates are presented. Other possible photossociation transitions are discussed in the context of the proposed model.

Abstract:Obtaining effective spontaneous radiative transition channels is a fundamental topic in the preparation of ultracold rovibrational ground states of molecules. Herein, the ranges of prospective transition channels in the NaCs dimer are predicted via exploring the complex energy level structure and transition properties. The potential energy curves of Lambda-S states and Omega states, spectroscopy constants, absolute energies of bound states, and transition information (Frank-Condon factors, lifetimes, transition dipole moments) have been researched. With this purpose, the results of our experiment on binding energies of the b(3)Pi(0)+ rovibrational states are analyzed; the transition from the higher (photoassociated) (1)Pi state to the ground X-1 Sigma(+) state is discussed. The wavelengths of the two lasers are predicted as 622.8-656.7 nm and 896.3-969.8 nm with the B-1 Pi(1) and c(3)Sigma(+)(1) states, respectively, for the stimulated raman adiabatic passage method.
Molecular assembly of ground state cooled single atoms

Abstract:We demonstrate full quantum state control of two species of single atoms using optical tweezers and assemble the atoms into a molecule. Our demonstration includes 3D ground-state cooling of a single atom (Cs) in an optical tweezer, transport by several microns with minimal heating, and merging with a single Na atom. Subsequently, both atoms occupy the simultaneous motional ground state with 61(4)\% probability. This realizes a sample of exactly two co-trapped atoms near the phase-space-density limit of one, and allows for efficient stimulated-Raman transfer of a pair of atoms into a molecular bound state of the triplet electronic ground potential $a^3\Sigma^+$. The results are key steps toward coherent creation of single ultracold molecules, for future exploration of quantum simulation and quantum information processing.

Abstract:We explore the feasibility of optically forming long-range tetratomic and larger polyatomic molecules in their ground electronic state from ultracold pairs of polar molecules aligned by external fields. Depending on the relative orientation of the interacting diatomic molecules, we find that a tetratomic can be formed either as a weakly bound complex in a very extended halo state or as a pure long-range molecule composed of collinear or nearly-collinear diatomic molecules. The latter is a novel type of tetratomic molecule comprised of two diatomic molecules bound at long intermolecular range and predicted to be stable in cold and ultracold regimes. Our numerical studies were conducted for ultracold KRb and RbCs, resulting in production of (KRb)$_2$ and (RbCs)$_2$ complexes, respectively. Based on universal properties of long-range interactions between polar molecules, we identify triatomic and tetratomic linear polar molecules with favorable ratio of dipole and quadrupole moments for which the apporach could be generalized to form polyatomic molecules.

Abstract:The generation of cold molecules is a core topic in the field of cold atoms and molecules, which has advanced relevant research like ultracold chemistry, quantum computation, and quantum metrology. With high atomic phase space density, optical dipole trap has been widely performed to prepare and trap cold molecules, and can also be further developed for multiple cold molecule formation and dynamics study. In this work, Rb2 molecules are photoassociated in the magneto-optical trap to obtain precise rovibrational spectroscopy, which provides accurate numerical references for multiple photoassociations. By achieving the harsh requirements of photoassociation in the optical dipole trap, the cold molecule photoassociation process is well explored, and different rovibrational cold molecules are formed in the optical dipole trap for the first time. This method can be universally extended to simultaneously photoassociate various molecules with different internal states or atomic species in just one optical dipole trap, and then advance generous cold molecule research such as cold molecule collision dynamics.

Abstract:Studies on the interactions between an alkali atom and an alkaline earth ion at low energy are important in the field of cold chemistry. In this paper we, extensively, study the structure, interactions, and dynamics of (MgCs)$^+$ molecular ion. We use an ab initio approach based on the formalism of non-empirical pseudo-potential for Mg$^{2+}$ and Cs$^+$ cores, large Gaussian basis sets and full valence configuration interaction. In this context, the (MgCs)$^+$ cation is treated as an effective two-electron system. Potential energy curves and their spectroscopic constants for the ground and the first 41 excited states of $^{1,3}\Sigma^+$, $^{1,3}\Pi$ and $^{1,3}\Delta$ symmetries are determined. Furthermore, we identify the avoided crossings between the electronic states of $^{1,3}\Sigma^+$ and $^{1,3}\Pi$ symmetries. These crossings are related to the charge transfer process between the two ionic limits Mg/Cs$^+$ and Mg$^+$/Cs. In addition, vibrational-level spacings, the transition and permanent dipole moments are presented and analysed. Using the produced potential energy data, the ground-state scattering wave functions and elastic cross sections for a wide range of energies are performed. Furthermore, we predict the formation of translationally and rotationally cold molecular ion (MgCs) + in the ground state electronic potential energy by stimulated Raman type process aided by ion-atom cold collision. In the low energy limit (< 1 mK), elastic scattering cross sections exhibit Wigner law threshold behaviour; while in the high energy limit the cross sections as a function of energy E go as E$^{-1/3}$. A qualitative discussion about the possibilities of forming the cold (MgCs)$^+$ molecular ions by photoassociative spectroscopy is presented.

Alignment Transport Between Ultracold Polar Molecules

Abstract:We propose an array of ultracold polar molecules as a platform to study alignment transport between molecules. We envision a polar molecule being aligned with an intense off-resonant laser field whose alignment migrates to a nearby molecule due to dipole-dipole interactions. Our results show that the transport of the alignment is due to a complex interplay between electric field-driven excitations and dipole-dipole interactions. All mechanisms for transfer are elucidated and analyzed, and using NaCs, a prototype molecule, we find that the time for alignment transfer is $\mathcal{O}(10\mu\rm s)$, which makes the phenomena readily observable in the lab.
