Topological defect-mediated morphodynamics of active–active interfaces

Abstract:Physical interfaces widely exist in nature and engineering. Although the formation of passive interfaces is well elucidated, the physical principles governing active interfaces remain largely unknown. Here, we combine simulation, theory, and cell-based experiment to investigate the evolution of an active–active interface. We adopt a biphasic framework of active nematic liquid crystals. We find that long-lived topological defects mechanically energized by activity display unanticipated dynamics nearby the interface, where defects perform "U-turns" to keep away from the interface, push the interface to develop local fingers, or penetrate the interface to enter the opposite phase, driving interfacial morphogenesis and cross-interface defect transport. We identify that the emergent interfacial morphodynamics stems from the instability of the interface and is further driven by the activity-dependent defect–interface interactions. Experiments of interacting multicellular monolayers with extensile and contractile differences in cell activity have confirmed our predictions. These findings reveal a crucial role of topological defects in active–active interfaces during, for example, boundary formation and tissue competition that underlie organogenesis and clinically relevant disorders.

Abstract:Controlling interfaces of phase separating fluid mixtures is key to creating diverse functional soft materials. Traditionally, this is accomplished with surface-modifying chemical agents. Using experiment and theory, we study how mechanical activity shapes soft interfaces that separate an active and a passive fluid. Chaotic flows in the active fluid give rise to giant interfacial fluctuations and non-inertial propagating active waves. At high activities, stresses disrupt interface continuity and drive droplet generation, producing an emulsion-like active state comprised of finite-sized droplets. When in contact with a solid boundary, active interfaces exhibit non-equilibrium wetting transitions, wherein the fluid climbs the wall against gravity. These results demonstrate the promise of mechanically driven interfaces for creating a new class of soft active matter.

Abstract:In this paper, a thermaldynamical consistent model for mass transfer across permeable moving interfaces is proposed by using the energy variation method. We consider a restricted diffusion problem where the flux across the interface depends on its conductance and the difference of the concentration on each side. The diffusive interface phase-field framework used here has several advantages over the sharp interface method. First of all, explicit tracking of the interface is no longer necessary. Secondly, interfacial conditions can be incorporated with a variable diffusion coefficient. Finally, topological changes of interfaces can be handed easily. A detailed asymptotic analysis confirms the diffusive interface model converges to the existing sharp interface model as the interface thickness goes to zero. An energy stable numerical scheme is developed to solve this highly nonlinear coupled system.Numerical simulations first illustrate the consistency of theoretical results on the sharp interface limit. Then a convergence study and energy decay test are conducted to ensure the efficiency and stability of the numerical scheme. To illustrate the effectiveness of our phase-field approach, several examples are provided, including a study of a two-phase mass transfer problem where droplets with deformable interfaces are suspended in a moving fluid.

Morphologies and dynamics of free surfaces of crystals composed of active particles

Abstract:Active matter exhibits various collective motions and nonequilibrium phases, such as crystals, whereas their surface properties have been poorly explored. Here, we use Brownian dynamics simulations to investigate the surface morphology and dynamics of two-dimensional active crystals during and after growth. For crystal growth on a substrate, the position and roughness of the crystal surface reach steady states at different times. In the steady state, the surface exhibits superdiffusive behaviour at the short time, and the roughness is insensitive to the roughening process and particle activity. We observe two-stage and three-stage surface roughening at different P{'{e}}clet numbers. The result of dynamic scaling analysis shows that the surface is similar to anomalous roughening, which is distinct from the normal roughening typically found in conventional passive systems. Capillary wave theory for thermal equilibrium system can describe the active surface fluctuations only in the long-wavelength regime, indicating that active particles mainly drive the surface out of equilibrium locally. These similarities and differences between the active and passive crystal surfaces are essential for understanding active crystals and interfaces.

Diffuse Interface Methods for Multiple Phase Materials: An Energetic Variational Approach

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a diffuse interface model for describing the dynamics of mixtures involving multiple (two or more) phases. The coupled hydrodynamical system is derived through an energetic variational approach. The total energy of the system includes the kinetic energy and the mixing (interfacial) energies. The least action principle (or the principle of virtual work) is applied to derive the conservative part of the dynamics, with a focus on the reversible part of the stress tensor arising from the mixing energies. The dissipative part of the dynamics is then introduced through a dissipation function in the energy law, in line with the Onsager principle of least energy dissipation. The final system, formed by a set of coupled time-dependent partial differential equations, reflects a balance among various conservative and dissipative forces and governs the evolution of velocity and phase fields. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, a few two-dimensional simulations have been carried out, including (1) the force balance at the three-phase contact line in equilibrium, (2) a rising bubble penetrating a fluid-fluid interface, and (3) a solid particle falling in a binary fluid. The effects of slip at solid surface have been examined in connection with contact line motion and a pinch-off phenomenon.

Uncovering novel phase transitions in dense dry polar active fluids using a lattice Boltzmann method

Abstract:The dynamics of dry active matter have implications for a diverse collection of biological phenomena spanning a range of length and time scales, such as animal flocking, cell tissue dynamics, and swarming of inserts and bacteria. Uniting these systems are a common set of symmetries and conservation laws, defining dry active fluids as a class of physical system. Many interesting behaviours have been observed at high densities, which remain difficult to simulate due to the computational demand. Here, we show how two-dimensional dry active fluids in a dense regime can be studied using a simple modification of the lattice Boltzmann method. We apply our method on a model that exhibits motility-induced phase separation, and an active model with contact inhibition of locomotion, which has relevance to collective cell migration. For the latter, we uncover multiple novel phase transitions: two first-order and one potentially critical. We further support our simulation results with an analytical treatment of the hydrodynamic equations obtained via a Chapman-Enskog coarse-graining procedure.

Thermodynamics of Non-equilibrium Diffuse-Interfaces in Mesoscale Phase Transformations

Abstract:We present a new phase-field formulation for the non-equilibrium interface kinetics. The diffuse interface is considered an integral of numerous representative volume elements (RVEs), in which there is a two-phase mixture with two conserved and two non-conserved concentration fields. This particular way of separating concentration fields leads to two distinct dissipative processes besides the phase boundary migration, i.e., trans-sharp-interface diffusion between different phases within a single RVE and trans-diffuse-interface diffusion between different RVEs within a single phase. A two-part mechanism is proposed to balance the driving forces and energy dissipation for diffusionless and diffusional processes in RVEs. Moreover, the classical interface friction and solute drag can be recovered by integrating the diffuse interface. Compared with the sharp interface theory, the present diffuse interface can reproduce the atomic simulated partial-drag self-consistently in thermodynamics.

Asymmetric fluctuations and self-folding of active interfaces

Abstract:We study the structure and dynamics of the interface separating a passive fluid from a microtubule-based active fluid. Turbulent-like active flows power giant interfacial fluctuations, which exhibit pronounced asymmetry between regions of positive and negative curvature. Experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical arguments reveal how the interface breaks up the spatial symmetry of the fundamental bend instability to generate local vortical flows that lead to asymmetric interface fluctuations. The magnitude of interface deformations increases with activity: In the high activity limit, the interface self-folds invaginating passive droplets and generating a foam-like phase, where active fluid is perforated with passive droplets. These results demonstrate how active stresses control the structure, dynamics, and break-up of soft, deformable, and reconfigurable liquid-liquid interfaces.

Abstract:We present an overview of phase field modeling of active matter systems as a tool for capturing various aspects of complex and active interfaces. We first describe how interfaces between different phases are characterized in phase field models and provide simple fundamental governing equations that describe their evolution. For a simple model, we then show how physical properties of the interface, such as surface tension and interface thickness, can be recovered from these equations. We then explain how the phase field formulation can be coupled to various active matter realizations and discuss three particular examples of continuum biphasic active matter: active nematic-isotropic interfaces, active matter in viscoelastic environments, and active shells in fluid background. Finally, we describe how multiple phase fields can be used to model active cellular monolayers and present a general framework that can be applied to the study of tissue behaviour and collective migration.

Surface Tension Between Coexisting Phases of Active Brownian Particles

Abstract:The confliction between the stable interface in phase-separated active Brownian particles and its negative surface tension, obtained mechanically via the active pressure, has sparked considerable debate about the formula of active surface tension. Based on the intrinsic pressure of active system, we here derive a proper mechanical expression of active surface tension by calculating the work required to create a differential interface area, while remaining interfacial profile invariant (not considered previously). Our expression yields a significantly positive surface tension that increases with the particle actvity, which is supported by mechanical analysis on the interface. Our results thus fundamentally resolve the contradiction related to active surface tension.

Phase Field Model for Non-equilibrium Interface Conditions

Abstract:This article presents a new phase-field formulation for non-equilibrium interface conditions in rapid phase transformations. With a particular way of defining concentration fields, the classical sharp and diffuse (thick) interface theories are unified into the present phase-field model. Each point inside the diffuse interface is comparable to the classical sharp interface model, governed by phase boundary migration and short-range atomic exchanges and connected by long-range diffusion. Their thermodynamic forces and fluxes are following the Onsager reciprocal relation and consistent with the classical irreversible thermodynamics. Furthermore, we establish the balance of driving forces and energy dissipations for both the diffuse interface and the single point inside it. The model is then validated by rapid solidification of Al-Cu alloys. With an effective mobility of considering non-equilibrium long-range diffusion, the model represents the main characteristics of non-equilibrium interface kinetics, i.e., solute trapping and solute drag. Especially, we reproduce the complete trapping at the high-velocity regime and provide a thermodynamic consistent description of the partial drag phenomena at the low-velocity region. Moreover, the dissipation analysis indicates that even the far-from-equilibrium diffuse interface is composed of numerous representative volume elements near the equilibrium, providing a new understanding of non-equilibrium interfaces.

Abstract:Interface mechanics can significantly govern the evolution of multiple phases on smaller scales, e.g., determining the properties of TWIP- and TRIP-steels, geopolymers or Li-ion batteries. The present contribution is specifically centered around the influence of interface elasticity on mechanically induced phase transformations. A geometrically exact finite element framework is developed for this purpose based on incremental energy minimization. It is set up in three-dimensional space and comprises an Allen-Cahn type phase field formulation based on a Modica-Mortola double-well functional, as well as a Ginzburg-Landau type viscosity formulation. The phase field approximation of the interface deformation gradient is derived by means of homogenization theory. A monolithic solver is employed for the resulting set of non-linear coupled equations. The example of coalescing spheres shows that larger interface energies can amplify and accelerate coalescence. Lower interface energies, in contrast, allow for distinct spreading of the energetically favorable bulk phase. Deformation-dependent interface energies particularly add stress peaks to this process that are localized at the phase transition zone. The relaxation of a stepped interface shape showed that deformation-dependent interface energies favor a plane partition of the bulk phases. Yet, they also delay breakup events compared to simple constant interface energies. This peculiarity can be beneficial for calibration purposes. Strain dependence moreover causes an additional elastic stiffness in the direction of the interface tangent plane and constitutes thus another origin for anisotropy of the overall structure.

Interface dynamics in a degenerate Cahn-Hilliard model for viscoelastic phase separation

Abstract:The formal sharp-interface asymptotics in a degenerate Cahn-Hilliard model for viscoelastic phase separation with cross-diffusive coupling to a bulk stress variable are shown to lead to non-local lower-order counterparts of the classical surface diffusion flow. The diffuse-interface model is a variant of the Zhou-Zhang-E model and has an Onsager gradient-flow structure with a rank-deficient mobility matrix reflecting the ODE character of stress relaxation. In the case of constant coupling, we find that the evolution of the zero level set of the order parameter approximates the so-called intermediate surface diffusion flow. For non-constant coupling functions monotonically connecting the two phases, our asymptotic analysis leads to a family of third order whose propagation operator behaves like the square root of the minus Laplace-Beltrami operator at leading order. In this case, the normal velocity of the moving sharp interface arises as the Lagrange multiplier in a constrained elliptic equation, which is at the core of our derivation. The constrained elliptic problem can be solved rigorously by a variational argument, and is shown to encode the gradient structure of the effective geometric evolution law. The asymptotics are presented for deep quench, an intermediate free boundary problem based on the double-obstacle potential.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the morphodynamics of the active-inactive cell monolayer interfaces by using the active liquid crystal model. Methods: A continuum mechanical model was established based on the active liquid crystal theory and the active-inactive cell monolayer interfaces were established by setting the activity difference of cell monolayers. The theoretical equations were solved numerically by the finite difference and the lattice Boltzmann method. Results: The active-inactive cell interfaces displayed three typical morphologies, namely, flat interface, wavy interface, and finger-like interface. On the flat interfaces, the cells were oriented perpendicular to the interface, the -1/2 topological defects were clustered in the interfaces, and the interfaces were negatively charged. On the wavy interfaces, cells showed no obvious preference for orientation at the interfaces and the interfaces were neutrally charged. On the finger-like interfaces, cells were tangentially oriented at the interfaces, the +1/2 topological defects were collected at the interfaces, driving the growth of the finger-like structures, and the interfaces were positively charged. Conclusion: The orientation of the cell alignment at the interface can significantly affect the morphologies of the active-inactive cell monolayer interfaces, which is closely associated with the dynamics of topological defects at the interfaces.
A thermodynamic and analytical description on the quantitative phase-field model with enhanced interface diffusivity

Abstract:Based on the idea of maintaining physical diffuse interface kinetics, enhancing interfacial diffusivity has recently provided a new direction for quantitative phase-field simulation at microstructural length and time scale. Establishing a general relationship between interface diffusivity and width is vital to facilitate the practical application. However, it is still limited by time-consuming numerical corrections, and its relationship with non-dilute thermodynamic properties still needs to be revealed. In this study, we present a new thermodynamic and analytical method for determining interfacial diffusivity enhancement. Unlike previous numerical corrections of partition coefficients and interface temperature, this new method aims to keep several thermodynamic quantities unchanged after enlarging the interface width. These essential quantities are theoretically proven to be diffusion potential jump across the diffuse interface and free energy dissipation by trans-interface diffusion. Since no dilute approximation has been employed in model derivation, the present method is available for binary alloys with arbitrary thermodynamic properties and can be easily extended to describe multicomponent systems. Therefore, the present method is expected to advance the recent quantitative phase-field framework and facilitate its practical applications.

Abstract:Two-phase systems of microstructured complex fluids are an important class of engineering materials. Their flow behaviour is interesting because of the coupling among three disparate length scales: molecular or supra-molecular conformation inside each component, mesoscopic interfacial morphology and macroscopic hydrodynamics. In this paper, we propose a diffuse-interface approach to simulating the flow of such materials. The diffuse-interface model circumvents certain numerical difficulties in tracking the interface in the classical sharp-interface description. More importantly, our energy-based variational formalism makes it possible to incorporate complex rheology easily, as long as it is due to the evolution of a microstructure describable by a free energy. Thus, complex rheology and interfacial dynamics are treated in a unified framework. An additional advantage of our model is that the energy law of the system guarantees the existence of a solution. We will outline the general approach for any two-phase complex fluids, and then present, as an example, a detailed formulation for an emulsion of nematic drops in a Newtonian matrix. Using spectral discretizations, we compute shear-induced deformation, head-on collision and coalescence of drops where the matrix and drop phases are Newtonian or viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluids. Numerical results are compared with previous studies as a validation of the theoretical model and numerical code. Finally, we simulate the retraction of an extended nematic drop in a Newtonian matrix as a method for measuring interfacial tension.

Interface dynamics of wet active systems

Abstract:We study the roughening of interfaces in phase-separated active suspensions on substrates. At large length and timescales, we show that the interfacial dynamics belongs to the |q|KPZ universality class discussed in Besse et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 187102 (2023). This holds despite the presence of long-ranged fluid flows. At early times, instead, the roughening exponents are the same as those in the presence of a momentum-conserving fluid. Surprisingly, when the effect of substrate friction can be ignored, the interface becomes random beyond a de Gennes-Taupin lengthscale which depends on the interfacial tension.

A phase-field model for active contractile surfaces

Abstract:The morphogenesis of cells and tissues involves an interplay between chemical signals and active forces on their surrounding surface layers. The complex interaction of hydrodynamics and material flows on such active surfaces leads to pattern formation and shape dynamics which can involve topological transitions, for example during cell division. To better understand such processes requires novel numerical tools. Here, we present a phase-field model for an active deformable surface interacting with the surrounding fluids. The model couples hydrodynamics in the bulk to viscous flow along the diffuse surface, driven by active contraction of a surface species. As a new feature in phase-field modeling, we include the viscosity of a diffuse interface and stabilize the interface profile in the Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equation by an auxiliary advection velocity, which is constant normal to the interface. The method is numerically validated with previous results based on linear stability analysis. Further, we highlight some distinct features of the new method, like the avoidance of re-meshing and the inclusion of contact mechanics, as we simulate the self-organized polarization and migration of a cell through a narrow channel. Finally, we study the formation of a contractile ring on the surface and illustrate the capability of the method to resolve topological transitions by a first simulation of a full cell division.

Abstract:We present a new multiphase-field theory for describing pattern formation in multi-domain and/or multi-component systems. The construction of the free energy functional and the dynamic equations is based on criteria that ensure mathematical and physical consistency. We first analyze previous multiphase-field theories, and identify their advantageous and disadvantageous features. On the basis of this analysis, we introduce a new way of constructing the free energy surface, and derive a generalized multiphase description for arbitrary number of phases (or domains). The presented approach retains the variational formalism; reduces (or extends) naturally to lower (or higher) number of fields on the level of both the free energy functional and the dynamic equations; enables the use of arbitrary pairwise equilibrium interfacial properties; penalizes multiple junctions increasingly with the number of phases; ensures non-negative entropy production, and the convergence of the dynamic solutions to the equilibrium solutions; and avoids the appearance of spurious phases on binary interfaces. The new approach is tested for multi-component phase separation and grain coarsening.
