Abstract:The predominantly used channel reciprocity condition in time-division-duplex mode only holds in practical systems if the transmit and receive hardware chains at the base station (BS) and at the user equipments are perfectly calibrated. Otherwise, there is a mismatch between the uplink (UL) and downlink channel state information (CSI) that leads to performance degradations. In this paper, we consider a multi-userMIMO system with hardware calibration errors (CaEs) at the BS and derive robust Bayesian precoders that minimize inter-user interference using the UL CSI and CaEs statistics as side information. The proposed robust precoding outperforms conventional non-robust precoding, and its gains compared to non-robust precoding increase with increasing numbers of users and CaEs. Furthermore, robust precoding can be used to relax calibration requirements, which is a result of practical interest. Our approach is applicable to any number of BS antennas but is especially important for massive MIMO systems where larger CaEs might be expected.

Abstract:This letter addresses the problem of robust transceiver design for the multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink where the channel state information at the base station (BS) is imperfect. A stochastic approach which minimizes the expectation of the total mean square error (MSE) of the downlink conditioned on the channel estimates under a total transmit power constraint is adopted. The iterative algorithm reported in [2] is improved to handle the proposed robust optimization problem. Simulation results show that Our proposed robust scheme effectively reduces the performance loss due to channel uncertainties and out-performs existing methods. especially when the channel errors of the users are different.

Abstract:The performance of multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) downlink systems with precoding and decoding method by minimizing the total mean square error (TMSE) of all data streams of all users (T-MMSE) depends on the accuracy of the channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitter (CSIT). In this paper, a robust transmission scheme is proposed to suppress the interferences among data streams and users caused by imperfect CSIT. At the transmitter, the precoders are obtained through an iterative procedure by minimizing the expectation of the TMSE of all data streams of all users conditioned on the estimated CSI under a total transmit power constraint. At each user, a linear decoder is calculated based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria according to the realtime CSI. To fulfill it, a new pilot-sending architecture is introduced. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is robust not only to the channel uncertainty at the transmitter but also to the channel uncertainty at each user, and can effectively improve the system performance.

Abstract:This paper addresses the joint transceiver design for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, with imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs). By incorporating antenna correlation at both ends of the channel and taking channel estimation errors into account, we solve two robust design problems: minimization of the weighted sum mean-square-error (MSE) and minimization of the maximum weighted MSE. These problems are solved as follows: first, we establish three kinds of MSE uplink-downlink duality by transforming only the power allocation matrices from uplink channel to downlink channel and vice versa. Second, in the uplink channel, we formulate the power allocation part of each problem ensuring global optimality. Finally, based on the solution of the uplink power allocation and the MSE duality results, for each problem, we propose an iterative algorithm that performs optimization alternatively between the uplink and downlink channels. Computer simulations verify the robustness of the proposed design compared to the non-robust/naive design.

Abstract:In this paper, the feasibility of a new downlink transmission mode in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated with two types of users, i.e., the users with only statistical channel state information (CSI) and the users with imperfect instantaneous CSI. The problem of downlink precoding design with mixed utilization of statistical and imperfect instantaneous CSI is addressed. We first theoretically analyze the impact of the mutual interference between the two types of users on their achievable rate. Then, considering the mutual interference suppression, we propose an extended zero forcing and an extended maximum ratio transmission precoding methods to minimize the total transmit power of base station and to maximize the received signal power of users, respectively. Thanks to the exploitation of statistical CSI, pilot-based channel estimation is avoided enabling more active users, higher system sum rate, and shorter transmission delay. Finally, simulations are performed to validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the advantages of the proposed precodingmethods.

Abstract:The performance of multiuser MIMO downlink systems with block diagonalization (BD) relies on the channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter to a great extent. For time division duplex TDD systems, the transmitter estimates the CSI while receiving data at current time slot and then uses the CSI to transmit at the next time slot. When the wireless channel is time-varying, the CSI for transmission is imperfect due to the time delay between the estimation of the channel and the transmission of the data and severely degrades the system performance. In this paper, we propose a linear method to suppress the interferences among users and data streams caused by imperfect CSI at transmitter. The transmitter first sends pilot signals through a linear spatial precoding matrix so as to make possible that the receiver can estimate CSI of other users, and then the receiver exploits a linear prefilter to suppress the interference. The numerical results show that the proposed schemes achieve obvious performance enhancement in comparison to the scheme assuming perfect CSI at the transmitter.

Abstract:The performance of multiuser MIMO-OFDM downlink systems with block diagonalization (BD) depends on the accuracy of the channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitter (CSIT) to a great extent. In time-varying channels, the CSIT is always outdated due to an inherent time delay between the uplink channel estimation and the downlink data transmission in TDD systems. This will lead to drastic degradation in system capacity. In this paper, based on the analysis of the effect of the outdated CSIT on multiuser MIMO- OFDM downlink systems with BD method, two linear processing methods, BD with user selection at the transmitter and total MMSE decoder at the receiver (TBDUS-RTMMSE) and BD at the transmitter and partial MMSE decoder at the receiver (TBD-RPMMSE), are proposed to mitigate the effect. To fulfill them, a new pilot-sending architecture is introduced. Analysis and simulation results show that the two proposed methods can effectively reduce the impairment of the outdated CSIT and improve the system sum capacity in suitable time delay regions of the CSIT.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the effect of the outdated channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitter (CSIT) on multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) downlink systems with block zero-forcing precoding (BZFP) method, two linear processing methods, BZFP at the transmitter with total MMSE decoding at the receiver (TBZF-RTMMSE) and BZFP at the transmitter with partial MMSE decoding at the receiver (TBZF-RPMMSE) are proposed. To fulfill them, a new pilot-sending and channel estimation architecture is introduced. Abstract:In this paper, we consider linear precoding with SINR constraints for the downlink of a multiuser MISO (multiple-input single-output) communication system in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI). The base station is equipped with multiple transmit antennas and each user terminal is equipped with a single receive antenna. We propose a robust design of linear precoder which transmits minimum power to provide the required SINR at the user terminals when the true channel state lies in a region of a given size around the channel state available at the transmitter. We show that this design problem can be formulated as a Second Order Cone Program (SOCP) which can be solved efficiently. We compare the performance of the proposed design with some of the robust designs reported in the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed robust design provides better performance with reduced complexity.

Linear precoding design for MIMO downlink multiuser systems

Abstract:A non-orthogonal precoding based on oblique projection was developed to mitigate co-channel interference and maximize the sum capacity in a multi-user MIMO downlink system. Moreover block diagonalization precoding and complete orthogonal precoding were studied. The oblique projection scheme can hold the channel gain before power water-filling, but the block diagonalization scheme outperforms the oblique projection scheme and the complete orthogonal scheme after power water-filling. Due to limitations on the number of transmit antennas at the base-station, the precoder is integrated with the user scheduling with various schemes used to improve the effective channel gain. Both the theoretical analysis and simulations indicate that linear precoding has good performance with low complexity and practical application.

Abstract:In frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO systems, a major challenge lies in acquiring the downlink channel state information}\ (CSI) at the base station (BS) from limited feedback sent by the user equipment (UE). To tackle this fundamental task, our contribution is twofold: First, a simple feedback framework is proposed, where a compression and Gaussian dithering-based quantization strategy is adopted at the UE side, and then a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is formulated at the BS side. Recoverability of the MIMO channel under the widely used double directional model is established. Specifically, analyses are presented for two compression schemes -- showing one being more overhead-economical and the other computationally lighter at the UE side. Second, to realize the MLE, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is carefully designed to integrate a sophisticated harmonic retrieval (HR) solver as subroutine, which turns out to be the key of effectively tackling this hard MLE <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://problem.Extensive" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> numerical experiments are conducted to validate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:Multi-user MIMO downlink scenario has been paid considerable attentions in recent years for its potential large capacity. However, when there are not enough antennas at the transmitter, making all the users available may not be a good solution. The situation can be improved by selecting the right users among all users at the receiver and meanwhile a maximum capacity can be achieved. In this paper, we use the correlation of channel matrices of users and develop an algorithm to select the right users with low complexity to achieve the total capacity of the whole system. Moreover, we design a strategy to adaptively select receive antennas of users at the receiver which can further increase the capacity of the MIMO system.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of joint linear transceiver design in the downlink of multiuser MIMO systems. We define the performance criterion as minimizing the maximal mean square error among all the data streams (max-MSE) under a total power constraint. The proposed algorithm is based on a dual decomposition technique and it iterates between close-formed precoder/decoder designs. The proposed algorithm outperforms most transceiver optimization algorithms in terms of BER performance. Compared to the algorithm which can achieve the same performance, it has a lower computational complexity.

Abstract:Many precoding schemes in downlink multiuser MIMO systems require perfect channel state information of all users at the transmitter, which is hard to realize in practical systems. Random beamforming scheme is a conventional method to reduce the amount of feedback. However, it only enjoys significant performance gains with a large number of users, which limits its practical application. We propose a limited feedback capacity enhancement scheme based upon grassmannian beamforming for downlink multiuser MIMO systems. In order to get better performance when users with multiple receive antennas we also propose a MMSE based scheme to further eliminate multi-user interference. The proposed scheme outperforms conventional random beamforming scheme when the number of users is small or moderate.

Abstract:This work studies the design of robust transmit beamforming under receiver outage constraint for limited feedback multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks. We propose a new stochastic model to characterize the channel uncertainty resulting from vector quantization-based limited feedback schemes. With this uncertainty model, we develop two convex optimization formulations to minimize the transmitted power subject to per user quality of service (QoS) constraints that are defined in terms of outage probability of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) at a target level. Our numerical results, based on solving the design problem using known convex optimization algorithms, show that both design formulations lead to desired outcomes and satisfy the specified QoS requirements.
Convex optimization based multiuser detection for uplink large-scale MIMO under low-resolution quantization

Abstract:In large-scale Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output, the Base Station (BS) is equipped with a large-size antenna array containing tens even hundreds Radio Frequency channels. If so many RF front-ends adopt the classical receivers, their cost and power consumption during the receiving mode would increase quickly. Therefore, we exploit low-resolution Analog-to-Digital-Convertor to design low-power and low-cost software defined radio receivers for the BS. However, the new problem is how the BS fulfills channel estimation and Multiuser Detection (MUD) under low-resolution quantization. In this paper, first, least square method is used for channel estimation, and a robust Maximum Likelihood (ML) MUD problem is constructed to take into account the channel estimation errors. Second, an iterative multiuser detector is constructed by relaxing the ML MUD problem as a convex optimization problem and then solving the convex problem through the nonmonotone spectral projected gradient method. Compared with the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detector, the proposed detector has lower computational complexity, and is more suitable for hardware implementation. Simulation results show that it also outperforms MMSE.
