Abstract:In this talk I summarize main features of the vector manifestation (VM) which was recently proposed as a novel manifestation of the Wigner realization of chiral symmetry in which the symmetry is restored at the critical point by the massless degenerate pion (and its flavor partners) and the rho meson (and its flavor partners) as the chiral partner. I show how the VM is realized in hot and dense QCD using the effective field theory of QCD based on the hidden local symmetry.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the full Lagrangian of mesons (pseudoscalars, vectors and axial-vectors) to O(p 4) by using the explicit global chiral symmetry and hidden local symmetry in the chiral limit. In this approach, we see that there are many other terms besides the usual eleven terms given in the literature from a hidden local symmetry approach. In particular, there are some terms in our full results which are important for understanding the vector meson dominance and $\pi$-$\pi$ scattering and providing consistent predictions on the decay rates of $a_1\rightarrow\gamma\pi$ and $a_1\rightarrow\rho\pi$ as well as for constructing a consistent effective chiral Lagrangian with chiral perturbation theory. It is likely that the structures of the effective chiral Lagrangian for O(p 4) given in the literature by using hidden local symmetry are incomplete and consequently the resulting couplings are not reliable. We examine the issue that the more general effective chiral Lagrangian given in the present paper can provide more consistent predictions for the low energy phenomenology of the $\rho$-a 1 system and result in more consistent descriptions on the low energy behavior of light flavor mesons.
Masses of vector bosons in two-color dense QCD based on the hidden local symmetry

Abstract:We construct a low energy effective Lagrangian for the two-color QCD including the "vector" bosons (mesons with J^P=1^- and diquark baryons with J^P=1^+) in addition to the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons with a degenerate mass M_\pi (mesons with J^P=0^- and baryons with J^P=0^+) based on the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of SU(2N_f) \to Sp(2N_f) in the framework of the hidden local symmetry. We investigate the dependence of the "vector" boson masses on the baryon number density \mu_B. We show that the \mu_B-dependence signals the phase transition of U(1)_B breaking. We find that it gives information about mixing among "vector" bosons: e.g. the mass difference between \rho and \omega mesons is proportional to the mixing strength between the diquark baryon with J^P=1^+ and the anti-baryon. We discuss the comparison with lattice data for two-color QCD at finite density.

Proving Rho Meson be a Dynamical Gauge Boson of Hidden Local Symmetry

Abstract:The rho meson has long been successfully identified with a dynamical gauge boson of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) $H_{\rm local}$ in the nonlinear sigma model $G/H$ gauge equivalent to the model having the symmetry $G_{\rm global}\times H_{\rm local}$, with $G= [SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R]\simeq O(4), H=SU(2)_{V}\simeq O(3)$, however under a hitherto unproven assumption that its kinetic term is dynamically generated, together with an ad hoc choice of the auxiliary field parameter "$a=2$". We prove this assumption, thereby solving the long-standing mystery: The rho meson kinetic term is generated simply by the large $N$ limit of the Grassmannian model $G/H=O(N)/[O(N-3)\times O(3)] $ gauge equivalent to $O(N)_{\rm global}\times [O(N-3)\times O(3)]_{\rm local}$, extrapolated to $N=4$, $O(4)_{\rm global}\times O(3)_{\rm local}$, with all the phenomenologically successful "$a=2$ results" i.e., $\rho$-universality, KSRF relation and the Vector Meson Dominance, realized {\it independently of the parameter "$a$".} This in turn establishes validity of the large $N$ dynamics at quantitative level directly by the experiments. The relevant cutoff reads $\Lambda \simeq 4 \pi F_\pi$ for $N=4$, which is regarded as a matching scale of the HLS as a "magnetic dual" to QCD. Skyrmion is stabilized by such a dynamically generated rho meson without recourse to the underlying QCD, further signal of the duality. The unbroken phase with massless rho meson may be realized as a novel chiral restored hadronic phase in hot/dense QCD.

Abstract:Equivalence of the hidden local symmetry formulation with non-minimal interactions and the anti-symmetric tensor field method of $\rho$ and $a_1$ mesons in the chiral lagrangian is shown by using the auxiliary field method. Violation of the KSRF I relation, which becomes important in the application of chiral lagrangian to {\em non QCD-like} technicolor models can be parametrized by non-minimal coupling in the hidden local symmetry formalism keeping low energy theorem of hidden local symmetry. We also obtain explicit correspondence of parameters in both formulations.

Vector meson effects on the multi-skyrmion states from the rational map ansatz

Abstract:The roles of the lightest vector mesons $\rho$ and $\omega$ in the multi-skyrmion states are studied using the hidden local symmetry approach upto the next to leading order including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. The low energy constants in the effective field theory are determined by using the Sakai-Sugimoto model and the flat-space five-dimensional Yang-Mills action. With only two inputs, $m_\rho$, and $f_\pi$, all the low energy constants can be determined without ambiguity. The vector meson effects can be investigated by integrating them in order and the influence from the geometry can be clarified by comparing the results using the low energy constants estimated from the Sakai-Sugimoto model and the flat-space five-dimensional Yang-Mills action. We find that the $\rho$ meson reduces the masses of the multi-skyrmion states and increases the overlaps of the constituents of the multi-skyrmion states while the $\omega$ meson repulses the constituents of the multi-skyrmion states and increases their masses, therefore these vector mesons are important in Skyrme model approach to nuclei. we also find that the warping factor which is an essential element in the holographic model of QCD affects the properties of the multi-skyrmion states and cannot be ignored.

Abstract:The axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is used to derive mass formulas for neutral pseudoscalar mesons. Flavor symmetry breaking entails nonideal flavor content for these states. Adding that the eta(') is not a Goldstone mode, exact chiral-limit relations are developed from the identity. They connect the dressed-quark propagator to the topological susceptibility. It is confirmed that in the chiral limit the eta(') mass is proportional to the matrix element which connects this state to the vacuum via the topological susceptibility. The implications of the mass formulas are illustrated using an elementary dynamical model, which includes an Ansatz for that part of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel related to the non-Abelian anomaly. In addition to the current-quark masses, the model involves two parameters, one of which is a mass-scale. It is employed in an analysis of pseudoscalar- and vector-meson bound-states. While the effects of SU(N-f = 2) and SU(N-f = 3) flavor symmetry breaking are emphasized, the five-flavor spectra are described. Despite its simplicity, the model is elucidative and phenomenologically efficacious; e.g., it predicts eta-eta(') mixing angles of similar to -15(degrees) and pi(0)-eta angles of similar to 1(degrees).
Persisting roughness when deposition stops

Abstract:Useful theories for growth of surfaces under random deposition of material have been developed by several authors. The simplest theory is that introduced by Edwards and Wilkinson (EW), which is linear and soluble. Its non linear generalization by Kardar, Parisi and Zhang (KPZ), resulted in many subsequent studies. Yet both theories EW and KPZ contain an unphysical feature. When deposition of material is stopped both theories predict that as time tends to infinity, the surface becomes flat. In fact, of course, the final surface is not flat, but simply has no gradients larger than the gradient related to the angle of repose. We modify the EW and KPZ to accommodate this feature and study the consequences for the simpler system which is a modification of the EW equation. In spite of the fact that the equation describing the evolution of the surface is not linear, we find that the steady state in the presence of noise is not very different in the long wave length limit from that of the linear EW. The situation is quite different from that of EW when deposition stops. Initially there is still some rearrangement of the surface but that stops as everywhere on the surface the gradient is less than that related to the angle of repose. The most interesting feature observed after deposition stops is the emergence of history-dependent steady state distributions.

Abstract:Selection rules arising from accidental or broken symmetries may be sufficiently obscure that their agency is hidden, leading to the appearance of "magic zeroes" -- quantities that are suppressed without apparent recourse to a symmetry explanation. Magic zeroes and their corresponding hidden symmetries may shed new light on parametric hierarchies in the Standard Model and beyond. We identify the hidden symmetry responsible for a recently-discovered magic zero, the vanishing of the putative leading contribution to the anomalous dipole moments of the muon upon integrating out weak doublet and singlet vector-like fermions. Some of the tools involved -- spurion analysis leveraging discrete symmetries of the free theory, field redefinitions, spectator fields, and non-supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems -- may prove useful in the hunt for new magic zeroes and their hidden symmetries.

Abstract:We consider the quantum field theory of a model of an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type with a QCD based nonlocal fermion current-current interaction which has global SU(Nc) symmetry. We obtain an exact bosonization of this model in four Euclidean dimensions using auxiliary bilocal fields and discuss the dynamical breakdown of chiral symmetry in the massless fermion limit. A local field bosonization is obtained by decomposing the bilocal fields in terms of complete orthonormal sets of functions with the expansion coefficients, which are local functions, identified as the local meson fields. Retaining the ground state pseudoscalar, vector and pseudovector local fields we obtain a local effective action for this sector of the theory. The derivative expansion of the fermionic determinant necessary to obtain this local action is self-regularizing because of the bilocal substructure present in the model which is manifest in the form factors that are associated with the local fields. In our local action the value of each coefficient depends critically on the underlying fermionic dynamics through these form factors and the vacuum functions. As a consequence of this the vector and pseudovector fields in the theory are best interpreted as simple fermion-antifermion bound states rather than as massive Yang-Mills fields or exotic composites of the pseudoscalars; interpretations that we find are not in general admitted when models such as the GCM are treated correctly. Identifying then the physical vector and pseudovector fields with the linearly transforming chiral partners introduced by the bosonization, we obtain an effective action for this sector of the meson spectrum which predicts values for the kinematic and dynamic quantities associated with these fields.
Massive Yang-Mills for Vector and Axial-Vector Spectral Functions at Finite Temperature

Abstract:The hadronic mechanism which leads to chiral symmetry restoration is explored in the context of the rho-pi-a_1 system using Massive Yang-Mills, a hadronic effective theory which governs their microscopic interactions. In this approach, vector and axial-vector mesons are implemented as gauge bosons of a local chiral gauge group. We have previously shown that this model can describe the experimentally measured vector and axial-vector spectral functions in vacuum. Here, we carry the analysis to finite temperatures by evaluating medium effects in a pion gas and calculating thermal spectral functions. We find that the spectral peaks in both channels broaden along with a noticeable downward mass shift in the a_1 spectral peak and negligible movement of the rho peak. The approach toward spectral function degeneracy is accompanied by a reduction of chiral order parameters, i.e., the pion decay constant and scalar condensate. Our findings suggest a mechanism where the chiral mass splitting induced in vacuum is burned off. We explore this mechanism and identify future investigations which can further test it.

Abstract:A theory containing both electric and magnetic charges is formulated using two vector potentials, $A_{\mu}$ and $C_{\mu}$. This has the aesthetic advantage of treating electric and magnetic charges both as gauge charges, but it has the experimental disadvantage of introducing a second massless gauge boson (the ``magnetic'' photon) which is not observed. This problem is dealt with by using the Higgs mechanism to give a mass to one of the gauge bosons while the other remains massless. This effectively ``hides'' the magnetic charge, and the symmetry associated with it, when one is at an energy scale far enough removed from the scale of the symmetry breaking.

Abstract:We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element ρ00 for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate ρ00 for φ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and spacetime variables. We argue that the main contribution to ρ00 at lower energies should be from the φ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the φ meson wave function between the φ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to ρ00 are all in squares of fields that are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in spacetime. Vector-like symmetries and parity conservation in gauge theories with Yukawa couplings

Abstract:Non-perturbative results in QCD-like theories can be derived employing positivity of the Euclidean path integral measure, as pioneered by Weingarten, Vafa, Witten. We show that positivity of the measure can be generalized to parity-invariant theories with Yukawa couplings to fundamental scalars, provided the fermions are Dirac and carry a real representation of the gauge group. This result allows us to demonstrate the conservation of parity and vector-like flavor symmetries in such theories, as well as to derive exact inequalities among hadrons' masses.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving approach to the two valence-body continuum bound-state problem is used to calculate the elastic electromagnetic form factors of the $\rho$-meson and subsequently to study the evolution of vector-meson form factors with current-quark mass. To facilitate a range of additional comparisons, $K^\ast$ form factors are also computed. The analysis reveals that: vector mesons are larger than pseudoscalar mesons; composite vector mesons are non-spherical, with magnetic and quadrupole moments that deviate $\sim 30$\% from point-particle values; in many ways, vector-meson properties are as much influenced by emergent mass as those of pseudoscalars; and vector meson electric form factors possess a zero at spacelike momentum transfer. Qualitative similarities between the electric form factors of the $\rho$ and the proton, $G_E^p$, are used to argue that the character of emergent mass in the Standard Model can force a zero in $G_E^p$. Morover, the existence of a zero in vector meson electric form factors entails that a single-pole vector meson dominance model can only be of limited use in estimating properties of off-shell vector mesons, providing poor guidance for systems in which the Higgs-mechanism of mass generation is dominant.

Abstract:We elaborate on the brane configuration that gives rise to a QCD-like gauge theory that confines at low energies and becomes scale invariant at the highest energies. In the limit where the rank of the gauge group is large, a gravitational description emerges. For the confined phase, we obtain a vector meson spectrum and demonstrate how certain choice of parameters can lead to quantitative agreement with empirical data.

Symmetries of Nonrelativistic Phase Space and the Structure of Quark-Lepton Generation

Abstract:According to the Hamiltonian formalism, nonrelativistic phase space may be considered as an arena of physics, with momentum and position treated as independent variables. Invariance of x^2+p^2 constitutes then a natural generalization of ordinary rotational invariance. We consider Dirac-like linearization of this form, with position and momentum satisfying standard commutation relations. This leads to the identification of a quantum-level structure from which some phase space properties might emerge. Genuine rotations and reflections in phase space are tied to the existence of new quantum numbers, unrelated to ordinary 3D space. Their properties allow their identification with the internal quantum numbers characterising the structure of a single quark-lepton generation in the Standard Model. In particular, the algebraic structure of the Harari-Shupe preon model of fundamental particles is reproduced exactly and without invoking any subparticles. Analysis of the Clifford algebra of nonrelativistic phase space singles out an element which might be associated with the concept of lepton mass. This element is transformed into a corresponding element for a single coloured quark, leading to a generalization of the concept of mass and a different starting point for the discussion of quark unobservability.
