Abstract:In modern radiology, protecting medical images from intentional or unintentional change is a major concern. Personalized medicine and treatments are the future of medicine, which attempts to offer the appropriate treatment to the right patient at the right time. Medical imaging is essential to nearly every part of personalized medicine. Medical images are transferred through networks in teleradiology for clinical interpretation. This remote image transmission raises legal and ethical concerns such as fraud, privacy, malpractice liability, etc. With today's image processing software, medical images can be easily manipulated. Watermarking and other security methods have been suggested to protect medical image integrity as a way to improve security. The objective of this chapter is to provide comprehensive information about watermarking, its requirements, security, and threats related to watermarking. This chapter also provides a general architecture of a watermarking system that could be applied to all schemes available. The work primarily focuses on medical image watermarking. It presents various techniques, requirements, and applications of medical image watermarking. It also includes two case studies related to medical image watermarking to explain the importance and applicability of watermarking in the medical domain. Watermarking can protect patients' personal information during telemedicine data transmission. Watermarking in healthcare systems can be used as a means of protecting medical data, as well as for exchanging and processing medical images securely.
