Abstract:Functional hydrogels own superior advantages in wastewater purification thanks to their abundant functional groups and porous structure. However, the hydrogels cannot be used as stable adsorbents due to their insufficient mechanical properties and exorbitant swelling ratio. Inspired by the strong mechanical properties of the reinforced-concrete structure, the novel reinforced-concrete structured hydrogel microspheres were prepared, and the structure endowed the hydrogel with superior mechanical properties (the compressive stress was 27.4 MPa with a strain of 80%) and restricted swelling ratio (the water uptake was less than 2.2 g/g under pH = 7) but caused no obviously negative effect on the originally outstanding adsorption ability. The adsorption column filled with the concrete-structured hydrogel microspheres reached stable and efficient removal of the cationic dyes and heavy metal salts (1246 mg/g for MB, 491 mg/g for MV, 1253 mg/g for Cu(II), 564 mg/g for Ni(II), 640 mg/g for Cd(II), and 252 mg/g for Pb(II)). These results indicated that the microspheres were qualified for the work as stable and efficient adsorbents and, more importantly, the reinforced-concrete structure might accelerate the actual application of the hydrogels in diverse fields to a great extent.

Abstract:Super adsorbents with ultrahigh adsorption capabilities are highly desired for efficient wastewater remediation. However, most of the adsorbents with high adsorption capabilities are powdery adsorbents, showing inescapable limitations in practical adsorption column application. It is practically urgent to develop a simple and effective method for preparing adsorbents with ultrahigh adsorption capability and convenient column operation ability. Herein, inspired by oviparity, we fabricate super-adsorbent hydrogel spheres (SAHSs) based on self-sacrificing micro-reactors, which achieve the interior cross-linking polymerization of the hydrogel network and subsequent self-disintegration within only 150 seconds. The as-prepared poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propanesulfonic acid-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel spheres show outstanding adsorption capabilities toward organic dyes (4625 +/- 231 mg g(-1) for methylene blue) and heavy metallic ions (4312 +/- 185 mg g(-1) for Pb(ii)). Remarkably, the adsorption column packed with the SAHSs exhibits splendid removal abilities for organic dyes, which can purify 6280 mL of dye-containing wastewater (150 mu mol L-1) thoroughly using only 7 mL SAHSs. This is the first time that a maximum dynamic removal capacity over 50 g L-1 spheres has been obtained using an adsorption column. In addition, the hydrogel spheres also show good recyclability, dynamic filtration-regeneration, selective adsorption and smart separation-regeneration. Thus, the oviparity-inspired method to fabricate super-adsorbent hydrogel spheres has great potential to be used in efficient, economical and environmental wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Biodegradable macroporous hydrogels were prepared using a biodegradable crosslinker based on chitosan derivatives. The chitosan crosslinker was synthesized through the amidating reaction of amino groups in the chitosan oligosaccharide (CSO) chains and carboxyl groups in acrylic acid (AA) under the catalysis of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimidehydro-chloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The amidating reaction is able to provide polymerizable carbon-carbon double bonds for CSO. The chemical structure of the resulting compound chitosan oligosaccharide-graft-acrylic acid (CSO-g-AA) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) spectroscopy. The content of double bonds was measured by titration analysis. The measurement showed a grafting ratio of AA on CSO of about 3.5% (on average two acryoyl groups per CSO-g-AA chain) when the applied molar ratio of AA to CSO was 1.0. Polyacrylamide (PAM) cryogels were synthesized by the free radical polymerization of acrylamide using a modified freezing polymerization method crosslinked by CSO-g-AA. The obtained cryogels were macroporous hydrogels which could be degraded into solutions of linear polymer chains when treated with appropriate enzymes. Then we used snailase as a model enzyme to study the biodegradation process. The degradation was monitored by morphological studies using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), mechanical strength, and swelling ratio. The duration of the degradation process was adjustable from one month to two months when using different concentrations of snailase solutions.

Abstract:Supermacroporous hydrogels have attracted wide concern due to their comfort and breathability in wearable health-monitoring applications. Size controllable supermacroporous structure and excellent mechanical properties are the most important for its application. However, they are normally fabricated by the cryogelation method, which is difficult to control pore size and maintain flexibility. Here, yeast fermentation-inspired gelatin hydrogels with a controllable supermacroporous structure and excellent mechanical properties were fabricated for the first time. The pore size can be controlled by adjusting the content of glucose and yeast, the ratio of glucose to yeast, fermentation time, and gelatin content during fermentation. The hydrogels demonstrated a controllable pore size range from 100 to 400 μm and rapid swelling characteristics. The mechanical properties were maintained by soaking ammonium sulfate solution for 12 h, showing maximum tensile and compressive strains over 300 and 99%, respectively. This novel approach can be easily applied to the preparation of supermacroporous and high ductility hydrogels under mild conditions. Furthermore, conductive hydrogels combined supermacroporous structures with conductive polyaniline and reduced oxidized graphene, and silver nanowires were prepared as wearable flexible sensors. The obtained sensors maintain well-distributed porosity, breathability, and mechanical flexibility, also showing excellent conductivity of 2.4 S m-1. Finally, the sensors were successfully applied to detect physiological signals and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:To optimize the synthetic process of microorganism inspired multistage porous hydrogel, the mathematical analysis strategies was applied to select the optimal experimental parameters. One-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) design was used to optimize the preparation process of yeast fermentation multistage porous hydrogels. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to determine the significant influencing factors, and the results revealed that the mass ratio of yeast to glucose (R yeast/glucose ), gelation temperature of yeast fermentation (T gelation ) and reaction time (t reaction ) had a significant influence on responses. Box-Behnken design (BBD) based response surface methodology (RSM) was used to design experiments and build the relationship between the input parameters and output responses. Ideal point method was used to transform a multi-objective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem. Artificial neural network (ANN) coupled genetic algorithm (GA) were employed to further optimize and predict the optimal preparation conditions of yeast fermentation multistage porous hydrogels. The results showed ANN coupled GA was a more effective tool in the modelling and optimization of the preparation of yeast fermentation multistage porous hydrogels. The optimized preparation conditions are R yeast/glucose 1.84, T gelation 25.00 °C, t reaction 239.97 min. These values are expected to give us the minimum density, the maximum swelling degree and compressive strength. The research content of this paper provides theoretical support and factual basis for process optimization with complex influencing factors.

Abstract:Hydrogel, recognized as a promising biomaterial for tissue engineering, possesses notable characteristics, including high water uptake, an interconnected porous structure, and excellent permeability. However, the intricate task of fabricating a hierarchically macro-micronanoporous structure, essential for providing adequate space for nutrient diffusion and cell growth within hydrogels, remains a formidable challenge. In response to these challenges, this study introduces a sustainable and straightforward three-dimensional (3D) foaming printing strategy to produce hierarchically macro-micronanoporous hydrogels (HPHs) without the utilization of porogens and post-etching process. This method entails the controlled generation of air bubbles within the hydrogels through the application of optimal mechanical stirring rates. Subsequent ultraviolet (UV) cross-linking serves to effectively stabilize the macropores within the HPHs. The resulting hierarchically macro-micronanoporous structures demonstrate a substantial improvement in the viability, adhesion, and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) when incubated with the hydrogels. These findings present a significant advancement in the fabrication of hierarchically macro-micronanoporous hydrogels, with potential applications in the fields of tissue engineering and organoid development.

Abstract:Firstly, a newly developed bacteria brans (BB) /poly (acrylic/acrylamide/2-acrlylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (AA/AM/AMPS) hydrogel was reported, which cross-linked by N, N'-methyl-enebisacrylamide in the presence of potassium persulfate as a free radical initiator. The BB, a waste after the cultivation of the edible fungus, is composite of lignin, cellulose and other carbohydrates, which are beneficial to enhance the water absorbency properties of the super-absorbent hydrogel. Secondly, the chemical structure and morphologies of the hydrogel were characterized by ourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results confirmed that superabsorbent comprised a coarse surface and the porous network structure with carboxylate, carboxamide and sulfate. Finally, the swelling behaviors of the BB/P (AA/AM/AMPS) hydrogel have been studied, achieving favourable water absorbency properties (589 g/g). The effect of swelling behaviors of the hydrogel on the pH value and the concentration of the salt solution were also studied. This work improves the swelling behaviors of the hydrogel. Importantly, it provides the way to devise the hydrogel with environmental compatibility and low-cost, which is useful in many potential applications, such as agriculture.

Abstract:Gelatin and sodium alginate (SA) are two important biological macromolecules, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility and gel-forming ability. However, traditional SA and gelatin hydrogel displays limited mass transport, low porosity, instability, and poor mechanical properties extremely restricted their therapeutic effect and application scenarios. Herein, microbial fermentation and synergistic toughening strategies were used for preparing macroporous and tough hydrogel. The study investigated the fermentation and toughening conditions of hydrogel. The hydrogel composed of CaCl 2 cross-linked physically network and EDC/NHS cross-linked covalently network, exhibiting significantly improved mechanical properties, and excellent recovery efficiency. In addition, the hydrogel has a hierarchical macroporous structure of 100–500 μm, demonstrating high porosity of 10 times, swelling rate of 1541.0 %, and high mass infiltration capability. Further, after Ag + treatment, the macroporous hydrogel dressing showed outstanding biocompatibility. Compared with non-porous hydrogel, the resulting macroporous hydrogel dressing displayed high antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It could effectively alleviate intracellular ROS formation induced by H 2 O 2. In vivo experiments indicated that it has significantly better effect than non-porous hydrogel in accelerating wound healing. The overall results suggest that the gelatin/SA-based macroporous and tough hydrogel proposed in this study holds excellent prospects for application in wound dressings.

Abstract:Macroporous hydrogel with self-floating properties shows promising applications in gastric drug delivery, water purification and air–liquid interface cell culture. Microfluidic bubble templating is an emerging routine to produce macroporous hydrogel. However, current methods are in lack of the control over the anisotropy and porosity. Here, we describe new developments for the buoyancy-assisted microfluidic fabrication of anisotropic hydrogel products by templating from bubbles formed using step emulsification. The step emulsification method generates bubbles with exceptional precision which enables convenient tailoring the internal porosity of the hydrogel particles. Further design over the device structure and the buoyancy during the drop formation produces irregular hydrogel products such as macroporous fibers and core/shell beads. The anisotropic hydrogel beads provide pressure-responsive swimming behaviors and controllable release of the carried cargos. They are proved to be competent as carriers for culture of bronchial epithelial cells on air–liquid interfaces.

Abstract:Water treatment faces significant challenges due to the increasing complexity of pollutants and the need for more efficient, sustainable treatment methods. However, current adsorbent materials often struggle with issues such as low adsorption capacity, slow kinetics, and poor reusability, limiting their practical application. In this study, we developed a novel hierarchical porous hybrid gel (HPHG) for water treatment to address the limitations of conventional adsorbents. The HPHG features a multi-level porous structure (from 48 ± 28 nm to 4385 ± 823 nm) that significantly enhances its porosity and specific surface area. We systematically investigated the relationship between the material's structure and its adsorption performance. Kinetic studies revealed a tendency towards a pseudo-second-order adsorption model, attributed to the material's unique structural features that facilitate rapid mass exchange channels inside HPHG and provide abundant active sites for pollutant adsorption. Reusability tests demonstrated that the material retained 85.4% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles, highlighting its potential for practical applications. This study provides valuable insights into structure-performance relationships in advanced water treatment materials, offering a promising approach for designing next-generation adsorbents with superior efficiency and sustainability.
An amphiphilic silicone-modified polysaccharide molecular hybrid with in situ forming of hierarchical superporous architecture upon swelling

Abstract:Most hydrogels face the challenge that extensive water uptake deteriorates their mechanical integrity, which restricts potential uses and, in some cases, reduces therapeutic performance in biomedical applications. Motivated by the concept that structural optimization was able to improve the mechanical properties whilst maintaining a high water uptake, in this work we designed a new type of strong network, i.e. PDMS-crosslinked-NOCC polymer networks (PMSC CAPNs), by esterification between cross-linked PDMS diol (bis(hydroxyalkyl) terminated polydimethylsiloxane, silicone) and NOCC (N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan). By manipulating the cross-linked density with PDMS, a hierarchical structure in which PDMS-rich microgels were randomly distributed within the underlying PMSC hydrogel could be tailored through the control of polymer-polymer and polymer-solvent interactions. Besides, the resulting hybrid hydrogel displayed an efficient self-foaming capability to create in situ a hierarchical superporous microarchitecture upon swelling. The swelling behavior accounted for by Flory-Rehner theory indicated that the PDMS macromonomeric crosslinker not only caused the development of a superporous microarchitecture under solvation effects but also escalated both strength and elasticity to the final hydrogel. A new swelling model based on spectroscopic examination of the PMSC CAPNs was successfully proposed, which nicely defined the unique structural transition of the hydrogel upon swelling. We also envision the potential development of such a hybrid hydrogel for advanced biomedical applications.

Abstract:Recently, smart hydrogels have attracted much attention for their abilities to respond to subtle changes in external and internal stimuli. Also, natural polysaccharide-based biomaterials are more appealing for their biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, limitations owing to their complex compositions and mechanisms, cumbersome synthetic routes, and single function call for a simple and effective strategy to develop novel multifunctional smart hydrogels. Herein, this developed work was achieved based on Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP), a kind of natural glucomannan with diverse bioactivities and biocompatibility, we fabricated a low-cost multifunctional hydrogel by oxidizing the catechol groups of carboxymethylated BSP(CBSP)-dopamine(DA) conjugate with adhesion, antioxidant, and pH-responsive properties. In this hydrogel system, CBSP as the backbone material, was negatively charged and conferred the hydrogel with pH sensitivity. The presence of catechol groups greatly enhanced the tissue adhesion and antioxidant capacities of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, the highly porous structure of hydrogel allowed berberine to be encapsulated and released to exhibit excellent and long-lasting antibacterial activity. In summary, the adhesion, antioxidant, pH-sensitive, and antibacterial multifunctional hydrogel showed massive potential in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogels that integrate stretchability, adhesion, self-healing, and antibacterial properties may find use in a variety of fields including electronic skin, wound dressings, and wearable devices; however, traditional hydrogels often exhibit short-term adhesiveness, poor mechanical properties, and a lack of antibacterial activity. Herein, a plant-inspired polyacrylamide-soybean protein isolate-pyrogallol/borax (PAM-SPI-P/B) hydrogel has been developed using a facile green method based on dynamic coordination cross-linking between pyrogallol (PG) and borax. The PG-borax dynamic bonds adjusted the network structure of the hydrogels to provide greater structural integrity to the PAM-SPI double network. This hydrogel possessed a high mechanical strength (large elongation up to 760% and compressive strength up to 1.25 MPa at 80% strain), low swelling ratio, and self-healing properties. Inspired by natural polyphenols that contain adhesive molecules, the addition of pyrogallol provided the hydrogel excellent adhesion to various hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates. And with the inhibition of pyrogallol autoxidation due to the borax protection, the hydrogel showed repeatable and durable adhesion over 20 cycles. The obtained hydrogels also exhibited good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus because they were based on pyrogallol and borax, which have antibacterial properties. Accordingly, we envision that the PAM-SPI-P/B hydrogels have great potential for use in biomimetic tissues and biosensors.

Abstract:We report a series of sponge-like hydrogels prepared by polymerizing an aqueous solution of methacrylic acid (MAAc) in the presence of N,N,N',N'- tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), which results in hydrogen bond complexation, microphase separation, and formation of a unique colloidal network. The microstructure of the gels is determined by the coupling of microphase separation and gelation, which are influenced by the feeding concentrations of MAAc and TMEDA. Colloidal gels are only obtained at a relatively low concentration of MAAc in the presence of a certain amount of TMEDA. The structural evolution during the polymerization and the formation mechanism for the colloidal network are revealed by a combination of dynamic light scattering measurements and optical microscopy. It reveals that hydrogen bond complexes are formed between poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAAc) and TMEDA, leading to the formation of colloidal particles that assemble into clusters and then the interconnected colloidal network. The physical hydrogels with a colloidal network are stable in water and possess high stretchability and good selfrecovery ability due to the robustness of colloidal particles joined by adhesive PMAAc chains. These sponge-like hydrogels are applied to remove dye molecules for water purification and devised into a solar vapor generation device to produce clean water. The strategy by harnessing reaction-induced phase separation should be applicable for other systems to engineering the microstructure and properties of functional materials toward specific applications.
Robust Multiscale-Oriented Thermoresponsive Fibrous Hydrogels with Rapid Self-Recovery and Ultrafast Response Underwater

Abstract:Hydrogels with ultrafast response to environmental stimuli, possessing robust structural integrity and rapid self-recovery, have been considered as promising platforms for numerous applications, for example, in biomimetic materials and nanomedicine. Inspired by the bundled fibrous structure of actin, we developed a robust and ultrafast thermoresponsive fibrous hydrogel (TFH) by fully utilizing the weak noncovalent bonds and strong covalently cross-linked semiflexible electrospun fibrous nets. The TFH exhibits an ultrafast response (within 10 s), rapid self-recovery rate (74% within 10 s), tunable tensile strength (3-380 kPa), and high toughness (similar to 1560 J/m(2)) toward temperature. A multiscale orientation is considered to play a key role in the excellent mechanical properties at the fibrous mesh, fiber, and molecular scales. Furthermore, to take advantage of this TFH adequately, a novel kind of noodle-like hydrogel for thermo-controlled protein sorption based on the TFH is prepared, which exhibits high stability and ultrafast sorption properties. The bioinspired platforms hold promise as artificial skins and "smart" sorption membrane carriers, which provide a unique bioactive environment for tissue engineering and nanomedicine.

Abstract:Herein, the dual thermo/pH-responsive hydrogels were successfully fabricated by grafting poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) segments onto polyvinyl alcohol formaldehyde (PVF) sponges. Due to the interconnected micron-sized pore structure and high porosity (~ 85.0%), the PVF-g-PDMAEMA hydrogels can reach saturated water absorption within 60–180 min, of which 90% of water absorption capacity can be achieved within 20-60 min, showing a much faster water absorption rate than traditional PDMAEMA hydrogels without pores. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit obvious pH-responsiveness and weak thermo-sensitivity through evaluating the absorption capacities in buffers or water with the alternation of pH value or temperature by a mass method. Besides, the hydrogels show excellent repeated absorption performance by detecting absorption capacities in the absorption-extrusion tests for 10 cycles. In addition, the main water loss of hydrogels occurs within 360 min when they are transferred from pH 2 buffer to pH 12 buffer. The absorption capacity of hydrogels shows a significant fluctuation when the pH value of buffer fluctuates between 2 and 12, indicating an outstanding swelling-deswelling responsive reversibility. Furthermore, the hydrogels display excellent antibacterial activities against gram-negative (E. coli) and gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria and may be applied in multifunctional field as stimuli-responsive and antibacterial materials.

Abstract:Antibacterial hydrogels have the effects of creating a moist and cool environment for wound healing and decreasing infection of microbes, along with providing high water vapor permeability. Based on the functions of antibacterial hydrogels, macroporous PVF-g-PDMC cationic hydrogels, as one form of these hydrogels, were successfully synthesized via redox initiated [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) grafting onto polyvinyl alcohol-formaldehyde (PVF) sponges. The interconnected pore channels of the as-prepared hydrogels, with a macroporous structure and high porosity of around 90%, conferred the hydrogels with remarkable water absorption capacity of up to 20 g g(-1), achieved in ten seconds. Notably, the as-prepared hydrogels can kill Gram-negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria significantly, with a reduction of six orders of magnitude compared with the high initial concentration of bacteria (10(8) CFU mL(-1)), which indicates their excellent antibacterial properties. Moreover, the hemolysis and cytocompatibility studies confirmed the safety and biocompatibility of the hydrogels. Besides this, these PVF-based hydrogels also displayed prominent mechanical properties and their cyclic stress-strain curves demonstrate their good reusability. Considering their high porosity and extraordinary water absorption capacity of up to 20 g g(-1) in ten seconds, antibacterial properties, low hemolysis rates and good cytocompatibility, prominent mechanical properties and good reusability, PVF-g-PDMC hydrogels are promising candidates as desirable antibacterial materials related to biomedical materials.
