Abstract:Although the oscillator strength sum rule forbids the phase transition in ideal non-interacting two-level atoms systems, we present the possibility of the quantum phase transition in the coupled two-level atoms in a cavity. The system undergoes the superradiant phase transition in the thermodynamics limit and this transition is account for the atom-atom attractive interaction, exhibiting a violation of the sum rule. The bosonic coherent state technique has been adopted to locate the quantum critical point accurately in the finite-size system. We predict the existence of the superadiant phase transition as the number of atoms increases, satisfying all the constraints imposed by the sum rule.

Abstract:The system of a two-level atom interacting with a quantized radiation field in a gravitational field is studied by making use of a dynamical algebraic method. A full quantum treatment of the internal and external dynamics of the atom is given and an exact expression for the time evolution operator of the system is obtained. The influence of the gravitational field on the collapses and revivals of the atomic population, sub-Poissonian statistics, radiation force, atomic momentum diffusion, and squeezing of the radiation field is also investigated.

Abstract:The dipole-coupled two-level atoms (qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity are studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerical solution is presented. The first-order quantum phase transitions may occur in finite systems, in contrast to the original Dicke model. This system also exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase, as in the original Dicke model. Finite-size scaling for several observables-such as average fidelity susceptibility, order parameter, and concurrence-is performed for different interatomic interactions. The scaling exponents obtained suggest that interatomic interactions do not change the universality class.

Abstract:The system of a three-level atom in the Xi configuration coupled to two quantized field modes with arbitrary detuning and density-dependent multiphoton interaction is studied by dynamical algebraic method. With the help of an su(3) algebraic structure, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian by making use of unitary transformations and obtain the eigenvalues, eigenstates and time evolution operator for the system. Based on this su(3) structure, we also show that the system of a three-level atom in the Xi configuration can be exactly transformed to an effective two-level Hamiltonian by an unitary transformation. Finally, we show that there exist an su(N) algebraic structure in the system of a N-level atom interacting with N-1 field modes.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement of a three-level atom in Λ configuration interacting with two quantized field modes by using logarithmic negativity. Then, we study the relationship of the atomic coherence and the entanglement between two fields which are initially prepared in vacuum or thermal states. We find that if the two fields are prepared in thermal states,the atomic coherence can induce the entanglement between two thermal fields. However, there is no coherence-induced entanglement between two vacuum fields.

Abstract: We investigate the influence of the additional third level on the dynamic evolution of a Two-Level system interacting with a coherent field in the strong coupling regime where Rotating Wave Approximation is not valid. We find that the additional level has great influence on the evolution of the system population. Our results show that the Two-Level model is not a good approximation in this strong light-matter coupling regime. We further investigate the parameter space where the Two-Level model can still be justified.

Abstract:We have studied the effects of the fine structure of energy levels on the dynamics of the atom and light field. A significant influence is exhibited in the collapse-revival behavior of atomic inversion, the light squeezing, the phase of the field, and the antibunching of a light beam. When the energy difference between the doublet is large (Delta greater than or equal to 20g, where g is the coupling constant), the dynamics of the atomic inversion becomes identical to that of the usual Jaynes-Cummings model, as expected. However, the fine-structure effects on the phase and the antibunching of the light field exist in a much larger range. In particular, for a strong field, the normally ordered variance of the photon-number operator exhibits complicated collapse and revival patterns and the light displays strong antibunching in each revival envelope. Numerical calculations also show that this model does not produce significant squeezing due to the influence of the fine structure.

Abstract:We consider N identical two-level atoms coupled to an optical cavity, which is coherently driven by an external field. In the limit of small atomic excitation, the reflection and transmission coefficients for both fields and intensities are calculated analytically. In addition, the frequency content of the cavity field and hence also the emission spectrum of the cavity is determined. It is discussed in particular how individual collisional dephasing and common atomic energy-level fluctuations prevent the cavity field from being in a coherent state, which in turn affects the outgoing fields.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of acceleration and boundaries on the resonance interaction between two identical two-level entangled atoms in synchronous circular motions mediated by a fluctuating massless quantum scalar field. In the ultra-relativistic limit, we give the analytical results of the resonance interaction energy either in the absence or in the presence of a reflecting plane boundary. Our results indicate that the interatomic resonance interaction energy depends on the atomic intrinsic energy level spacing, the atomic acceleration, the interatomic separation, and the distance of the atoms from the boundary. By adjusting these parameters, the resonance interatomic force can be either enhanced or weakened and even its direction can be altered as compared with the case of two inertial entangled atoms in an unbounded Minkowski spacetime. Our work clearly suggests that the resonance interatomic interaction can be regulated and controlled significantly by changing the atomic motion state and the field's boundary condition.

Abstract:The dynamics of an atom of three levels in configuration interacting with a quantized field of two modes in a cavity is studied within the rotating wave approximation by considering experimental values of accessible hyperfine levels of alkali atoms. The Hamiltonian model is constructed on the basis of the direct product of the atomic states with Fock states of light. This simplified basis allows us to generalize the state of light to any quantum field. The interaction term of the Hamiltonian restricts the system to a 3D Hilbert space. The system's time evolution results show some similarities with the effective two-level system, such as the presence of collapses and revivals and the atom-field entanglement. By an analysis of the statistics of the photons, we show that when the three-level atom is interacting with a coherent field of two modes, it is possible to control experimentally the statistics of the field to be super-Poissonian or sub-Poissonian by the choice of the initial atomic state.

Abstract:We develop a system consisting of a quantum kicked rotor with an additional degree of freedom. This models a single two-level atom with internal ground and excited states, and it is characterized by its quantum resonances with ballistic spreading and by the entanglement between the internal and momentum degrees of freedom. These behaviors establish an equivalence between our model and the usual quantum walk on the line.

Abstract:The interaction of a four-level atom consisting of one excited state, two upper levels and one ground state with two coherent fields is considered. We use one field to drive the transition between the excited state and the ground state, and simultaneously apply another field to couple the ground state to the upper-level doublet. We find that when the dipole moments between the upper doublet and the ground state are parallel the central Linewidth of resonance fluorescence spectrum of the driven transition can be much narrower than both the linewidth of spontaneous emission of the excited state and of the upper doublet due to quantum interference between two decay pathways from the upper levels to the ground state of the atom.
Local-field excitations in 2D lattices of resonant atoms

Abstract:We study excitations of the local field (locsitons) in nanoscale two-dimensional (2D) lattices of strongly interacting resonant atoms and various unusual effects associated with them. Locsitons in low-dimensional systems and the resulting spatial strata and more complex patterns on a scale of just a few atoms were predicted by us earlier [A. E. Kaplan and S. N. Volkov, Phys. Rev. Lett., v. 101, 133902 (2008)]. These effects present a radical departure from the classical Lorentz-Lorenz theory of the local field (LF), which assumes that the LF is virtually uniform on this scale. We demonstrate that the strata and patterns in the 2D lattices may be described as an interference of plane-wave locsitons, build an analytic model for such unbounded locsitons, and derive and analyze dispersion relations for the locsitons in an equilateral triangular lattice. We draw useful analogies between one-dimensional and 2D locsitons, but also show that the 2D case enables locsitons with the most diverse and unusual properties. Using the nearest-neighbor approximation, we find the locsiton frequency band for different mutual orientations of the lattice and the incident field. We demonstrate a formation of distinct vector locsiton patterns consisting of multiple vortices in the LF distribution and suggest a way to design finite 2D lattices that exhibit such patterns at certain frequencies. We illustrate the role of lattice defects in supporting localized locsitons and also demonstrate the existence of "magic shapes", for which the LF suppression at the exact atomic resonance is cancelled.

Abstract:The influence of the atomic hyperfine structure on the dynamics of a single two-level atom in laser field has been studied in this paper. A simplified model was built up. With this model, some calculations were carried out. We draw a conclusion that there exists an optimal laser frequency when the maximal average probability on the upper energy level is required. The laser intensity has little influence on the probability that the atom stays on a certain energy level.

Abstract:Electronic resonances are states that are unstable towards loss of electrons. They play critical roles in high-energy environments across chemistry, physics, and biology but are also relevant to processes under ambient conditions that involve unbound electrons. This feature article focuses on complex-variable techniques such as complex scaling and complex absorbing potentials that afford a treatment of electronic resonances in terms of discrete square-integrable eigenstates of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with complex energy. Fundamental aspects of these techniques as well their integration into molecular electronic-structure theory are discussed and an overview of some recent developments is given: analytic gradient theory for electronic resonances, the application of rank-reduction techniques and quantum embedding to them, as well as approaches for evaluating partial decay widths.

Abstract:Fermionic superfluidity in atomic Fermi gases across a Feshbach resonance is normally described by the atom-molecule theory, which treats the closed channel as a noninteracting point boson. In this work we present a theoretical description of the resonant superfluidity in analogy to the two-band superconductors. We employ the underlying two-channel scattering model of Feshbach resonance where the closed channel is treated as a composite boson with binding energy epsilon(0) and the resonance is triggered by the microscopic interchannel coupling U-12. The binding energy epsilon(0) naturally serves as an energy scale of the system, which has been sent to infinity in the atom-molecule theory. We show that the atom-molecule theory can be viewed as a leading-order low-energy effective theory of the underlying fermionic theory in the limit epsilon(0) -> infinity and U-12 -> 0, while keeping the phenomenological atom-molecule coupling finite. The resulting two-band description of the superfluid state is in analogy to the BCS theory of two-band superconductors. In the dilute limit epsilon(0) -> infinity, the two-band description recovers precisely the atom-molecule theory. The two-band theory provides a natural approach to study the corrections because of a finite binding energy epsilon(0) in realistic experimental systems. For broad and moderate resonances, the correction is not important for current experimental densities. However, for extremely narrow resonance, we find that the correction becomes significant. The finite binding energy correction could be important for the stability of homogeneous polarized superfluid against phase separation in imbalanced Fermi gases across a narrow Feshbach resonance.
