Abstract:Despite advances in medical care, many visual conditions remain incurable, and they cannot be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses. Therefore, people living with these visual impairments must learn to live with their condition by developing strategies to use their residual vision. 1 Based on 2019 estimates in Canada, 738,400 people are living with mild visual impairment, 417,600 with moderate visual impairment, and 49,500 with legal blindness. 2 Numerous common ocular pathologies, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy, cause mild to moderate visual impairment, which can make it difficult to perform basic daily activities, such as reading medical information, using a smartphone, or crossing a busy street, even with the best optical correction. Daily problems such as these often require individuals to seek additional assistance from caregivers and/or public services. 3 Thus, mild to moderate visual impairments represent a major public health problem, having not only an individual impact but also a collective one because of its repercussions on economic growth and the health care system. 4–6
