Abstract:The application of adaptive support vector regression (SVR) models in tunnel reliability analysis is limited. A two-stage adaptive SVR-based metamodel is proposed for tunnel reliability estimation, addressing efficiency and accuracy by ensuring the selection of samples in the most critical region. The new training samples are selected from a reduced space built from the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) population with small limit state function values having maximum chances of misclassification. The adjacent samples are excluded based on the Euclidian distance to avoid clustering. The second step chooses the data point from the reduced space with the maximum joint probability distribution value as the training data to add to the prevailing training data. The SVR model is updated accordingly to rebuild the reduced space. The iteration is continued until the coefficient of variation of the estimated failure probability is significantly less and no data is left in the reduced space. Otherwise, the MCS population is augmented by additional samples for further iterations. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by considering two underground tunnel reliability problems. The reliability estimates by the proposed approach with fewer training data are very close to those obtained by the direct MCS technique.
