Abstract:The study of state transformations under local operations and classical communication (LOCC) plays a crucial role in entanglement theory. While this has been long ago characterized for pure bipartite states, the situation is drastically different for systems of more parties: generic pure qudit states cannot be obtained from nor transformed to any state (i.e., they are isolated), which contains a different amount of entanglement. We consider here the question of LOCC convertibility for permutation-symmetric pure states of an arbitrary number of parties and local dimension, a class of clear interest both for physical and mathematical reasons and for which the aforementioned result does not apply given that it is a zero-measure subset in the state space. While it turns out that generic $n$-qubit symmetric states are also isolated, we consider particular families for which we can determine to be, on the contrary, endowed with a rich local stabilizer, a necessary requirement for LOCC convertibility to be possible. This allows us to identify classes in which LOCC transformations among permutation-symmetric states are possible. Notwithstanding, we provide several results that indicate severe obstructions to LOCC convertibility in general even within these highly symmetrical classes. In the course of the study of LOCC transformations, we also characterize the local symmetries of symmetric states.

Abstract:The study of state transformations by spatially separated parties with local operations assisted by classical communication (LOCC) plays a crucial role in entanglement theory and its applications in quantum information processing. Transformations of this type among pure bipartite states were characterized long ago and have a revealing theoretical structure. However, it turns out that generic fully entangled pure multipartite states cannot be obtained from nor transformed to any inequivalent fully entangled state under LOCC. States with this property are referred to as isolated. Nevertheless, the above result does not forbid the existence of particular SLOCC classes that are free of isolation, and therefore, display a rich structure regarding LOCC convertibility. In fact, it is known that the celebrated $n$-qubit GHZ and W states give particular examples of such classes and in this work, we investigate this question in general. One of our main results is to show that the SLOCC class of the 3-qutrit totally antisymmetric state is isolation-free as well. Actually, all states in this class can be converted to inequivalent states by LOCC protocols with just one round of classical communication (as in the GHZ and W cases). Thus, we consider next whether there are other classes with this property and we find a large set of negative answers. Indeed, we prove weak isolation (i.e., states that cannot be obtained with finite-round LOCC nor transformed by one-round LOCC) for very general classes, including all SLOCC families with compact stabilizers and many with non-compact stabilizers, such as the classes corresponding to the $n$-qunit totally antisymmetric states for $n\geq4$. Finally, given the pleasant feature found in the family corresponding to the 3-qutrit totally antisymmetric state, we explore in more detail the structure induced by LOCC and the entanglement properties within this class.

Abstract:Alice and Bob are given an unknown initial state chosen from a set of pure quantum states. Their task is to transform the initial state to a corresponding final pure state using local operations only. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of such a transformation. We also provide efficient algorithms that can quickly rule out the possibility of transforming a set of initial states to a set of final states.

Abstract:We develop the theory of local operations and classical communication (LOCC) for bipartite quantum systems represented by commuting von Neumann algebras. Our central result is the extension of Nielsen's Theorem to arbitrary factors. As in the matrix algebra case, the LOCC ordering of bipartite pure states is connected to the majorization of their restrictions. Our theorem implies that, in a bipartite system modeled by commuting factors in Haag duality, a) all states have infinite one-shot entanglement if and only if the local factors are not of type I, b) type III factors are characterized by LOCC transitions of arbitrary precision between any two pure states, and c) the latter holds even without classical communication for type III$_{1}$ factors. In the case of semifinite factors, the usual construction of entanglement monotones carries over using majorization theory. In the appendix, we provide a self-contained treatment of majorization on semifinite von Neumann algebras and $\sigma$-finite measure spaces.

Transformations in quantum networks via local operations assisted by finitely many rounds of classical communication

Abstract:Recent advances have led towards first prototypes of quantum networks in which entanglement is distributed by sources producing bipartite entangled states. This raises the question of which states can be generated in quantum networks based on bipartite sources using local operations and classical communication. In this work, we study state transformations under finite rounds of local operations and classical communication (LOCC) in networks based on maximally entangled two-qubit states. We first derive the symmetries for arbitrary network structures, as these determine which transformations are possible. Then, we show that contrary to tree graphs, for which it has already been shown that any state within the same entanglement class can be reached, there exist states which can be reached probabilistically but not deterministically if the network contains a cycle. Furthermore, we provide a systematic way to determine states which are not reachable in networks consisting of a cycle. Moreover, we provide a complete characterization of the states which can be reached in a cycle network with a protocol where each party measures only once, and each step of the protocol results in a deterministic transformation. Finally, we present an example which cannot be reached with such a simple protocol, and constitutes, up to our knowledge, the first example of a LOCC transformation among fully entangled states requiring three rounds of classical communication.

Abstract:Multipartite entanglement purification is revisited by using the Local operations and classical communications(LOCCs). We demonstrate our idea by considering the tripartite case, i.e. the purification of tripartite entanglement. We express the general tripartite entangled states in a special representation of total spin operators $J_{123}^{2}$ and $% J_{12}^{2}$ of tripartite system with eigenvalues 15/4 and 2 respectively. This basis is a \textit{genuine basis} because it consists of of all the genuine entangled states of tripartite system. Our protocol is a recurrence one, and only two copies of the initial mixed tripartite entangled states are needed in each round. It is shown that if the initial fidelity is larger than a threshold 0.4, the purification process will succeed.The yield of the current protocol is higher than the previous multipartite entanglement purification protocols. As a by-product, we can get a bipartite pure Bell state when the purification protocol fails for W state. Our protocol also shows that there may be some special kind of tripartite entanglement which belongs to neither W-type entanglement nor GHZ-type entanglement.

Abstract:We advance on the conversion of bipartite quantum states via local operations and classical communication for infinite-dimensional systems. We introduce δ-convertibility based on the observation that any pure state can be approximated by a state with finite-support Schmidt coefficients. We show that δ-convertibility of bipartite states is fully characterized by a majorization relation between the sequences of squared Schmidt coefficients, providing a novel extension of Nielsen's theorem for infinite-dimensional systems. Hence, our definition is equivalent to the one of ε-convertibility [Quantum Inf. Comput. extbf{8}, 0030 (2008)], but deals with states having finitely supported sequences of Schmidt coefficients. Additionally, we discuss the notions of optimal common resource and optimal common product in this scenario. The optimal common product always exists, whereas the optimal common resource depends on the existence of a common resource. This highlights a distinction between the resource-theoretic aspects of finite versus infinite-dimensional systems. Our results rely on the order-theoretic properties of majorization for infinite sequences, applicable beyond the LOCC convertibility problem.

Approximate and ensemble local entanglement transformations for multipartite states

Abstract:Understanding multipartite entanglement is a key goal in quantum information. Entanglement in pure states can be characterised by considering transformations under Local Operations assisted by Classical Communication (LOCC). However, it has been shown that, for $n\ge5$ parties, multipartite pure states are generically isolated, i.e., they can neither be reached nor transformed under LOCC. Nonetheless, in any real lab, one never deterministically transforms a pure initial state exactly to a pure target state. Instead, one transforms a mixed state near the initial state to an ensemble that is on average close to the target state. This motivates studying approximate LOCC transformations. After reviewing in detail the known results in the bipartite case, we present the gaps that remain open in the multipartite case. While the analysis of the multipartite setting is much more technically involved due to the existence of different SLOCC classes, certain features simplify in the approximate setting. In particular, we show that it is sufficient to consider pure initial states, that it is sufficient to consider LOCC protocols with finitely-many rounds of communication and that approximate transformations can be approximated by ensemble transformations within an SLOCC class. Then, we formally define a hierarchy of different forms of approximate transformations that are relevant from a physical point of view. Whereas this hierarchy collapses in the bipartite case, we show that this is not the case for the multipartite setting, which is fundamentally richer. To wit, we show that optimal multipartite approximate transformations are not generally deterministic, that ensemble transformations within an SLOCC class can achieve a higher fidelity than deterministic transformations within an SLOCC class, and that there are approximate transformations with no deterministic transformations nearby.

Probabilistic pure state conversion on the majorization lattice

Abstract:Entanglement is among the most fundamental-and at the same time puzzling-properties of quantum physics. Its modern description relies on a resource-theoretical approach, which treats entangled systems as a means to enable or accelerate certain informational tasks. Hence, it is of crucial importance to determine whether-and how-different entangled states can be converted into each other under free operations (those which do not create entanglement from nothing). Here, we show that the majorization lattice provides an efficient framework in order to characterize the allowed transformations of pure entangled states under local operations and classical communication. The underlying notions of meet $\land$ and join $\lor$ in the majorization lattice lead us to define, respectively, the optimal common resource and optimal common product states. Based on these two states, we introduce two optimal probabilistic protocols for the (single-copy) conversion of incomparable bipartite pure states, which we name greedy and thrifty. Both protocols reduce to Vidal's protocol [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1046 (1999)] if the initial and final states are comparable, but otherwise the thrifty protocol can be shown to be superior to the greedy protocol as it yields a more entangled residual state when it fails (they both yield the same entangled state with the same optimal probability when they succeed). Finally, we consider the generalization of these protocols to entanglement transformations involving multiple initial or final states.

Abstract:Entanglement plays an important role in quantum computation and information. We can only manipulate an entangled quantum state shared among several distant parties by local operations with classical communication ( LOCC). Thus, it is of great importance to characterize the conditions by which we can determine whether one pure quantum state can be transformed to another pure state by LOCC. It is well known that separable operations and LOCC are not equivalent. Dozens of results have illustrated this difference. Little do we know about this difference despite these recent results. It is shown in this paper that if the initial state vertical bar psi > and final state vertical bar phi > are genuine tripartite pure states in the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) class then vertical bar psi > can be transformed to vertical bar phi > by separable operations if and only if vertical bar psi > can be transformed to vertical bar phi > by deterministic LOCC. That is, SEP equals LOCC on tripartite GHZ states.

Abstract:Any deterministic bipartite entanglement transformation involving finite copies of pure states and carried out using local operations and classical communication (LOCC) results in a net loss of entanglement. We show that for almost all such transformations, partial recovery of lost entanglement is achievable by using $2 \times 2$ auxiliary entangled states, no matter how large the dimensions of the parent states are. For the rest of the special cases of deterministic LOCC transformations, we show that the dimension of the auxiliary entangled state depends on the presence of equalities in the majorization relations of the parent states. We show that genuine recovery is still possible using auxiliary states in dimensions less than that of the parent states for all patterns of majorization relations except only one special case.

Abstract:We develop the probabilistic implementation of a nonlocal gate exp [iξσnAσnB ] and ξ ∈ [0, π 4 ], by using a single non-maximally entangled state. We prove that, nonlocal gates can be implemented with a fidelity greater than 79.3% and a consumption of less than 0.969 ebits and 2 classical bits, when ξ ≤ 0.353. This provides a higher bound for the feasible operation compared to the former techniques [9, 14, 16]. Besides, gates with ξ ≥ 0.353 can be implemented with the probability 79.3% and a consumption of 0.969 ebits, which is the same efficiency as the distillation-based protocol [14, 16], while our method saves extra classical resource. Gates with ξ → 0 can be implemented with nearly unit probability and a small entanglement. We also generalize some application to the multiple system, where we find it is possible to implement certain nonlocal gates between many non-entangled partners using a non-maximally multiple entangled state.

Abstract:Recently using entanglement as resource to distinguish orthogonal product states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC) has been studied intensively. Zhang. et al. presented protocols to use entanglement to distinguish certain classes of orthogonal product states in $\mathbb{C}^m\otimes \mathbb{C}^n$\cite{Zhang016}. In this paper, we study local distinguishability of multipartite orthogonal product states and provide a practical solution. Our method relies upon a special class of locally indistinguishable multipartite product states introduced by Wang et. al. to build a protocol to distinguishes perfectly multipartitie quantum states by LOCC using an entangled state as a resource for implementing quantum measurements.

Local Unitary Equivalence of the SLOCC Class of Three Qubits

Abstract:Classification of multipartite pure states via the local unitary (LU) equivalence or the stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) equivalence is a fundamental task in investigating multipartite entanglement. It is shown in the seminal paper (2000 Phys. Rev. A 62 062314) that pure states of three qubits can be partitioned into six SLOCC classes. We explore here a necessary and sufficient condition for LU equivalence of pure states for any SLOCC class via Acín et al’s Schmidt coefficients (ASC) of three qubits in (2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 1560). We show that the LU equivalent states in W SLOCC class have the same ASC irrespective of phases while there are generally two different ASCs for the LU equivalent states in GHZ SLOCC class (irrespective of phases for some subclass). Consequently, we obtain a complete LU classification of three qubit pure states in the sense of ASC. Moreover, we discuss the choice among the different ASCs and then propose an approach to find a unique ASC for any given three qubit pure state. At last we analyse the entanglement/separability of the marginal states of the two inequivalent genuine entangled SLOCC classes. We find that any bipartite marginal states of the W SLOCC class are entangled, and that of the GHZ SLOCC class has eight different cases which are depend on the ASCs.
Multi-particle entanglement manipulation under positive partial transpose preserving operations

Abstract:We consider the transformation of multi-partite states in the single copy setting under positive-partial-transpose-preserving operations (PPT-operations) and obtain both qualitative and quantitative results. Firstly, for some pure state transformations that are impossible under local operations and classical communication (LOCC), we demonstrate that they become possible with a surprisingly large success probability under PPT-operations. Furthermore, we clarify the convertibility of arbitrary multipartite pure states under PPT-operations, and show that a drastic simplification in the classification of pure state entanglement occurs when the set of operations is switched from LOCC to PPT-operations. Indeed, the infinitely many types of LOCC-incomparable entanglement are reduced to only one type under the action of PPT-operations. This is a clear manifestation of the increased power afforded by the use of PPT-bound entanglement. In addition, we further enlarge the set of operations to clarify the effect of another type of bound entanglement, multipartite unlockable bound entanglement, and show that a further simplification occurs. As compared to pure states a more complicated situation emerges in the mixed state settings. While single copy distillation becomes possible under PPT-operations for some mixed states it remains impossible for other mixed states.

Abstract:We study the problem of transforming a tripartite pure state to a bipartite one using stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). It is known that the tripartite-to-bipartite SLOCC convertibility is characterized by the maximal Schmidt rank of the given tripartite state, i.e. the largest Schmidt rank over those bipartite states lying in the support of the reduced density operator. In this paper, we further study this problem and exhibit novel results in both multi-copy and asymptotic settings, utilizing powerful results from the structure of matrix spaces. In the multi-copy regime, we observe that the maximal Schmidt rank is strictly super-multiplicative, i.e. the maximal Schmidt rank of the tensor product of two tripartite pure states can be strictly larger than the product of their maximal Schmidt ranks. We then provide a full characterization of those tripartite states whose maximal Schmidt rank is strictly super-multiplicative when taking tensor product with itself. Notice that such tripartite states admit strict advantages in tripartite-to-bipartite SLOCC transformation when multiple copies are provided. In the asymptotic setting, we focus on determining the tripartite-to-bipartite SLOCC entanglement transformation rate. Computing this rate turns out to be equivalent to computing the asymptotic maximal Schmidt rank of the tripartite state, defined as the regularization of its maximal Schmidt rank. Despite the difficulty caused by the super-multiplicative property, we provide explicit formulas for evaluating the asymptotic maximal Schmidt ranks of two important families of tripartite pure states by resorting to certain results of the structure of matrix spaces, including the study of matrix semi-invariants. These formulas turn out to be powerful enough to give a sufficient and necessary condition to determine whether a given tripartite pure state can be transformed to the bipartite maximally entangled state under SLOCC, in the asymptotic setting. Applying the recent progress on the non-commutative rank problem, we can verify this condition in deterministic polynomial time.

Abstract:We show that the ability to create entanglement is necessary for execution of bipartite quantum gates even when they are applied to unentangled states and create no entanglement. Starting with a simple example we demonstrate that to execute such a gate bi-locally the local operations and classical communications (LOCC) should be supplemented by shared entanglement. Our results point to the changes in quantum discord, which is a measure of quantumness of correlations even in the absence of entanglement, as the indicator of failure of a LOCC implementation of the gates.

Asymptotic Compatibility between LOCC Conversion and Recovery

Abstract:Recently, entanglement concentration was explicitly shown to be irreversible. However, it is still not clear what kind of states can be reversibly converted in the asymptotic setting by LOCC when neither the initial nor the target state is maximally entangled. We derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the reversibility of LOCC conversions between two bipartite pure entangled states in the asymptotic setting. In addition, we show that conversion can be achieved perfectly with only local unitary operation under such condition except for special cases. Interestingly, our result implies that an error-free reversible conversion is asymptotically possible even between states whose copies can never be locally unitarily equivalent with any finite numbers of copies, although such a conversion is impossible in the finite setting. In fact, we show such an example. Moreover, we establish how to overcome the irreversibility of LOCC conversion in two ways. As for the first method, we evaluate how many copies of the initial state is to be lost to overcome the irreversibility of LOCC conversion. The second method is to add a supplementary state appropriately, which also works for LU conversion unlike the first method. Especially, for the qubit system, any non-maximally pure entangled state can be a universal resource for the asymptotic reversibility when copies of the state is sufficiently many. More interestingly, our analysis implies that far-from-maximally entangled states can be better than nearly maximally entangled states as this type of resource. This fact brings new insight to the resource theory of state conversion.
