Abstract:Objective To discusse the effect of fellow support system on nurses' job satisfaction and identifies the relationship between fellow support and nurses' job satisfaction. Method Quantitative data and qualitative data were collected: the former using Questionnaire survey that 120 nurse staff of Sir Run Shaw Hospital were randomly selected to finish questionnaires,the latter using a semi-structural interview with 60 nurse staff.The ground theory was used to analyze the qualitative data.Result Quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the total level of fellow support,including support from colleagues and nurse managers has significant positive correlation not only with the total level of nurses' job satisfaction.What's more,fellow support has significant positive correlation with nurses' career development,nurse managers,job itself and interpersonal relationship,but has little impact on satisfaction of salaries,rewards,benefits,work orders,or coworkers.Conclusion It may be an effective method to improve nurses' job satisfaction by fellow support.

Abstract:AIMS:This study aimed to evaluate the health-related quality of life of nursing workers and influential factors.BACKGROUND:Nursing workers are under great occupational stress. However, few population-level studies of nursing workers' health conditions have been reported from China.DESIGN:This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 12 medical institutions in east China between January and March 2015.METHODS:Social-demographic information, nursing workers' work-related information and health-related quality of life using the Chinese (mainland) version of the Short Form 36 health survey were collected by a self-administrated questionnaire.RESULTS:Nursing workers reported significantly lower scores of the vitality, mental health dimensions, and mental component summary of the Short Form 36 survey compared with general population reference values. They scored significantly higher for five other dimensions and comparably for the physical role dimension. Pre-job training, families' positive attitudes to their job, and good relationships with clients were positively related with nursing workers' mental well-being.CONCLUSION:To promote nursing workers' mental health, compulsory work-related training, voluntary psychological counselling, and targeted legislation are needed.
Psychological resilience and work engagement of Chinese nurses: a chain mediating model of career identity and quality of work life

Abstract:Aim: To investigate how nurses' psychological resilience affects their work engagement and the resulting pathways, namely, the intermediary effect of career identity and quality of work life. Background: Psychological resilience is the ability to adapt to new circumstances and overcome difficulties. Work engagement is a positive, perfect emotional and cognitive state in the work process, which has a positive effect on nurses' physical and mental health and career development. The importance of psychological resilience in nursing is growing in popularity. However, few studies have explored the relationship between psychological resilience and nurses' work engagement. Design: This is a cross-sectional study. Methods: From March to April 2023, 356 nurses in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University in China received valid questionnaires. The study was surveyed using the Connor-Davidson, Resilience Scale, the Nursing Career Identity Scale, the Work-Related Quality of Life Scale, and the 15-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Process version 3.5 plug-in SPSS 25 was used to test the mediating effect. Results: (1) Psychological resilience was significantly and positively correlated with career identity, quality of work life, and work engagement (r = 0.702-0.803, p < 0.001). (2) Career identity and quality of work life partially mediated the relationship between psychological resilience and work engagement, with effect sizes of 0.2382 and 0.0958, respectively. (3) There was a chain mediation model between psychological resilience and work engagement that had a value of 0.1219. Conclusion: Career identity and quality of work life played a chain-mediating role between psychological resilience and work engagement. Thus, in order to enhance the work engagement of clinical nurses, it is necessary for nursing managers to take measures to enhance not only psychological resilience but also their career identity and the quality of work life.
Moderating effect of work-related social support on the relationship between role conflicts and job satisfaction among female nurses pursuing a further degree in China.

Abstract:PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the moderating effect of work-related social support on the relationship between work-family-school role conflicts and job satisfaction among female registered nurses pursuing further degrees in China. METHODS The study had a cross-sectional correlational design. Convenience sampling was applied to recruit participants from eight hospitals in China from January to August 2017. SPSS software and the PROCESS macro were used to conduct the data analyses in the present study. RESULTS A total of 320 nurses were included in the present study. Work-family-school role conflicts were negatively correlated with job satisfaction (r = -0.21, P < 0.001). Work-related social support was a significant moderator (interaction effect: β = 0.22, P = 0.039) on the relationship between work-family-school role conflicts and job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS The study revealed that when nurses perceived that they received a low or moderate level of social support in the workplace that strengthened the relationship between work-family-school role conflicts and job satisfaction. Hospital administrators should implement school- and family-friendly policies that increase the social support provided to nurses pursuing further degrees to balance their responsibilities of work, family and school and to improve their job satisfaction.

Does abusive supervision lead nurses to suffer from workplace violence? A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to (1) assess the current status of Chinese nurses' exposure to workplace violence; (2) identify the cluster of interrelationships between abusive supervision, anxiety and depression symptoms, work ability, and workplace violence in nursing settings; and (3) clarify the functional mechanism among these variables. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted online from September to October 2020 in China. A total of 1,221 valid questionnaires were collected across 100 cities in 31 provinces. Results: Approximately 67.57% of participants experienced workplace violence in the past one year, in the types of verbal violence (59.71%), made difficulties (43.16%), mobbing behaviour (26.70%), smear reputation (22.52%), physical violence (11.30%), intimidating behaviour (10.16%) and sexual harassment (4.10%), respectively. Moreover, nurses' exposure to workplace violence was significantly and positively influenced by the perceptions of abusive supervision (β = 0.209, p < .01) and the symptoms of anxiety and depression (β = 0.328, p < .01). Anxious and depressive symptoms partly mediated the association between abusive supervision and workplace violence, which were significantly moderated by work ability (β = -0.021, p < .05). Conclusions: Our study assesses the prevalence of the seven types of workplace violence against Chinese nurses. Majority of nurses have experienced different types of workplace violence. Nurses who are abused by their supervisor are more likely to develop poor psychological health than those who are not. Moreover, nurses' positive association of abusive supervision with workplace violence is more notable among nurses with lower work ability. Implications of nursing management: 'No abusive supervision, no workplace violence'. A harmonious nursing environment needs to be provided to minimize exposure to workplace violence and mental health threats towards nursing staff, which is a key point for hospital administrators and health policymakers. Essential work ability should be developed to reduce the damage of the abusive supervision and workplace violence against nurses.

Abstract:Aim. The aim of this study was to determine whether the relationship among the nursing work environment, psychological resilience, and transition shock was mediated by nurses’ perceived professional benefits and to explore the associations among these variables. Background. Nurses’ transition shock is an important factor in reducing the nursing staff turnover rate. Thus, clarifying the factors influencing nurses’ transition shock has become a priority. Methods. Cross-sectional research was used in this study. A total of 200 newly graduated Chinese nurses were recruited by convenience sampling in 2022 from three tertiary hospitals in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. Data were collected through questionnaires and included demographic data in addition to the perceived professional benefit scale of nurses, the nursing work environment scale, the brief resilience scale, and the transition shock scale. The data were analysed using SPSS 25.0 and the SPSS PROCESS macro programme, Model 6. Results. The perceived professional benefit of new nurses, the nursing work environment, and psychological resilience directly influenced transition shock ( p < 0.01 ). The perceived professional benefit of new nurses mediated the relationship among the nursing work environment, psychological resilience, and transition shock ( p < 0.01 ). The final model’s mediating influence contributed 21.53% and 6.85% to the total influence. Conclusion. Nursing managers can improve nurses’ perceptions of professional benefits from psychological resilience and the nursing work environment to reduce the impact of transition from school to work for new nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. This study provides a reference for the development of intervention strategies and training programmes to assist new nurses in cancer hospitals in effectively navigating the transition into their careers. In the future, appropriate training methods should be used at the individual cognitive, psychological, and organizational levels to improve the physical and mental health of new nurses and their ability to provide high-quality patient care.

Abstract:Background: The nursing industry's stability and progress are adversely affected by the high attrition rate and shortage of nurses; therefore, it is critical to investigate the variables that influence the professional stability of nurses. The sense of professional mission and career success have positive significance for reducing nurses' job burnout. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential mediating role of psychological resilience in this relationship. Methods: Self-reported questionnaires were utilized by 335 intensive care unit (ICU) nurses to assess their sense of professional mission, psychological resilience, and career success in this cross-sectional study. A structural equation model was developed to validate the relationship between the variables. Results: There is a correlation among sense of professional mission, psychological resilience and career success. Significant mediating effect of psychological resilience exists between sense of professional mission and career success. Conclusions: In this study, psychological resilience plays an intermediary role between sense of professional mission and career success, which provides support for further understanding the mechanism between sense of professional mission and career success and bolstering the case for devising comprehensive intervention strategies for psychological resilience. Nursing managers should focus on nurses' sense of professional mission and psychological resilience, and implement strategies to enhance nurses' psychological resilience in order to boost their career success.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine how work-family-school role conflict and social support influence psychological well-being among registered nurses pursuing an advanced degree.METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational study design was used. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 320 registered nurses pursuing an advanced nursing degree at 13 hospitals in Korea, from June to October 2011. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with the AMOS program. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to evaluate the measurement model prior to the testing of study hypotheses before and after controlling for extraneous variables.RESULTS: The fit parameters of the modified model (χ(2)/df=2.01, GFI=0.91, AGFI=0.89, CFI=0.92, SRMR=0.068, and RMSEA=0.065) indicated its suitability as the research model. This model explained 45% of the variance in work-related psychological well-being and 52% of the variance in general psychological well-being. Both social support and work-family-school role conflict exerted significant effects on work-related psychological well-being and general psychological well-being.CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study imply that work-family-school role conflict influences the psychological well-being of registered nurses pursuing an advanced degree. It is necessary for nursing administrators to develop strategies to help registered nurses to manage their multiple roles and improve both their work-related psychological well-being and their general psychological well-being.

Abstract:Aims To investigate the career success and work environment among nurses with a master's or doctoral degree and analyse the effect of work environment on their career success. Methods This was a national descriptive, cross-sectional study. A total of 1223 nurses with a master's or doctoral degree from 115 tertiary hospitals across mainland China participated in the study. Subscales of the practice environment scale of the nursing work index and career success scale were utilized for data collection via email in the summer of 2017. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the collected data. Results The research showed that the career success and work environment ratings of nurses with a master's or doctoral degree were at a moderate level. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that work environment was positively correlated with career success for three of the four subscales. Conclusion The career success and work environment is moderate among nurses with a master's or doctoral degree, and improving the work environment for nurses may lead to higher career success.

Abstract:Background: Workplace violence is a global public health issue and a major occupational hazard cross borders and environments. Nurses are the primary victims of workplace violence due to their frontline roles and continuous interactions. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the status of workplace violence, turnover intention, compassion fatigue, and psychological resilience among Chinese nurses, and explore the mediating role of compassion fatigue and the moderating role of psychological resilience on relationship between workplace violence and turnover intention among Chinese nurses. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of clinical registered nurses from public hospitals in Changsha, Hunan, China. Data was collected through an online questionnaire, which included a demographic information form, the Workplace Violence Scale (WVS), the Turnover Intention Questionnaire (TIQ), the Compassion Fatigue Scale (CF-CN), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were employed to examine the relationships among the main variables. A moderated mediation analysis was further conducted using the PROCESS macro for SPSS (Model 4 and Model 8) to examine the mediating role of compassion fatigue and the moderating role of psychological resilience. Result: The present survey recruited a convenience sample of 1,141 clinical registered nurses, who reported experiencing multiple types of workplace violence during the past year. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between workplace violence and turnover intention (r = 0.466, P < 0.01) as well as compassion fatigue (r = 0.452, P < 0.01), while negative correlation between workplace violence and psychological resilience (r=-0.414, P < 0.01). Moderated mediation analysis revealed that compassion fatigue mediated, while psychological resilience moderated, the positive relationship between workplace violence and turnover intention (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study underscores the mediating effect of compassion fatigue and the moderating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between workplace violence and turnover intention among Chinese nurses. Future efforts should be undertaken to develop effective preventive measures and intervention strategies at individual, organizational, and national levels to mitigate workplace violence and foster supportive work environment. Job stressors and burnout among clinical nurses: a moderated mediation model of need for recovery and career calling

Abstract:Background: Burnout is a major concern in healthcare professions. Although theory and empirical evidence support the relationship between job stressors and burnout, the question remains how and when the job stressors are related to burnout. Based on conservation of resources theory and effort recovery model, the current study aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the effect of job stressors on burnout by investigating the mediating role of need for recovery and the moderating role of career calling. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 709 nurses enrolled from eight public hospitals in China. The Work Stressors Scale, Psychological Detachment Scale, Brief Calling Scale, and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used to collect data. Hierarchical regression analysis with bootstrapping procedure was performed to test the proposed model. Results: The results showed that need for recovery mediated the job stressors-burnout relationship, and that high career calling buffered against the relationships between job stressors and need for recovery and burnout. Furthermore, the result revealed a moderated mediation model that career calling buffered the indirect effect of job stressors on burnout through need for recovery. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that environmental demands and personal resource are important antecedents of nurses' burnout. Career calling as personal resources can serve as a protective factor that guards against burnout. Thus, nursing managers can reduce nurse burnout by focusing on effective strategies related to recovery experiences, as well as investing in training career calling.
Association between workplace bullying and nurses' professional quality of life: The mediating role of resilience

Abstract:Aim: We aim to determine workplace bullying in relation to the professional quality of life of nurses and the mediating role of resilience between workplace bullying and the professional quality of life. Background: Workplace bullying is an increasingly serious problem worldwide and deleteriously affects the occupational health and quality of life of nurses. However, it has not attracted adequate managerial attention. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a sample of 493 clinical nurses from two tertiary grade A hospitals in Guangzhou, China. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey in July 2020 and analysed with structural equation modelling. Results: Workplace bullying had negative and direct effects on the professional quality of life of nurses. Resilience mediated the relationship between workplace bullying and the professional quality of life. Conclusion: Resilience is a protective factor that helps nurses cope with workplace bullying. Managers can improve the professional quality of life of nurses by reducing workplace bullying and strengthening the resilience of nurses. Implications for nursing management: Managers must take measures to prevent the workplace bullying of nurses. In addition, nurse supervisors should pay attention to the resilience of nurses and strengthen resilience training to help nurses withstand the pressure of workplace bullying and improve their professional quality of life.
A Model of Job Satisfaction of Nurses: a Reflection of Nurses’ Working Lives in Mainland China

Abstract:Aim. This paper is a report of a study exploring nurses' views and experience regarding their working lives in Mainland China.Background. The widespread nursing shortage and high turnover has become a global issue. Job satisfaction among nurses is a key factor in nurse turnover. Although several models of job satisfaction have been suggested in Western countries, these require further development and testing in Mainland China, where the social context of the labour market is different.Method. A survey design using questionnaires was adopted. A total of 512 hospital nurses in Beijing participated in the study in 2004, representing a response rate of 81%.Findings. There was a negative relationship between nurses' job satisfaction and intention to leave their current hospitals, which was mediated by age (P < 0.05). About 40% of the variance in job satisfaction could be explained by the set of independent variables including organizational commitment, occupational stress, professional commitment, role conflict, role ambiguity, educational level, age and working years (R-2 = 0.396). Organizational commitment had the strongest impact on job satisfaction, which explained 31.3% of the variance in this, followed by occupational stress and role conflict (5.5% and 1.9% respectively). In addition, both nurses' role perception and actual role content influenced job satisfaction as well as occupational stress, role conflict and role ambiguity (P < 0.05). Nurses' educational level was also a factor related to role perception, professional commitment and role conflict (P < 0.05).Conclusion. Nurses' job satisfaction could be increased through promoting organizational and professional commitment and reducing occupational stress, role conflict and role ambiguity.

Abstract:Background Nurses’ career success is an important factor affecting the quality of nursing services and the stability of the nursing workforce, and enhancing nurses’ career success level is of key significance to the development of the nursing discipline. As psychological resilience and craftsmanship are important spiritual traits in the process of nurses’ career development, it is important to understand the mechanism of their effects on nurses’ career success level. Objective To explore the current situation of craftsmanship, psychological resilience and career success levels of female nurses in central China, and to verify the mediating role of craftsmanship between psychological resilience and female career success using structural equation model. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2359 female nurses from three hospitals in central China through an online questionnaire, including craftsmanship, psychological resilience and career success scale. The data were analyzed by Z -test and Spearman rank correlation with SPSS 23.0 statistical software, and the mechanism of the effect of craftsmanship and psychological resilience on career success was completed by AMOS 23.0 statistical software. Results The scores of career success, psychological resilience, and craftsmanship of female nurses in central China were 68.00 (61.00, 75.00), 74.00 (64.00, 84.00), and 83.00 (79.00, 95.25). Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that Chinese female nurses’ career success was positively correlated with craftsmanship ( r = 0.511, P < 0.01) and psychological resilience ( r = 0.595, P < 0.01). Craftsmanship played a mediating role between psychological resilience and career success, accounting for 39.3% of the total effect ratio. Conclusion The scores of career success and psychological resilience of female nurses in central China are at a moderate level, and craftsmanship plays a mediating role between psychological resilience and career success. It is suggested that nursing managers should pay attention to the importance of career success to nurses’ self-development and nursing team stability, and improve their sense of career success by effectively improving nurses’ psychological resilience and craftsmanship.

Resilience may affect their individual career development, the stability of the nursing team and the quality of nursing care. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using correlational design was conducted in mainland China. Data were collected using demographic and career development questionnaire, work-family conflict and resilience scale. Results: A total of 70,932 nurses were included. The total score for work-family conflict was relatively high (38.37 ± 12.82). Work-family conflict of nurses had a significant negative correlation with career development (r = -0.35, p < .001) and with resilience (r = -0.23, p < .001), while resilience had a significant positive correlation with career development (r = 0.62, p < .001). Resilience plays a mediating role between work-family conflict and career development. Conclusions: The work-family conflict had a significant negative correlation with career development among nurses. Resilience has a mediating role between work-family conflict and career development. Nursing managers could reduce the level of work-family conflict by enhancing nurses' resilience. Implications for nursing management: Nursing managers should prioritize the improvement of resilience through training and education, enhancing nurses' ability to address work-family conflicts.

Abstract:While there is a growing interest in career shocks in the careers literature, little is known about how and when they trigger employees' proactive behavioral responses leading to sustainable career outcomes. The research aims to extend previous knowledge about the effects of such career shocks and uncover their potential benefits. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, the study proposes that workplace-related negative career shocks indirectly impact employees' perceived employability by mobilizing their networking behaviors, especially when perceived career opportunities are present. To investigate this, a three-wave survey was conducted among 269 employees over four months in three companies in China. The results show that workplace-related negative career shocks indirectly contribute to employees' perceived employability by motivating them to engage in networking behaviors. Furthermore, this positive indirect relationship is stronger for employees with high perceived career opportunities. This study is the first to provide a positive perspective on the outcomes of workplace-related negative career shocks and sheds light on employees' proactive behavioral responses as a mechanism to explain the impact of such shocks on career sustainability.

Impact of bullying on occupational commitment in young nursing professionals: the mediating role of emotional labour and emotional exhaustion

Abstract:Background: Nurses are often exposed to workplace bullying, which leads to their burnout and leaving the profession. However, the processes by which workplace bullying leads to such outcomes are not clear. Aims: This study investigates how work-related and personal-related bullying affect nurses' occupational commitment by integrating emotional labour and emotional exhaustion. Method: This study employs a cross-sectional design. The model was tested using structural equation modelling with a sample of 245 Chinese nurses. Results: Work-related bullying is positively related to both surface acting and deep acting, and a negative relationship exists between deep acting and emotional exhaustion. Personal-related bullying is not related to either surface acting or deep acting, but is positively related to emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion is negatively related to affective occupational commitment. Conclusions: This study implies that bullying behaviours should be distinguished with work-related bullying and personal-related bullying, and emotional regulation strategies are meaningful in managing the negative impact of work-related bullying. Implication for nursing management: Policymakers and managers need to distinguish two types of bullying behaviour and manage them accordingly with different strategies. For nursing schools it is important to prepare nursing students with not only professional skills but also social competence and emotional management skills.
