Abstract:Euler’s elastica, a family of planar curves describing the equilibrium shapes of a thin elastic beam subjected to end forces and moments, demonstrates both geometric versatility and mechanical functionality, leading to its diverse applications across multiple disciplines. Despite its roots in ancient structural engineering practices, the kinetic potential of Euler’s elastica remains largely unexplored in this domain. To address this gap, this paper proposes the concept of end-rotation-driven kinetic elastica (ERKE) structures. This novel kinetic form consists of a sequence of discrete elastica arches transformed from initially straight members by elastic bending. The kinetic behavior arises from manipulating the end rotations of each elastica arch, prompting a continuous flow of motions resulting from adaptations in the arch shape. This adaptive quality opens up limitless possibilities for creating visually captivating dynamic patterns in the overall structure by coordinating the motions of individual arches. As the inaugural exploration of ERKE structures, this paper centers around their conceptualization, with an emphasis on morphology design, which refers to the creation of desirable dynamic patterns. To this end, the paper provides an exposition of the general design procedure and criteria, along with demonstrative examples. The paper also envisions potential application scenarios and identifies research needs, paving the way for future investigations.

Abstract:LEGO is a globally popular toy composed of colorful interlocking plastic bricks that can be assembled in many ways; however, this special feature makes designing a LEGO sculpture particularly challenging. Building a stable sculpture is not easy for a beginner; even an experienced user requires a good deal of time to build one. This paper provides a novel approach to creating a balanced LEGO sculpture for a 3D model in any pose, using centroid adjustment and inner engraving. First, the input 3D model is transformed into a voxel data structure. Next, the model’s centroid is adjusted to an appropriate position using inner engraving to ensure that the model stands stably. A model can stand stably without any struts when the center of mass is moved to the ideal position. Third, voxels are merged into layer-by-layer brick layout assembly instructions. Finally, users will be able to build a LEGO sculpture by following these instructions. The proposed method is demonstrated with a number of LEGO sculptures and the results of the physical experiments are presented.

Abstract:THE classical Euclidean constructions allow only the unmarked straightedge and a pair of compasses, now commonly called “a compass.” With these limited tools we can carry through the many beautiful constructions of elementary geometry. A lack of understanding of the “rules of the game” leads to such confused and incorrect statements as “It is impossible to trisect an angle.” But of course we can trisect a right angle; and as for trisecting any angle, there is a simple and elegant construction by Plato that does this very nicely, if we allow such a slight concession as two marks on the straightedge, or even one mark and the endpoint!

Abstract:This answer to Reviel Netz's article at first questions his optimism concerning our technological future. After that, it suggests a different role for Archimedes and the other prominent Greek mathematicians than the one claimed by Netz: as providers not of answers but of problems which called for the transformation of the abbacus and cossist algebra tradition, thereby allowing first Viete and then Descartes to create the first level of the new analysis of the seventeenth century (the second level being infinitesimal analysis).

Abstract:Visual understanding of geometric structures with complex spatial relationships is a fundamental component of human intelligence. As children, we learn how to reason about structure not only from observation, but also by interacting with the world around us -- by taking things apart and putting them back together again. The ability to reason about structure and compositionality allows us to not only build things, but also understand and reverse-engineer complex systems. In order to advance research in interactive reasoning for part-based geometric understanding, we propose a challenging new assembly problem using LEGO bricks that we call Break and Make. In this problem an agent is given a LEGO model and attempts to understand its structure by interactively inspecting and disassembling it. After this inspection period, the agent must then prove its understanding by rebuilding the model from scratch using low-level action primitives. In order to facilitate research on this problem we have built LTRON, a fully interactive 3D simulator that allows learning agents to assemble, disassemble and manipulate LEGO models. We pair this simulator with a new dataset of fan-made LEGO creations that have been uploaded to the internet in order to provide complex scenes containing over a thousand unique brick shapes. We take a first step towards solving this problem using sequence-to-sequence models that provide guidance for how to make progress on this challenging problem. Abstract:The circle, so simple and yet complex, has fascinated mathematicians since the earliest civilizations. Archimedes, a well–known Greek mathematician born in 287 BCE, began to unravel part of the mystery involving π by applying iteration to the circle. Building on Euclid's postulates and theorems, Archimedes used iterations of inscribed and circumscribed regular polygons to find upper and lower bounds for the value of π. These bounds are close approximations of the value of π, and one is still used today: 22/7 differs from π only in the third place to the right of the decimal (see fig. 1).

Abstract:Building blocks and tiles are an excellent way of learning about geometry and mathematics in general. There are several versions of tiles that are either snapped together or connected with magnets that can be used to introduce topics like volume, tessellations, and Platonic solids. However, since these tiles are made of hard plastic, they are not very suitable for creating hyperbolic surfaces or shapes where the tiles need to bend. Curvagons are flexible regular polygon building blocks that allow you to quickly build anything from hyperbolic surfaces and tori to dinosaurs and shoes. They can be used to introduce mathematical concepts from Archimedean solids to Gauss-Bonnet theorem. You can also let your imagination run free and build whatever comes to mind.

Abstract:We present several ruler and compass practical geometric constructions that can be performed in the lemniscate curve. To be precise, we provide recipes for halving, doubling, adding, subtracting, and transferring lemniscate arcs with ruler and compass. This note complements the instructions for the lemnatomic equilateral triangle and pentagon discussed in \cite{GoLa}, giving the details for the construction of the lemnatomic regular $17$-gon.

Automatic Generation of Vivid LEGO Architectural Sculptures

Abstract:Brick elements are very popular and have been widely used in many areas, such as toy design and architectural fields. Designing a vivid brick sculpture to represent a three‐dimensional (3D) model is a very challenging task, which requires professional skills and experience to convey unique visual characteristics. We introduce an automatic system to convert an architectural model into a LEGO sculpture while preserving the original model's shape features. Unlike previous legolization techniques that generate a LEGO sculpture exactly based on the input model's voxel representation, we extract the model's visual features, including repeating components, shape details and planarity. Then, we translate these visual features into the final LEGO sculpture by employing various brick types. We propose a deformation algorithm in order to resolve discrepancies between an input mesh's continuous 3D shape and the discrete positions of bricks in a LEGO sculpture. We evaluate our system on various architectural models and compare our method with previous voxelization‐based methods. The results demonstrate that our approach successfully conveys important visual features from digital models and generates vivid LEGO sculptures.
Learning to Build by Building Your Own Instructions

Abstract:Structural understanding of complex visual objects is an important unsolved component of artificial intelligence. To study this, we develop a new technique for the recently proposed Break-and-Make problem in LTRON where an agent must learn to build a previously unseen LEGO assembly using a single interactive session to gather information about its components and their structure. We attack this problem by building an agent that we call \textbf{\ours} that is able to make its own visual instruction book. By disassembling an unseen assembly and periodically saving images of it, the agent is able to create a set of instructions so that it has the information necessary to rebuild it. These instructions form an explicit memory that allows the model to reason about the assembly process one step at a time, avoiding the need for long-term implicit memory. This in turn allows us to train on much larger LEGO assemblies than has been possible in the past. To demonstrate the power of this model, we release a new dataset of procedurally built LEGO vehicles that contain an average of 31 bricks each and require over one hundred steps to disassemble and reassemble. We train these models using online imitation learning which allows the model to learn from its own mistakes. Finally, we also provide some small improvements to LTRON and the Break-and-Make problem that simplify the learning environment and improve usability.

Abstract:LEGO (R), a popular brick-based toy construction system, provides an affordable and convenient way of fabricating geometric shapes. However, building arbitrary shapes using LEGO bricks with restrictive colors and sizes is not trivial. It requires careful design process to produce appealing, stable and constructable brick sculptures. In this work, we investigate the novel problem of constructing brick sculptures from pixel art images. In contrast to previous efforts that focus on 3D models, pixel art contains rich visual contents for generating engaging LEGO designs. On the other hand, the characteristics of pixel art and corresponding brick sculpture pose new challenges to the design process. We present Pixel2Brick, a novel computational framework to automatically construct brick sculptures from pixel art. This is based on implementing a set of design guidelines concerning the visual quality as well as the structural stability of built sculptures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework with various brick sculptures (both real and virtual) generated from a variety of pixel art images. Experimental results show that our framework is efficient and gains significant improvements over state-of-the-arts.
Creating Centered Trochoids and Co-Centered Ellipses Through the Uniform Combinations of Rolling and Sliding Motions by Using Virtual Rotating Circles Technique (VRCT)

Abstract:In this article we present an innovative mental vision for creating uniform rolling and sliding motions with a definite combination for a circle that is moving along another coplanar circle. Also, we introduce two different methods for combining rolling and sliding motions through the VRCT in order to make a simple practical situation for creating centered trochoids and co-centered ellipses. In this article the traditional mathematical perspective for creating centered trochoids (through a solid rule which is based on the pure rolling a circle along another coplanar circle) is violated and changed to a novel mathematical perspective which is based on the combination of uniform rolling and sliding motions of a circle that is moving along another stationary circle! In this new vision we have not to define a centered trochoid as a swept path by an attached point to a pure rolling circle along another circle. Instead, a centered trochoid can be defined as a traced path by a certain point on the circumference of a pure rolling or rolling and sliding circle (with specific combination of rolling and sliding motions) along another coplanar circle. In our mathematical vision the physical concept of polarization plays an important role. Also, through this new mathematical perspective an ellipse can be visualized as a closed plane curve that can be generated through the pure rolling, pure sliding or rolling and sliding motions due to definite combinations of two co-polarized rotational motions with different commensurable angular frequencies! All of the above subjects can be implemented (and are observable) with the help of an innovative device that we have named it mechanical oscilloscope. The function of our invented instrument is independent from any other electronic devices such as computer and does not require programming to plot centered trochoids and co-centered ellipses.

Abstract:We present a new version of our previously proposed algorithm enabling a swarm of robots to construct a desired shape from objects in the plane. We also describe a hardware realization for this system which makes use of simple and readily sourced components. We refer to the task as planar construction which is the gathering of ambient objects into some desired shape. As an example application, a swarm of robots could use this algorithm to not only gather waste material into a pile, but shape that pile into a line for easy collection. The shape is specified by an image known as the scalar field. The scalar field serves an analogous role to the template pheromones that guide the construction of complex natural structures such as termite mounds. In addition to describing the algorithm and hardware platform, we develop some performance insights using a custom simulation environment and present experimental results on physical robots.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an algorithmic approach to design and construct planar truss structures based on symmetric lattices using modular elements. The method of assembly is similar to Leonardo grids as they both rely on the property of interlocking. In theory, our modular elements can be assembled by the same type of binary operations. Our modular elements embody the principle of geometric interlocking, a principle recently introduced in literature that allows for pieces of an assembly to be interlocked in a way that they can neither be assembled nor disassembled unless the pieces are subjected to deformation or breakage. We demonstrate that breaking the pieces can indeed facilitate the effective assembly of these pieces through the use of a simple key-in-hole concept. As a result, these modular elements can be assembled together to form an interlocking structure, in which the locking pieces apply the force necessary to hold the entire assembly together.

Abstract:Geometrically complex masonry structures (e.g., arches, domes, vaults) are traditionally built with expensive scaffolding or falsework to provide stability during construction. The process of building such structures can potentially be improved through the use of multiple robots working together in a cooperative assembly framework. Here a robot is envisioned as both a placement and external support agent during fabrication - the unfinished structure is supported in such a way that scaffolding is not required. The goal of this paper is to present and validate the efficacy of three cooperative fabrication approaches using two or three robots, for the scaffold-free construction of a stable masonry arch from which a medium-span vault is built. A simplified numerical method to represent a masonry structure is first presented and validated to analyse systems composed of discrete volumetric elements. This method is then used to evaluate the effect of the three cooperative robotic fabrication strategies on the stability performance of the central arch. The sequential method and cantilever method, which utilize two robotic arms, are shown to be viable methods, but have challenges related to scalability and robustness. By adding a third robotic agent, it becomes possible to determine a structurally optimal fabrication sequence through a multi-objective optimization process. The optimized three robot method is shown to significantly improve the structural behavior over all fabrication steps. The modeling approaches presented in this paper are broadly formulated and widely applicable for the analysis of cooperative robotic fabrication sequences for the construction of discrete element structures across scales and materials.

Abstract:In his treatise addressed to Dositheus of Pelusium, Archimedes of Syracuse obtained the result of which he was the most proud: a sphere has two-thirds the volume of its circumscribing cylinder. At his request a sculpted sphere and cylinder were placed on his tomb near Syracuse. Usually, it is admitted that to find this formula, Archimedes used a half polygon inscribed in a semicircle; then he performed rotations of these two figures to obtain a set of trunks in a sphere. This set of trunks allowed him to determine the volume. In our opinion, Archimedes was so clever that he found the proof with shorter demonstration. Archimedes did not need to know $\pi$ to prove the result and the Pythagorean theorem was probably the key to the proof.

Abstract:A beautiful theorem of Thomas Price links the Fibonacci numbers and the Lucas polynomials to the plane geometry of an ellipse, generalizing a classic problem about circles. We give a brief history of the circle problem, an account of Price's ellipse proof, and a reorganized proof, with some new ideas, designed to situate the result within a dense web of connections to classical mathematics. It is inspired by Cardano's solution of the cubic equation and Newton's theorem on power sums, and yields an interpretation of generalized Lucas polynomials in terms of the theory of symmetric polynomials. We also develop additional connections that surface along the way; e.g., we give a parallel interpretation of generalized Fibonacci polynomials, and we show that Cardano's method can be used write down the roots of the Lucas polynomials.
