Abstract:Co-Cr-Mo alloy is extensively utilized in the medical implants and aerospace components. These components are often quite complex in shape and size. To build such complex components, additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising choice. One of the cutting-edge AM methods that has raised the bar for producing complex shapes with remarkable accuracy is direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). In this context, the choice of scanning strategies plays a pivotal part in determining the mechanical properties of printed components. This study systematically investigates how different scanning strategies (stripe, mender, and chessboard) during the DMLS process impact the tensile and fatigue behavior of Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Tensile tests reveal alterations in yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and percentage elongation, while fatigue tests shed light on the endurance limit and fatigue life under cyclic loading. The tensile test results showed that the stripe scanning strategies achieved the highest YS, UTS, and percentage elongation. In addition, specimens fabricated with stripe scanning strategy showed the highest endurance limit. The results of this study can provide valuable insights into the optimization of scanning strategies for DMLS fabrication of Co-Cr-Mo components. Understanding the relationship between scanning strategies and mechanical performance is crucial for tailoring additive manufacturing processes to meet specific industry demands, whether in the field of healthcare, aerospace, and beyond.
