Abstract:In the 1950s Jacques Lacan developed a set-up with a concave mirror and a plane mirror, based on which he described the nature of human identification. He also formulated ideas on how psychoanalysis, qua clinical practice, responds to identification. In this paper Lacan's schema of the two mirrors is described in detail and the theoretical line of reasoning he aimed to articulate with aid of this spatial model is discussed. It is argued that Lacan developed his double-mirror device to clarify the relationship between the drive, the ego, the ideal ego, the ego-ideal, the other, and the Other. This model helped Lacan describe the dynamics of identification and explain how psychoanalytic treatment works. He argued that by working with free association, psychoanalysis aims to articulate unconscious desire, and bypass the tendency of the ego for misrecognition. The reasons why Lacan stressed the limits of his double-mirror model and no longer considered it useful from the early 1960s onward are examined. It is argued that his concept of the gaze, which he qualifies as a so-called "object a," prompted Lacan move away from his double-mirror set-up. In those years Lacan gradually began to study the tension between drive and signifier. The schema of the two mirrors, by contrast, focused on the tension between image and signifier, and missed the point Lacan aimed to address in this new era of his work.

Abstract:The paper explores the Lacanian metaphor of the mirror as a logical operator. While the mirror-stage has often been discussed regarding its imaginary relevance, the mirror as a logical operator has not yet been discussed. To mark a first approach to this, the paper discusses the formulas Lacan offers in his Seminar X, "Anxiety," as an example for the use of this operator. The formulas show a great deal of complexity that binds several elements of Lacanian thought together. Within Lacanian theory, they show a distinct relationship to the specularised and non-specularised images of the Möbius strip, as well as to the cross-cap, and they offer a deeper insight into the widely used metaphor of the mirror. These formulas also offer a wider insight into how 'mirroring' can be understood formally in non-Lacanian psychoanalysis. The mirror operator as a logical tool enables analysts to conceive of how an indeterminate element is part of our identity and how this structures angst.

Abstract:The socalled "Mirror Stage" ("Stade du Miroir" by J. Lacan) seems to be a normal stage of development between the sixth and the eighteenth month of age. In the centre of this study you find terms of developmental psychology and especially of psychoanalysis like: 'mother-child relationship', 'first relationship to objects', 'passage from primary to secondary narcism', 'ego-ideal' and 'ideal of the ego' and others. The Mirror Stage seems to be especially important for the formation of the identity: wether the child becomes 'normal', 'neurotic' or 'psychotic'. Here we also find terms, invented by Lacan like the 'Real', the 'Imaginary' and the 'Symbolic'.

Abstract:Jacques Lacan was a French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who created an original metapsychology based on a close reading of the work of Sigmund Freud combined with the structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure. Lacan's concept of the unconscious is that of a highly structured entity consisting of interlacing chains of signifiers (sounds, printed words, and images) based on principles of metaphor and metonymy. In this review article, the author provides a brief biographical summary of Lacan's formative years, his education, and his career, followed by a discussion of some of his major theoretical concepts. Lacan's three registers or orders of existence, the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real, and their relationship to normal and psychopathological mental functioning are described. Lacan's major structural diagnostic categories are defined as well as his proposed etiology for the development of each of them. Lacan's formulation of need, demand, and desire are described as well as his late concept of le sinthome. Brief clinical vignettes are used to illustrate some of Lacan's theoretical concepts, and some clinical recommendations are provided. Lacan's theories and practice were controversial over his almost 50-year career, and his work is largely unknown to psychiatrists and psychoanalysts in the United States. This article is an effort to fill a small part of this lacuna.

Abstract:The mirror stage is one of Jacques Lacan’s most well-received metapsychological models in the English-speaking world. In its many renditions Lacan elucidates the different forms of identification that lead to the construction of the Freudian ego. This article utilizes Lacan’s mirror stage to provide a novel perspective on autistic embodiment. It develops an integrative model that accounts for the progression of four distinct forms of autistic identification in the mirror stage; these forms provide the basis for the development of four different clinical trajectories in the treatment of autism. This model is posed as an alternative to the clinical and diagnostic framework associated with the autistic spectrum disorder.

Abstract:Lacan was the most important French philosopher and spiritual analyst. His theories have not only been increasingly applied to the contemporary psychology, philosophy, literature, but also have had a very profound influence on education and educational administration. His mirror theory argues that a baby internalizes the image in the mirror as the"self"and then gradually identifies with the image in the mirror and "small others"like faces and expressions of people around. And ultimately the subjective baby will gradually identify with the"big other", i.e. the entire linguistic symbol system around it. This theory has important implications for the school management. On the one hand, school development planning is affected by the cognitive "mirror"of different groups. And on the other hand, there exists the problem of alienation when the school's training objective as"the other"is internalized by students"themselves". In addition, the evaluation of teachers should focus on the development and growth of teachers"themselves".

[Mirror image of the ego. On Jacques Lacan's theory of the imaginary]

Abstract:Lacan places the concept of the imaginary alongside the categories of the real and the symbolic. This concept plays a highly prominent role in his thinking, given that the essential determination of the imaginary is the primary relation of the ego to the image of the similar. Thus it is not surprising that unlike Freud the early Lacan acceded to the status of theoretician of surrealism, his decentralization of the cogito having a profound effect on Dalí in particular. The author shows that non-identity and paranoic anamorphosis are only conceivable as the forms of the imaginary absolutised by Lacan if they are seen in relation to an Oedipally constructed cogito--just as mannerism regularly follows classicism and cannot be conceived of separately from it. If Freud was a classicist, Lacan was the mannerist who came after him--except that the latter refused to countenance this connection.

Models of reflexive recognition. Wallon's Origines du caractère and Lacan's "Mirror stage"

Abstract:Jacques Lacan drew on the empirical research of the psychologist Henri Wallon both in his 1938 theory of the mirror stage ("the intrusion complex") and in subsequent formulations. Yet, like Lacan's famous "return" to Freud, his recourse to Wallon is revisionary and, at times, antithetical. This essay examines the disparities between Wallon's and Lacan's work on the mirror experience, focusing especially on the status of the mirror and the identity of the reflected image. An analysis of these differences helps to clarify the meaning of the child's specular activity--"an ontological structure of the human world"--in Lacan's later view and the implications of reflexive recognition for his conception of parental agency.
A Lacanian explanation of Karon's and Villemoes's successful psychodynamic approaches to schizophrenia

Abstract:In this article I use Lacan's early theory of schizophrenia as corrected by the School of Leuven. Early in his career Lacan argued that schizophrenic people have a defective relation to language. Vergote and several of his students--all from Leuven--point out that schizophrenics also have a defective relation to their bodies. Lacan calls the defective relation to language a defect in the symbolic and he calls defective relations to the body a defect in the imaginary. Repairing defects in the symbolic requires introducing in the emotional life of the patient the paternal function of the law. Repairing the imaginary requires the more maternal help of mirroring, affirming, and holding. I underline that the two forms of healing that need to occur in the treatment of schizophrenics seem contradictory. I then proceed to demonstrate that two therapists, Bertram Karon--a non-Lacanian--and Palle Villemoes--a Lacanian-artfully combine the two contradictory strategies which are theoretically required. The remainder of the article is then devoted to a summary and a discussion of the different methods developed by these two therapists. I demonstrate that both do healing work at the imaginary level and the symbolic level. Sometimes these two therapists explicitly point out that they make a shift in their healing work with the patient; sometimes they do not alert the reader that they do so. I claim that in the work of both therapists it is the contradictory work at the level of the imaginary and of the symbolic that is healing, not the therapeutic intervention at the imaginary alone or at the symbolic alone.

Abstract:This paper is a re-engagement with some ethnographic data, originally analysed using a sociocultural approach. It makes use of a recent proposal that Lacan's ‘mirror stage’ when applied to an analysis of classroom settings and interactions can offer a fruitful way of explaining and understanding classroom lives, identities and subjectivities. In this re-engagement, use is also made of Lacan's theory of subjectivity. An account is offered of the particular influence of the teacher in two learners' lives and the relationship of this to the learner identities, regulation, subjectivity and school achievement. The paper demonstrates and argues that psychoanalytic theory has a place in the analysis of ethnographic data, taking us beyond the rational, meaning-making teacher and learner to include the affective and emotional aspects of classroom life and their implication in identity and learning.

Abstract:The article examines the unconscious uncontrolled side of the human psyche, analyzes approaches to determining the structure of the unconscious, its constituent elements and their relationships from the point of view of the concepts of prominent psychoanalysts Z. Freud, C. Jung and J. Lacan. The significance of the "mirror stage" described by Lacan is revealed. in the understanding of human self-consciousness. Particular attention is paid to Lacan's thesis that the unconscious is, first of all, language; and it is he who acts as a manifestation of a structure that has clear patterns. It is through language that we can approach understanding of the connection of the unconscious with the conscious world in the context of Lacan's definition of the triad of "real", "imaginary" and "symbolic". The purpose of the study is to show the relationship between the concepts of the structure of the unconscious and the fusion of psychoanalysis with philosophical and linguistic structuralism, which gives rise to a variety of approaches and interdisciplinary research in understanding the essence of the unconscious and interpreting social phenomena through the linguistic structures of myth.

Abstract:The Importance of Being Earnest is the most representative play of Wilde. Since the publication of it, domestic and foreign scholars have demonstrated it from many perspectives. This paper employs Lacan’s mirror stage theory to analyze the self-construction process of “identification-disintegration-reidentfication” of Jack and Algernon, the two protagonists in the play, that is, to identify themselves with the mirror images, discover the misidentification of themselves, get rid of the mirror images and reidentify themselves. It is emphasized that the self-construction process of Jack and Algernon is based on the influence of the other.

Abstract:This research paper analyzes reflexivity and metanarrative presented in Diego Velázquez's iconic painting, Las Meninas, and Mark Z. Danielewski's experimental novel, House of Leaves by examining both works' unconventional narrative structures, self-reflexivity, and fragmented nature. Utilizing the conceptual structure of the terms mentioned in the book The Philosophy of the Mirror (1994) by the late Egyptian thinker Dr. Mahmoud Ragab, as the following concepts: the mirror, the act of reflection, and the dialectic relationship between the viewer and the viewed, will lead to an exploration of the impact of self-reflection and reflective contemplation on the novel, the subject of study. Through a descriptive and analytical lens, this research paper will explore the connections between the two artistic forms, highlighting how they challenge traditional notions of representation and narrative. Through the philosophy of mirror, art challenges traditional notions of reality, authority, and representation. By examining the visual elements and literary techniques employed in these works, this paper aims to highlight how to embody and exemplify reflexivity principles. Through the dialectic relationship between the viewer and the viewed, this painting raises a wide range of artistic, literary, and philosophical questions that have had an impact on many forms of art. For example, the philosophy of this painting has influenced the French philosopher Michel Foucault, who wrote about it in the introduction to his book, The Order of Things.

Abstract:This essay intends to explore the genesis of one of the key concepts in continental philosophy of personalism-the concept of the 'Other. It attempts to use most influential philosophical and psychological contexts to demonstrate how the Self is linked to the Other logically, notionally and conceptually. The present analysis employs two principal approaches to the problem-philosophical and psychological. From the stand point of the former, the key figure of the hereunder discourse is Hegel and his theory, while the later will be represented predominantly by Lacanian ideas. Abstract:The authors describe how Lacan diverged from classical Freudian concepts to arrive at an alternative model of psychoanalysis. In a discussion that also addresses the concept of the mirror stage and Lacan's use of language, the authors show how the Lacanian concepts of jouissance and the prohibition of incest contribute to this model, which can be successfully applied to the psychoanalytic treatment of more seriously disturbed patients. A clinical vignette is presented to illustrate the latter point.

Abstract:Subjectivity in cultural studies is believed to be culturally constructed. Unlike humanists cultural theory marks subject as cultural construction rather than fixed and timeless entity. Formation of subjectivity reflects the social process that constitutes us as subjects. A Subject is not born but is transformed into one from a concrete being by his immersion into culture. Subjectivity is precisely the condition of our being which enables us to recognize ourselves as subjects or persons. Subjectivity is something in us by which we understand the world around us. The present paper is a reading of Lacan with some help from some other thinkers to understand how a subject is formed. It further outlines role of desire in formation subject and finally there is an attempt to relate the nature and dimensions of the subjectivity with what theory has to aim and subsequently aims to achieve.
Interpretation and empathy: reading Lacan with Kohut

Abstract:This paper reads Lacan's exploration of the unconscious through the prism of Kohut's emphasis upon empathy as the basis for psychoanalytic interpretation. Lacan described the disconnexion characterizing human relationships; our experience of each other and of ourselves is radically alienated by the unconscious. Lacan's unconscious is structured like a language, revealing its complexity through symbolic forms. Language and desire always belong to the Other, a dislocation underlying all transferences. In psychoanalysis, transferences provide interpretive access to the language of the unconscious. For Kohut, interpretation depends on the prior establishment of a stable, sustaining transference; human connexion is a lifelong necessity and full understanding an achievable aim. Lacan's more structural approach to the inner world provides an important counterweight to Kohut's narrow preoccupation with the two-person field, while Kohut's concept of maternal mirroring lends a humane dimension to the icy realms of Lacan's intellectual structures. Despite enormous differences, each of these contemporary rediscoverers of Freud's legacy serves to supplement the perspective of the other.
