Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a temperature-insensitive sensor based on structural long-period gratings (SLPGs) formed from isometric segments of capillary fiber (CF) fused between two single-mode fibers. SLPGs with different periods and same sensing length of 6 mm have been fabricated, and the transmissive and sensing performances have been further investigated experimentally. The sensing performances indicates that this sensor has good repeatability. The 3-periods SLPGs presents higher coupling efficiency and superior sensing performance, whose maximum refractive index (RI) sensitivities of 2288.81 nm/RIU and 3014.09 nm/RIU could be obtained in RI range from 1.439 to 1.454 for resonant peak and dip, respectively. Moreover, the resonant dip of 3-periods SLPGs shows a higher curvature sensitivity of 27.59 dB/m(-1) on intensity and -8.3 nm/m(-1) on wavelength, respectively, which is higher than the 2-periods SLPGs. More importantly, RI and curvature could be measured simultaneously by tracking the wavelengths of resonant peak and dip of the proposed SLPGs. What is more, simultaneous measurement of RI and curvature based on 3-periods SLPG has been investigated, showing that the increasing RI could enhance curvature sensitivity of resonant dip on wavelength, while hardly affect the curvature sensing performance of resonant peak. Besides, the SLPGs is insensitive to temperature, which can effectively avoid influence of temperature.
