Abstract:The development of advanced biosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity is one of the most demanded concerns in the field of biosensors. To meet this requirement, up until now, numerous nanomaterials have been introduced to develop biosensors for achieving high sensitivity and selectivity. Among the latest nanomaterials attracting attention, MXene is one of the best materials for the development of biosensors because of its various superior properties. MXenes are two-dimensional inorganic compounds with few atomic layers that possess excellent characteristics including high conductivity and superior fluorescent, optical, and plasmonic properties. In this review, advanced biosensors developed on the basis of the MXene nanocomposite are discussed with the selective overview of recently reported studies. For this, introduction of the MXene including the definition, synthesis methods, and its properties are discussed. Next, MXene-based electrochemical biosensors and MXene-based fluorescent/optical biosensors are provided, which are developed on the basis of the exceptional properties of the MXene nanocomposite. This review will suggest the direction for use of the Mxene nanocomposite to develop advanced biosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Owing to their unique physicochemical properties, MXenes have emerged as promising materials for biosensing applications. This review paper comprehensively explores the recent advancements in MXene-based biosensors for health and environmental applications. This review begins with an introduction to MXenes and biosensors, outlining various types of biosensors including electrochemical, enzymatic, optical, and fluorescent-based systems. The synthesis methods and characteristics of MXenes are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the importance of these processes in tailoring MXenes for specific biosensing applications. Particular attention is given to the development of electrochemical MXene-based biosensors, which have shown remarkable sensitivity and selectivity in detecting various analytes. This review then delves into enzymatic MXene-based biosensors, exploring how the integration of MXenes with enzymes enhances sensor performance and expands the range of detectable biomarkers. Optical biosensors based on MXenes are examined, focusing on their mechanisms and applications in both healthcare and environmental monitoring. The potential of fluorescent-based MXene biosensors is also investigated, showcasing their utility in imaging and sensing applications. In addition, MXene-based potential wearable biosensors have been discussed along with the role of MXenes in volatile organic compound (VOC) detection for environmental applications. Finally, this paper concludes with a critical analysis of the current state of MXene-based biosensors and provides insights into future perspectives and challenges in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:In recent years, advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), manufacturing processes, and material synthesis technologies have positioned flexible sensors as critical components in wearable devices. These developments are propelling wearable technologies based on flexible sensors towards higher intelligence, convenience, superior performance, and biocompatibility. Recently, two-dimensional nanomaterials known as MXenes have garnered extensive attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, outstanding electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and abundant surface functional groups. These notable attributes confer significant potential on MXenes for applications in strain sensing, pressure measurement, gas detection, etc. Furthermore, polymer substrates such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyurethane (PU), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are extensively utilized as support materials for MXene and its composites due to their light weight, flexibility, and ease of processing, thereby enhancing the overall performance and wearability of the sensors. This paper reviews the latest advancements in MXene and its composites within the domains of strain sensors, pressure sensors, and gas sensors. We present numerous recent case studies of MXene composite material-based wearable sensors and discuss the optimization of materials and structures for MXene composite material-based wearable sensors, offering strategies and methods to enhance the development of MXene composite material-based wearable sensors. Finally, we summarize the current progress of MXene wearable sensors and project future trends and analyses.

Abstract:MXene is a revolutionary two-dimensional material that has a distinct layer structure and the chemical composition of transition metal carbides. It has special physicochemical characteristics including a large specific surface area, good electrical conductivity, excellent mechanical properties and photothermal behavior, which give it a valuable variety of applications. To endow it a broader range of applications, it is often composited with carbon-based materials. Therefore, MXene and MXene/carbon composites have attracted much attention in applications such as electronics, biosensors and biomedicine over recent years. In this review, the fabrication, modification and biomedical applications of MXene and MXene/carbon composites are introduced, focussing on their biomedical applications, such as biosensors, antibacterial materials, drug delivery, and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Abstract:<p>With the advent of the era of intelligent manufacturing, sensors, with various detection objects, have set off a wave of enthusiasm and reached new heights in medical treatment, intelligent industry, daily life, and so on. MXene, as an emerging family of 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides, possesses impressive electrical conductivity, outstanding structural controllability, and satisfying universality with other substrates. Consequently, MXene-based sensors with various functions show a booming growth based on great research potential of MXene. To promote the orderly and efficient development of MXene application in sensors, and further accelerate market-scale application of ideal sensors, in this review, a full range research effort on current MXene-based sensors is summarized. Starting with various synthesis methods of the raw material MXene, a comprehensive summary work along with 1D, 2D, or 3D MXene-based sensors on most recent works is put forward, including the preparation method, characteristic structure, and potential sensing application of each type of MXene-based composite sensors. Ultimately, insights of the opportunities and challenges on the strength of the current reported MXene-based sensor are given.</p>

Abstract:MXenes are an emerging family of two-dimensional (2D) materials which exhibits unique characteristics such as metal-like thermal and electrical conductivity, huge surface area, biocompatibility, low toxicity, excellent electrochemical performance, remarkable chemical stability, antibacterial activity, and hydrophilicity. Initially, MXene materials were synthesized by selectively etching metal layers from MAX phases, layered transition metal carbides, and carbonitrides with hydrofluoric acid. Multiple novel synthesis methods have since been developed for the creation of MXenes with improved surface chemistries using non-aqueous etchants, molten salts, fluoride salts, and various acid halogens. Due to the promising potential of MXenes, they have emerged as attractive 2D materials with applications in various fields such as energy storage, sensing, and biomedical. This review provides a comprehensive overview of MXenes and discusses the synthesis and properties of MXenes, including the methods of etching, delamination, and modification/functionalization, as well as the electrical properties of MXenes. Following this, the recent advances in the development of various MXene-based sensors are presented. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for future research on the development of MXenes-based sensors are discussed.

Abstract:MXene is a newly discovered family of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides that is predominantly conductive. The most common MXene, titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ), can be used as a conductive material to enhance the photocurrent generated by photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. In order to produce MXene sheets that are of high quality for PEC sensors and other light-based applications, it is imperative that the synthesis methods for MXene production continue to be improved and that an extensive understanding of its properties is gained. Several fluorinated and non-fluorinated MXene synthesis methods from MAX are discussed in this review. Detailed description of the mechanical, optical, topological, electronic, and electrochemical properties of the resultant MXenes are also presented. A critical analysis of the density functional theory (DFT) data for pure MXene, as well as the changes in the optical bandgap of MXene when doped with other heteroatoms to form heterojunctions or ternary nanocomposites, are extensively described. Additionally, a systematic exposition is done on the current MXene-based PEC sensors, highlighting the critical parameters that yield a high performing sensor. The review concludes with an opinion on the future direction of MXenes in PEC sensing and the electrochemical field.

Abstract:Flexible wearable sensors have attracted significant interests and created high technological impact on human health monitoring, environmental pollutant detection and bimolecular identification. For sensors, the choice of sensing materials is a crucial priority. As a rising star in the family of two-dimensional materials, MXenes has metal-like electrical properties, adjustable surface chemical property, hydrophilicity and excellent mechanical properties, making them attractive for building different high-performance sensors. This study provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MXene-based sensor technology. The synthetic methods and basic properties of MXenes are first briefly introduced. The representative research progresses in MXene-based pressure sensors, strain sensors, gas sensors and electrochemical biosensors are then presented. Finally, the main challenges and future prospects of MXene-based materials in wearable sensor applications are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Various fields of study consider MXene a revolutionary 2D material. Particularly in the field of sensors, the metal‐like high electrical conductivity and large surface area of MXenes are desirable characteristics as an alternative sensor material that can transcend the boundaries of existing sensor technology. This critical review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MXene‐based sensor technology and a roadmap for commercializing MXene‐based sensors. The existing sensors are systematically categorized as chemical, biological, and physical sensors. Each category is then classified into various subcategories depending on the electrical, electrochemical, structural, or optical sensing mechanism, which are the four fundamental working mechanisms of sensors. Representative structural and electrical approaches for boosting the performance of each category are presented. Finally, factors that hinder commercializing MXene‐based sensors are discussed, and several breakthroughs in realizing commercially available MXene‐based sensors are suggested. This review provides broad insights pertaining to previous and existing MXene‐based sensor technology and perspectives on the future generation of low‐cost, high‐performance, and multimodal sensors for soft‐electronics applications.</p>

Abstract:Over the last decade MXenes have become a hotspot of materials science as one of the newest 2-dimensional (2D) materials. Upon the recognition of their distinctive features (e.g., superior optical characteristics, large surface area, excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, ease of surface functionalization, and high conductivity), their potential in biosensing applications has also gained considerable attention. With versatility in MXene synthesis methods and suitable etching, MXenes can be easily transformed into quantum dots, nanosheets, and MXenes composites. As such, during the last decade optical biosensing platforms-based on MXenes have emerged along with electrochemical sensors and wearable sensors built from MXenes. Herein, we present a broad perspective on the optical properties of MXenes alongside recent findings on their biosensing applications, which are based on different optical transduction principles (e.g., photoluminescence, colorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and electro chemiluminescence). Furthermore, the future perspective and challenges concerning MXenes-based optical sensing techniques are discussed.

Abstract:Recent progress in the application of new 2D-materials—MXenes—in the design of biosensors, biofuel cells and bioelectronics is overviewed and some advances in this area are foreseen. Recent developments in the formation of a relatively new class of 2D metallically conducting MXenes opens a new avenue for the design of conducting composites with metallic conductivity and advanced sensing properties. Advantageous properties of MXenes suitable for biosensing applications are discussed. Frontiers and new insights in the area of application of MXenes in sensorics, biosensorics and in the design of some wearable electronic devices are outlined. Some disadvantages and challenges in the application of MXene based structures are critically discussed.

Abstract:MXenes are two–dimensional layered materials of early transition metal carbides and/or nitrides applied in multiple scientific applications ranging from catalysis, energy storage, to sensors owing to their fascinating and technologically useful properties. This review presents an overview of the current state–of the–art progresses in the field of electrochemical (bio) sensors for the detection of biomarkers, pharmaceutical drugs, and environmental contaminants. Firstly, how synthetic strategies and surface functionalization affect various properties of MXenes, and consequently, the sensing performances are highlighted. Secondly, MXenes as an electrode modifier for the detection of pharmaceutical drugs, environmental contaminants, and important disease biomarkers such as cancer biomarkers, glucose, hydrogen peroxide, etc., are well discussed. Finally, challenges in this field with possible solutions and future opportunities are discussed.

Abstract:MXenes are a group of 2D transition metal carbonitrides, nitrides and carbides that have become widely recognized as useful materials since they were first discovered in 2011. MXenes, with their exceptional layered structures and splendid external chemistries, have excellent electrical, optical, and thermal properties, making them suitable for catalysis, biomedical uses, environmental remediation, energy storage, and EMI shielding. Over forty MXene compounds with surface terminations like hydroxyl, oxygen, or fluorine are hydrophilic and easily integrated into various applications. Advanced synthesis methods, including selective etching and etchant modifications, have broadened MXene surface chemistries for customized mechanical, thermal, and electrical applications. Integrating MXenes into polymer composites has demonstrated notable promise, enhancing the host polymers' electrical conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical strength. The MXene-polymer composites demonstrate remarkable prospective on behalf of advanced purposes, including flexible electronics, high-performance EMI shielding materials, and lightweight structural components. MXenes have the desirable characteristic of being able to create flexible and translucent films, as well as improve the properties of polymer matrices. This makes them very suitable for use in advanced technological applications. This review summarizes MXene research, methods, and insights, highlighting key discoveries and future directions. This also highlights the importance of ongoing research to fill in the gaps in current knowledge and improve the practical uses of MXenes.

Abstract:MXene has emerged as an amazing family of two dimensional (2D) layered materials and drawn great attention from researchers of diverse scientific fields. MXenes are the recent advancements of materials chemistry which include early transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides produced by exfoliation of selective MAX phases. MAX phase corresponds to the general formula M(n+1)AX(n) (n = 1, 2, 3) where M represents early d-block transition metals, A stands for main group sp elements (specifically groups 13 and 14) and X is either C or N atoms. MXenes have left a prodigious impact on scientific communities with new technological advancements for a plethora of potential applications in the field of catalysis, clean energy, electronics, fuel cells, supercapacitors etc. With high metallic conductivity, hydrophilicity, low diffusion barrier, high ion transport properties, biocompatibility, large surface area and ease of functionalization, the MXenes act as fascinating interface for designing next generation detection systems exploiting their utilization in analytical chemistry. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides (MXene) have emerged as a rising family of atomic layered nanomaterials which undergoes intensive investigations in interdisciplinary applications. The large surface-to-volume ratio, excellent mechanical strength, desirable biocompatibility, along with tunable electronic and optical properties, render 2D MXenes exceptional attractive as versatile nanoplatforms for biosensing. Herein, advanced progress and novel paradigms of MXene-based biosensors are reviewed, focusing on the combination of MXenes with various detection techniques that promotes target recognition and signal transducing. Regarding the nature of transducing signals, MXene-based biosensors are categorized into two groups where MXenes serve as electrical platforms or optical platforms, respectively. The merits of MXenes are critically compared with other 2D materials to illustrate the distinctive advantages of MXenes in biosensing, while challenges such as environmental vulnerability was discussed to guide the sensor design. Facing with the rapid development of wearable electronics and internet of medical things, as well as escalating demanding in precision medicine, perspectives are provided to elucidate the potential of MXenes in propelling advances in these trending biomedical applications.

Abstract:2D materials have brought about significant technological advancements in the field of biomaterials. ‘MXene’, a ceramic-based 2D nanomaterial, is comprised of transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides having a planar structure educed from a ceramic ‘MAX’ phase by etching out ‘A’ from it, has emerged to surpass drawbacks of conventional biomaterials. In spite of their substantial properties like large surface area, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, metallic conductivity, and size tunability, the use of MXene is restricted in biomedical applications due of its poor stability in physiological environments, lack of sustained and controlled drug release, and low biodegradability, and these limitations lead to the notion of adopting MXene/Polymer nanocomposites. The availability of functional groups on the surface of MXenes enables polymer functionalization. These polymers functionalized MXene nanocomposites exhibit high photothermal conversion efficiency, selectivity, and stimuli-responsiveness towards malignant cells, electron sensitivity, higher antibacterial properties, and the like. This review emphasizes the innovative exemplars of polymer functionalized MXene composites for the burgeoning biomedical applications, which include controlled and sustained drug delivery, antibacterial activity, photothermal cancer therapy, unambiguous biosensing, contrast-enhanced diagnostic imaging, and bone regeneration.

Abstract:MXenes, a kind of two-dimensional material of early transition metal carbides and carbonitrides, have emerged as a unique class of layered-structured metallic materials with attractive features, as good conductivity comparable to metals, enhanced ionic conductivity, hydrophilic property derived from their hydroxyl or oxygen-terminated surfaces, and mechanical flexibility. With tunable etching methods, the morphology of MXenes can be effectively controlled to form nanoparticles, single layer, or multi-layer nanosheets, which exhibit large specific surface areas and is favorable for enhancing the sensing performance of MXenes based sensors. Moreover, MXenes are available to form composites with other materials facilely. With structure design, MXenes or its composite show enhanced mechanical flexibility and stretchability, which enabled its wide application in the fields of wearable sensors, energy storage, and electromagnetic shielding. In this review, recent progress in MXenes is summarized, focusing on its application in wearable sensors including pressure/strain sensing, biochemical sensing, temperature, and gas sensing. Abstract:Flexible and wearable devices have drawn great attention due to their promising applications from physiological signal detection to disease diagnosis. As a critical element of flexible and wearable devices, chemo- and bio-sensors have been widely merged with advanced nanomaterials. MXenes, a type of nanomaterial from the family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides, have been intensively explored in sensors, energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, biomedical engineering, and catalysis, owing to their fascinating structures and outstanding properties. In this review, we focus on recent advances in various flexible and wearable chemo- and bio-sensors derived from pristine MXenes or their nanocomposites. We first present the preparation strategies, surface modification, and performances of MXenes. Then, diverse chemo- and bio-sensors developed based on the MXenes are elaborated, including their unique properties, high sensitivity, and selectivity. Furthermore, we illustrate the related applications in the biomedical field and integrated biosensing platforms. In the end, the current challenges and future perspectives for MXene-based chemo- and bio-sensors are discussed.

Abstract:In the present mini-review article, we have compiled the previously reported literature on the fabrication of MXenes and their hybrid composite materials based electrochemical sensors for the determination of phenolic compounds and counter electrodes for platinum (Pt)-free dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). MXenes are two-dimensional (2D) materials with excellent optoelectronic and physicochemical properties. MXenes and their composite materials have been extensively used in the construction of electrochemical sensors and solar cell applications. In this paper, we have reviewed and compiled the progress in the construction of phenolic sensors based on MXenes and their composite materials. In addition, co1.unter electrodes based on MXenes and their composites have been reviewed for the development of Pt-free DSSCs. We believe that the present review article will be beneficial for the researchers working towards the development of phenolic sensors and DSSCs using MXenes and their composites as electrode materials.

Abstract:The rapid development of flexible electronics has made it possible to realize flexible sensors with high sensitivity and a wide detection range. In recent years, the two-dimensional MXene layer materials composed of transition metals, carbon and/or nitrogen have attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of flexible sensors, because of their high conductivity, high specific surface area, outstanding hydrophilicity, excellent mechanical properties and other characteristics. They can be composited with other materials, such as carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers and graphene, to form a variety of materials. Here, the structure and synthesis of MXene materials are introduced, followed by a of their preparation methods, structures, performance and sensing mechanisms as flexible sensors. Finally, research trends for flexible sensors using MXene materials are discussed.
