Abstract:Steric hindered frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been shown to activate hydrogen molecules, and their reactivity is strongly determined by the geometric parameters of the Lewis acid s and bases. A recent experimental study showed that ionic liquids (ILs) could largely improve the effective configuration of FLPs. However, the detailed mechanistic profile is still unclear. Herein, we performed a molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, aimi ng to reveal the effects of ILs on the structures of FLPs, and to present a rule for selecting more efficient reaction media. For this purpose, mixture systems were adopt consisting of the ILs [Cnmim][NTf2] (n= 6, 10, 14), and the typical FLP (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 . Radial distribution function (RDF) results show that toluene competes with (tBu)3P to interact with B(C6F5)3 , resulting in a relatively low effective (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 complex. [Cnmim][NTf2] is more intended to form a solvated shell surrounding the (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 , which increases the amount of effective FLPs. Spatial distribution function (SDF) results show that toluene formed a continuum solvation shell, which hinders the interactions of (tBu)3P and B(C6F5)3 , while [Cnmim][NTf2] leave a relatively large empty space, which is accessible by (tBu3)P molecules, resulting in a higher probability of Lewis acids and bases interactions. Lastly, we find that the longer alkyl chain length of[Cnmim] cations, the higher probability of effective FLPs.

Abstract:Nowadays, hydrogen activation by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) and their applications have been demonstrated to be one of emerge research topics in the field of catalysis. Previous studies have shown that the thermodynamics of these reaction is determined by electronic structures of FLPs and solvents. Herein, we investigated the systems consisting of typical FLPs and ionic liquids (ILs), which are well known by their large number of types and excellent solvent effects. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the thermodynamics for H2 activation by both inter‐ and intra‐molecular FLPs, as well as the individual components. The results show that the computed overall Gibbs free energies in ILs are more negative than that computed in toluene. Through the thermodynamics partitioning, we find that ILs favor the H‐H cleavage elemental step, while disfavored the elemental steps of proton attachment, hydride attachment and zwitterionic stabilization. Moreover, the results show that these effects are strongly dependent on the type of FLPs, where intra‐molecular FLPs are more effected compared to the inter‐molecular FLPs.

Abstract:In this paper we have investigated via experimental and simulations techniques the transport properties, in terms of total ionic conductivity and ion diffusion coefficients, of ionic liquids and lithium salt mixtures composed of two anions, bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI), and two cations, N-ethyl-N-methylimidazolium (emim) and lithium. The comparison of the experimental results with the simulations shows an exceptional agreement over a wide temperature range. Of particular interest is the high agreement achieved at lower temperature, which is a result of the extended simulation length of, at least, a factor of 5 compared with previous work. The results show as the addition of TFSI favor the formation of lithium dimers (Li+ - TFSI- - Li+). A closer analysis of such dimers shows that involved lithium ions move nearly as fast as single lithium ions although they have a different coordination and much slower TFSI exchange rates.

Abstract:The ion interactions in two novel ionic liquids containing the asymmetric sulfonimide anion, (difluoromethanesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (DFTFSI), are investigated using 1H–19F Heteronuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (HOESY) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in combination with relaxation measurements, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These methods provide insights into how the different end groups of the anion interact with different regions of the IL cations. The 1H–19F cross-relaxation rates (σ) between different pairs of nuclei measured by HOESY are interpreted based on inter/intra molecular distances and dynamics. The results show that the protonated end of the DFTFSI anion (i.e., the CF2H group) preferentially interacts with the IL cations, while the MD simulations also show evidence of C-H…O hydrogen bonding interactions between DFTFSI and the methoxy-functionalised cation C2O1mpyr, thereby explaining the observed lower ionic conductivity and higher density in this IL as compared to the C3mpyr DFTFSI system.

Abstract:In Fig. 1b the MSD of Li for both packages is shown. The simulation utilizing the modified AMBER10 package is more than a factor 2 longer. Therefore, the MSD is represented by a line while the other one which is obtained via the Utah group code by points including the error bar. The agreement between both packages is excellent. Radial distribution functions contain information about the accumulation of particles around a center. The investigated systems contain three species. As mentioned in the main article, Lithium ions are coordinated by TFSI oxygens. The second coordination shell is formed by the IL cation, emim. Therefore, in Fig. 1a the radial distribution function of emim around Li is presented. The second coordination shell is strongly influenced by the first one due to electrostatic interactions between emim and TFSI. Thus, we only focus on this RDF. The RDF shows as well as the MSD a good agreement. The small difference in the first coordination shell can be explained by the bond constraining algorithm since AMBER10 constrains only

Abstract:We explore an idealized theoretical model for the transport of ions within highly asymmetric ionic liquid mixtures. A primitive model (PM)-inspired system serves as a representative for asymmetric ionic materials (such as liquid crystalline salts) which quench to form disordered, partially-arrested phases. Self-Consistent Generalized Langevin Equation (SCGLE) Theory is applied to understand the connection between the size ratio of charge-matched salts and their average mobility. Within this model, we identify novel glassy states where one of the two charged species (either the macro-cation or the micro-anion) are arrested, while the other retains mobility. We discuss how this result is useful in the development of novel single-ion conducting phases in ionic liquid based materials.

Abstract:A lattice model developed previously is adopted to describe the vapor−liquid- and liquid−liquid-phase behavior of the systems containing ionic liquids that are treated as chainlike molecules with a chain length of r, while that of solvents is taken as 1. To take into account the impact of hydrogen bonds existing in the solutions to properties, the exchange energy in the model is expressed as a function of the temperature based on the concept of the double lattice model. It is found that this model can correlate infinite diluted activity coefficients, vapor pressures of solvents, and liquid−liquid equilibria of ionic liquid solutions successfully. Comparison between the calculated results and the experimental data shows the vigor of the model.
Self-Consistent Scheme Combining MD and Order- N DFT Methods: An Improved Set of Nonpolarizable Force Fields for Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The nonpolarizable force field of ionic liquids is tuned by using the self-consistent scheme of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and first-principles calculation based on the order-N density functional theory (DFT). The atomic charges are determined by using the whole MD cell for DFT calculation and accounts effectively for the many-body effects of charge transfer and intramolecular polarization. The charges represent effective interactions in the condensed phase within the framework of the nonpolarizable force field and can be an alternative for an explicitly many-body model incorporating, for example, polarizability. Here we demonstrate the performance of nonpolarizable force field determined with the MD-DFT self-consistent scheme in imidazolium-, pyrrolidinium-, and ammonium-based ionic liquids. The variation ranges of molecular charges are much larger with the compositions of the ionic liquid than with the thermodynamic conditions, and the charge-ordering structures become systematically weaker with the effective charges. For energetic properties, while the calculated heat of vaporization depends on the atomic and molecular charges, the corresponding heat capacity is not strongly affected by the DFT-based variation. For transport properties, the self-diffusion coefficient, electrical conductivity, and viscosity vary much more in the self-consistent scheme. The effective DFT charge is observed to enhance the fluidity of ionic liquids and improve the accuracy of electrical conductivity and viscosity. This is due to the weakened interactions among the ions, and the too slow motions observed with a full-charge model are well corrected through the iteration of MD and DFT. We therefore conclude that the set of nonpolarizable force fields obtained with the MD-DFT self-consistent scheme leads to better description of transport properties of ionic liquids.

Abstract:Constrained molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate the lithium chloride ionic associations in dilute aqueous solutions over a wide temperature range. Solvent mediated potentials of mean force have been carefully calculated at different thermodynamic conditions. Two intermediate states of ionic association can be well identified with an energy barrier from the oscillatory free energy profile. Clear pictures for the microscopic association structures are presented with a remarkable feature of strong hydration effect of lithium ion and the bridging role of its hydrating complex. Experimental association constants have been reasonably reproduced and a general trend of the increasing ionic association at high temperatures and low densities was observed. Additional simulations with different numbers of water molecules have been performed to check the possible artifacts introducing from periodic and finite size effects and confirm the reliability of our simulation results. Marginal differences of the simulated curves are believed to result from the significant compensation and canceling effect between the bare ionic forces and solvent induced mean force. Finally we confirmed the importance of accurate descriptions of dielectric properties of solvent in the ionic association study.

Abstract:Ionic liquid mixtures have garnered significant attention due to their promising applications. Despite this interest, there remains a limited understanding of these mixtures, particularly regarding their microstructure. A comprehensive understanding of their microstructural characteristics and properties is essential for harnessing the full potential of ionic liquid mixtures. In this work, the structural properties and interactions were investigated within mixtures of two specific ionic liquids: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 4 C 1 im][NTf 2 ]) and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 4 C 1 pyrr][NTf 2 ]). Employing a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, the following conclusions were obtained: (1) The cis - and trans -configurations of [NTf 2 ] − coexist in pure ionic liquids and their mixtures; (2) The primary interaction site of [C 4 C 1 im] + and [C 4 C 1 pyrr] + are C 2 − H and H on the methylene group attached to the N atom, respectively. It mainly interacts with O atoms in [NTf 2 ] − anions through hydrogen bond interactions; (3) The introduction of [C 4 C 1 pyrr][NTf 2 ] weakens the hydrogen bonding interactions within the ionic liquid mixtures.

Abstract:We studied the liquid structures and dynamics of a series of dual-functionalised ionic liquids (DFILs) by Md simulations. The studied DFILs consist of functionalised imidazolium cations with a nitrile group and varying lengths of ether side chains, paired with bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) imide anions, denoted as [C2CNIm(EtO)nMe][Tf2N]. We instigated distribution functions, Voronoi tessellation, and cluster analysis, to probe the liquid structures. Furthermore, we explored dynamic properties such as mean-square displacements (MSD), self-diffusivity coefficients, hydrogen bonding, ion pairing, and ion cage effects. Our findings revealed a correlation between the length of the ether side chains and the density of the studied DFILs when the longer side chains lead to a decreased density. Calculated partial radial distribution functions (PRDF) of ether side chains of the cations demonstrated a tendency for self-aggregation as the chain length increased. The combined distribution functions diagrams show that the hydrogen bond between ions is more pronounced for cations with smaller side chains. Anions displayed higher diffusivity than the cations, and among the cations, [C 2CN Im(EtO) 6 Me] + has the lowest diffusion coefficient. Various methods evaluated the micro-heterogeneity dynamics of DFILs.

Abstract:We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on classical force field to provide the liquid structure in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid in the presence of ethylene, dimethyl carbonate co-solvents and 1M LiTFSI mixtures which are currently being targeted for applications in next-generation Li-ion battery electrolytes. To show the dependence of the properties on the concentration, we simulated both pure IL and ternary mixtures of IL, EC and DMC with different mixing ratios. The solvation of lithium cations in pure and mixed IL/organic carbonate solvents has been investigated. The MD simulations have predicted a preference of Li+ ions to interact with DMC molecules within its first solvation shell rather than with the highly polar EC ones in the IL/carbonate mixtures, a phenomon which is attributed to the local tetrahedral packing of the solvent molecules in the first solvation shell of Li+ ions.The coordination of the O/N atoms of the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion to Li+ ions as well as to the most acidic H atom of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation has also been analysed, which showed a marked increase in the amplitude of RDF peaks with increase in carbonate concentration, indicating that the interaction between the ions was enhanced by the presence of high carbonate content. Furthermore, in the pure ionic liquid, adjacent cations are almost exclusively located on top and below the ring cation, whereas the anions mainly coordinate to the cation within the ring plane. The addition of large amount of carbonate co-solvents disturb the original near ordering which is found in the pure ionic liquid.

Abstract:In recent years, several specific imidazolium-based ionic liquids with halogen substituents on the imidazole ring as well as on the alkyl chains have been reported. In this work, noncovalent interactions in four halogenated ionic liquids, i.e. 2-bromo-/iodo- and 4,5-dibromo-/diiodo-1,3-dimethylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonates, were systematically investigated using density functional theory calculations. The structural and energetic properties of the ion pairs for such ionic liquids have been fully examined and compared with the non-halogenated ones. It was found that C-X center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonds, C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions with the anion located over the imidazole ring in the ion pairs. In addition, the structures and energetics of two ion pairs for such ionic liquids were also explored to reproduce experimental observations. The halogen-bonded ring structures and the conformers with the concurrent C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-X center dot center dot center dot O contacts were predicted, consistent with the X-ray crystal structures of corresponding organic salts. Finally, the implications of the observed structural and energetic features of ion pairs on the design of halogen-bonding ionic liquids were discussed. The results presented herein should provide useful information in the development of novel halogenated ionic liquids used for specific tasks ranging from organic synthesis to gas absorption.

Abstract:The structure and dynamics of liquid lithium are studied using two simulation methods: orbital‐free (OF) first‐principles molecular dynamics (MD), which employs OF density functional theory (DFT), and classical MD utilizing a second nearest‐neighbor embedded‐atom method potential. The properties studied include the dynamic structure factor, the self‐diffusion coefficient, the dispersion relation, the viscosity, and the bond angle distribution function. Simulation results were compared to available experimental data when possible. Each method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. For example, OFDFT gives better agreement with experimental dynamic structure factors, yet is more computationally demanding than classical simulations. Classical simulations can access a broader temperature range and longer time scales. Role of Dynamically Frustrated Bond Disorder in a Li+ Superionic Solid Electrolyte

Abstract:Inorganic lithium solid electrolytes are critical components in next-generation solid-state batteries, yet the fundamental nature of the cation–anion interactions and their relevance for ionic conductivity in these materials remain enigmatic. Here, we employ first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to explore the interplay among chemistry, structure, and functionality of a highly conductive Li+ solid electrolyte, Li3InBr6. Using local-orbital projections to dynamically track the evolution of the electronic charge density, the simulations reveal rapid, correlated fluctuations between cation–anion interactions with different degrees of directional covalent character. These chemical bond dynamics are shown to correlate with Li+ mobility and are enabled thermally by intrinsic frustration between the preferred geometries of chemical bonding and lattice symmetry. Structure and transport properties of LiTFSI-based deep eutectic electrolytes from machine-learned interatomic potential simulations

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents have recently gained significant attention as versatile and inexpensive materials with many desirable properties and a wide range of applications. In particular, their characteristics, similar to those of ionic liquids, make them a promising class of liquid electrolytes for electrochemical applications. In this study, we utilized a local equivariant neural network interatomic potential model to study a series of deep eutectic electrolytes based on lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The use of equivariant features combined with strict locality results in highly accurate, data-efficient, and scalable interatomic potentials, enabling large-scale MD simulations of these liquids with first-principles accuracy. Comparing the structure of the liquids to the reported results from classical force field (FF) simulations indicates that ion-ion interactions are not accurately characterized by FFs. Furthermore, close contacts between lithium ions, bridged by oxygen atoms of two amide molecules, are observed. The computed cationic transport numbers (t+) and the estimated ratios of Li+-amide lifetime (τLi-amide) to the amide's rotational relaxation time (τR), combined with the ionic conductivity trend, suggest a more structural Li+ transport mechanism in the LiTFSI:urea mixture through the exchange of amide molecules. However, a vehicular mechanism could have a larger contribution to Li+ ion transport in the LiTFSI:N-methylacetamide electrolyte. Moreover, comparable diffusivities of Li+ cation and TFSI- anion and a τLi-amide/τR close to unity indicate that vehicular and solvent-exchange mechanisms have rather equal contributions to Li+ ion transport in the LiTFSI:acetamide system.

Abstract:One of the key challenges in the industrial application of ionic liquids (ILs) is their extreme characteristics, such as viscosity, glass transition temperatures, and conductivity. Understanding the relationship between ILs structure and physicochemical property is a crucial aspect of the directed design of ILs with good properties, which is a prerequisite for their successful implementation in industrial processes. In this work, high-level quantum-chemical research with for four pairs ionic liquids, [Emim][X] and [Emim][BF 3 X] (X = CH 3 SO 3 , EtSO 4 , HSO 4 , Tos), was performed, to analyze the stable structure, interionic interaction, and charge transfer and provide a new insight into the property variances at the molecular level. The result shows that the overall structural stability of ionic liquids is contributed with hydrogen bonding network between the protons in the C–H and N–H of the cation and oxygen atoms of the anion, as well as fluorine atoms. The nature and strength of the interionic interaction were measured via atoms in molecule analysis and sobEDAw method and results suggested that BF 3 could waning interionic interaction of ion pairs. Moreover, a close relation between the binding energies of ion pairs and physicochemical properties was established: the weaker the interionic interaction, the lower is the viscosity and glass transition, and the higher is the conductivity.

Abstract:The anion chemistry of lithium salts plays a pivotal role in determining the physicochemical and electrochemical performances of ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes. This work explores the effects of anion size and symmetry on coordination and dynamics of lithium ions (Li+) through molecular dynamics simulations. Four types of ILs composed of the same cation N-N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)-ammonium (DEME+) and different anions of symmetrical bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI−) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI−), as well as asymmetric (fluorosulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (FTFSI−) and (difluoromethylsulfonyl)-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (DFTFSI−) are studied for comparison purpose. The calculation results show that the formation of Li+ aggregates in concentrated IL electrolytes could enhance Li+ transport due to the Li+ transport mechanism gradually shifts from vehicle transport to Li+ hopping through the anion ligand layers. Furthermore, it can be seen that the asymmetric anion based electrolytes possess superior performance than that of symmetric anions. In addition, the dual-anion based electrolytes all exhibit faster Li+ diffusion coefficient than mono-anion based electrolytes, which arise from the synergistic effect between mixed anions. As such, this work highlights the role of the anion structures and synergism in the rational design of concentrated IL-based electrolytes.
