Strong Tough Ionic Organohydrogels with Negative‐Thermopower via the Synergy of Coordination Interaction and Hofmeister Effect

Abstract:A multi‐hierarchical network including hydrogen bond, coordination bond, and denser polymer chains is successfully constructed through the synergy of the coordination effect of polymer to cations and the Hofmeister effect of anions to polymer, which can simultaneously improve the mechanical performance and negative‐thermopower, suggesting a new way to obtain high‐performance n‐type i‐TE materials for the application of flexible electronics. Ionic thermoelectric (i‐TE) gels have attracted widespread attention in flexible electronics due to their flexibility, leakage‐free, low toxicity, and converting low‐grade waste heat into electricity. For practical application, it is strongly desirable to fabricate negative‐thermopower (n‐type) i‐TE gels with excellent mechanical performances, which is still a big challenge. Herein, a multi‐hierarchical network structure is proposed to simultaneously improve the TE and mechanical performance. Such structure including hierarchical hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and dense polymer chains is realized via the synergy of the coordination effect of polymer to cations and the Hofmeister effect of anions to polymer. As a result, the optimized gel exhibits not only negative thermopower up to −3.69 mV K−1 with a conductivity of 0.15 S m−1 at room temperature, but also outstanding tensile strength (>6.7 MPa), elongation at break (>1100%), and toughness (>43 MJ m−3), which is the toughest n‐type i‐TE gel reported to date. In addition, these n‐type i‐TE gels present good freeze tolerance (−58.53 °C) and dry resistance. Furthermore, the application potentials of the i‐TE device are proven in converting human thermal power into electricity. These findings provide a new way to obtain high‐performance n‐type i‐TE materials by synergistic anion and cation action on polymers.

Giant-Thermopower Ionogels for Multifunctional Energy Harvesting Through Molecularly Selective Ionic Pairing and Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:Ionogels are emerging multifunctional materials for low-grade energy conversion and storage due to their high thermopowers, low costs, and facile productions. However, the thermoelectric synergy between ion-ion and polymer-ion interactions at the molecular level remains unexplored. Here, thermopower of ionogels composed of PVDF-HFP and EMIM:TFSI are enhanced from 5.3 to 21.2 mV/K by molecularly tailoring Coulombic and Lewis acid-base interactions. First, doping the ionogels with sodium bis(trifluoro-methylsulfonyl) imide (Na:TFSI) can greatly improve the thermopower. This improvement is ascribed to the stronger Coulombic interactions between the doped Na+ and TFSI-, which selectively induces the formation of [Na:(TFSI)n]1–n contact ion pairs, blocks the migration of TFSI-, and increases the difference in mobilities between EMIM+ and TFSI–. Second, large amounts of hydrogen bonds are selectively formed between the terminal hydroxyl groups (-OH) in the added polyethylene glycol (PEG) and EMIM+. The Lewis acid-base interaction between the O˙ with lone-pair electrons in -OH of PEG and the acidic protons in EMIM+ is critical in promoting the heat of transport of EMIM+, which further increases the thermopower. In terms of applications, we demonstrate the potential of ionogels in multifunctional energy harvesting with high thermovoltages, including thermoelectric supercapacitors, highly sensitive thermal sensors, and thermoelectric ionogel-based triboelectric nanogenerators. Overall, this work offers molecular insights into Coulombic and Lewis acid-base interactions for enhancing thermopowers of ionogels, also broadening their applications in low-grade energy harvesting and self-powered electronic devices.

Abstract:We report a novel giant oriented structure observed in plate hydrogels synthesized by photo-polymerization of cationic monomers with a cross-linker in the presence of a semi-rigid polyanion as the dopant. The giant structure, formed via self-assembly of the semi-rigid polyion complex, consists of millimetre-scale cubic packed concentric cylindrical domains that are sandwiched by two homeotropically aligned outer layers. A universal relationship between the diameter of the cylinders D and the thickness of the swollen gel T is observed, as D = 0.5T, regardless the change in the concentrations of the polyanion and precursor cationic monomer. This result permits us to induce the giant concentric structure into hydrogels with tunable cylindrical sizes.

Abstract:Ionic thermoelectrics show great potential in low-grade heat harvesting and thermal sensing owing to their ultrahigh thermopower, low cost and ease in production. However, the lack of effective n-type ionic thermoelectric materials seriously hinders their applications. Here, we report giant and bidirectionally tunable thermopowers within an ultrawide range from -23 to +32 mV K-1 at 90% RH in solid ionic-liquid-based ionogels, rendering it among the best n- and p-type ionic thermoelectric materials. A novel thermopower regulation strategy through ion doping to selectively induce ion aggregates via strong ion-ion interactions is proposed. These charged aggregates are found decisive in modulating the sign and enlarging the magnitude of the thermopower in the ionogels. A prototype wearable device integrated with 12 p-n pairs is demonstrated with a total thermopower of 0.358 V K-1 in general indoor conditions, showing promise for ultrasensitive body heat detection.

Abstract:Ionic thermoelectric materials based on organic polymers are of great significance for low-grade heat harvesting and self-powered wearable temperature sensing. Here, we demonstrate a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel that relies on the differential transport of H+ in PVA hydrogels with different degrees of crystallization. After the inorganic acid is infiltrated into the physically cross-linked PVA hydrogel, the ionic conductor exhibits a huge ionic thermopower of 38.20 mV K-1, which is more than twice the highest value reported for hydrogen ion transport thermoelectric materials. We attribute the enhanced thermally generated voltage to the movement of H+ in the strong hydrogen bond system of PVA hydrogels and the restrictive effect of the strong hydrogen bond system on anions. This ionic thermoelectric hydrogel opens up a new way for thermoelectric conversion devices using H+ as an energy carrier.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence sensations have aroused scientific interest from electronic conductors to bio-inspired ionic conductors. The conductivity of electrons decreases with increasing temperature, while the ionic conductivity agrees with an Arrhenius equation or a modified Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. Herein, thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropyl amide) (PNIPAm) and single-ion-conducting poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic lithium salt) (PAMPSLi) were copolymerized via a facile radical polymerization to demonstrate a very intriguing anti-Arrhenius ionic conductivity behaviour during thermally induced volume-phase transition. These smart hydrogels presented very promising scaffolds for architecting flexible, wearable or advanced functional ionic devices.

Abstract:The emerging cryoprotectant replacement method endows hydrogels with nondrying and antifreezing properties, but the low conductivity still limits wider electronic applications. In this work, the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction are introduced to improve the conductivity of organohydrogels and their enhancement mechanism are studied in depth. The Hofmeister effect mainly influences the physical properties, such as the pore structure and mechanical strength, which subsequently impacts ion transfer during the solvent replacement process. The lithium and sodium bonds formed by the electrostatic interaction play a more important role in the conductivity of organohydrogels and an overall picture is presented based on the synergistic enhancement of the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction to achieve highly ionic conductive organohydrogels. The champion organohydrogels are applied as soft ionic conductors and antireflective layers in triboelectric, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric applications. The proposed mechanism advances the understanding of the contribution of ions to organohydrogels for wearable electronics. To reduce the decrease of the conductivity of organohydrogels caused by solvent replacement, the enhancement mechanism of the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction is investigated. Formation of stable lithium and sodium bonds by the electrostatic interaction plays important roles in keeping the conductivity of organohydrogels. The organohydrogels can be used in triboelectric, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:This paper explores fundamental mechanisms of negatively thermodynamic toughening during microphase separations of double network (DN) hydrogels, which have dynamically coordinating components with adjustable swelling behavior and designable multi-shape memory effect (multi-SME). Based on the Flory–Huggins theory and Fick’s second law, a thermodynamic model is formulated to study the diffusive dynamics, cooling-triggered multi-SME and mechanical toughness of the DN hydrogels. The negatively thermodynamic toughening effect of the DN hydrogels is strongly dependent on their water concentration, hydrophobic transition and microphase separation. Finally, effectiveness of this new model is demonstrated by applying it to predict dual-SME, quadruple-SME and cooling-triggered shape memory behaviors of DN hydrogels. This study provides a methodology for the design of shape memory DN hydrogels with tunable, giant and programmable cooling-triggered multi-SME.
Chaotropic Ions Mediated Polymer Gelation for Thermal Management

Abstract:Energy and environmental issues have increasingly garnered significant attention for sustainable development. Flexible and shape-stable phase change materials display great potential in regulation of environmental temperature for energy saving and human comfort. Here, inspired by the water absorption behavior of salt-tolerant animals and plants in salinity environment and the Hofmeister theory, highly stable phase change salogels (PCSGs) are fabricated through in situ polymerization of hydrophilic monomers in molten salt hydrates, which can serve multiple functions including thermal management patches, smart windows, and ice blocking coatings. The gelation principles of the polymer in high ion concentration solution are explored through the density functional theory simulation and verified the feasibility of four types of salt hydrates. The high concentration chaotropic ions strongly interacted with polymer chains and promoted the gelation at low polymer concentrations which derive highly-stable and ultra-moisturizing PCSGs with high latent heat (> 200 J g-1). The synergistic adhesion and transparency switching abilities accompanied with phase transition enable their smart thermal management. The study resolves the melting leakage and thermal cycling stability of salt hydrates, and open an avenue to fabricate flexible PCM of low cost, high latent heat, and long-term durability for energy-saving, ice-blocking, and thermal management.
Highly Strong, Tough, and Cryogenically Adaptive Hydrogel Ionic Conductors via Coordination Interactions

Abstract:Despite the promise of high flexibility and conformability of hydrogel ionic conductors, existing polymeric conductive hydrogels have long suffered from compromises in mechanical, electrical, and cryoadaptive properties due to monotonous functional improvement strategies, leading to lingering challenges. Here, we propose an all-in-one strategy for the preparation of poly(acrylic acid)/cellulose (PAA/Cel) hydrogel ionic conductors in a facile yet effective manner combining acrylic acid and salt-dissolved cellulose, in which abundant zinc ions simultaneously form strong coordination interactions with the two polymers, while free solute salts contribute to ionic conductivity and bind water molecules to prevent freezing. Therefore, the developed PAA/Cel hydrogel simultaneously achieved excellent mechanical, conductive, and cryogenically adaptive properties, with performances of 42.5 MPa for compressive strength, 1.6 MPa for tensile strength, 896.9% for stretchability, 9.2 MJ m-3 for toughness, 59.5 kJ m-2 for fracture energy, and 13.9 and 6.2 mS cm-1 for ionic conductivity at 25 and -70 °C, respectively. Enabled by these features, the resultant hydrogel ionic conductor is further demonstrated to be assembled as a self-powered electronic skin (e-skin) with high signal-to-noise ratio for use in monitoring movement and physiological signals regardless of cold temperatures, with hinting that could go beyond high-performance hydrogel ionic conductors.

Abstract:The ionic thermopower and thus the overall thermoelectric properties of ionogels can be significantly enhanced by cationic doping. The ionogels with cationic doping can exhibit an ionic thermpower of 43.8 mV K–1 and an ionic figure of merit (ZTi) of 6.1 which is the highest for ionic thermoelectric materials. Although ionic thermoelectric (iTE) materials can have very high thermopower, it is of great significance to develop novel methods to further improve the ionic thermopower and figure of merit (ZTi). Here, significant improvement in the thermopower and thus the ZTi value of an ionogel by cationic doping, is reported. Doping sodium dicyanamide (Na:DCA) into the ionogels of poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) and 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIM:DCA) that is an ionic liquid can greatly enhance the thermopower. This is attributed to the interactions between the doped Na+ cations and DCA– anions, thereby increasing the difference in the mobilities of EMIM+ cations and DCA– anions. Moreover, through the combination with the solid networks engineering by an anti‐solvent to PVDF‐HFP, the PVDF‐HFP/EMIM:DCA ionogel doped with 0.5 mol% Na+ with respect to EMIM+ exhibits an ionic thermopower of 43.8 ± 1.0 mV K–1, ionic conductivity of 19.4 ± 0.3 mS cm–1 and thermal conductivity of 0.183 W m–1 K–1 at the relative humidity of 85% and room temperature. The corresponding ZTi value thus reaches 6.1 ± 0.4, much higher than the previous ZTi records of iTE materials. These ionogels can be used in the iTE capacitors for the thermoelectric conversion.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels prepared from naturally abundant cellulose are ideal candidates for constructing flexible electronics from the perspective of commercialization and environmental sustainability. However, cellulosic hydrogels featuring both high mechanical strength and ionic conductivity remain extremely challenging to achieve because the ionic charge carriers tend to destroy the hydrogen-bonding network among cellulose. Here we propose a supramolecular engineering strategy to boost the mechanical performance and ionic conductivity of cellulosic hydrogels by incorporating bentonite (BT) via the strong cellulose-BT coordination interaction and the ion regulation capability of the nanoconfined cellulose-BT intercalated nanostructure. A strong (compressive strength up to 3.2 MPa), tough (fracture energy up to 0.45 MJ m −3 ), yet highly ionic conductive and freezing tolerant (high ionic conductivities of 89.9 and 25.8 mS cm −1 at 25 and −20 °C, respectively) all-natural cellulose-BT hydrogel is successfully realized. These findings open up new perspectives for the design of cellulosic hydrogels and beyond.
Hydrotalcite-Enhanced Tough and Strong Hydrogel Endowed by Coordination and Electrostatic Interactions for Both Strain and Pressure Sensors

Abstract:Polymer hydrogels have a wide range of applications in the field of flexible wearable devices from the perspective of easy commercialization and environmental compatibility. However, traditional hydrogels often fail to achieve adequate mechanical strength and performance such as toughness, resilience, and ionic conductivity. Herein, a significant enhancement of tensile strength in 2 orders of magnitude (from 36 kPa to 1.5 MPa) is obtained by the introduction of hydrotalcite into polymer network via multiple, multilevel, and strong interactions of strengthened interface interactions, and the enhancement effect is superior to most of known records. Meanwhile, the enhanced conductivity may be rationally attributed to effective channels of hydrotalcite for ion transport. As a result, high toughness (9.5 MJ/m3), stretchability (1520%), excellent resilience (100% rebound of 400% strain), high conductivity (2.6 mS/cm), and low-temperature resistance are successfully achieved. The work shows an efficient approach to design desired ultratough and multifunctional hydrogels.

Abstract:Thermosensitive hydrogels have found extensive applications in soft devices, but they often suffer from limited functionalities, low response rate and small response amplitude. In this work, double layered asymmetrical hydrogels composed of a thermosensitive layer and a non-thermosensitive layer are developed to simultaneously achieve high-performance mechanosensing and actuating properties in a single hydrogel. In thermosensitive layer, thermosensitive microgels are introduced to construct hierarchical structure, which accounts for the enhanced thermosensitive behaviors by cooperative responsiveness. In non-thermosensitive layer, poly(acrylamide- co -acrylic acid) (P(AM- co -AA)) hydrogel is constructed. KCl is introduced as conductive component. Mechanosensors for monitoring various mechanical stimuli in daily life have been fabricated utilizing such hydrogels and high gauge factors (GF) have been achieved, 0.38 for resistive strain sensors, 9.40 kPa −1 for piezoresistive pressure sensors and 3.92 kPa −1 for capacitive pressure sensors. Because of the asymmetrical structure, such hydrogels also exhibit outstanding actuating properties with a fast response rate of 863°/min and a bending amplitude about 360°. Interestingly, grasping-releasing of target objects utilizing an octopus-shaped hydrogel actuator and temperature alerting based on hydrogel actuator are also demonstrated. Overall, the double layered asymmetrical ionic hydrogels have provided a new clue to construct hydrogel devices with multiple functionalities and enhanced response properties.

Abstract:Molecular weight distribution (MWD) is an intrinsic character of synthetic polymers and influences many properties of polymeric materials. In this work, the effects of MWD on thermogelation of an amphiphilic block copolymer in water were studied mainly by a dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. Molar mass dispersity D̵M, defined as weight-average molecular weight Mw over number-average molecular weight Mn, was found to be a key molecular parameter to influence the existence of sol–gel transition or the phase transition temperature if gellable. We also demonstrated that such a D̵M effect in a selective solvent was closely related to the formation of micelles, particularly to the thickness of micellar corona. We revealed that the thermogelation of the polydispersed macromolecules resulted from the synergism among chains of different lengths leading to a percolated network of semibald micelles. The effect of D̵M of hydrophobic blocks and that of hydrophilic blocks on thermogelation were compared and analyzed. By combining the simulation results with the previous experimental results about triblock copolymer PLGA–PEG–PLGA in water [PEG: poly(ethylene glycol); PLGA: poly(lactide-co-glycolide)], we proposed a D̵M–Mw diagram for design of the thermogellable copolymers. Dynamic and structural studies on synergetic energy dissipation mechanisms of single-, double-, and triple-network hydrogels sequentially crosslinked by multiple non-covalent interactions

Abstract:A combination of multiple non-covalent interactions has been used to fabricate strong and tough hydrogels. However, mechanisms behind toughening remain unclear. In this study, a series of single-network (SN), double network (DN), and triple network (TN) hydrogels sequentially crosslinked by chemical bonds, freeze-thawed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) crystallites, and ion coordination of alginate chains are systematically prepared. The contributions of hydrogen bonding, entanglements, crystallite crosslinking, and ion coordination to the dynamics of the hydrogels are comparatively studied. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals the apparent activation energy of hydrogen bonding from 41.1 kJ/mol to 50.6, 56.8, and 65.5 kJ/mol for SN gels with increasing PVA concentration (from 0 to 2, 6, 10 wt/vol%, respectively), whereas the corresponding apparent activation energy of chain entanglements increases from 148.3 to 160.2, 163.5, and 167.0 kJ/mol. PVA crystallites formed upon freeze-thawing act as physical crosslinks to further improve the strength and toughness of gels, as well as the activation energy (251.7 kJ/mol). Subsequent ion coordination with alginate further enhances the activation energy to 304.7kJ/mol (Cu2+), 309.3kJ/mol (Fe3+). Structural evolution studies on pre-cracked hydrogels reveal that PVA crystallites render crack blunting upon stretching. Polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy reveal the rearrangement and reconstruction of internal structures during crack propagation, including orientation and alignment of PVA crystallites. This study provides first insights to synergetic energy dissipation by non-covalent interactions of multi-network hydrogels.

Abstract:Dipole-dipole and hydrogen-bonding interaction reinforced (DHIR) hydrogels that demonstrate both excellent thermo-responsive volume change and high mechanical strength have been developed. Their thermo-responsive volume change originates from the balance between the temperature-sensitive reversible dipole-dipole and H-bonding interaction and an embedded super-hydrophilic component. By integrating these thermal responsive DHIR hydrogels with non-swelling polyurethane (PU) hydrogels, bilayered (DHIR-PU) thermomorphic actuators capable of shape transformation have been fabricated. The hybrid DHIR-PU hydrogels have a wide temperature window allowing dual-responsive actuations to be achieved. The new hydrogel-based actuators are highly attractive materials for a range of transformative applications in soft robotics, medical devices and advanced manufacturing.
