Abstract:Electroluminescence in light-emitting devices relies on the encounter and radiative recombination of electrons and holes in the emissive layer. In organometal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes, poor film formation creates electrical shunting paths, where injected charge carriers bypass the perovskite emitter, leading to a loss in electroluminescence yield. Here, we report a solution-processing method to block electrical shunts and thereby enhance electroluminescence quantum efficiency in perovskite devices. In this method, a blend of perovskite and a polyimide precursor dielectric (PIP) is solution-deposited to form perovskite nanocrystals in a thin-film matrix of PIP. The PIP forms a pinhole-free charge-blocking layer, while still allowing the embedded perovskite crystals to form electrical contact with the electron and hole-injection layers. This modified structure reduces nonradiative current losses and improves quantum efficiency by 2 orders of magnitude, giving an external quantum efficiency of 1.2%. This simple technique provides an alternative route to circumvent film formation problems in perovskite optoelectronics and offers the possibility of flexible and high-performance light-emitting displays.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have drawn significant interest in the past decade. Superior optoelectronic properties, such as a narrow bandwidth, precise and facile tunable luminance over the entire visible spectrum, and high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to ≈100%, render metal halide perovskites suitable for next-generation high-definition displays and healthy lighting systems. The external quantum efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) increases from 0.1 to 11.7% in three years; however, the energy conversion efficiency and the long-term stability of perovskite LEDs are inadequate for practical application. Strategies to optimize the emitting layer and the device structure, with respect to material design, synthesis, surface passivation, and device optimization, are reviewed and highlighted. The long-term stability of perovskite LEDs is evaluated as well. Meanwhile, several challenges and prospects for future development of perovskite materials and LEDs are identified.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising for next-generation high-definition displays, especially in light of their tunable bandgaps, high color purities, and high carrier mobility. Within the past few years, the external quantum efficiency of perovskite nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes has progressed rapidly, reaching the standard for commercial applications. However, the low operational stability of these perovskite nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes remains a crucial issue for their industrial development. Recent experimental evidence indicates that the migration of ionic species is the primary factor giving rise to the performance degradation of perovskite nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes, and ion migration is closely related to the defects on the surface of perovskite nanocrystals and at the grain boundaries of their thin films. In this review, we focus on the central idea of surface reconstruction of perovskite nanocrystals, discuss the influence of surface defects on halide ion migration, and summarize recent advances in resurfacing perovskite nanocrystal strategies toward mitigating halide ion migration to improve the stability of the as-fabricated light-emitting diode devices. From the perspective of perovskite nanocrystal resurfacing, we set out a promising research direction for improving both the spectral and operational stability of perovskite nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Despite the well-established defect tolerance of metal halide perovskites (MHPs), there are multiple sources of defects in MHPs, such as grain boundaries in thin films, colloidal nanocrystal surfaces, and a heterointerface formed with the charge-transport layer, all of which play a crucial role in determining the efficiency and stability of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Defect passivation strategies have become essential tools for improving device performance. Here, we analyzed and correlated the origins of the defects in MHPs to their influence on the optical and charge-carrier transport properties and systematically reviewed mechanistic principles of promising passivation strategies to either eliminate or suppress various defects that undermine the potential of perovskite LEDs. Several challenges and prospects for the future development of MHP LEDs have been identified. This review could provide a valuable reference for the community to promote the optimization and stabilization for developing high-performance MHP LEDs and further uncover the potential of MHPs for optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) possess high photoluminescence quantum yields, tunable emission spectra with high color purity, high defect tolerance and facile preparation processing, which are demonstrated as promising electroluminescent emitters in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for next-generation displays and solid-state lighting applications. With tremendous efforts devoted to improving the lumi-nescent properties of PQDs along with optimizing the device operation of relevant LEDs, prominent breakthroughs are accomplished in boosting the device efficiency of PQD-LEDs that the PQD-LEDs with maximum external quantum efficiencies of over 23% are achieved for green and red PQD-LED devices. However, the further development of light-emitting devices upon PQDs is confronted with significant challenges, which places severe limitations on their practical application in displays and lighting tech-nologies. Herein, this review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion of recent advances towards high-performance PQD-LEDs, including the progress in preparation modification, surface engineering and composition regulation of PQDs, as well as the device architecture optimization of PQD-LEDs. Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have been in the limelight in recent years due to their enormous potential for use in optoelectronic devices, owing to their unique combination of properties, such as high absorption coefficient, long charge-carrier diffusion lengths, and high defect tolerance. Perovskite-based solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have achieved remarkable breakthroughs in a comparatively short amount of time. As of writing, a certified power conversion efficiency of 22.7% and an external quantum efficiency of over 10% have been achieved for perovskite solar cells and LEDs, respectively. Interfaces and defects have a critical influence on the properties and operational stability of metal halide perovskite optoelectronic devices. Therefore, interface and defect engineering are crucial to control the behavior of the charge carriers and to grow high quality, defect-free perovskite crystals. Herein, a comprehensive review of various strategies that attempt to modify the interfacial characteristics, control the crystal growth, and understand the defect physics in metal halide perovskites, for both solar cell and LED applications, is presented. Lastly, based on the latest advances and breakthroughs, perspectives and possible directions forward in a bid to transcend what has already been achieved in this vast field of metal halide perovskite optoelectronic devices are discussed.

Ions-induced Epitaxial Growth of Perovskite Nanocomposites for Highly Efficient Light-Emitting Diodes with EQE Exceeding 30%

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites, a class of cost-effective semiconductor materials, are of great interest for modern and upcoming display technologies that prioritize the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with high efficiency and excellent color purity. The prevailing approach to achieving efficient luminescence from pervoskites is enhancing exciton binding effect and confining carriers by reducing their dimensionality or grain size. However, splitting pervoskite lattice into smaller ones generates abundant boundaries in solid films and results in more surface trap states, needing exact passivation to suppress trap-assisted nonradiative losses. Here, an ions-induced heteroepitaxial growth method is employed to assembe perovskite lattices with different structures into large-sized grains to produce lattice-anchored nanocomposites for efficient LEDs with high color purity. This approach enables the nanocomposite thin films, composed of three-dimensional (3D) CsPbBr3 and its variant of zero-dimensional (0D) Cs4PbBr6, to feature significant low trap-assisted nonradiative recombination, enhanced light out-coupling with a corrugated surface, and well-balanced charge carrier transport. Based on the resultant 3D/0D perovskite nanocomposites, we demonstrate the perovskite LEDs achieving an remarkable external quantum efficiency of 31.0% at the emission peak of 521 nm with a narrow full width at half-maximum of only 18 nm. This research introduces a novel approach to the development of well-assembled nanocomposites for perovskite LEDs, demonstrating high efficiency comparable to that of state-of-the-art organic LEDs.

Abstract:Lead‐halide perovskites (LHPs), in the form of both colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) and thin films, have emerged over the past decade as leading candidates for next‐generation, efficient light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells. Owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), LHPs efficiently convert injected charge‐carriers to light and vice versa . However, despite the defect‐tolerance of LHPs, defects at the surface of colloidal NCs and at grain boundaries in thin films play a critical role in charge‐carrier transport and non‐radiative recombination, which lowers PLQYs, device efficiency and stability. Therefore, understanding the defects that play a key role in limiting performance, and developing effective passivation routes is critical for achieving advances in performance, and therefore features at the forefront of perovskite research. This review presents the current understanding of the defects in perovskites (both colloidal NCs and thin films) and their influence on the optical and charge‐carrier transport properties. The review also discusses the passivation strategies toward improving the efficiencies of perovskite‐based LEDs and solar cells.

Abstract:Metal-halide perovskites have garnered considerable research attention as highly efficient light emitters in recent years due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties with remarkable tunability and excellent solution processabilities. Substantial advancements have been achieved in the development of novel halide perovskites, and the exploitations of these materials in light-emitting devices. This review comprehensively outlines recent breakthroughs in metal-halide perovskites, encompassing the rational design of perovskite materials with tunable light emission properties, the controllable growth of single crystal for a deeper understanding of their structure–property relationships, as well as the fundamental insights into the photophysics and carrier dynamics in perovskite systems. Additionally, it provides an overview of recent applications of perovskite materials in high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers.

Abstract:Optically pumped white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), consisting of blue/ultraviolet LED chips and down conversion phosphors, have a wide range of applications in our daily life, such as full color display and solid-state lighting. While remarkable progress in light quality, device efficiency, and lifetime has been achieved during the last two decades, many challenges remain in optically pumped WLEDs, and searching for low cost high performance down conversion phosphors is still of great interest. Recently, metal halide perovskites have emerged as a highly promising new generation of light emitters for their exceptional optical properties with high quantum efficiencies and color tunability, which have also inspired researchers to investigate their derivatives. In this perspective, we briefly review the progress during the last few years in the development of metal halide perovskites and perovskite-related materials as down conversion phosphors for optically pumped WLEDs. We also highlight some major issues and challenges that need to be addressed to enable perovskite-based light emitters to possibly replace currently used rare-earth doped inorganic phosphors and quantum dots.

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes based on lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) have shown an astonishing increase in efficiency in just several years of academic research, reaching high external quantum efficiencies exceeded 20%. The extensively color-tunability and narrow emission bandwidth of LHP NCs, in particular, are of great importance in the creation of the next generation of ultra-high-definition displays, as defined by the Rec. 2020 standard recommendation. In fact, whereas the colour of LHP NCs can be easily tuned by the compositions of halogens, the ion migration in mixed-halide perovskites under the electric field will seriously affect the spectral stability and operational lifetimes of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Therefore, it is an essential part to realize efficient colour-saturated PeLEDs based on single-halide perovskite NCs. In this review, we focus on the recent progresses of LHP NC-based PeLEDs and highlight the strategy of tuning the spectral emission based on the quantum confinement or cation alloying/doping in single-halide perovskite NCs. Finally, we will give an outlook of future research avenues for preparing high-efficiency pure green, red and blue PeLEDs based on single-halide perovskite NCs.

Abstract:Abstract Here we provide a comprehensive review of a newly developed lighting technology based on metal halide perovskites (i.e. perovskite light-emitting diodes) encompassing the research endeavours into materials, photophysics and device engineering. At the outset we survey the basic perovskite structures and their various dimensions (namely three-, two- and zero-dimensional perovskites), and demonstrate how the compositional engineering of these structures affects the perovskite light-emitting properties. Next, we turn to the physics underpinning photo- and electroluminescence in these materials through their connection to the fundamental excited states, energy/charge transport processes and radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In the remainder of the review, we focus on the engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes, including the history of their development as well as an extensive analysis of contemporary strategies for boosting device performance. Key concepts include balancing the electron/hole injection, suppression of parasitic carrier losses, improvement of the photoluminescence quantum yield and enhancement of the light extraction. Overall, this review reflects the current paradigm for perovskite lighting, and is intended to serve as a foundation to materials and device scientists newly working in this field.

Abstract:<p>Metal halide perovskites have attracted considerable interest for their potential applications in high‐definition displays owing to their narrowband emission, wide color gamut (≈140%), near‐unity photoluminescence efficiency, and cost‐effective solution processability. Extensive efforts have led to the external quantum efficiency of state‐of‐the‐art perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) to exceed 20%. However, there are several obstacles, such as poor working stability, low efficiency, and low luminance, of pure‐blue and pure‐red light‐emitting devices that delay their commercial application. Addressing these issues requires a deep understanding of the photoluminescence effect as well as the bottlenecks in the process. Here, the fundamental working principle, carrier recombination, and light outcoupling properties of PeLEDs are described. The performance improvement strategies of PeLEDs based on defect engineering, perovskite crystallization, charge injection balancing, and quantum confinement are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges of PeLEDs in pure‐color light emission, working stability, and toxicity are reviewed and discussed.</p>
