Abstract:Metamaterialsare electromagnetic composites constructed by subwavelength sized microstructures, and thus can exhibit tailored effective permittivity and permeability. Effective-medium theory (EMT) plays a crucial role since it serves as a bridge to link theories, which are frequently conducted on model hypothetical systems, and experiments which are always performed on realistic metamaterial systems with complex microstructures. Therefore, a good EMT, which can precisely predict the effective parameters of complex metamaterials, is always highly desired. Based on a mode-expansion theory under single-mode approximation, we derived the scatterings parameters for a general one-dimensional photonic grating composed by two different materials, and then established an effective-medium theory (EMT) for such a composite using the derived scatterings parameters. Our EMT well describes the gating structures with general material and geometrical parameters, and recovers previous two formulas which are valid only at certain limiting conditions. The theory is justified by full wave simulations and microwave experiments. Then we generalize our theory into two-dimensional case. Mapping such an inhomogeneous system to an effective homogeneous medium exhibiting the same scattering coefficients, we established an effective medium theory for an array of subwavelength cylinders. Our theory is justified by comparing with full wave simulations on realistic structures, and is found to work well in a much more expanded parameter space than the standard Maxwell-Garnett theory.

Abstract:Mapping a planar conductor with arbitrary electronic band structure (e. g., linear or parabolic) to a slab of bulk medium exhibiting the same optical responses, we formulated an equivalent-medium approach to study the optical properties of metamaterials (MTMs) made by patterning such a planar conductor, particularly for the graphene system. The theory was applied to study various graphene-based MTMs, with calculation results in one particular system (with no adjustable parameters) agreeing well with available experiments. Abstract:We show that a metallic waveguide behaves as an electric (magnetic) plasma for transverse-electric (transverse-magnetic) polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves at frequencies below cutoff value. Inserting anisotropic resonance structures of either electric or magnetic type into a waveguide, we find extraordinary transmissions of EM waves with different polarizations through the waveguide at frequencies well below the waveguide's cutoff value, following two different mechanisms. Microwave experiments, in excellent agreements with finite-different-time-domain simulations, are performed to demonstrate all theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this work is to develop a computational paradigm for performance analysis of low-frequency electromagnetic devices containing both magnetic metamaterials (MTMs) and natural media. Design/methodology/approach A time domain finite element method (TDFEM) is proposed. The electromagnetic properties of the MTMs are modeled by a nonstandard Lorentz model. The time domain governing equation is derived by converting the one from the frequency domain into the time domain based on the Laplace transform and convolution. The backward difference is used for the temporal discretization. An auxiliary variable is introduced to derive the recursive formula. Findings The numerical results show good agreements between the time domain solutions and the frequency domain solutions. The error convergence trajectory of the proposed TDFEM conforms to the first-order accuracy. Originality/value To the best knowledge of the authors, the presented work is the first one focusing on TDFEMs for low-frequency near fields computations of MTMs. Consequently, the proposed TDFEM greatly benefits the future explorations and performance evaluations of MTM-based near field devices and systems in low-frequency electrical and electronic engineering.

Abstract:Spatial-dispersion (nonlocal) effects are non-negligible in periodic multilayered metamaterials under certain specific conditions, which cannot be completely understood based on the local effective-medium theory, even though the metamaterials are constructed by deep subwavelength meta-atoms. Here, we present a simple yet robust effective-medium model for such media in which the nonlocal effects are properly considered. Our proposed nonlocal model is established by the analysis of the dispersion relation of the effective medium without any expansion-based approximation, which is applicable for description of the optical behavior of the multilayered metamaterials even under critical conditions, and works well for both TE and TM polarized waves. We believe our model will be a powerful tool for the investigation of electromagnetic nonlocality in the realm of metamaterials and subwavelength optics.

Abstract:Although many effective-medium theories have been proposed for studying metamaterials, most of them do not work well for multilayer metamaterials with small interlayer distances. Based on rigorous mode-expansion analyses on a model system consisting of multiple layers of subwavelength gratings, we identify that the failures of conventional effective-medium theories are caused by neglecting strong near-field couplings in homogenizing such systems. These understandings motive us to propose an alternative homogenization approach for strongly coupled multilayer metamaterials, in which predominant near-field corrections have been considered automatically. Our effective-medium theory can well describe multilayer metamaterials with arbitrary interlayer distances including particularly those systems for which conventional effective-medium theories fail. We finally extend our theory to multilayer metamaterials with complicated microstructures and validate the theory by full-wave simulations as well as microwave experiments. Our theory not only well complements the available effective-medium theory formalisms, but also provides a powerful tool to study the properties of strongly coupled metamaterials, which may find many applications in practice.

Abstract:We have developed an effective-medium theory within the coherent-potential approximation, which is especially suitable to retrieve the effective constitutive parameters (permittivity and permeability) of the anisotropic magnetic metamaterials consisting of the ferrite rods. The anisotropy originates from the gyromagnetic property of the ferrite material whose permeability is a tensor with nonzero off-diagonal components. To confirm the validity of our method the photonic band structures of the two-dimensional periodic magnetic metamaterials are calculated, which are in agreement with the effective-medium theory in the long wavelength limit, in addition, even when $a/{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{0}\ensuremath{\sim}0.4$ the effective-medium theory can still be applied, where $a$ and ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{0}$ are the lattice constant and the vacuum wavelength, respectively. The simulations on the electric field patterns for a plane wave illuminated on the magnetic metamaterials and the equal-size effective scattering objects are performed, the results corroborate the effectiveness of the effective-medium theory once again. We also perform the simulation for the metamaterial composed of disordered ferrite rods, which is still in agreement with the effective-medium theory, suggesting the powerfulness of the effective-medium theory. Moreover, our results suggest that the anisotropy must be considered exactly in order to retrieve the effective constitutive parameters accurately.

Abstract:Under the generalized coherent-potential approximation, we established a "quasimode" theory to study the effective-medium properties of electromagnetic metamaterials. With this theory, we calculate the self-energy, density of states (DOS), and mean-free paths for optical modes traveling inside a metamaterial, and then determine the effective permittivity and permeability of the metamaterial by maximizing the DOS function. Compared with the traditional methods for calculating effective-medium parameters, the present approach could provide quantitative judgments on how meaningful are the obtained effective-medium parameters. As illustrations, we employed the theory to study the effective-medium properties of several examples including finite metallic wires and split ring resonators.

Abstract:We present a formulation for deriving effective medium properties of infinitely periodic two-dimensional metamaterial lattice structures beyond the static and quasi-static limits. We utilize the multipole expansions, where the polarization currents associated with the supported Bloch modes are expressed via the electric dipole, magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments per unit length. We then propose a method to calculate the Bloch modes based on the lattice geometry and individual unit element structure. The results revert to well-known formulas in the quasistatic limit and are useful for the homogenization of nanorod-type metamaterials which are frequently used in optical applications.

Effective medium theory for anisotropic metamaterials

Abstract:We present an effective medium theory that can predict the effective permittivity and permeability of a geometrically anisotropic two-dimensional metamaterial composed with a rectangular array of elliptical cylinders. It is possible to obtain a closed-form analytical solution for the anisotropic effective medium parameters if the aspect ratio of the lattice and the eccentricity of elliptical cylinder satisfy certain conditions. The derived effective medium theory can recover the well-known Maxwell-Garnett results in the quasi-static regime. More importantly, it is valid beyond the long-wavelength limit, where the wavelength in the host medium is comparable to the size of the lattice so that previous anisotropic effective medium theories fail. The validity of the derived effective medium theory is verified by band structure calculations. A real sample of a recent theoretically proposed anisotropic medium with near-zero index to control flux is achieved from the derived effective medium theory and control of electromagnetic waves in the sample is clearly demonstrated. The accuracy of the theory is further systematically studied as material and geometric parameter varies, and we find the derived effective medium theory applies over a large range in the parameter space. Such applicability greatly broadens the applicable realm of the effective medium theory and opens many vistas in the design of structures with desired anisotropic material characteristics.

Abstract:Magnetic metamaterials exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties and have shown great potential in low-frequency near-field electromagnetic applications. A near-field device or system is consisted of different natural media and low-frequency metamaterials, and it is essential to develop a numerical methodology to compute the transient response of such a device or system. However, most existing works are dedicated to high-frequency metamaterials and wave propagation problems, whereas the study of numerical methodology for low-frequency metamaterials in magnetoquasistatic (MQS) fields is still blank and challenging. In this regard, a time-domain finite-element method (TDFEM) is first derived for MQS field applications of low-frequency metamaterials. The metamaterials are modeled as continuous media and approximated by a nonstandard Lorentz dispersion equation. The formulas to handle dispersive media in near field are derived based on the auxiliary equation method. The proposed method is validated in a 2-D axisymmetric case study by comparing its results with those of frequency-domain computations.

Abstract:Metamaterials (MTMs) are very promising in engineering applications because they can be used to easily manipulate the spatial and temporal distributions of electromagnetic fields and waves. Nevertheless, studies on MTMs have been directed primarily toward high-frequency electromagnetics and optics. Consequently, the development and applications for MTMs in low-frequency electromagnetics still face some bottleneck problems and challenges. For example, deteriorated resonance strength and large unit dimensions are inevitable for low-frequency MTM unit cells. Moreover, the existing analytical, computational, and experimental methodologies for MTMs are not applicable for low-frequency cases. To address these problems, one-dimensional compact stacking miniaturized MTM bulk in the kHz frequency band, which is the lowest resonance frequency for passive MTMs reported to date in the literature, is proposed and fabricated. This work develops a miniaturized and high performance low-frequency MTM unit cell using a unit topology that consists of two spiral structures connected with a via and a lumped chip capacitor. A numerical model is proposed for performance simulations of the MTM unit cell, and a quality factor equivalence-based method is introduced. An experimental–numerical methodology is developed to extract the complex permeability of the MTM bulk. Comprehensive numerical computations and experimental studies significantly impact the investigation of the extraordinary performance of MTM-based near-field electromagnetic devices. Both numerical and experimental results have confirmed the feasibility and applicability of the presented work, which reveals the extraordinary physical properties of novel MTM-based electromagnetic devices.
Effective Electrodynamics Theory for the Hyperbolic Metamaterial Consisting of Metal–Dielectric Layers

Abstract:In this work, we study the dynamical behaviors of the electromagnetic fields and material responses in the hyperbolic metamaterial consisting of periodically arranged metallic and dielectric layers. The thickness of each unit cell is assumed to be much smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic waves, so the effective medium concept can be applied. When electromagnetic (EM) fields are present, the responses of the medium in the directions parallel to and perpendicular to the layers are similar to those of Drude and Lorentz media, respectively. We derive the time-dependent energy density of the EM fields and the power loss in the effective medium based on Poynting theorem and the dynamical equations of the polarization field. The time-averaged energy density for harmonic fields was obtained by averaging the energy density in one period, and it reduces to the standard result for the lossless dispersive medium when we turn off the loss. A numerical example is given to reveal the general characteristics of the direction-dependent energy storage capacity of the medium. We also show that the Lagrangian density of the system can be constructed. The Euler–Lagrange equations yield the correct dynamical equations of the electromagnetic fields and the polarization field in the medium. The canonical momentum conjugates to every dynamical field can be derived from the Lagrangian density via differentiation or variation with respect to that field. We apply Legendre transformation to this system and find that the resultant Hamiltonian density is identical to the energy density up to an irrelevant divergence term. This coincidence implies the correctness of the energy density formula we obtained before. We also give a brief discussion about the Hamiltonian dynamics description of the system. The Lagrangian description and Hamiltonian formulation presented in this paper can be further developed for studying the elementary excitations or quasiparticles in other hyperbolic metamaterials.

Abstract:The Euler–Lagrange method is proposed for the rigorous modeling of low-frequency metamaterial (MTM) slabs in near field systems. The mechanisms of the extraordinary performance-enhancing capabilities of MTM slabs in near field systems are analyzed in numerical studies. The proposed method is verified by experimental studies of a prototype MTM-coil system. This work focuses on low-frequency MTM slabs and enables rigorous, flexible, and feasible analysis of MTM-based near field systems in electrical engineering.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a modeling method for the analysis of low-frequency metamaterials (MTMs) and their near-field applications.Design/methodology/approachThe Euler–Lagrange method is introduced. An MTM is modeled as a multi-degree-of-freedom system without homogenization. The properties and the responses of the MTM in a near-field device are readily and rigorously studied through the motion equation derived from the Lagrange equations. The resonance frequencies and the corresponding resonance modes are solved from the characteristic equation.FindingsThe numerical results of the proposed method show good agreement with the experimental ones. A measurement of MTM-core coil resistance and inductance shows high accuracy of the proposed method.Originality/valueThe proposed Euler–Lagrange method provides a new study perspective and enables more flexible, rigorous and straightforward analysis of low-frequency MTMs in near-field applications. Consequently, the presented work greatly facilitates further explorations and studies on various novel MTM-based low-frequency near-field devices and systems.

Abstract:Abstract Dynamic mechanical metamaterials (MMs) are artificial media composed of periodic micro-structures, designed to manipulate wave propagation. Modeling and designing MMs can be computationally demanding due to the broad design space spanned by the geometric and material parameters. This work aims to develop a generalized reduced order modeling approach for determining MM dynamics in low frequency ranges with accuracy and speed, using a limited number of parameters and small matrices. The MM unit cells are treated as assemblies of structural elements with discrete degrees-of-freedom, whose effective stiffness and inertia are determined by optimizing energy criteria based on continuum results derived from a small number of eigen-study simulations. This proposed approach offers a parameterized and discretized representation of MM systems, which leads to fast and accurate computation of eigen-study results for periodic arrays, as well as dynamic responses in time domain for finite-sized arrays. The high computational efficiency and physical accuracy of this method will help streamline the modeling process and aid in design discovery and optimization, especially in combination with machine learning and data-driven techniques.

Abstract:We derive the electromagnetic medium equivalent to a collection of all-dielectric nano-particles (enjoying high refractive indices) distributed locally non-periodically in a smooth domain $\Omega$. Such distributions are used to model well known structures in material sciences as the Van-der-Waals heterostructures. Since the nano-particles are all-dielectric, then the permittivity remains unchanged while the permeability is altered by this effective medium. This equivalent medium describes, in particular, the effective medium of 2 dimensional type Van-der-Waals heterostructures. These structures are 3 dimensional which are build as superposition of identical (2D)-sheets each supporting locally non-periodic distributions of nano-particles. An explicit form of this effective medium is provided for the particular case of honeycomb heterostructures.

Abstract:The effective medium representation is fundamental in providing a performance-to-design approach for many devices based on metamaterials. While there are recent works in extending the effective medium concept into the temporal domain, experimental implementation remains an open challenge. Here, we construct an acoustic metamaterial dynamically switching between two different resonance strengths with a time-varying convolution kernel, which can now incorporate both frequency dispersion of metamaterials and temporal modulation. We establish the effective medium formula in temporally averaging the compressibilities, densities, and even Willis coupling parameters of the two configurations. A phase delay between the modulation of different atoms is found to have a negligible effect on the effective medium. Our realization enables a high-level description of metamaterials in the spatiotemporal domain, making many recent proposals, such as magnet-free nonreciprocity, inverse prism, and parametric amplification using space-time metamaterials, possible for implementation in the future.

Practical Model for Metamaterials in Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Abstract:Metamaterials (MTMs) with extraordinary electromagnetic properties are recently applied to wireless power transfer (WPT) systems to improve power transmission efficiency. Although theoretical progress has been made on MTMs in low frequency near field, in the operation frequency of most WPT systems (usually MHz), the design of MTMs still utilizes the model used in high-frequency applications. Therefore, a practical model of MTMs in low MHz band is proposed in this work. The resonance frequency and quality factor are used to describe the characteristics of an MTM slab. The near field WPT systems with MTMs are then modeled as electric circuits, the system efficiency is explicitly deduced, and optimization algorithms are employed to optimize the MTM resonance frequency and maximize the system efficiency. The proposed practical model is validated via a prototype wireless power transfer system operating at 6.78 MHz. Experiments show that the proposed MTM model has good accuracy for low MHz WPT systems compared with the high-frequency model. The proposed practical model of MTMs provides an accurate way to analyze the performance of MTM at low MHz frequencies and greatly benefits the future exploitation of MTM-based low-frequency near field applications.
