Abstract:The use of supported metal-based heterogeneous catalysts is very ubiquitous in the modern chemical industry. Although high reactivity has been achieved, conventional supported metal-based heterogeneous catalysts commonly face the problem of rapid deactivation, generally involving leaching, poisoning or sintering of the active metal species, which is particularly serious in various solid acid catalysis processes. To overcome these drawbacks, different strategies have been adopted, including strengthening metal-support interactions, confining metal species in various porous materials, or coating the active metal nanoparticles with thin shells, which may generate effective metal-based nanocomposite catalysts with enhanced stability. In this feature article, we summarize our recent work on the design of some metal-based nanocomposites possessing yolk-shell, core-shell or other confined structures for enhanced catalytic applications in several important acid catalysis reactions, such as cycloaddition of CO2, epoxidation of olefins, acylation of aromatic compounds, and transesterification/carbonylation synthesis of organic carbonates. More attention is paid to the design and preparation strategy of metal-based nanocomposite catalysts, which can generate unique catalytically active and stable metal sites for meeting the tough requirements of a specific catalytic reaction. Finally, the existing challenges and the future directions for metal-based nanocomposite catalysts with respect to the preparation strategies and catalytic application prospects are proposed.

Abstract:Metal-oxide anodes represent a significant future direction for advanced lithium ion batteries. However, their practical applications are still seriously hampered by electrode disintegration and capacity fading during cycling. Here, we report a rational design of 3D-staggered metal-oxide nanocomposite electrode directly fabricated by pulsed spray evaporation chemical vapor deposition, where various oxide nanocomponents are in a staggered distribution uniformly along three dimensions and across the whole electrode. Such a special design of nanoarchitecture combines the advantages of nanoscale materials in volume change and Li+/electron conduction as well as uniformly staggered and compact structure in atom migration during lithiation/delithiation, which exhibits high specific capacity, good cycling stability and excellent rate capability. The rational design of metal-oxide nanocomposite electrode opens up new possibilities for high performance lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 )-based nanocomposites, as a branch of nanocomposites, are always constructed from CeO 2 combining with other constituents, which exhibit enhanced performance and excellent stability due to their inherent synergistic systems. The modulation of morphology, size, and types of doping of active metals can be achieved by designing the structures, which providing the opportunity to construct diverse CeO 2 -based nanocomposites. The optimization of the structure enables the design of new multifunctional CeO 2 -based nanocomposites for various applications such as the field of catalysis. In this minireview, we describe the recent development of the nanocomposites based on noble metal-, transition metal-, and metal-organic framework (MOF)-CeO 2 , which are synthesized through various scientific and rational methods. Meanwhile, the design, synthesis, and basic working principles for CeO 2 -based nanocomposites are also elucidated. In addition, some examples of their catalytic applications such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis are also discussed. Finally, the structure—activity relationship in guiding the design and synthesis of CeO 2 -based nanocomposites is summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Rational design of stable nanocatalysts Sintering of nanoparticles is one of the main causes of their catalytic deactivation. Rational design of nanocatalysts that are stable against sintering is a grand challenge in heterogenous catalysis. Hu et al . present kinetic theories for two competing sintering mechanisms, Ostwald ripening and particle migration, which relate the rates of both processes to fundamental interaction energies in metal nanoparticle-support combinations. Using kinetic simulations for hundreds of such pairs, the authors show a universal volcano dependence of the sintering kinetics on the metal-support binding energy that can serve as a single descriptor to predict nanoparticle growth rates. The revealed scaling relations are a good start in the development of high-throughput screening computational approaches to drive discovery of sintering-resistant nanocatalysts. —YS

Abstract:High-performance electrocatalysts are required because the sluggish kinetics of Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) at the cathode in either Fuel Cell (FC) or Metal-Air Battery (MAB). The current most effective ORR catalysts are noble Pt-group metals, whose high price and low abundance severely hamper the widespread application of FC and MAB. Dispersively non-noble transition metal coordinated with nitrogen atoms doped in carbon nanomaterials (M-N-C) Single Atom Catalysts (SACs) have been considered as the most promising catalysts for the ORR. Here, the effect of typical morphology on the activity and stability of SACs was discussed firstly. Moreover, the effect of metal type, coordination nitrogen number, heteroatom decoration on the central metal atom were discussed. Based on the rate determining step (RDS), we propose the ideal characters that high-performance SACs should possess.

Abstract:Ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs) exhibit excellent catalytic activity and selectivity. However, they tend to aggregate into large particles during synthesis and catalysis due to high surface free energy. Aiming to break out of this dilemma, zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have proved to be ideal substrates for stabilizing the ultrafine metal nanostructures. The stabilizing mode includes confining MNPs inside their pore structures and converting intrinsic metal nodes into coordinately unsaturated metal sites (i.e., ZIF‐confined metal catalysts). Furthermore, various MNPs and ADMSs can also be immobilized into ZIF‐derived porous carbon through high‐temperature pyrolysis (i.e., ZIF‐derived carbon‐supported metal catalysts). In brief, ZIFs and their derivatives have gradually emerged as good platforms for designing metal catalysts at nanoscale and even atomic level. In this review, recent progress in the structural analysis and synthetic strategies of metal catalysts supported by ZIFs and their derivatives is presented. Besides, current challenges and future directions of atomically dispersed metal catalysts are discussed. This article will provide valuable insights into rational design of metal catalysts with exquisite nanostructure and high catalytic performance to meet further material requirements in the catalytic field.

Abstract:Mesoporous support-encapsulated fine-size metal nanoclusters hold great potential for catalytic applications by virtue of their high reactivity and fast mass transport kinetics but suffer greatly from particle aggregation and/or sintering, especially under high reaction temperatures. Here, we report an inner surface-confinement strategy to stabilize a variety of ultrafine metal nanoclusters (M = Pt, Pd, Ni, and Ag) inside mesoporous silica supports. The strategy is based on the selective N functionalization of the inner surface of mesopores, which not only assures the direct growth of ultrafine metal nanoclusters therein but also endows the active metal nanoclusters with excellent thermal stability via N-metal coordination. Remarkably, the mesopore-encapsulated N-coordinated Pt nanoclusters are particularly selective for making α,β-unsaturated alcohol, benefiting from their energetically favored reaction pathway for end-on binding α,β-unsaturated aldehyde reactants and heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen. The synthetic methodology is expected to provide new guidelines to improve the thermal stability of mesopore-encapsulated metal nanoclusters for superb catalysis.

Abstract:The fixation of metal nanoparticles into zeolite crystals has emerged as a new series of heterogeneous catalysts, giving performances that steadily outperform the generally supported catalysts in many important reactions. In this outlook, we define different noble metal-in-zeolite structures (metal@zeolite) according to the size of the nanoparticles and their relative location to the micropores. The metal species within the micropores and those larger than the micropores are denoted as encapsulated and fixed structures, respectively. The development in the strategies for the construction of metal@zeolite hybrid materials is briefly summarized in this work, where the rational preparation and improved thermal stability of the metal nanostructures are particularly mentioned. More importantly, these metal@zeolite hybrid materials as catalysts exhibit excellent shape selectivity. Finally, we review the current challenges and future perspectives for these metal@zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Recently, metal nanoframes have received increased attention due to their unique spatial and physicochemical, e.g., catalytic and plasmonic properties. So far, a variety of synthetic procedures have been developed to fabricate metal nanoframes with different shapes, sizes and compositions. Typical synthesis of metal nanoframes involves two stages: 1) formation of solid nanocrystals and 2) hollowing out the interiors and side faces. In this review, solution-phase synthetic strategies are summarized, based on galvanic replacement reactions, oxidative etching, the Kirkendall effect, electrodeposition, and template-assisted growth, as well as one-pot synthesis. Their potential applications in catalysis and optical sensing are overviewed as well.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Rational Design of Nanocatalysts for Fuel Cell Reactions

Abstract:Engineering nanocrystals with size, shape, composition and structure control for enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and small molecule oxidation reactions is highly desirable for promoting the development of fuel cell devices. In this presentation, I will focus on my recent advances in rational design and controlled synthesis of high-quality multicomponent nanocrystals for enhancing ORR and small molecules oxidation reactions. I will start with three examples on how to engineer FePt NWs, FePtPd/FePt core/shell nanowires (NWs) and graphene-FePt nanoparticles (NPs) composite for getting advanced Pt-based catalysts for ORR with extremely high activity and stability. After that, I will move to non-Pt catalysts such as graphene-Co/CoO NPs and M/CuPd NPs (M=Ag, Au), which exhibit comparable and even higher ORR activity and stability than commercial Pt catalyst. Finally, I will show two interesting examples on how to engineering trimetallic NPs and NWs for enhancing methanol and formic acid oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Colloidal metal nanocrystals with uniform sizes, shapes, compositions, and architectures are ideal building blocks for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with well-defined characteristics toward the investigation of accurate structure-property relationships and better understanding of catalytic mechanism. However, their applications in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis are often restricted by the difficulty in maintaining the high metal dispersity and easy accessibility to active sites under harsh operating conditions. Here, a partial-oxide-coating strategy is proposed to stabilize metal nanocrystals against sintering and meanwhile enable an effective exposure of active sites. As a proof-of-concept, controlled partial silica coating of colloidally prepared Pd0.82 Ni0.18 nanocrystals with the size of 8 nm is demonstrated. This partially coated catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and stability, outperforming its counterparts with fully coated and supported structures, in reverse water gas shift (RWGS) catalysis particularly at high operating temperatures. This study opens a new avenue for the exploration of colloidal metal nanocrystals in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Rapidly growing research interests surround heterogeneous nanocatalysis, in which metal nanoparticles (NPs) play a pivotal role as structure-sensitive active centers. With advances in nanotechnology, the morphology of metal NPs can be precisely controlled, which can provide well-defined models of nanocatalysts for understanding and optimizing the structure-reactivity correlations and the catalytic mechanisms. Benefiting from this, further credible evidence can be acquired on well-defined nanocatalysts rather than common multiphase systems, which is of great significance for the design and practical application of active metal nanocatalysts. Numerous studies demonstrate that enhanced structure-sensitive catalytic activity and selectivity are dependent not only on an increased surface-to-volume ratio and special surface atom arrangements, but also on tailored metal-metal and metal-organic-ligand interfaces, which is ascribed to the size, shape, composition, and ligand effects. Size-reactivity relationships and underlying size-dependent metal-oxide interactions are observed in many reactions. For bimetallic nanocatalysts, the composition and nanostructure play critical roles in regulating reactivities. Crystal facets favor individual catalytic selectivity and rates via distinct reaction pathways occurring on diverse atomic arrangements, both to low-index and high-index facets. High-index facets exhibit superior reactivities owing to their high-energy active sites, which facilitate rapid bond-breaking and new bond generation. Additionally, organic ligands may enhance the catalytic activity and selectivity of metal nanocatalysts via changing the adsorption energies of reactants and/or reaction energy barriers. Furthermore, atomically dispersed metals, especially single-atom metallic catalysts, have emerged recently, which can achieve better specific catalytic activity compared to conventional nanostructured metallic catalysts due to the low-coordination environment, stronger interaction with supports, and maximum service efficiency. Here, recent progress in shaped metallic nanocatalysts is examined and several parameters are discussed, as well as finally highlighting single-atom metallic catalysts and some perspectives on nanocatalysis. The integration of nanotechnology and nanocatalysis has been shaping up and, no doubt, the combination of sensitive characterization techniques and quantum calculations will play more important roles in such processes.

Abstract:The oriented conversion of C1 molecules including CO, CO2, CH4, and CH3OH has received great attention in the past few decades because of its essential role in sustainable chemistry. Spinel oxides with fine hardness, great thermal stability, and tunable chemical properties are advantageous catalysts or precursors in the activation of inert C1 molecules for the production of high-value-added chemicals. This review provides a thorough overview of the recent developments in spinel-structured nanocatalysts for the processes of thermal-driven C1 conversion, highlighting the spinel-structured advantages in deriving active metals, stabilizing metal cations, constructing adjacent synergic sites, and tuning oxygen vacancies. Finally, the potential challenges and development directions are discussed for the application of spinel-structured catalysts in thermal-driven C1 conversion reactions.

Abstract:As a typical class of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) possessing prominent advantages of high reactivity, high selectivity, high stability, and maximized atomic utilization, emerging metal‐nitrogen‐doped carbon (M‐N‐C) materials, wherein dispersive metal atoms are coordinated to nitrogen atoms doped in carbon nanomaterials, have presented a high promise to replace the conventional metal or metal oxides‐based catalysts. In this work, recent progress in M‐N‐C‐based materials achieved in both theoretical and experimental investigations is summarized and general principles for novel catalysts design from electronic structure modulating are provided. Firstly, the applications and mechanisms on the advantages and challenges of M‐N‐C‐based materials for a variety of sustainable fuel generation and bioinspired reactions, including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and nanozyme reactions are reviewed. Then, strategies toward enhancing the catalytic performance by engineering the nature of metal ion centers, coordinative environment of active centers, carbon support, and their synergistic cooperation, are proposed. Finally, prospects for the rational design of next generation high‐performance M‐N‐C‐based catalysts are outlined. It is expected that this work will provide insights into high‐performance catalysts innovation for sustainable and environmental technologies.

Abstract:The zeolites, a class of materials with uniform porosity, high crystallinity, structural diversity, and large surface area, have been extensively studied in both synthesis and applications in catalysis, separation, and adsorption. In the zeolite crystals, the uniform nanopores benefit molecular diffusion, but the absence of catalytically active metal species (e.g. isolated metal site, nanocluster, and nanoparticle) strongly limits their wide applications. Solution to this problem is to fix the active sites inside of the nanoporous crystals. In this review, it is briefly summarized recent developments on metal-based active species fixed in zeolite crystals, including the synthesis strategies, catalytic performances, and mechanism investigations. It is emphasized that the nanoparticles of metals and metal oxides fixed inside of zeolite crystals effectively combine the advantages of high activity of the nanoparticles and the selectivity/stability of the zeolite, resulting in enhanced catalytic performances in a series of reactions. Particularly, the metal nanoparticles are effectively stabilized by the zeolite sheath, giving superior sinter resistance at harsh reaction conditions. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This work discusses the preparation of small metal nanoclusters stabilized with glycol and OH−1, which are attractable building blocks for the fabrication of new heterogeneous catalyst. New Os and Pt/Rh bimetallic nanoclusters with small particle size and narrow size distribution have been prepared by the polyol synthesis method and characterized by TEM, EDX, XRD and XPS. Superior catalytic properties for the selective hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzene over the nanocomposite catalysts composed of metal nanocluters and inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles have been discussed.
