Abstract:This paper presents an algebraic study of a family of logics related to Abelian logic ($Ab$), the logic of Abelian lattice-ordeded groups. $Ab$ is treated as the basic, weakest logic, and its expansions are referred to as superabelian logics. To account for the language differences in Lukasiewicz logics, we introduced the expansion of $Ab$ with an additional constant and call it pointed Abelian logic ($pAb$), with semantics based on pointed Abelian $l$-groups. We take the first steps in the study of infinitary extensions of $Ab$, give a completeness theorem for $pAb$, and obtain axiomatizations of Lukasiewicz unbound logics relative to $pAb$. The paper concludes with an exploration of other significant extensions of $pAb$ and their algebraic characterizations.

Abstract:We study three kinds of compactness in some variants of Gödel logic: compactness, entailment compactness, and approximate entailment compactness. For countable first-order underlying language we use the Henkin construction to prove the compactness property of extensions of first-order Gödel logic enriched by nullary connective or the Baaz's projection connective. In the case of uncountable first-order language we use the ultraproduct method to derive the compactness theorem

Abstract:The author has recently introduced an abstract algebraic framework of analogical proportions within the general setting of universal algebra. The purpose of this paper is to lift that framework from universal algebra to the strictly more expressive setting of full first-order logic. We show that the so-obtained logic-based framework preserves all desired properties and we prove novel results in that extended setting.

Abstract:Relational descriptions have been used in formalizing diverse computational notions, including, for example, operational semantics, typing, and acceptance by non-deterministic machines. We therefore propose a (restricted) logical theory over relations as a language for specifying such notions. Our specification logic is further characterized by an ability to explicitly treat binding in object languages. Once such a logic is fixed, a natural next question is how we might prove theorems about specifications written in it. We propose to use a second logic, called a reasoning logic, for this purpose. A satisfactory reasoning logic should be able to completely encode the specification logic. Associated with the specification logic are various notions of binding: for quantifiers within formulas, for eigenvariables within sequents, and for abstractions within terms. To provide a natural treatment of these aspects, the reasoning logic must encode binding structures as well as their associated notions of scope, free and bound variables, and capture-avoiding substitution. Further, to support arguments about provability, the reasoning logic should possess strong mechanisms for constructing proofs by induction and co-induction. We provide these capabilities here by using a logic called G which represents relations over lambda-terms via definitions of atomic judgments, contains inference rules for induction and co-induction, and includes a special generic quantifier. We show how provability in the specification logic can be transparently encoded in G. We also describe an interactive theorem prover called Abella that implements G and this two-level logic approach and we present several examples that demonstrate the efficacy of Abella in reasoning about computations.

Abstract:Abstraction logic is a new logic, serving as a foundation of mathematics. It combines features of both predicate logic and higher-order logic: abstraction logic can be viewed both as higher-order logic minus static types as well as predicate logic plus operators and variable binding. We argue that abstraction logic is the best foundational logic possible because it maximises both simplicity and practical expressivity. This argument is supported by the observation that abstraction logic has simpler terms and a simpler notion of proof than all other general logics. At the same time, abstraction logic can formalise both intuitionistic and classical abstraction logic, and is sound and complete for these logics and all other logics extending deduction logic with equality.

Abstract:We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pairs of operators, and a cut-free sequent calculus. The calculus exploits operators on sequents, in the style of "nested" or "tree-sequent" calculi; cut-admissibility is shown by constructive syntactic methods. The applicability of the logic is illustrated by reasoning about the muddy children puzzle, for which the calculus is augmented with extra rules to express the facts of the muddy children scenario.

On Infinitary Gödel logics

Abstract:We study propositional and first-order Gödel logics over infinitary languages which are motivated semantically by corresponding interpretations into the unit interval [0,1]. We provide infinitary Hilbert-style calculi for the particular (propositional and first-order) cases with con-/disjunctions of countable length and prove corresponding completeness theorems by extending the usual Lindenbaum-Tarski construction to the infinitary case for a respective algebraic semantics via complete linear Heyting algebras. We provide infinitary hypersequent calculi and prove corresponding cut-elimination theorems in the Schütte-Tait-style. Initial observations are made regarding truth-value sets other than [0,1].

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:We present a new infinite family of finite-valued paraconsistent logics—whose n -th member we call Sette's logic of order n and denote by —all of which extending da Costa's logic and extended by classical logic . We classify the family within the Leibniz hierarchy by proving that all its members are finitely algebraizable. We also prove a completeness theorem for each logic wrt. a single logical matrix and characterize the quasivariety . Finally, we consider the infimum of the family and prove that unlike Sette's logic of any given finite order, the logic is not finitary. Furthermore, we establish a completeness result for the logic as well as characterize the generalized quasivariety . We conclude with analogous results for the finitary companion of .

Goedel logics: Prenex fragments

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a complete classification for the first-order Goedel logics concerning the property that the formulas admit logically equivalent prenex normal forms. We show that the only first-order Goedel logics that admit such prenex forms are those with finite truth value sets since they allow all quantifier-shift rules and the logic $G_\uparrow$ with only one accumulation point at 1 in the infinite truth value set. In all the other cases, there are generally no logically equivalent prenex normal forms. We will also see that $G_\uparrow$ is the intersection of all finite first-order Goedel logics. The second part of this paper investigates the existence of effective equivalence between the validity of a formula and the validity of some prenex normal form. The existence of such a normal form is obvious for finite valued Goedel logic and $G_\uparrow$. Goedel logics with an uncountable truth value set admit the prenex normal forms if and only if every surrounding of 0 is uncountable or 0 is an isolated point. Otherwise, uncountable Goedel logics are not recursively enumerable, however, the prenex fragment is always recursively enumerable. Therefore, there is no effective translation between the valid formula and the valid prenex normal form. However, the existence of effectively constructible validity equivalent prenex forms for the countable case is still up for debate.

Type Isomorphisms for Multiplicative-Additive Linear Logic

Abstract:We characterize type isomorphisms in the multiplicative-additive fragment of linear logic (MALL), and thus in *-autonomous categories with finite products, extending a result for the multiplicative fragment by Balat and Di Cosmo. This yields a much richer equational theory involving distributivity and cancellation laws. The unit-free case is obtained by relying on the proof-net syntax introduced by Hughes and Van Glabbeek. We use the sequent calculus to extend our results to full MALL, including all units, thanks to a study of cut-elimination and rule commutations.

Abstract:Perfect paradefinite algebras are De Morgan algebras expanded with an operation that allows for the full behavior of classical negation to be restored. They form a variety that is term-equivalent to the variety of involutive Stone algebras. Their associated multiple-conclusion (Set-Set) and single-conclusion () order-preserving logics are non-algebraizable self-extensional logics of formal inconsistency and undeterminedness determined by a six-valued matrix. We studied these logics extensively in Gomes et al. ((2022). Electronic Proceedings in Theoretical Computer Science357 56–76.) from both the algebraic and the proof-theoretical perspectives. In the present paper, we continue that study by investigating directions for conservatively expanding these logics with an implication connective (essentially, one that admits the deduction-detachment theorem). We first consider logics given by very simple and manageable non-deterministic semantics whose implication (in isolation) is classical. These, nevertheless, fail to be self-extensional. We then consider the implication realized by the relative pseudo-complement over the six-valued perfect paradefinite algebra. Our strategy is to expand the language of the latter algebra with this connective and study the (self-extensional) Set-Set and order-preserving and -assertional logics of the variety induced by the resulting algebra. We provide axiomatizations for such new variety and for such logics, drawing parallels with the class of symmetric Heyting algebras and with Moisil's "symmetric modal logic." For the order-preserving Set-Set logic, in particular, we obtain a Set-Set axiomatization that is analytic. We close by studying interpolation properties for these logics and concluding that the new variety has the Maehara amalgamation property.

Finite models for positive combinatorial and exponential algebra

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Abstract:We study Polynomial Lawvere logic PL, a logic defined over the Lawvere quantale of extended positive reals with sum as tensor, to which we add multiplication, thereby obtaining a semiring structure. PL is designed for complex quantitative reasoning, allowing judgements that express inequalities between polynomials on the extended positive reals. We introduce a deduction system and demonstrate its expressiveness by deriving a classical result from probability theory relating the Kantorovich and the total variation distances. Although the deductive system is not complete in general, we achieve completeness for finitely axiomatizable theories. The proof of completeness relies on the Krivine-Stengle Positivstellensatz (a variant of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz). Additionally, we provide new complexity results, both for PL and its affine fragment AL, regarding two decision problems: satisfiability of a set of judgements and semantical consequence from a set of judgements. The former is NP-complete in AL and in PSPACE for PL; the latter is co-NP complete in PL and in PSPACE for PL.

Semi-Substructural Logics with Additives

Abstract:This work concerns the proof theory of (left) skew monoidal categories and their variants (e.g. closed monoidal, symmetric monoidal), continuing the line of work initiated in recent years by Uustalu et al. Skew monoidal categories are a weak version of Mac Lane's monoidal categories, where the structural laws are not required to be invertible, they are merely natural transformations with a specific orientation. Sequent calculi which can be modelled in such categories can be identified as deductive systems for restricted substructural fragments of intuitionistic linear logic. These calculi enjoy cut elimination and admit a focusing strategy, sharing resemblance with Andreoli's normalization technique for linear logic. The focusing procedure is useful for solving the coherence problem of the considered categories with skew structure.

A MALL Geometry of Interaction Based on Indexed Linear Logic

Abstract:We construct a geometry of interaction (GoI: dynamic modeling of Gentzen-style cut elimination) for multiplicative-additive linear logic (MALL) by employing Bucciarelli-Ehrhard indexed linear logic MALL(I) to handle the additives. Our construction is an extension to the additives of the Haghverdi-Scott categorical formulation (a multiplicative GoI situation in a traced monoidal category) for Girard's original GoI 1. The indices are shown to serve not only in their original denotational level, but also at a finer grained dynamic level so that the peculiarities of additive cut elimination such as superposition, erasure of subproofs, and additive (co-) contraction can be handled with the explicit use of indices. Proofs are interpreted as indexed subsets in the category Rel, but without the explicit relational composition; instead, execution formulas are run pointwise on the interpretation at each index, w.r.t symmetries of cuts, in a traced monoidal category with a reflexive object and a zero morphism. The sets of indices diminish overall when an execution formula is run, corresponding to the additive cut-elimination procedure (erasure), and allowing recovery of the relational composition. The main theorem is the invariance of the execution formulas along cut elimination so that the formulas converge to the denotations of (cut-free) proofs.

Abstract:We develop a classical propositional logic for reasoning about combinatory logic. We define its syntax, axiomatic system and semantics. The syntax and axiomatic system are presented based on classical propositional logic, with typed combinatory terms as basic propositions, along with the semantics based on applicative structures extended with special elements corresponding to primitive combinators. Both the equational theory of untyped combinatory logic and the proposed axiomatic system are proved to be sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics. In addition, we prove that combinatory logic is sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics.

Abstract:In a previous work we introduced a non-associative non-commutative logic extended by multimodalities, called subexponentials, licensing local application of structural rules. Here, we further explore this system, considering a classical one-sided multi-succedent classical version of the system, following the exponential-free calculi of Buszkowski's and de Groote and Lamarche's works, where the intuitionistic calculus is shown to embed faithfully into the classical fragment.
