Abstract:In 1999, some monogenean (Neobenedenia melleni) on the skin of marine fishes (Pseudosciaena crocea, Seriola dumerili and Epinephelus awoara) were found in Xiamen, Fujian, China. They were described as follows (Measured in microns). 　　Host: Pseudosciaena crocea, and Seriola dumerili. 　　Locality: Xiamen, Fujian, China. 24°29′ N，118°03′E. 　　Site: Skin and gill. 　　Body elliptical, total length including haptor 2　635～4　689(3　817μm, n=20), maximum width 1 255～2 683(2　015)μm, at anterior end of testes. Haptor almost circular, smooth, shallow, 983～1 081μm×935～1 057(1 051×1　026)μm, aseptate, with 1 pair of accessory sclerites, 1 pair of anterior hamuli and 1 pair of posterior hamuli in linear series and 7 pairs of marginal hooklets. Accessory sclerites stout, scoop-shaped, 219～236(228)μm long; anterior hamuli longest, 275～363(318)μm; posterior hamuli short, 125～163(146)μm. Marginal hooklets arranged radially,14 in number. Anterior attachment organs disc suckerlike, each 395～426μm×312～386(413×358)μm. Pharynx glandular, with 5-lobed, 205～359μm×267～446（333×406)μm. Esophagus short. Intestinal crura dendritic medially and laterally, not confluent posteriorly, Four eyes embedded in ganglionic mass. Two testes side by side, spherical, indented, 316～427μm×343～447(375×402)μm. Glands of Goto may be observed. Ovary oval, 355～426μm×338～406(398×370)μm, containing an expanded ventral chamber. Uterus short, leading to common genital pore. Vitelline folliclos, extend anterior to pharynx, posteriorly to posterior end of the body proper. Eggs polyhedral, 128～205μm×143～186（172×165）μm, with a long filament（261～385）μm at the end.
Some ecological aspects of Monogeneans (Platyhelminthes) ectoparasites of Enteromius guirali Thominot, 1886 (Pisces: Cyprinidae) from Cesala River in Cameroon

Abstract:Fish are exposed to various parasites such as monogeneans which are flatworms that preferentially affect the gills and skin of these hosts. This study represents the first investigation concerning the distribution of monogenean infracommunities of Enteromius guirali in Cameroon. A total of 100 fish were collected from Cesala River and preserved in 8% formalin solution. Parasite community consisted of Dactylogyrus mendehei and D. nyongensis . These monogenean species adopted an aggregated distribution. Their mean intensities and prevalence increased with host size. Both sides of E. guirali were similarly infested, and no preference for gill arches was recorded for each parasite species. Posterior hemibranch was always the most parasitized, showing the highest parasitic load. Median sector and distal filamentous zone were highly colonized by both monogenean species. This study contributes to understand that the large gill surface offered by great hosts, heterogeneity, bilateral symmetrically of the host's gill system on one hand, and the morphology of haptoral parts and reproduction of parasites, on the other hand, are the main factors which determine the distribution of studied component community.

Abstract:Unlike their marine counterparts, tropical freshwater clupeids receive little scientific attention. However, they sustain important fisheries that may be of (inter)national commercial interest. Africa harbours over 20 freshwater clupeid species within Pellonulini. Recent research suggests their most abundant parasites are gill-infecting monogenean flatworms within Kapentagyrus. After inspecting specimens of 12 freshwater clupeids from West and Central Africa, mainly sourced in biodiversity collections, we propose 11 new species of Kapentagyrus, which we describe using their haptoral and genital morphology. Because of their high morphological similarity, species delineation relies mostly on the morphometrics of anchors and hooks. Specifically, earlier, molecular taxonomic work indicated that the proportion between the length of the anchor roots, and between the hook and anchor length, is diagnostic. On average, about one species of Kapentagyrus exists per pellonuline species, although Pellonula leonensis harbours four species and Microthrissa congica two, while Microthrissa moeruensis and Potamothrissa acutirostris share a gill monogenean species. This study more than quadruples the number of known species of Kapentagyrus, also almost quadrupling the number of pellonuline species of which monogeneans are known. Since members of Kapentagyrus are informative about their hosts’ ecology, evolutionary history, and introduction routes, this enables a parasitological perspective on several data-poor African fisheries.

Abstract:Owing to the largely unexplored diversity of metazoan parasites, their speciation mechanisms and the circumstances under which such speciation occurs – in allopatry or sympatry – remain vastly understudied. Cichlids and their monogenean flatworm parasites have previously served as a study system for macroevolutionary processes, e.g., for the role of East African host radiations on parasite communities. Here, we investigate the diversity and evolution of the poorly explored monogeneans infecting a West and Central African lineage of cichlid fishes: Chromidotilapiini, which is the most species-rich tribe of cichlids in this region. We screened gills of 149 host specimens (27 species) from natural history collections and measured systematically informative characters of the sclerotised attachment and reproductive organs of the parasites. Ten monogenean species (Dactylogyridae: Cichlidogyrus and Onchobdella) were found, eight of which are newly described and one redescribed herein. The phylogenetic positions of chromidotilapiines-infecting species of Cichlidogyrus were inferred through a parsimony analysis of the morphological characters. Furthermore, we employed machine learning algorithms to detect morphological features associated with the main lineages of Cichlidogyrus. Although the results of these experimental algorithms remain inconclusive, the parsimony analysis indicates that West and Central African lineages of Cichlidogyrus and Onchobdella are monophyletic, unlike the paraphyletic host lineages. Several instances of host sharing suggest occurrences of intra-host speciation (sympatry) and host switching (allopatry). Some morphological variation was recorded that may also indicate the presence of species complexes. We conclude that collection material can provide important insights on parasite evolution despite the lack of well-preserved DNA material. En raison de la nature largement inexplorée de la diversité des parasites métazoaires, leurs mécanismes de spéciation et les circonstances dans lesquelles cette spéciation se produit—allopatrie ou sympatrie—restent très peu étudiés. Les cichlidés et leurs parasites Plathelminthes monogènes ont déjà servi de modèle pour l'étude des processus macro-évolutifs, par exemple pour le rôle des radiations d'hôtes de l'Afrique de l'Est sur les communautés de parasites. Ici, nous étudions la diversité et l'évolution des monogènes peu étudiées qui infestent une lignée de poissons cichlidés d'Afrique occidentale et centrale : les Chromidotilapiini, qui est la tribu de cichlidés la plus riche en espèces dans cette région. Nous avons examiné les branchies de 149 spécimens hôtes (27 espèces) provenant de musées d'histoire naturelle et mesuré systématiquement les caractères informatifs des pièces sclérifiées du hapteur et des organes copulateurs des parasites. Dix espèces de monogènes (Dactylogyridae : Cichlidogyrus et Onchobdella) ont été trouvées ; huit sont nouvelles pour la science et une est redécrite. Les positions phylogénétiques des espèces de Cichlidogyrus infectant les chromidotilapiines ont été déduites par une analyse de parcimonie des caractères morphologiques. En outre, nous avons utilisé des algorithmes d'apprentissage automatique pour détecter les caractéristiques morphologiques associées aux principales lignées de Cichlidogyrus. Bien que les résultats de ces algorithmes expérimentaux restent peu concluants, l'analyse de parcimonie indique que les lignées de Cichlidogyrus et d' Onchobdella de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et Central sont monophylétiques, contrairement aux lignées d'hôtes qui sont paraphylétiques. Plusieurs cas de partage d'hôtes suggèrent des occurrences de spéciation synxénique (sympatrie) et de changement d'hôte (allopatrie). Certaines variations morphologiques ont été enregistrées et peuvent également indiquer la présence de complexes d'espèces. Nous concluons donc que le matériel de collection peut fournir des informations importantes sur l'évolution des parasites malgré le manque d'ADN exploitable.

Monogenean Parasite Cultures: Current Techniques and Recent Advances

Abstract:Global expansion in fish production and trade of aquatic ornamental species requires advances in aquatic animal health management. Aquatic parasite cultures permit diverse research opportunities to understand parasite-host dynamics and are essential to validate the efficacy of treatments that could reduce infections in captive populations. Monogeneans are important pathogenic parasites of captured captive fishes and exhibit a single-host life cycle, which makes them amenable to in vivo culture. Continuous cultures of oviparous monogenean parasites provide a valuable resource of eggs, oncomiracidia (larvae) and adult parasites for use in varied ecological and applied scientific research. For example, the parasite-host dynamics of Entobdella soleae (van Beneden and Hesse, 1864) and its fish host, Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758), is one of the most well-documented of all monogeneans following meticulous, dedicated study. Polystoma spp. cultures provide an intriguing model for examining evolution in monogeneans because they exhibit two alternative phenotypes depending on the age of infection of amphibians. Furthermore, assessments of the ecological, pathological and immunological effects of fish parasites in aquaculture have been achieved through cultures of Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 spp., Benedenia seriolae (Yamaguti, 1934), Neobenedenia Yamaguti, 1963 spp. and Zeuxapta seriolae (Meserve, 1938). This review critically examines methods to establish and maintain in vivo monogenean monocultures on finfish, elasmobranchs and amphibians. Four separate approaches to establish cultures are scrutinised including the collection of live infected hosts, cohabiting recipient hosts with infected stock, cohabiting hosts with parasite eggs or oncomiracidia (larvae) and direct transfer of live adult parasites onto new fish hosts. Specific parasite species' biology and behaviour permits predictive collection of parasite life stages to effectively maintain a continuous culture, while environmental parameters can be altered to manipulate parasite generation time. Parasite virulence and biosecurity are vital components of a well-managed culture to ensure appropriate animal welfare and uncontaminated surrounding environments. Contemporary approaches and techniques are reviewed to ensure optimised monogenean cultures, which ultimately can be used to further our understanding of aquatic parasitology and identify mechanisms to limit infestations in public aquaria, ornamental trade and intensive aquaculture.
Comprehensive annotated checklist of monogenean diversity and distribution in Algerian marine fish

Abstract:A comprehensive checklist of monogenean parasites from marine fish in Algeria was compiled by reviewing the entire available literature, resulting in a detailed parasite-host and host-parasite list. This checklist includes 156 species across 71 genera and 23 families of monogeneans, with 136 species identified to the species level, while the remaining 20 species are identified only to the genus (19 species) or subfamily level (1 species). These parasites have been reported from 82 marine fish hosts, spanning 34 families: 15 species of Elasmobranchii, 1 of Holocephali, and 66 of Teleostei. The highest number of monogenean species was found on Teleostei (128), followed by Elasmobranchii (26), and Holocephali (2). The family Diplectanidae Monticelli, 1903 is the most prevalent, encompassing 43 species, followed by Microcotylidae Taschenberg, 1879 with 27 species. Among the most diverse genera are Lamellodiscus Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 and Microcotyle Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863, with the latter's species, Microcotyle erythrini , Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 being the most encountered species. The class Teleostei has been the most extensively studied, with the Sparidae Rafinesque, 1818 family receiving the most attention, particularly Boops boops (Linnaeus) as the most cited fish species. Notably, Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire) and Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus) exhibit high species richness. The checklist also identified seven Monogenea species, including Atriaster maillardi López-Román & De Armas Hernández, 1989, newly recorded in the Mediterranean. This checklist provides an up-to-date summary of Monogenea diversity in Algerian marine fish, reflecting nearly three decades of detailed taxonomic research. It highlights the current understanding of these parasites and underscores the need for continued research to fully explore the diversity of monogenean parasites in Algerian fish fauna.

Abstract:Monogenea (Platyhelminthes, Neodermata) are the most species-rich class within the Neodermata superclass of primarily fish parasites. Despite their economic and ecological importance, monogenean research tends to focus on their morphological, phylogenetic, and population characteristics, while comprehensive omics analyses aimed at describing functionally important molecules are few and far between. We present a molecular characterisation of monogenean representative Eudiplozoon nipponicum , an obligate haematophagous parasite infecting the gills of the common carp. We report its nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, present a functional annotation of protein molecules relevant to the molecular and biochemical aspect of physiological processes involved in interactions with the fish hosts, and re-examinate the taxonomic position of Eudiplozoon species within the Diplozoidae family.

Patterns of host-parasite associations between marine meiofaunal flatworms (Platyhelminthes) and rhytidocystids (Apicomplexa)

Abstract:Microturbellarians are abundant and ubiquitous members of marine meiofaunal communities around the world. Because of their small body size, these microscopic animals are rarely considered as hosts for parasitic organisms. Indeed, many protists, both free-living and parasitic ones, equal or surpass meiofaunal animals in size. Despite several anecdotal records of "gregarines", "sporozoans", and "apicomplexans" parasitizing microturbellarians in the literature-some of them dating back to the nineteenth century-these single-celled parasites have never been identified and characterized. More recently, the sequencing of eukaryotic microbiomes in microscopic invertebrates have revealed a hidden diversity of protist parasites infecting microturbellarians and other meiofaunal animals. Here we show that apicomplexans isolated from twelve taxonomically diverse rhabdocoel taxa and one species of proseriate collected in four geographically distinct areas around the Pacific Ocean (Okinawa, Hokkaido, and British Columbia) and the Caribbean Sea (Curaçao) all belong to the apicomplexan genus Rhytidocystis. Based on comprehensive molecular phylogenies of Rhabdocoela and Proseriata inferred from both 18S and 28S rDNA sequences, as well as a molecular phylogeny of Marosporida inferred from 18S rDNA sequences, we determine the phylogenetic positions of the microturbellarian hosts and their parasites. Multiple lines of evidence, including morphological and molecular data, show that at least nine new species of Rhytidocystis infect the microturbellarian hosts collected in this study, more than doubling the number of previously recognized species of Rhytidocystis, all of which infect polychaete hosts. A cophylogenetic analysis examining patterns of phylosymbiosis between hosts and parasites suggests a complex picture of overall incongruence between host and parasite phylogenies, and varying degrees of geographic signals and taxon specificity.

Abstract:A checklist of 113 monogenean species parasitizing marine fishes (60 species) from different localities in Egypt is provided. The list is supplemented by eight newly collected monogenean species from Red Sea fishes, off Safaga and El-Quseir. Five of these species are new Egyptian records: Calydiscoides euzeti Justine, 2007, Calydiscoides rohdei Oliver, 1984, Lethrinitrema austrosinense (Li & Chen, 2005) Sun, Li & Yang, 2014, Pseudohaliotrema sphincteroporus Yamaguti, 1953, and Pentatres sphyraenae Euzet & Razarihelisoa, 1959. Furthermore, Lutjanus ehrenbergii (Peters), Lethrinus nebulosus (Forsskål), Lethrinus mahsena (Forsskål), Siganus stellatus (Forsskål), and Sphyraena flavicauda Rüppell represent new host records. The current study also lists nine monogenean species from the Gulf of Aqaba for which the coordinates of the sampling localities were not clearly defined, but which could also belong to the Egyptian fauna as the gulf is part of the Red Sea basin. Dactylogyrus aegyptiacus Ramadan, 1983 is transferred to Ecnomotrema Kritsky, 2023 as E. aegyptiacum (Ramadan, 1983) n. comb. Entobdella aegyptiacus Amer, 1990, Polylabroides aegyptiacus Mahmoud & Shaheed 1998, Gotocotyla sigani Abdel Aal, Ghattas & Badawy, 2001, Neohexostoma epinepheli Abdel Aal, Ghattas & Badawy, 2001, Neothoracocotyle commersoni Abdel Aal, Ghattas & Badawy, 2001, Acleotrema maculatum Morsy, El Fayoumi & Fahmy, 2014, Diplectanum harid Morsy, El Fayoumi, Al Shahawy & Fahmy, 2014, and Pseudorhabdosynochus chlorostigma Morsy, El Fayoumi, Al Shahawy & Fahmy, 2014, are considered species inquirendae . Paranaella diplodae Bayoumy, Abd El-Hady & Hassanain, 2007 is considered incertae sedis . Allencotyla lutini El-Dien, 1995 and Lamellodiscus diplodicus Bayoumy, 2003 are regarded as nomina nuda .

Host-Specific Parasites Reveal the History and Biogeographical Contacts of Their Hosts: The Monogenea of Nearctic Cyprinoid Fishes

Abstract:Host-specific parasites exhibit close co-evolutionary associations with their hosts. In the case of fragmented/disjunct host distribution, host-specific parasites may reflect the biogeographical history of regions and/or the role played by contacts of hosts. The present study was focused on Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) species almost exclusively parasitizing cyprinoid fishes. We investigated the phylogenetic relationships between Dactylogyrus parasites of Nearctic cyprinoids (Leuciscidae) and Dactylogyrus parasites of Palearctic cyprinoids and used Dactylogyrus phylogeny to explore the biogeography of fish hosts in Europe and North America. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that two Nearctic clades of Dactylogyrus spp. have different origins. Historical contacts between European and North American leuciscids were accompanied by the host switching of Dactylogyrus species. In the Nearctic region, Dactylogyrus parasites also colonized non-leuciscid fishes. Dactylogyrus spp. of three Nearctic leuciscid clades were included in the phylogenetic reconstruction; only Dactylogyrus spp. of the Plagopterinae had a common origin. Dactylogyrus species did not reflect the phylogenetic relationships among leuciscid clades, suggesting that past co-diversification was overshadowed by colonization events mediated by paleogeographic and climatological changes and extensive drainage reorganization. Host-specific monogeneans serve as a supplementary tool to reveal the historical biogeographical contacts between freshwater fish from the North America and Europe and also contemporary contacts of leuciscids in North America.

Abstract:In the present study, a new species of the genus Moniliformis species is described taxonomically in the mitochondrial genomic context. The parasite was found in a plateau zokor captured in a high-altitude area of Xiahe County of Gansu Province, China. The mitochondrial ( mt ) genome length of this new species was 14,066 bp comprising 36 genes and 2 additional non-coding regions (SNR and LNR), without atp 8. The molecular phylogeny inferred by the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene ( cox 1) and the18S ribosomal RNA gene (18S rDNA) sequences showed that the parasite as a sister species to other Moniliformis spp. and was named Moniliformis sp. XH-2020. The phylogeny of the concatenated amino acid sequences of the 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs) showed Moniliformis sp. XH-2020 in the same cluster as Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus and Oncicola luehe i confirming the cox 1 and 18S rDNA phylogenetic inference. In addition, the entire mt genome sequenced in this study represents the first in the order Moniliformida, providing molecular material for further study of the phylogeny of the class Archiacanthocephala. Moreover, the species of this class, use arthropods as intermediate hosts and mammals as definitive hosts and are agents of acanthocephaliasis, a zoonosis in humans. Therefore, this study not only expands the host range among potential wild animal hosts for Archiacanthocephalans which is of great ecological and evolutionary significance but also has important significance for the research of zoonotic parasitic diseases.

Abstract:Parasite factors associated with recognition and selection of the host and the mechanisms in the host responsible for acceptance or rejection of the invading organism were evaluated. Sensory structures in parasites are able to detect differences between different fish species and this ability to discern between fishes may be based on both chemical and mechanical stimuli on the host surface. Complex glycoproteins, proteins, carbohydrates and simple molecules attract parasites or modify their behaviour. Furthermore, attachment of the monogenean parasite to a host is dependent on both mechanical structures and chemical factors in the parasite. These systems comprise anterior pads, posterior haptors, gland secretions, and muscular elements. The parasite needs access to appropriate nutrients which can be absorbed and used for reproduction and in this context signals from the host are needed for an optimal physiological response of the parasite. The innate and adaptive immune systems of the host are important elements in this question. Investigations have indicated that innate host factors (complement, lectins, acute phase reactants, macrophages) can bind to monogeneans and elicit severe damage to the parasites. The targets for these hostile products are not only the monogenean tegument, but may involve the gastrodermis and glands. However, the parasite's ability to avoid and even exploit the wide array of immunological elements of the host may be an important player in the dynamic interactions between host and monogenean determining host specificity. Even fish hosts susceptible to a certain parasite show an ability to mount a protective response at post-infection periods. Elevation of the host's production of adaptive and non-adaptive factors following monogenean infections of a certain duration may explain the acquired response.

Abstract:Background: Paratetraonchoides inermis (Monogenea: Tetraonchoididae) is a flatworm parasitising the gills of uranoscopid fishes. Its morphological characteristics are ambiguous, and molecular data have never been used to study its phylogenetic relationships, which makes its taxonomic classification controversial. Also, several decades of unsuccessful attempts to resolve the relationships within the Monogenea present a strong indication that morphological datasets may not be robust enough to be used to infer evolutionary histories. As the use of molecular data is currently severely limited by their scarcity, we have sequenced and characterized the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of P. inermis. To investigate its phylogenetic position, we performed phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood approaches using concatenated amino acid sequences of all 12 protein-coding genes on a dataset containing all available monogenean mt genomes.Results: The circular mt genome of P. inermis (14,654 bp) contains the standard 36 genes: 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, 12 protein-encoding genes (PCGs; Atp8 is missing) and a major non-coding region (mNCR). All genes are transcribed from the same strand. The A + T content of the whole genome (82.6%), as well as its elements, is the highest reported among the monogeneans thus far. Three tRNA-like cloverleaf structures were found in mNCR. Several results of the phylogenomic analysis are in disagreement with previously proposed relationships: instead of being closely related to the Gyrodactylidea, Tetraonchidea exhibit a phylogenetic affinity with the Dactylogyridea + Capsalidea clade; and the order Capsalidea is neither basal within the subclass Monopisthocotylea, nor groups with the Gyrodactylidea, but instead forms a sister clade with the Dactylogyridea. The mt genome of P. inermis exhibits a unique gene order, with an extensive reorganization of tRNAs. Monogenea exhibit exceptional gene order plasticity within the Neodermata.Conclusions: This study shows that gene order within monopisthocotylid mt genomes is evolving at uneven rates, which creates misleading evolutionary signals. Furthermore, our results indicate that all previous attempts to resolve the evolutionary history of the Monogenea may have produced at least partially erroneous relationships. This further corroborates the necessity to generate more molecular data for this group of parasitic animals.
Proteomic analysis of Neobenedenia sp. and Rhabdosynochus viridisi (Monogenea, Monopisthocotylea): Insights into potential vaccine targets and diagnostic markers for finfish aquaculture

Abstract:Monogeneans are parasitic flatworms that represent a significant threat to the aquaculture industry. Species like Neobenedenia melleni (Capsalidae) and Rhabdosynochus viridisi (Diplectanidae) have been identified as causing diseases in farmed fish. In the past years, molecular research on monogeneans of the subclass Monopisthocotylea has focused on the generation of genomic and transcriptomic information and the identification in silico of some protein families of veterinary interest. Proteomic analysis has been suggested as a powerful tool to investigate proteins in parasites and identify potential targets for vaccine development and diagnosis. To date, the proteomic dataset for monogeneans has been restricted to a species of the subclass Polyopisthocotylea, while in monopisthocotyleans there is no proteomic data. In this study, we present the first proteomic data on two monopisthocotylean species, Neobenedenia sp. and R. viridisi, obtained from three distinct sample types: tissue, excretory-secretory products (ESPs), and eggs. A total of 1691 and 1846 expressed proteins were identified in Neobenedenia sp. and R. viridisi, respectively. The actin family was the largest protein family, followed by the tubulin family and the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) family. We focused mainly on ESPs because they are important to modulate the host immune system. We identified proteins of the actin, tubulin, HSP70 and HSP90 families in both tissue and ESPs, which have been recognized for their antigenic activities in parasitic flatworms. Furthermore, our study uncovered the presence of proteins within ESPs, such as annexin, calcium-binding protein, fructose bisphosphate aldolase, glutamate dehydrogenase, myoferlin, and paramyosin, that are targets for immunodiagnostic and vaccine development and hold paramount relevance in veterinary medicine. This study expands our knowledge of monogeneans and identified proteins that, in other platyhelminths are potential targets for vaccines and drug discovery.
Ecological and phylogenetic components of flatfish ectoparasites (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) from the Southern Gulf of Mexico

Abstract:For many years, parasite ecologists have debated the relative importance of phylogeny and ecology as drivers of parasite community structure. Here, we address this issue using data on the metazoan ectoparasite communities of different flatfish species. Twenty species of flatfish were collected along the continental shelf of the Southern Gulf of Mexico and examined for ectoparasites. Eight flatfish species were parasitized by at least one ectoparasite species. In total, 326 ectoparasites, representing 11 species (4 monogeneans, 4 copepods, 1 isopod, 1 branchiurid, and 1 leech) were removed from 1622 hosts examined. The highest prevalence (37.5%) occurred in Bomolochus sp1 from Trinectes maculatus, while the lower (0.1%) for Argulus sp., Gnathia sp. and Trachellobdella lubrica from Cyclopsetta chittendeni. Changes in the ectoparasite community structure per host species and region were evaluated using a Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance and represented by a multidimensional scaling analysis. Significant differences in the parasite species composition among regions and hosts were detected, but no significant interaction between regions and hosts occurred. A multivariate pairwise t-test detected significant differences in the parasite infracommunities between the Yucatan Shelf and the other two regions; in addition, significant differences were detected between C. chittendeni and the Syacium species as well as between Ancylopsetta dilecta and Syacium papillosum. In this case, there is no relationship between the patterns of ectoparasitic community structure and the inherent phylogenetic affinity of the hosts; instead, the variations in ectoparasitic communities are determined by a regional ecological component.
Morphological and Molecular Phylogenetic Characterization of Three New Marine Goniomonad Species

Abstract:Goniomonads are commonly found heterotrophic biflagellates in both marine and freshwater environments. Despite the high genetic diversity inferred from 18S rDNA data, many goniomonad species remain undescribed. In this study, we established a total of 21 marine goniomonad culture strains, and from these, describe three new species by using light microscopy, electron microscopy, and 18S rDNA phylogeny. Molecular sequence analyses suggest the presence of several distinct sub-lineages within the marine goniomonad clade. Two of these are Goniomonas ulleungensis sp. nov. and G. lingua sp. nov., which are similar in size, flagellar length, appendage & orientation and by having a tongue-like protrusion at the anterior. The two species can be differentiated by the periplast plate pattern with G. ulleungensis displaying one additional plate on the right side. G. duplex sp. nov. differed from these two species by having two unequal flagella with the longer one trailing posteriorly and having the opposite cell orientation when skidding. Comparative analyses of five marine goniomonad species showed that genetically distinct goniomonad groups can be delineated by morphological data as well, and of several morphological features that are of taxonomic utility, the periplast plate pattern, observable by SEM, is particularly informative in goniomonad taxonomy.

Abstract:Freshwater bivalves play key ecological roles in lakes and rivers, largely contributing to healthy ecosystems. The freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, is found in Europe and on the East coast of North America. Once common in oxygenated streams, M. margaritifera is rapidly declining and consequently assessed as a threatened species worldwide. Deterioration of water quality has been considered the main factor for the mass mortality events affecting this species. Yet, the role of parasitic infections has not been investigated. Here, we report the discovery of three novel protist lineages found in Swedish populations of M. margaritifera belonging to one of the terrestrial groups of gregarines (Eugregarinorida, Apicomplexa). These lineages are closely related–but clearly separated–from the tadpole parasite Nematopsis temporariae. In one lineage, which is specifically associated with mortality events of M. margaritifera, we found cysts containing single vermiform zoites in the gills and other organs of diseased individuals using microscopy and in situ hybridization. This represents the first report of a parasitic infection in M. margaritifera that may be linked to the decline of this mussel species. We propose a tentative life cycle with the distribution of different developmental stages and potential exit from the host into the environment.

Abstract:The present study represents the first detailed description of the haptoral sclerites of Macrogyrodactylus clarii Gussev 1961. Light microscopy reveals outgrowths of the hamuli roots; two lateral spine-like extensions of the hood-like accessory sclerites; a ridged, fan-shaped distal end of an accessory sclerite; and two thread-like accessory sclerites with biforked ends associated with the pointed hooked region of each hamulus. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals the presence of parallel tubules in the root of the hamuli and structural differences along the length of the hamulus including the root, shaft, and pointed hooked region. The root consists of two layers, the shaft four layers and pointed hooked region only one layer with dense outer serrations. Characteristic features of the hamulus root are the presence of longitudinally orientated parallel tubules in its central core and parallel electron-dense ridges in the outer layer of its middle region; features not observed in either the shaft or the pointed hooked region. Each hamulus blade of M. clarii is associated with haptoral gland cells producing electron-dense secretory bodies. The 16 marginal hooklets each consist of a blade (sickle) articulating with a handle at the guard region and a domus. TEM revealed structural differences between the handle, the blade at the articulation region, and the distal hooked region. The domus, a filamentous thread-like sclerite at the light microscope level, consists of two electron-dense, fibrous thickenings connected to each other by a cytoplasmic process. Each marginal hooklet is associated with a small cavity and a large reservoir of homogeneous particles and secretory bodies. The possible functions of these structures are discussed in relation to equivalent features in other monogeneans.
