Abstract:Background: eating disorders are a group of conditions in which negative beliefs about food, body shape, and body weight together with behaviors such as restricted food intake, binge eating, excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, and use of laxatives. They can become serious, affect quality of life, and lead to multiple physical and even psychiatric complications with a fatal outcome. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the characteristics, epidemiology, and trends of eating disorders with updated information based on the most recent publications. Methods: we conducted a systematic literature search in Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Web of Science. The search terms were "anorexia nervosa", "bulimia nervosa", "binge eating disorders" and "epidemiology" both in titles and in abstracts. Results and conclusions: EDs generally occur in adolescents and young adults. The best characterized TCAs are anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (TA). Prevalence studies indicate wide differences by age group and sex, much higher in young women (NA, 0.1-2 %; BN, 0.37-2.98 %; BED, 0.62-4.45 %). The prevalence of EDs is 2.2 % (0.2-13.1 %) in Europe, 3.5 % (0.6-7.8 %) in Asia, and 4.6 % (2.0-13.5 %) in America. Comorbidity is high with psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and personality disorders.

Abstract:PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the recent literature on the incidence and prevalence of and mortality associated with eating disorders.RECENT FINDINGS: General-practice studies show that the overall incidence rates of anorexia nervosa remained stable during the 1990s, compared with the 1980s. Some evidence suggests that the occurrence of bulimia nervosa is decreasing. Anorexia nervosa is a common disorder among young white females, but is extremely rare among black females. Recent studies confirm previous findings of the high mortality rate within the anorexia nervosa population.SUMMARY: The incidence of anorexia nervosa is around eight per 100,000 persons per year. An upward trend has been observed in the incidence of anorexia nervosa in the past century till the 1970s. The most substantial increase was among females aged 15-24 years, for whom a significant increase was observed from 1935 to 1999. The average prevalence rates for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa among young females are 0.3 and 1%, respectively. Only a minority of people with eating disorders, especially with bulimia nervosa, are treated in mental healthcare.

Abstract:<p>This article presents current diagnostic conceptualisations of eating disorders, including new disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This is followed by contemporary findings in the epidemiology of eating disorders, their broad sociodemographic distribution and the increases in community prevalence. Advances and the current status of evidence‐based treatment and outcomes for the main eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and BED are discussed with focus on first‐line psychological therapies. Deficits in knowledge and directions for further research are highlighted, particularly with regard to treatments for BED and ARFID, how to improve treatment engagement and the management of osteopenia.</p>

Abstract:Objective To update the prevalence of eating disorders in the general population before 2021 and to analyze the distribution characteristics at different times and in different regions and sexes, as well as the diagnostic criteria. Methods Based on the method from a previous report by the authors, studies were identified from the following databases: PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, ISI Web of Knowledge, Ovid and the 4 most important Chinese databases. Articles in English and Chinese before 2021 were retrieved. The data retrieved at this time were pooled with the data from a previous report for analyses. Results Thirty-three studies were identified, which included 18 studies supplemented in this retrieval. The pooled lifetime and 12-month prevalence of eating disorders were 0.91% (95% CI, 0.48–1.71) and 0.43% (95% CI, 0.18–0.78), respectively. The pooled lifetime and 12-month prevalence of the subgroup EDs (any), which covers all types of eating disorders, were 1.69% and 0.72%, respectively. The lifetime prevalence of AN, BN and BED was 0.16% (95% CI, 0.06–0.31), 0.63% (95% CI, 0.33–1.02) and 1.53% (95% CI, 1.00–2.17), respectively. The lifetime prevalence of EDs in Western countries was 1.89%, and was high at 2.58% in females. Prevalence studies using DSM-5 criteria were scarce. Conclusions The prevalence of eating disorders might be underestimated thus far. Not all types of EDs were included in a majority of epidemiological surveys, and the prevalence rates of the new types of EDs were significantly higher. Eating disorders were especially common in Western countries and in females. New diagnostic criteria should be used to comprehensively assess all types of eating disorders. The landscape of eating disorders research: A 40-year bibliometric analysis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Employing bibliometric methods, the present study aimed to map out the general landscape of existing research on eating disorders (EDs) over the past decades. METHOD Using the Web of Science database, we retrieved 41,917 research articles related to EDs published from 1981 to 2020. After removing those without an abstract, a total of 37,446 articles were retained. The study outlined the distribution of scholarship by time, languages, regions, and countries, and identified major research lines by applying latent topic modelling. RESULTS Results revealed a general increasing trend in the number of publications on EDs research, and researchers from Western countries dominated the production of related scholarship. The distribution of published scholarship varied significantly by languages, regions, and countries. Seven main research topics emerged from past research (i.e., animal studies of food intake, risk factors and at-risk groups for eating disorders, body image in eating disorders, studies of cognition and brain in eating disorders, symptomatology and comorbidity of eating disorders, body weight and nutrition status in eating disorders, and treatment of eating disorders), with different topics showing unique research trends across the years. CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis presents the most complete up-to-date overview on published research on EDs. While there is an increasing trend for EDs research, the available research evidence is generally from Western countries; thus, it is suggested that cooperation on EDs research should be strengthened between Western countries and other countries in the future.

Systematic review of the epidemiology of eating disorders in the Arab world

Abstract:Purpose of review: The Arab world is dealing with modernization and sociocultural changes both associated with eating disorders. The present review provides an update of 'Eating disorders in the Arab world: a literature review', which was published in 2020. Recent findings: There are 22 recent epidemiological studies on eating disorders in five different countries in the Arab world. A large-scale national mental health survey reported a 12-month eating disorder prevalence of 3.2% and an eating disorder lifetime prevalence of 6.1%. Binge-eating disorder was the most common eating disorder (12-month prevalence = 2.1%, lifetime prevalence = 2.6%), 1.6% was at high risk for binge-eating disorder. Overall, between 23.8 and 34.8% was at high risk for any eating disorder. Body-shape dissatisfaction, a high BMI and separated/widowed/single marital status were associated with eating disorder pathology. Summary: Although there is still a lack of studies compared to the western world, the number of epidemiological studies on eating disorders in the Arab world is growing and there is an increase in studies using appropriate assessment-tools and norms. It is recommended to offer specialized treatment and to implement preventive programs.
Prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, suicide mortality in eating disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Eating disorders have a wide and profound impact on psychological and general health. The study aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide mortality in a variety of eating disorders. A systematic search was conducted using four databases from inception until April 2022, limiting the search to English-language. For each of the eligible studies, the prevalence of suicide-related issues in eating disorders was calculated. The prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury, suicide ideation, and suicide attempts was then calculated for each anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The random-effects method was used for the pool of studies. Fifty-two articles were used for this study and included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury is 40% with a confidence interval between 33–46% ( I 2 97.36%). The prevalence of suicide ideation is 51% with a confidence interval between 41–62% ( I 2 97.69%). The prevalence of suicide attempts is 22% with a confidence interval between 18–25% ( I 2 98.48%). The heterogeneity in the studies included in this meta-analysis was high. There is a high prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts in eating disorders. Thus, comorbidity between eating disorders and suicide issues is an important topic that can provide insights into etiology. Future studies must consider eating disorders along with other types of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and aggression.

Abstract:Eating disorders are a group of severe and potentially enduring psychiatric disorders associated with increased mortality. Compared to other severe mental illnesses, they have received relatively limited research attention. Epidemiological studies often only report relative measures despite these being difficult to interpret having limited practical use. The aims of this study were to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of diagnosed anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa, and eating disorder not otherwise specified recorded in Danish hospital registers and estimate both relative and absolute measures of subsequent mortality – both all-cause and cause-specific in a general nationwide population of 1,667,374 individuals. In a smaller, genetically informed case-cohort sample, the prediction of polygenic scores for AN, body fat percentage, and body mass index on AN prevalence and severity was estimated. Despite males being less likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder, those that do have significantly increased rates of mortality. AN prevalence was highest for individuals with high AN and low body fat percentage/body mass index polygenic scores.

[Epidemiology and risk factors of eating disorder in adolescence: a review]

Abstract:Introduction: Currently, there is a higher occurrence of biopsychosocial diseases, especially eating disorders, involving different body systems and aspects related to the individual and their social relations. Objective: Addressing current and relevant issues about the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for anorexia and bulimia nervosa in adolescence. Methods: Search the databases: MEDLINE, SciELO and LILACS for studies published on the epidemiology and risk factors for eating disorders in adolescence. Results: The highest incidence of anorexia and bulimia nervosa among girls in the middle and final phase of adolescence. Factors that increase the risk for the onset of eating disorders in adolescents are: genetics, body changes during puberty, the vulnerability of adolescents to the ideals of thinness, social pressures to be thin, body image dissatisfaction, restrictive diet, depression and low self-esteem. However, it is suggested that in different cultures, eating disorders may come from a number of conditions unrelated to compensatory behaviors or weight, but the shape of the body. Conclusions: Several factors determine the occurrence of anorexia and bulimia nervosa in adolescence, however, there is no consensus how these factors interact in this complex process, which indicates the need for further investigations.

This study examined rates of ED hospitalizations among children and youth in Canada from 2010 to 2022, by sex, age, province/territory, length of stay, discharge disposition and ED diagnosis.

Abstract:Introduction Schizophrenia is a common mental illness with a wide range of symptoms. Given the high metabolic comorbidity observed in schizophrenia and the metabolic side-effects induced by the antipsychotics used in practice, the detection of eating disorders is crucial. These disorders may occur at the same time as psychotic symptoms or independently of them. Objectives we aim to provide an overview of eating disorders in schizophrenia. Methods We conducted a systematic search using the 2 bibliographic databases PubMed and Google scholar including the following keywords: "Schizophrenia", "Eating disorders", "Reward mechanisms". Results Eating disorders are a frequent comorbidity in schizophrenia. Authors have reported that some patients with schizophrenia have an increased appetite and craving for fatty foods, increased caloric intake and frequency of consumption, which may be associated with increased disinhibition. According to the literature, binge eating and night eating are frequently observed in patients with schizophrenia, with a prevalence of around 10%. Studies have shown that people suffering from psychosis and treated with antipsychotics have high rates of binge eating, ranging from 4.4% to 16% for binge eating and from 8.9% to 45% for binge eating symptoms (without reaching the diagnostic threshold for binge eating). Rates ranging from 16.1% to 64% for cravings were reported. Anorexia nervosa appears to affect between 1% and 4% of schizophrenic patients. Conclusions Despite their frequent association with schizophrenia, eating disorders remain little studied. However, it is important to detect these disorders and elucidate the underlying psychopathological and neurobiological mechanisms in order to better manage metabolic comorbidity and improve patients' quality of life. Abstract:Eating disorder is a kind of complex multifactorial disease. Although the etiology of the disease is still not fully expounded, it is certain that its etiology is closely related to biological, psychological and sociocultural factors. It is helpful to make early predictions and interventions for patients with eating disorders by learning through the studies of risk factors for eating disorder, which is also meaningful to provide more guidance and evidence for clinical work. Guided by recent studies, this review summarizes recent findings and clarifies the latest identified risk factors for eating disorders in the main areas of biology, psychology, and sociocultural environment.
Trends in the prevalence and disability-adjusted life years of eating disorders from 1990 to 2017: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Abstract:Abstract Aim Eating disorders have increasingly become a public health concern globally. This study aimed to reveal the burden of eating disorders at the global, regional and national levels using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2017 data. Methods We extracted the age-standardised rates (ASRs) of prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and their 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, between 1990 and 2017 from the GBD 2017 data. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to quantify the secular trends of the burden of eating disorders. Results The ASRs of prevalence and the DALYs of eating disorders continuously increased worldwide from 1990 to 2017 by an average of 0.65 (95% UI: 0.59–0.71) and 0.66 (95% UI: 0.60–0.72), respectively. The burden of eating disorders was higher in females than in males, but the increment in ASRs was greater in males than in females over time. In 2017, the highest burden of eating disorders was observed in the high sociodemographic index (SDI) regions, especially Australasia (ASR of prevalence = 807.13, 95% UI: 664.20–982.30; ASR of DALYs = 170.74, 95% UI: 113.43–244.14, per 100 000 population), Western Europe and high-income North America. However, the most significant increment of the burden of eating disorders was observed in East Asia (EAPC for prevalence = 2.23, 95% UI: 2.14–2.32; EAPC for DALYs = 2.22, 95% UI: 2.13–2.31), followed by South Asia. An increasing trend in the burden of eating disorders at the national level was observed among most countries or territories. The countries with the top three highest increasing trends were Equatorial Guinea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and China. Positive associations were found between the burden estimates and the SDI levels in almost all geographic regions during the observed 28-year period. We also found that the human development indexes in 2017 were positively correlated with the EAPCs of the ASRs of prevalence (ρ = 0.222, P = 0.002) and DALYs (ρ = 0.208, P = 0.003). Conclusion The highest burden of eating disorders remains in the high-income western countries, but an increasing trend was observed globally and in all SDI-quintiles, especially in Asian regions that were highly populous. These results could help governments worldwide formulate suitable medical and health policies for the prevention and early intervention of eating disorders.

Abstract:"Background and Aim: Eating disorders are one of the most important issues in mental health that leading to many serious psychic and somatic problems and even death. These disorders were known for years as a disease of the western societies. Recent studies showed that they are also spreading in eastern countries. Limited studies are in Iran. The purpose of this study is to review the Iranian researches. The results of this study in Iran as a developing Asian country will helpful for other societies, especially similar Asian communities. Methods: The authors searched PubMed, ProQuest, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and SID and Magiran (In Persian) to find the relevant articles. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess the quality of research. Results: Twenty- nine studies reported the prevalence or occurrence of eating disorders among the Iranian population. The samples consisted of 40 to 30,532 subjects. Forty papers examined eating disorders among females. Twenty-seven studies were in both genders, and only one was in males. Most eating disorders have significantly varied depending on the different studies and tools used. Most of these articles studied young people. This study breaks the determinants into three parts: demographic, psychosocial, and miscellaneous factors. The incidence of eating disorders in Iran is on the rise. Conclusions: It should be considered a significant health problem. Moreover, despite a clear cultural difference, eating disorders' factors were similar to those in western communities. This matter may be an essential health issue. In addition, despite noticeable cultural differences, the factors affecting eating disorders were similar to those of western communities "
Global Research Trends, Top-100 Most Cited Studies, and Network Visualization of Eating and Feeding Disorders Research from 1900-2020: A Historical Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:Background: Eating disorders (EDs) are psychiatric disorders that leads to affect the health. In last few decades, EDs have been rising rapidly due to disturbed attitudes towards eating that play a critical role in the maintenance of EDs. This study was performed to assess key bibliometric indicators, visualize the research outcomes in the field, and find the current trends in EDs. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The obtained data was imported into Microsoft Excel 2019 and VOSviewer software for windows. The database search was performed for the period from the inception of WoSCC until 2020. The downloaded data was exported into VOSviewer software version 1.6.16 for Windows to construct co-authorship countries, keywords co-occurrence, and journal and organization sources network visualization. Results: The initial search yielded 16,693 publications, of which 11,322 articles were included in the overall analysis. Furthermore, the top-100 most cited papers were included based on number of citations in descending order. The average citation per year for overall publications (n=11,322) was 830.92 and that of top-100 most cited papers was 490.24. The study authored by Fairburn and Beglin in year 1994 received the highest citations (2,999). Among the top-100 highly cited articles, Fairburn CG was the most prolific author with 10 publications (6,254 citations). The frequently studied research area was psychiatry, and the leading source of publication was Archives of General Psychiatry with 20 published articles and 7,872 citations. The analysis of the overall articles indicted that International Journal of Eating Disorders got 2,500 publications and 88,921 citation score. The University of Minnesota was first in top-100 most cited articles for maximum number of publications (n=12) but from the overall analysis of all the articles, Harvard University was first with a total of 405 publications. The United States of America was the most prominent country with 58 number of documents. Conclusion: Majority of articles were produced by developed countries. Hence, there is a dire need for interdisciplinary research approaches to evaluate and intervene Eds. We believe that the highly cited articles in feed and EDs may help to some future novel ideas and regulate effective preventive strategies.
[Eating disorders after the political changes in the formerly communist Eastern-European countries]

Abstract:The authors summarize the Central and East European epidemiological data of eating disorders. These demonstrate that eating disorders are not exclusively characteristic to Western societies. In this respect the comparison of newer data to those which were performed before the political changes in 1989-1990 is especially valuable. Formerly in a Hungarian university sample the prevalence of bulimia was 1-1.3% among females, 0-0.8% among males, and this was higher than the prevalence of 0.6% in Austrian females, or 0% in German Democratic Republic. After the social changes similar data were found in several East European countries. This corroborates the culture-change idea of eating disorders. The transition to a Western market economy and the process of globalization is an experiment to evaluate the effect of sociocultural factors. The values and norms (e.g. thinness ideal) come closer to the Western culture, and mass media have a significant impact in this process.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Little population-based data exist on the prevalence or correlates of eating disorders.METHODS: Prevalence and correlates of eating disorders from the National Comorbidity Replication, a nationally representative face-to-face household survey (n = 9282), conducted in 2001-2003, were assessed using the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview.RESULTS: Lifetime prevalence estimates of DSM-IV anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder are .9%, 1.5%, and 3.5% among women, and .3% .5%, and 2.0% among men. Survival analysis based on retrospective age-of-onset reports suggests that risk of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder increased with successive birth cohorts. All 3 disorders are significantly comorbid with many other DSM-IV disorders. Lifetime anorexia nervosa is significantly associated with low current weight (body-mass index <18.5), whereas lifetime binge eating disorder is associated with current severe obesity (body-mass index > or =40). Although most respondents with 12-month bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder report some role impairment (data unavailable for anorexia nervosa since no respondents met criteria for 12-month prevalence), only a minority of cases ever sought treatment.CONCLUSIONS: Eating disorders, although relatively uncommon, represent a public health concern because they are frequently associated with other psychopathology and role impairment, and are frequently under-treated.

Abstract:Previous studies have used a query-based approach to search and gather scientific literature. Instead, the current study focused on domain-specific journals in the field of eating disorders. A total of 8651 documents (since 1981 to 2020), from which 7899 had an abstract, were retrieved from: International Journal of Eating Disorders (n = 4185, 48.38%), Eating and Weight Disorders (n = 1540, 17.80%), European Eating Disorders Review (n = 1461, 16.88%), Eating Disorders (n = 1072, 12.39%), and Journal of Eating Disorders (n = 393, 4.54%). To analyze these data, diverse methodologies were employed: bibliometrics (to identify top cited documents), network analysis (to identify the most representative scholars and collaboration networks), and topic modeling (to retrieve major topics using text mining, natural language processing, and machine learning algorithms). The results showed that the most cited documents were related to instruments used for the screening and evaluation of eating disorders, followed by review articles related to the epidemiology, course and outcome of eating disorders. Network analysis identified well-known scholars in the field, as well as their collaboration networks. Finally, topic modeling identified 10 major topics whereas a time series analysis of these topics identified relevant historical shifts. This study discusses the results in terms of future opportunities in the field of eating disorders.

The association between eating disorders and mental health: an umbrella review

Abstract:Objective: There have been an increasing number of systematic reviews indicating the association between eating disorders (ED), including its risk factors, with mental health problems such as depression, suicide and anxiety. The objective of this study was to conduct an umbrella review of these reviews and provide a top-level synthesis of the current evidence in this area. Method: A systematic search was performed using four databases (MEDLINE Complete, APA PyscInfo, CINAHL Complete and EMBASE). The inclusion criteria were systematic reviews (with or without meta-analysis), published in the English language between January 2015 and November 2022. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools for use of JBI Systematic reviews. Results: A total of 6,537 reviews were identified, of which 18 reviews met the inclusion criteria, including 10 reviews with meta-analysis. The average quality assessment score for the included reviews was moderate. Six reviews investigated the association between ED and three specific mental health problems: (a) depression and anxiety, (b) obsessive-compulsive symptoms and (c) social anxiety. A further 3 reviews focused on the relationship between ED and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) while 2 reviews focused on ED and suicidal-related outcomes. The remaining 7 reviews explored the association between ED and bipolar disorders, personality disorders, and non-suicidal self-injury. Depression, social anxiety and ADHD are likely to have a stronger strength of association with ED relative to other mental health problems. Discussion: Mental health problems such as depression, social anxiety and ADHD were found to be more prevalent among people suffering from eating disorders. Further research is necessary to understand the mechanism and health impacts of potential comorbidities of ED.
