A New Genus Record of Phyllobothriidae from Marine Fish Dasyatis Akajei in China

Abstract:Rhodobothrium pulvinatum, one species of Phyllobothriidae (Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea) from marine fish Dasyatis akajei in Xiamen, Fujian, China was reported. The genus Rhodobothrium Linton, 1889 was erected for R. pulvinatum from the intestine of Dasyatis kuhli. which was new genus record in China, Dasyatis akajei was also a new record of host. 46 of Dasyatis akajei were examined, 2 of which were infected with cestode, the infective rate was 4. 3%, the infective intensity of the cestode was 5-7, the description of the worm is provided in the present paper.
Past and Present Distribution and Hosts of Longidorus (nematoda: Dorylaimida) in Mainland China

Abstract:The geographical distribution and host associations of Longidorus in mainland China were determined from a comprehensive survey. Among 2,103 soil samples collected from 12 provinces of China during 2008–2010, nine Longidorus species were identified based on morphological characters: L. henanus Xu & Cheng 1992; L. litchii Xu & Cheng 1992; L. hangzhouensis Zheng et al. 2001; L. pisi Edward, Misra & Singh 1964; L. macromucronatus Siddiqi 1962; L. fangi Xu & Cheng 1991; L. camelliae Zheng et al. 2000; L. jonesi Siddiqi 1962; and L. fursti Heyns et al. 1987. In this study, we compile new data on the distribution and hosts of Longidorus in China and the available historical records reported from China. Longidorus henanus has the most widespread distribution in China, while L. litchii is found only in Fujian province, and L. pisi is recorded for the first time in China. The hosts of the genus Longidorus in mainland China included 39 known and 3 unknown plant genera, all of which are perennial woody plants. No records were from cultivated annual crops.
Prevalence, intensity, and abundance of infection and pathogenesis caused by diphyllobothriosis in vulnerable, native fish and introduced trout in Lake Panguipulli, Chile

Abstract:Diphyllobothriosis in fish from freshwater ecosystems in southern Chile was first reported in 1949. Infection by plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium latum and Diphyllobothrium dendriticum occurs in introduced trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and native fish. We determined the prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance of seasonal infection and tissue damage produced by Diphyllobothrium spp. in native fish (Percichthys trucha, Odontesthes mauleanum, and Basilichthys australis) and introduced trout (O. mykiss) from Lake Panguipulli, Chile. Prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance of D. latum infection were significantly greater in trout than they were in native fish. Prevalence and mean abundance were similar in O. mauleanum and P. trucha, but they were greater than those in B. australis. Prevalence and abundance were similar among seasons between sexes for the four hosts. For all host species, except P. trucha, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between host length and the abundance of plerocercoids. Infections in muscle tissue were present in 61% of trout compared with 23% in O. mauleanum and 12% in P. trucha, suggesting a greater risk for human infection when consuming trout. In general, prevalence of infection by D. dendriticum was lower than was D. latum prevalence. Encapsulation of plerocercoids was common and severe in 71% of the trout examined. Only slight encapsulation of plerocercoids was found in the native O. mauleanum, and no encapsulation was observed in P. trucha or B. australis. The greater concentration of plerocercoids in the walls of the digestive tract of trout suggests a more-rapid immune response in trout than in native fish. The low frequency of encapsulation of plerocercoids in native fish would mean greater tissue damage in the natives than that observed in the trout because they are free to migrate among the viscera, potentially endangering these native fish populations in regions where Diphyllobothrium spp. are endemic.

Abstract:In recent years there have been several accounts of the occurrence of diclidophoroidean trematodes parasitic on the gills of fishes, e.g. Price (1943), Sproston (1946), Dawes (1947), Brinkmann (1952), and Chauhan (1953), and these accounts have included descriptions of the morphology of the parasites. The distribution records have revealed a generally high degree of host specificity and, in some species, a preference even for certain gill arches of the particular hosts, while the morphological descriptions have shown that there is a considerable variation in the form of the parasites, extending to various degrees of deviation from bilateral symmetry (PI. I, figs. 1–11). These morpho-logical variations are present in spite of the fact that the different parasites occupy such broadly similar habitats in the gill chambers of their respective hosts. But, as far as I am aware, this is the first attempt to investigate the distribution and morphology of the parasites in relation to their micro-habitats.

Abstract:The cause of diphyllobothriosis in 5 persons in Harbin and Shanghai, China, during 2008-2011, initially attributed to the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium latum, was confirmed as D. nihonkaiense by using molecular analysis of expelled proglottids. The use of morphologic characteristics alone to identify this organism was inadequate and led to misidentification of the species.

Abstract:Diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis in South America, is mainly caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus Nybelin, 1931, a parasite of considerable concern in fishery resources due to its impact on public health. A new diphyllobothrid, Diphyllobothrium sprakeri Hernández-Orts et al. Parasites Vectors 14:219, 2021, was recently described from sea lions from the Pacific Coast, but marine fish acting as intermediate hosts are unknown. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of plerocercoid larvae of Diphyllobothriidae Lühe, 1910 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) in nine fish species of commercial importance in Peru. Of a total of 6999 fish (5861 Engraulis ringens , 853 Sciaena deliciosa , 6 Sciaena callaensis , 171 Scomber japonicus, 40 Trachurus murphyi, 40 Ariopsis seemanni, 18 Merluccius peruanus, 5 Sarda chiliensis , and 5 Coryphaena hippurus ), 183 were infected with plerocercoid larvae, representing a total prevalence of 2.61% and a mean intensity of 3.2. Based on mtDNA cox1 sequences of 43 plerocercoids, a phylogenetic analysis revealed that 41 belong to A . pacificus and two to D . sprakeri. These findings are first molecular data for D . sprakeri larvae, and the infections of E. ringens and T. murphyi by plerocercoid larvae represent the first records of intermediate/paratenic hosts for this species. Hence, the findings of the current study enhance our understanding of the presence of diphyllobothriid species in commercial fish from the Southeastern Pacific Ocean and their potential impact on seafood safety for local human populations.

Abstract:Between 1898 and 1940, eight human cases of diphyllobothriasis were reported in Argentina, always in recently arrived European immigrants. In 1982, the first autochthonous case was detected, and since then, 33 other autochthonous cases have been reported, totaling 42 cases of human diphyllobothriasis in Argentina before the present study. Our aim is to update the information on diphyllobothriasis in Argentina by identifying specimens from new cases using morphometrical and/or molecular methods. We also aim to assess the epidemiological relevance of this food-borne disease in the country. Anamnestic data were obtained from patients or professionals, along with 26 worms identified using morphometrical (21 samples) and molecular techniques (5 samples). All the patients acquired the infection by consuming freshwater salmonids caught in Andean lakes in Northern Patagonia. Morphometrics and DNA markers of worms were compatible with Dibothriocephalus latus . In total, 68 human cases have been detected in Argentina, 60 of which were autochthonous. The human population living North-western Patagonia, whose lakes are inhabited by salmonids, is increasing. Similarly, the number of other definitive hosts for Dibothriocephalus dendriticus (gulls) and for D. latus (dogs) is also increasing. In addition, salmonid fishing and the habit of consuming home-prepared raw fish dishes are becoming widespread. Therefore, it is to be expected that diphyllobothriasis in Argentina will increase further.

Abstract:Tapeworms of the genus Spirometra Faust, Campbell et Kellogg, 1929 have long been known as intestinal parasites of carnivores and their larvae (spargana) have been found in various vertebrates. Nevertheless, their species diversity, host associations and geographical distribution remain poorly understood. Molecular data clearly confirm the validity of the genus, which has been synonymised by several authors with Diphyllobothrium Cobbold, 1858. Despite morphological similarities between the species of the two genera, they are not closely related and also differ in their life cycle. The present review provides a list of the species recognised as valid and additional genotypes that may represent other species, with a basic characterisation of each taxon and comments on their validity, the probable range of definitive and intermediate hosts, and their distribution. The existing taxonomic problems and the insufficient knowledge of the host specificity and distribution of Spirometra tapeworms can only be solved by combining molecular and morphological data, i.e. by comparing genetically characterised specimens with corresponding morphological vouchers (hologenophores). Further targeted sampling and surveys are required to clarify the distribution and host associations.

Abstract:This monograph presents complex data on Fascioloides magna from all aspects of its research (general information, distribution, spectrum of hosts) and summarizes the latest information on molecular structure of informative genes which were recently applied in resolving taxonomy and biogeography of this veterinary important parasite. The giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, is important liver parasite of free-living and domestic ruminants. Due to its biology, distribution, medical impact, and invasive character, this liver fluke attracts attention of wide spectrum of specialists – veterinary doctors, hunters and farmers, as well as scientists. The parasite utilizes wide range of free living and domestic ruminants as definitive hosts, with various pathological impacts ranging from moderate infections towards lethal effects. Fascioloides magna is of North American origin where it occurs in five enzootic regions. It was introduced to Europe along with its deer hosts in 19th century and it has established three permanent natural foci. The giant liver fluke represents an outstanding model for studying the origin, spatial distribution, migratory routs, and invasion processes of introduced species.

Abstract:Snails of the genus Bithynia , whose primary habitat is slow-flowing ponds and ditches, serve as the first intermediate hosts of liver fluke. Currently, approximately 200 million individuals worldwide are at risk of liver fluke infection, yet questions still persist regarding the taxonomic identification of Bithynia genus, a crucial player in the transmission of this disease. Accurate taxonomic classification of the Bithynia genus could significantly enhance current understanding of the disease's transmission mechanisms. In this article we comprehensively review the extensive research conducted on Bithynia genus, spanning past inquiries up to the latest findings. The primary emphasis is placed on exploring the taxonomic identification of this genus within various technological settings. We then present a consolidated analysis of the morphological taxonomic identification methods, highlighting their strengths and limitations. We also introduce a novel perspective on the future direction of identification and classification efforts for the members of this genus, emphasizing the crucial role Bithynia plays in the epidemiological cycle of liver fluke transmission. We conclude by urging researchers to prioritize the significance of the members of this genus in the epidemiological cycle of liver fluke transmission and in control measures for disease dissemination, within the context of the vector organisms.

Abstract:Trematodes and their snail hosts have developed intimate parasite-host associations, with snails supporting a diverse and often species-specific trematode fauna. In the faucet snail, Bithynia tentaculata (Caenogastropoda, Littorinimorpha), a unique trematode fauna has been recorded recently. However, knowledge of the exact species identity, phylogenetic relationships, and geographical distribution remains limited as many of the species belong to groups with unclear or controversial taxonomical assignment. To contribute to our knowledge of the trematodes, we investigated the trematode fauna of B. tentaculata by examining a total of 556 snails from lakes in County Galway, Ireland. Using an integrative taxonomic approach including DNA sequence data analyses (28S rRNA gene, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, ITS2, cox1, nad1) and morphological tools (taxonomical drawings and measurements), we identified nine trematode species of seven families, with seven species occurring as cercariae (Cyathocotyle prussica, Lecithodendrium linstowi, Lecithodendrium sp., Asymphylodora progenetica, Sphaerostoma bramae, Metorchis xanthosomus, and Notocotylus sp.) and three species occurring as metacercariae (A. progenetica, Parasymphylodora parasquamosa, and Sphaeridiotrema sp.). Except for S. bramae, all are new species records for Ireland and provide the most western distribution of these trematodes in Europe. The trematode species recorded are known to use a wide range of definitive hosts and have a wide geographical distribution; among them are species members of genera that are zoonotic (Metorchis) and pathogenic to wildlife (Cyathocotyle, Sphaeridiotrema, and Notocotylus). There remains an ongoing need for precise identification of the trematode species to ensure that wider ecological contexts are correctly understood and biodiversity and disease threats can be accurately evaluated.

Abstract:We propose Dulcitransversotrema n. gen. for the freshwater transversotrematids Dulcitransversotrema patialense (Soparkar, 1924) n. comb. and Dulcitransversotrema chauhani (Agrawal and Singh, 1960) n. comb. Dulcitransversotrema is unique by the combination of lacking an oral sucker and an extensively coiled uterus as well as having testes that are not deeply lobed and that abut or nearly abut the inner posterolateral margins of the digestive tract (vs. deeply lobed testes that abut the cyclocoel region of the digestive tract only or that do not abut the ceca), a pre-oral genital pore (vs. post-oral genital pore), an ovary that is anterior to and abuts or nearly abuts the sinistral testis (vs. an ovary that is separated from the sinistral testis by some distance or having an ovary that is median and immediately pre-testicular), non-embryonated eggs (vs. embryonated eggs), typically having none or sparse vitelline follicles between the testes and ceca (vs. having a wholly inter-cecal vitellarium comprising a pair of highly compacted clusters of vitelline follicles anterolateral to the testes or having numerous vitelline follicles between the testes and ceca), an oblong, median, and primarily inter-testicular vitelline reservoir (vs. an extensively elongate, pre-testicular vitelline reservoir that arches anteriorly around the sinistral testis), and a subterminal excretory pore opening on the dorsal body surface between the level of the cyclocoel and posterior body end (vs. a terminal excretory pore). We describe the redia and cercaria of Dulcitransversotrema cf. patialense from the red-rimmed melania snail, Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) (Cerithioidea: Thiaridae), and their corresponding adult from beneath the scales of the zebrafish, Danio rerio (Hamilton, 1822) (Cypriniformes: Danionidae). All hosts were sampled from a spring-fed earthen pond at a private aquaculture facility near Ruskin, Florida. No transversotrematid life cycle was known from North America previously. The large subunit ribosomal DNA and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 sequences of D. cf. patialense from Florida were most similar to those from D. patialense infecting red-rimmed melania from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and differed by 134 and 69 nucleotides, respectively. Both phylogenetic analyses recovered Dulcitransversotrema as monophyletic and sister to a clade comprising Transversotrema spp. plus Crusziella formosa Cribb, Bray, and Barker, 1992.
The Botfly, A Tropical Menace: A Distinctive Myiasis Caused by Dermatobia hominis

Abstract:Dermatobia hominis, also known as the human botfly, is native to tropical and subtropical Central and South America and seen in travelers from endemic to temperate regions including the United States and Europe. Cutaneous infestation botfly myiasis involves the development of D. hominis larvae in the skin and is common in tropical locations. The distinct appearance of a cutaneous D. hominis infestation facilitates early diagnosis and intervention where cases are common. However, the identification of D. hominis in temperate regions may prove challenging due to its rarity. D. hominis may be misdiagnosed as folliculitis, an epidermal cyst, or an embedded foreign object with secondary impetigo. One should have a heightened suspicion in someone returning from a vacation in an endemic area, such as Belize. Here we describe the presentation, differential diagnosis, and treatment and encourage enhanced preventative measures among tourists when visiting tropical and subtropical regions. Additionally, we propose a novel classification system for assessing the various stages of infestation and suggest that patients reporting travel to Latin America and experiencing pain disproportionate to an insect bite should lead physicians to consider myiasis caused by D. hominis.
Helminths collected from some freshwater fishes and amphibians in Ecuador and Venezuela

Abstract:The present paper comprises a systematic survey of helminths (trematodes, an acanthocephalan and nematodes) found in nine species of freshwater fishes in Ecuador collected in March 1999 and those (a trematode and acanthocephalans) collected from an amphibian and two species of freshwater fishes in Venezuela in 1992, 1996 and 2001. The following 17 helminth species were recorded: Trematoda: Prosthenhystera ornamentosa sp. n., P. obesa (Diesing, 1850), Crassicutis intermedius (Szidat, 1954), C. cichlasomae Manter, 1936 and Glypthelmins eleutherodactyli sp. n. Acanthocephala: Quadrigyrus torquatus Van Cleave, 1920, Gracilisentis variabilis (Diesing, 1851) and Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) ecuadoris sp. n. Nematoda: Cosmoxynema vianai Travassos, 1949, Travnema travnema Pereira, 1938, Touzeta ecuadoris Petter, 1987, Sprentascaris hypostomi Petter et Cassone, 1984, Sprentascaris sp., Contracaecum sp. Type 1 larvae, Contracaecum sp. Type 2 larvae, Procamallanus (Procamallanus) peraccuratus Pinto, Noronha et Rolas, 1976 and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) sp. juv. Nearly all of these parasites are reported from Ecuador or Venezuela for the first time and many of these findings represent new host records. The new species P. ornamentosa sp. n. was collected from the gall-bladder of an unidentified anostomid (Anostomidae, Characiformes) in Ecuador, G. eleutherodactyli sp. n. from the digestive tract of the frog Eleutherodactylus sp. (Eleutherodactylidae, Anura) in Venezuela and N. (N.) ecuadoris sp. n. from the intestine of Lebiasina sp. (Lebiasinidae, Characiformes) in Ecuador. Most parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed.

Abstract:The morphology of the different larval stages and life cycle of Hypoderaeum conoideum (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) are described. The freshwater snail species Lymnaea peregra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) serves as the natural first intermediate host and this and L. corvus serve as experimental first intermediate hosts. These and other freshwater snails, such as Physella acuta and Gyraulus chinensis, in turn serve as second intermediate hosts. Adult worms were obtained from chicks and ducks, but not from rats, mice and golden hamsters. The morphology of the larval stages is compared with previous work on H. conoideum. Several aspects of the biology of the life history stages are described with emphasis on the transmission dynamics of the free-living stages. Differential suitability of the snail species that may act as first and/or second intermediate hosts is studied and discussed.

Abstract:Furcocercariae, of the trematodes from the family Diplostomidae, were found in freshwater snails—Radix auricularia, which were collected in a reservoir located on Popov Island (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). The life cycle was experimentally reproduced for the first time, while morphometric data for the development stages were studied and described for the newly discovered trematode. Moreover, molecular data for nuclear and mitochondrial markers were also obtained. It was determined that the morphometric characteristics of the trematode coincided with the species Diplostomum cf. vanelli, the molecular data analysis validates the species independence. Furthermore, the study highlights the issue of species identification in the Diplostomum genus.

The following 15 trematode species were recorded: Adults: Genarchella venezuelaensis sp. n., Thometrema dissimilis sp. n., Megacoelium spinicavum Thatcher et Varella, 1981, Doradamphistoma bacuense Thatcher, 1999, Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936, Parspina carapo Ostrowski de Núñez, Arredonto et Gil de Pertierra, 2011, Phyllodistomoides hoplerythrini sp. n. Larvae (metacercariae): Clinostomatopsis sorbens (Braun, 1899), Clinostomum marginatum (Rudolphi, 1819), C. detruncatum Braun, 1899, Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum (Diesing, 1850), Odhneriotrema microcephala (Travassos, 1922), Tylodelphys sp., Posthodiplostomum sp., Sphincterodiplostomum sp. All these parasites are reported from Venezuela for the first time and many of these findings represent new host records. The new species G. venezuelaensis sp. n., T. dissimilis sp. n. and P. hoplerythrini sp. n. were collected from the accessory respiratory organ of Loricariichthys brunneus (Hancock) (Loricariidae), from the stomach of Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Spix et Agassiz) (Erythrinidae) and from the intestine of H. unitaeniatus, respectively. All parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Megacoelium spinispecum Thatcher et Varella, 1981 is considered a junior synonym of M. spinicavum Thatcher et Varella, 1981, and Crassicutis opisthoseminis Bravo-Hollis et Arroyo, 1962 as a junior synonym of C. cichlasomae Manter, 1936.

Abstract:Despite their high pathogenicity, limited knowledge is available on intrahost migration pathways and microhabitat distribution of pseudaliid lungworms. In this study, the distribution of Halocercus delphini in the lungs of the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, was analyzed on three scales: between the right and left lungs, within the lungs, and between worm clusters. Evidence of a relationship between the distribution of H. delphini and the perfusion of the lungs of S. coeruleoalba is provided by the consistent correlation of these two factors, both on a longitudinal scale and by the difference in parasite burden between the left and right lung. This relationship, when coupled with the nested pattern of colonization, suggests that this species, like many other metastrongyloids, migrates to the lungs via the circulatory system. Additionally, the concentration of lungworms around the major airways could be a further reflection of the well‐perfused nature of these passageways. Equally, this distribution could be a strategy to minimize the distance that larvae must travel to exit the lungs via the trachea, as do most other metastrongyloids. On a more localized scale, the tendency of H. delphini to form distinct heterosexual clusters even at low infection intensities indicates active mate‐seeking behavior for reproduction.
