Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a critical material for two systems of next-generation advanced lithium batteries. However, its practical applications are seriously impeded by its expensive price due to its troublesome storage and problematic production. Herein we report the synthesis of Li2S by thermally reducing lithium sulfate with hydrogen. Compared with the industrial approach of carbothermal reduction, this new method using a gaseous reductant is advantageous because of emitting zero amount of carbon oxides, having no solid byproducts or precursor residuals, generating only one environmentally benign and recyclable byproduct of water, and not requiring postsynthesis purification. Those features make this method cost-effective and easy for material storage. Moreover, the actual synthesis involves many parasitic reactions, which surprisingly do not cause real troubles for producing high-purity Li2S. Furthermore, compared with the commercial Li2S, the as-synthesized Li2S demonstrates superior performance when used as the cathode material in lithium–sulfur batteries and as the precursor to make sulfide solid electrolyte Li6PS5Cl for all-solid-state lithium batteries. Therefore, this green method enables paving the way for practical sustainable applications of Li2S.

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a highly desired material for advanced batteries. However, its current industrial production is not suitable for large-scale applications in the long run because the process is carbon-emissive, energy-intensive, and cost-ineffective. This article demonstrates a new method that can overcome these challenges by reacting lithium sulfate (Li2SO4) with sodium sulfide. This approach, which seems unfeasible initially because Li2SO4 is barely soluble in ethanol at room temperature, becomes feasible when heated ethanol and an excess amount of Li2SO4 are used. More interestingly, product purification is easier than that in other metathetic reactions, thanks to the poor solubility of Li2SO4. In order to further minimize the overall costs of producing Li2S, the concomitant byproduct LiNaSO4 and the unfinished precursor Li2SO4 are converted into more valuable materials, Li2CO3 and Na2SO4. Moreover, the homemade Li2S is competitive with the commercial Li2S in cathode performance and gains further enhancement when being composited with the Co9S8 catalyst. Thus, this Li2SO4-based metathesis of Li2S has great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity, abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. Herein, hydrangea-like ZnS-carbon composite (ZnS-NC) is synthesized through the hydrothermal method and subsequent pyrolysis of a supramolecular precursor guanosine. The resulting composite comprises ultrafine ZnS nanoparticles firmly stabilized onto a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, featuring mesoporous channels and high surface areas. When utilized as an anode material for LIBs, the initial discharging specific capacity of the ZnS-NC electrode reaches an impressive 944 mA h g−1 at 1.0 A g−1, and even after 450 cycles, it maintains a reversible capacity of 597 mA h g−1. Compared with pure ZnS, the ZnS-NC composite exhibits significantly improved rate performance and cycling stability. This enhancement in Li-storage performance can be attributed to a synergistic effect within the ZnS-NC composite, which arises from the large exposed active site area, efficient ion/electron transfer, and strong interaction between the ZnS nanoparticles and the carbon framework. Overall, this work presents an eco-friendly approach to developing metal sulfide-carbon composites with exceptional potential for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Li-S batteries have been regarded as one of the most promising alternatives of the next-generation Li batteries. However, the dissolution and shuttling of lithium polysulfides lead to low cycle stability and low Coulombic efficiency, which intensively hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. Herein, we propose a strategy to simultaneously promote the redox kinetics and inhibit the shuttle of lithium polysulfides, through in situ synthesis of insoluble organopolysulfides by adding a special additive. Attractively, the thus-formed insoluble organopolysulfides in the form of nanoparticle aggregates are also capable of adsorbing unconverted lithium polysulfides and hence effectively spatially suppress the shuttle effect. Furthermore, the organopolysulfides served as active redox mediators, showing faster redox kinetics of S chemistry than that of lithium polysulfides. As a result, the Li-S batteries showed impressive capacity, improved rate performance, and long cycling stability even under lean-electrolyte and high sulfur loading conditions.

Abstract:This work presents a facile synthesis approach for core-shell structured Li2S nanoparticles with Li2S as the core and Li3PS4 as the shell. This material functions as lithium superionic sulfide (LSS) cathode for long-lasting, energy-efficient lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The LSS has an ionic conductivity of 10(-7) S cm(-1) at 25 °C, which is 6 orders of magnitude higher than that of bulk Li2S (∼10(-13) S cm(-1)). The high lithium-ion conductivity of LSS imparts an excellent cycling performance to all-solid Li-S batteries, which also promises safe cycling of high-energy batteries with metallic lithium anodes.

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is the critical raw material for the synthesis of sulfide solid state electrolyte, and its high cost and pollution restricts the commercialization of sulfide solid state electrolyte and sulfide based all-solid-state batteries. A new green and cost-effective method for synthesis high-quality Li2S is designed and proposed in this work. The method of reducing Li2SO4 with H2 avoids the disadvantages of many side reactions, complicated purification process, impure products and emission of greenhouse gases (CO, CO2) in traditional carbothermal reduction methods, and high purity Li2S (H-Li2S) is obtained. Then H-Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4 solid electrolyte was synthesized and compared with the electrolyte C-Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4 synthesized by commercial Li2S (C-Li2S). The ionic conductivity (8.06 mS cm-1) and chemical/electrochemical stability to cathode/anode were better than those of C-Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4. Besides, the rate performance and long cycle stability of all-solid-state lithium battery NCM//Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4//Li-In assembled with H-Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4 is better than those assembled with C-Li5.6PS4.6Cl1.4. It can maintain a discharge capacity of 133.23 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 1C (95% of the initial discharge capacity), and has high discharge capacity of 127.9 mAh g-1 at 3C. The high electrochemical performance of the all-solid-state battery verifies the high purity of H-Li2S and the advantages of hydrogen reduction method.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries are among the most promising candidates for next-generation rechargeable lithium batteries in view of recent progress on sulfur–carbon composite cathodes. However, further progress on such batteries is hampered by their concomitant need for a metallic lithium anode, which introduces new challenges associated with uneven electrodeposition and lithium dendrite formation. Here we report a method of creating lithium sulfide–carbon composites as cathode materials, which can be paired with high-capacity anodes other than metallic lithium. Lithium sulfide is dispersed in a porous carbon matrix, which serves to improve its electrical conductivity and provides a framework for sequestration of sulfur and lithium polysulfides. The in situ synthesis approach allows facile, scalable synthesis of lithium sulfide–carbon composite materials that exhibit improved electrochemical properties. We also investigate the effect of lithium polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte on the stability and cycling behavior of Li2S–carbon composite cathodes.
Facile Synthesis of Lithium Sulfide Nanocrystals for Use in Advanced Rechargeable Batteries.

Abstract:This work reports a new method of synthesizing anhydrous lithium sulfide (Li2S) nanocrystals and demonstrates their potential as cathode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. Li2S is synthesized by reacting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) with lithium naphthalenide (Li-NAP), a thermodynamically spontaneous reaction that proceeds to completion rapidly at ambient temperature and pressure. The process completely removes H2S, a major industrial waste, while cogenerating 1,4-dihydronaphthalene, itself a value-added chemical that can be used as liquid fuel. The phase purity, morphology, and homogeneity of the resulting nanopowders were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The synthesized Li2S nanoparticles (100 nm) were assembled into cathodes, and their performance was compared to that of cathodes fabricated using commercial Li2S micropowders (1-5 μm). Electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the synthesized Li2S were superior in terms of (dis)charge capacity, cycling stability, output voltage, and voltage efficiency.

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is considered as an attractive cathode material for Li/S batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity. In order to overcome its poor conductivity, Li2S is often compounded with carbon materials. However, the composites prepared by the traditional physical mixing method have low loading content, poor dispersion, large particle size of Li2S and lack of binding effects for polysulfides shuttle. Herein, we prepare nano-sized Li2S/graphene aerogel composite by in-situ lithiation of nano-S precursor. The Li2S loading in this composite is high (69.0 wt%) and variable, the nanoscaled particle size (ca. 10 nm) retains well from the elemental S precursor and disperses evenly on the three-dimensional porous graphene aerogel. More importantly, COS chemical bonding is retained between Li2S and graphene skeleton, thus the dissolution of polysulfide species and the shuttle effect can be effectively suppressed. After the lithiation process, the specific surface area is also unexpectedly increased by a factor of 10, greatly improving the lithium ion transport path, and contributing to an increase in rate performance. As a result, the in-situ lithiated Li2S/graphene aerogel composite exhibits higher specific capacity and stability compared to that via ex-situ infiltration route.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, known for their high energy density, are attracting extensive research interest as a promising next-generation energy storage technology. However, their widespread use has been hampered by certain issues, including the dissolution and migration of polysulfides, along with sluggish redox kinetics. Metal sulfides present a promising solution to these obstacles regarding their high electrical conductivity, strong chemical adsorption with polysulfides, and remarkable electrocatalytic capabilities for polysulfide conversion. In this review, the recent progress on the utilization of metal sulfide for suppressing polysulfide shuttling in Li-S batteries is systematically summarized, with a special focus on sulfur hosts and functional separators. The critical roles of metal sulfides in realizing high-performing Li-S batteries have been comprehensively discussed by correlating the materials' structure and electrochemical performances. Moreover, the remaining issues/challenges and future perspectives are highlighted. By offering a detailed understanding of the crucial roles of metal sulfides, this review dedicates to contributing valuable knowledge for the pursuit of high-efficiency Li-S batteries based on metal sulfides.

Abstract:Although tremendous progress has been made in preparing sulfur nanoparticles to achieve high-rate lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the synthetic methods involved are usually toxic, complicated and costly. To solve the above problem, a simple and green method through high pressure steam is developed to prepare sulfur nanoparticles (<10 nm) on graphene (nano S/G) as high-performance cathode of Li-S batteries. Owing to the nano-size effect, the nano S/G based Li-S battery exhibits enhanced charge transfer kinetics, achieving a high reversible capacity of 639 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at the high rate of 5 C. More impressively, at an ultra-high rate of 10 C, the nano S/G based Li-S battery can still deliver a stable capacity of 527 mAh g-1. It's believed that this facile and environmental-friendly cathode preparation method for high-rate performance will boost the commercialization of Li-S batteries.
