Abstract:We review recent results on the anomalous transport in one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional systems with bulk and surface disorder. Main attention is paid to the role of long-range correlations in random potentials for the bulk scattering, and in corrugated profiles for the surface scattering. It is shown that with a proper choice of correlations one can construct such a disorder that results in a selective transport with given properties. A particular interest is in the possibility to arrange windows of a complete transparency (or reflection) in the dependence on the wave number of incoming classical waves or electrons.

Abstract:Fundamental concepts in the quasi-one-dimensional geometry of disordered wires and random waveguides in which ideas of scaling and the transmission matrix were first introduced are reviewed. We discuss the use of the transmission matrix to describe the scaling, fluctuations, delay time, density of states, and control of waves propagating through and within disordered systems. Microwave measurements, random matrix theory calculations, and computer simulations are employed to study the statistics of transmission and focusing in single samples and the scaling of the probability distribution of transmission and transmittance in random ensembles. Finally, we explore the disposition of the energy density of transmission eigenchannels inside random media.
Localization of Wave Propagation in Disordered Periodic Structures

Abstract:A structure designed to be spatially periodic in its configuration cannot be exactly periodic due to material, geometric, and manufacturing variabilities. Such variabilities are random, and their presence (often referred to as disorder) can reduce the ability of the structure to transmit waves from one location to another. The phenomenon is known as vibration confinement or localization. A new perturbation scheme is developed in this paper on the basis of probability theory to calculate the average exponential decay rate of wave transmission with respect to the distance of transmission, called the localization factor. Account is also taken of structural damping. The new scheme permits successive improvement of accuracy, making it applicable to either weak, strong, or moderate localization. Moreover, the analysis is based on a generic periodic structure; thus, it is not restricted to a specific set of governing equations. These are achieved by taking into account reflections from nearby disordered cell-units successively and substituting the ensemble average for the sequential average of certain statistical properties of the cell units on the basis of spatial ergodicity. Application of the method is illustrated by an example, and the results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:In this work we investigate discrete-time transport in a generic U(1)-symmetric disordered model tuned across an array of different dynamical regimes. We develop an aggregate quantity, a circular statistical moment, which is a simple function of the magnetization profile and which elegantly captures transport properties of the system. From this quantity we extract transport exponents, revealing behaviors across the phase diagram consistent with localized, diffusive, and - most interestingly for a disordered system - superdiffusive regimes. Investigation of this superdiffusive regime reveals the existence of a prethermal "swappy" regime unique to discrete-time systems in which excitations propagate coherently; even in the presence of strong disorder.

Non-perturbative dynamics of flat-band systems with correlated disorder

Abstract:We develop a numerical method for the time evolution of Gaussian wave packets on flat-band lattices in the presence of correlated disorder. To achieve this, we introduce a method to generate random on-site energies with prescribed correlations. We verify this method with a one-dimensional (1D) cross-stitch model, and find good agreement with analytical results obtained from the disorder-dressed evolution equations. This allows us to reproduce previous findings, that disorder can mobilize 1D flat-band states which would otherwise remain localized. As explained by the corresponding disorder-dressed evolution equations, such mobilization requires an asymmetric disorder-induced coupling to dispersive bands, a condition that is generically not fulfilled when the flat-band is resonant with the dispersive bands at a Dirac point-like crossing. We exemplify this with the 1D Lieb lattice. While analytical expressions are not available for the two-dimensional (2D) system due to its complexity, we extend the numerical method to the 2D $\alpha-T_3$ model, and find that the initial flat-band wave packet preserves its localization when $\alpha = 0$, regardless of disorder and intersections. However, when $\alpha\neq 0$, the wave packet shifts in real space. We interpret this as a Berry phase controlled, disorder-induced wave-packet mobilization. In addition, we present density functional theory calculations of candidate materials, specifically $\rm Hg_{1-x}Cd_xTe$. The flat-band emerges near the $\Gamma$ point ($\bf{k}=$0) in the Brillouin zone.

Phenomenology of anomalous transport in disordered one-dimensional systems

Abstract:We study anomalous transport arising in disordered one-dimensional spin chains, specifically focusing on the subdiffusive transport typically found in a phase preceding the many-body localization transition. Different types of transport can be distinguished by the scaling of the average resistance with the system's length. We address the following question: what is the distribution of resistance over different disorder realizations, and how does it differ between transport types? In particular, an often evoked so-called Griffiths picture, that aims to explain slow transport as being due to rare regions of high disorder, would predict that the diverging resistivity is due to fat power-law tails in the resistance distribution. Studying many-particle systems with and without interactions we do not find any clear signs of fat tails. The data is compatible with distributions that decay faster than any power law required by the fat tails scenario. Among the distributions compatible with the data, a simple additivity argument suggests a Gaussian distribution for a fractional power of the resistance.

Anomalous transport in long-ranged open quantum systems

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional fermionic lattice system with long-ranged power-law decaying hopping with exponent $\alpha$. The system is further subjected to dephasing noise in the bulk. We investigate two variants of the problem: (i) an open quantum system where the setup is further subjected to boundary reservoirs enabling the scenario of a non-equilibrium steady state charge transport, and (ii) time dynamics of an initially localized single particle excitation in the absence of boundary reservoirs. In both variants, anomalous super-diffusive behavior is observed for $1< \alpha< 1.5$, and for $\alpha> 1.5$ the setup is effectively short-ranged and exhibits conventional diffusive transport. Our findings are supported by analytical calculations based on the multiple-scale analysis technique that leads to the emergence of a fractional diffusion equation for the density profile. Our study unravels an interesting interplay between long-range interaction and dephasing mechanism that could result in the emergence of unconventional behaviour in open quantum systems.

Abstract:Disorder is more the rule than the exception in natural and synthetic materials. Nonetheless, wave propagation within inhomogeneously disordered materials has received scant attention. We combine microwave experiments and theory to find the spatial variation of generic wave propagation quantities in inhomogeneously disordered materials. We demonstrate that wave statistics within samples of any dimension are independent of the detailed structure of a material and depend only on the net strengths of distributed scattering and reflection between the observation point and each of the boundaries.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of non-interacting particles in a one-dimensional tight-binding chain in the presence of an electric field with random amplitude drawn from a Gaussian distribution, and explicitly focus on the nature of quantum transport. We derive an exact expression for the probability propagator and the mean-squared displacement in the clean limit and generalize it for the disordered case using the Liouville operator method. Our analysis reveals that in the presence a random static field, the system follows diffusive transport; however, an increase in the field strength causes a suppression in the transport and thus results in disorder-induced localization. We further extend the analysis for a time-dependent disordered electric field and show that the dynamics of mean-squared-displacement deviates from the parabolic path as the field strength increases, unlike the clean limit where ballistic transport occurs.

Disorder-Induced Anomalous Mobility Enhancement in Confined Geometries

Abstract:Strong, scale-free disorder disrupts typical transport properties like the Stokes-Einstein relation and linear response, leading to anomalous, non-diffusive motion observed in amorphous materials, glasses, living cells, and other systems. Our study reveals that the combination of scale-free quenched disorder and geometrical constraints induces unconventional single particle mobility behavior. Specifically, in a $2$-dimensional channel with width $w$, under external drive, tighter geometrical constraints (smaller $w$) enhance mobility. We derive an explicit form of the response to an external force by utilizing the double-subordination approach for the quenched trap model. The observed mobility enhancement occurs in the low-temperature regime where the distribution of localization times is scale-free.

Universal non-Hermitian transport in disordered systems

Abstract:In disordered Hermitian systems, localization of energy eigenstates prohibits wave propagation. In non-Hermitian systems, however, wave propagation is possible even when the eigenstates of Hamiltonian are exponentially localized by disorders. We find in this regime that non-Hermitian wave propagation exhibits novel universal scaling behaviors without Hermitian counterpart. Furthermore, our theory demonstrates how the tail of imaginary-part density of states dictates wave propagation in the long-time limit. Specifically, for the three typical classes, namely the Gaussian, the uniform, and the linear imaginary-part density of states, we obtain logarithmically suppressed sub-ballistic transport, and two types of subdiffusion with exponents that depend only on spatial dimensions, respectively. Our work highlights the fundamental differences between Hermitian and non-Hermitian Anderson localization, and uncovers unique universality in non-Hermitian wave propagation.

Abstract:The localization length of wave functions in one-dimensional disordered systems with periodic modulation is studied. The role of spatial inhomogeneity in the problem is considered. We calculate the localization length varying with energy for the compositionally modulated systems with either the disorder of Anderson distributions or the randomness of periods. The results show that the non-uniformity of disordered systems leads to some different properties of the localized wave functions.

Abstract:Anomalous diffusion phenomena have been widely found in systems within an inhomogeneous complex environment. For Lévy walk in an inhomogeneous complex environment, we characterize the particle’s trajectory through an underdamped Langevin system coupled with a subordinator. The influence of the inhomogeneous environment on the particle’s motion is parameterized by the random system parameters, relaxation timescale τ, and velocity diffusivity σ. We find that the two random parameters make different effects on the original superdiffusion behavior of the Lévy walk. The random σ contributes to a trivial result after an ensemble average, which is independent of the specific distribution of σ. By contrast, we find that a specific distribution of τ, a modified Lévy distribution with a finite mean, slows down the decaying rate of the velocity correlation function with respect to the lag time. However, the random τ does not promote the diffusion behavior in a direct way, but plays a competition role to the superdiffusion of the original Lévy walk. In addition, the effect of the random τ is also related to the specific subordinator in the coupled Langevin model, which corresponds to the distribution of the flight time of the Lévy walk. The random system parameters are capable of leading to novel dynamics, which needs detailed analyses, rather than an intuitive judgment, especially in complex systems.

Abstract:We introduce the quantum Levy walk to study transport and decoherence in a quantum random model. We have derived from second order perturbation theory the quantum master equation for a \textit{Levy-like particle}that moves along a lattice through hopping scale-free while interacting with a thermal bath of oscillators. The general evolution of the quantum Levy particle has been solved for different preparations of the system. We examine the evolution of the quantum purity, the localized correlation, and the probability to be in a lattice site, all them leading to important conclusions concerning quantum irreversibility and decoherence features. We prove that the quantum thermal mean-square displacement is finite under a constraint that is different when compared to the classical Weierstrass random walk. We prove that when the mean-square displacement is infinite the density of state has a complex null-set inside the Brillouin zone. We show the existence of a critical behavior in the continuous eigenenergy which is related to its non-differentiability and self-affine characteristics. In general our approach allows to study analytically quantum fluctuations and decoherence in a long-range hopping model.

Abstract:We study the statistical properties of wave scattering in a disordered waveguide. The statistical properties of a "building block" of length deltaL are derived from a potential model and used to find the evolution with length of the expectation value of physical quantities. In the potential model the scattering units consist of thin potential slices, idealized as delta slices, perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the waveguide; the variation of the potential in the transverse direction may be arbitrary. The sets of parameters defining a given slice are taken to be statistically independent from those of any other slice and identically distributed. In the dense-weak-scattering limit, in which the potential slices are very weak and their linear density is very large, so that the resulting mean free paths are fixed, the corresponding statistical properties of the full waveguide depend only on the mean free paths and on no other property of the slice distribution. The universality that arises demonstrates the existence of a generalized central-limit theorem. Our final result is a diffusion equation in the space of transfer matrices of our system, which describes the evolution with the length L of the disordered waveguide of the transport properties of interest. In contrast to earlier publications, in the present analysis the energy of the incident particle is fully taken into account. For one propagating mode, N=1 , we have been able to solve the diffusion equation for a number of particular observables, and the solution is in excellent agreement with the results of microscopic calculations. In general, we have not succeeded in finding a solution of the diffusion equation. We have thus developed a numerical simulation, to be called "random walk in the transfer matrix space," in which the universal statistical properties of a "building block" are first implemented numerically, and then the various building blocks are combined to find the statistical properties of the full waveguide. The reported results thus obtained (in which use was made of a "short-wavelength approximation") are in very good agreement with those arising from truly microscopic calculations, for both bulk and surface disorder. Since the paper has a clear pedagogical aim, we have included, for the benefit of experts and non-experts, a number of appendixes that contain the more involved calculations.

Transport in Weak Dynamic Disorder: a Unified Theory.

Abstract:For quantum particles, it is well known that static disorder would lead to Anderson localization (AL) while dynamic (evolving) disorder would destroy AL and facilitate the transport. In this article, we study the transport behavior of a quantum particle in weak dynamic disorder. Based on Wigner representation, we obtain the radiative transfer equation (a linear Boltzmann equation) in the weak dynamic disorder limit, which could lead to not only all the existing transport behaviors in the literature but also new transport behaviors (for example, Lévy flight in momentum space). Furthermore, for dimensions greater than one, though we can formally derive the diffusive transport approximation, we argue that this diffusive transport is not physical but the nondiffusive transport should persist forever. This provides a possible resolution for the long-standing puzzle whether diffusive or nondiffusive transport would prevail in the long time limit. Our result would have major implications for the hypertransport of light, matter wave dynamics in disordered media, and directed polymer problems.
Charge density waves in disordered media circumventing the Imry-Ma argument

Abstract:Two powerful theoretical predictions, Anderson localization and the Imry-Ma argument, impose significant restrictions on the phases of matter that can exist in the presence of even the smallest amount of disorder in one-dimensional systems. These predictions forbid conducting states and ordered states respectively. It was thus remarkable that a mechanism to circumvent Anderson localization relying on the presence of correlated disorder was found, that is also realized in certain biomolecular systems. In a similar manner, we show that the Imry-Ma argument can be circumvented resulting in the formation of stable ordered states with discrete broken symmetries in disordered one dimensional systems. Specifically, we simulate a family of Hamiltonians of spinless fermions with correlated disorder and interactions, where we find that a charge density wave is stable up to a finite critical disorder strength. Having circumvented the Imry-Ma mechanism, we then investigate other mechanisms by which disorder can destroy an ordered state.

Abstract:We develop a theoretical model to investigate wave propagation in media with random time-varying properties, where temporal fluctuations lead to complex scattering dynamics. Focusing on the ensemble-averaged field, we derive an exact expression for the average Green's function in the presence of finite temporal disorder, and extend our analysis to the thermodynamic limit. In contrast to spatial disorder, causality prevents recurrent scattering, allowing us to achieve a non-perturbative solution. We identify two distinct propagation regimes: one where the field oscillates with constant amplitude, and another where it grows exponentially at long times. Our findings offer new insights into wave dynamics in temporally disordered media, with potential applications in time-varying metamaterials, dynamic sensing, and imaging in turbulent or chaotic environments.
