Abstract:Selecting self-supporting substrates with large specific surface areas is an effective strategy to avoid the agglomeration of nanomaterials and improve the structural stability of materials while increasing their electrical conductivity. In this study, CoMoO 4 nanosheet structures were first grown on a nickel foam (NF) substrate by hydrothermal and calcination processes. Then, NiSe nanoparticles were deposited on NF/CoMoO 4 by a constant potential method to construct NF/CoMoO 4 @NiSe nanosheet electrode materials with graded layered structures. This nanosheet structure grown on NF substrates provided enough space for mass transfer and fully exposed the electrochemical active sites. Meanwhile, the self-supported electrode reduced the indirect contact resistance between the electrocatalyst and the substrate, which promoted the timely release of generated bubbles from the electrode. The NF/CoMoO 4 @NiSe electrode exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic activities under alkaline conditions. Overpotentials of only 58 mV and 184 mV were needed to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm -2 for the HER and OER, respectively. This study presents new ideas for the construction of nanosheet structures and the design of efficient HER and OER bifunctional electrocatalysts using transition metal selenides.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the foundation of the emerging hydrogen energy industry, which can be intrinsically boosted by powerful heterostructured catalysts. In this work, we demonstrate zinc selenide/nickel selenide heterojunction nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon framework (ZnSe/NiSe@NC) by a selenization process, which exhibit a remarkably catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution. Compared with pristine ZnSe@NC (with a Tafel slope of 68 mV dec−1 and a ƞ10 of 270 mV), ZnSe/NiSe@NC displayed a much improved HER property with a Tafel slope of 45 mV dec−1 and a ƞ10 of 153 mV. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedancespectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that the introduction of NiSe can not only facilitate the water dissociation process, but also enhance charge transfer efficiency in ZnSe/NiSe heterostructure. This work demonstrates considerablepotential for transition metal selenide-based catalysts through optimization of their composition and structure.

Abstract:Abstract Although it suffers from a heavy dependence on the noble platinum catalyst, the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most promising methods for the production of hydrogen. After numerous efforts, it is found that MoS 2 -based heterostructure may replace platinum as the electrochemical HER catalyst. In this work, the nanocrystalline NiSe 2 /MoS 2 heterostructures were successfully prepared on the carbon fiber paper (CFP) substrate through electrochemical deposition and hydrothermal process. According to a series of electrochemical HER tests and a comparison with other MoS 2 -based heterostructure catalysts, the CFP/NiSe 2 /MoS 2 catalyst with an overpotential η 10 of 143 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV dec −1 exhibited an excellent electrochemical HER catalytic performance and durability. In addition, CFP/NiSe 2 /MoS 2 catalyst was treated by plasma to further improve the catalytic performance of the catalyst.

Abstract:Developing highly active and stably non-precious metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline conditions is of paramount importance to hydrogen economy. Herein, nanosheet-assembled hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres confined with ultrasmall NiSe nanoparticles (NiSe@NC) are synthesized by employing a SiO 2 template-assisted approach. As expected, the as-prepared NiSe@NC electrocatalyst delivers an overpotential of 169 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 without iR -correction, and sustains at least 80 h for continuous operation, far outperforming the NiSe-p catalyst in 1 M KOH medium toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The appealing HER performance is mainly ascribed to the synergy effect between hollow nitrogen-doped carbon and highly active NiSe nanoparticles, which improves catalytically active sites, expedites electron transfer rate and optimizes the electronic structure of NiSe@NC nanomaterial. More strikingly, this study presents the feasible insights for constructing robust cost-effective electrocatalysts towards efficient HER in harsh alkaline media.

Abstract:Heterogeneous NiSe2/MoSe2 nanocomposite constructed by metallic NiSe2 nanocrystallites embedded in few‐layer MoSe2 nanosheets has been synthesized, which delivers superior performance and long‐term stability. The superior performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can be ascribed to the unique embedded nanostructure, which can not only improve the overall conductivity of the nanocomposite but also greatly increase the exposed active sites. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between NiSe2 and MoSe2 facilitates the rapid electrons transfer from the electrode to the exposed MoSe2 edges to take part in the HER reaction, and thus promotes the HER performance. Developing high‐efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been considered as a crucial way to reduce energy loss in water‐splitting. Herein, heterogeneous NiSe2/MoSe2 (H‐NiSe2/MoSe2) nanocomposite constructed by metallic NiSe2 nanocrystallites embedded in few‐layer MoSe2 nanosheets has been in situ synthesized by a simple hydrothermal reaction. As an HER electrocatalyst, it delivers superior performance with an ultra‐small onset overpotential of 103 mV, a small overpotential of 147 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 43.5 mV dec−1, and long‐term stability up to 18 h in 0.5 M H2SO4. The superior performance for HER can be ascribed to the unique embedded nanostructure, which can not only improve the overall conductivity of the nanocomposite but also greatly increase the exposed active sites. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of NiSe2 and MoSe2 hybrid facilitates the rapid electrons transfer from the electrode to the exposed MoSe2 edges to take part in the HER reaction, and thus promotes the HER performance. This study provides a simple route for fabricating bi‐metallic selenides‐based nanocomposite as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER.

Abstract:In this work, we synthesized Se doped MoS2@Ni3S2 with nanosheets coated nanorods structure supported on Ni foam (MoNiSeS). Firstly, MoS2@Ni3S2 (MoNiS) nanorods was synthesized by hydrothermal method. After selenization treatment, MoSe2 successfully formed on the edge of MoS2 nanosheets and particle Ni3S2 transformed into NiSe, in which MoSe2 and NiSe acted as new phase in MoNiSeS. The obtained MoNiSeS only needs a low overpotential of 68 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and has a low Tafel plots of 72.77 mV dec−1 and good electrochemical durability, whose electrochemical activity is much better than that of MoNiS and NiSeS, implying the introduction of Mo and Se is beneficial to improve the electrocatalytic performance of NiS for HER. In addition, the proper amount of Mo source, which has an effect on the morphology of product, has also been investigated. For MoNiSeS, the typical nanosheets coated nanarods expose more active sites and the synergic effects is good to the improvement of the catalytic activity. Meanwhile, WNiSeS has also been prepared using the same method and the corresponding results show that the electrochemical activity of WNiSeS is much better than that of NiSeS, proving the universality of this strategy.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides are a fascinating class of substitute for traditional noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the monometallic selenides still have the disadvantages of low electroactive sites and electrical conductivity. To address such drawbacks, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures composed of bimetallic compounds have aroused great attention. In this study, cactus-like bimetallic nickel–cobalt nanosheets with a 3D nanostructure are successfully prepared on the surface of conductive substrate by a one-step hydrothermal reaction. Then a high-efficiency bimetallic catalyst ((Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP) is obtained by a facile chemical vapor deposition. Benefiting from bimetallic components and the unique 3D structure, the cactus-like (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP only requires a low overpotential of 154 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The Tafel slope of (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP (67 mV dec -1 ) further shows that (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP has faster HER kinetics. Besides, the long-term stability test demonstrates the excellent durability of (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . This research offers a useful technique and guide for improving the structure of bimetallic selenides based on transition metals to design high-efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:In this communication, nickel diselenide (NiSe2) nanoparticles are synthesized by a facile and low-cost hydrothermal method. The synthesis method can be extended to other metal diselenides as well. The electrode made of NiSe2 exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A low Tafel slope of 31.1 mV per decade is achieved for NiSe2, which is comparable to that of platinum (∼30 mV per decade). Moreover, the catalytic activity of NiSe2 is very stable and no obvious degradation is found even after 1000 cyclic voltammetric sweeps.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel three-dimensional self-supported ternary NiS-Ni9S8-NiSe nanorod (NR) array cathode has been successfully in-situ constructed by a two-step hydrothermal route. When applied to hydrogen evolution, the synthesized NiS-Ni9S8-NiSe-NR electrode demonstrates optimized electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability, only requiring overpotentials as low as 120 mV and 112 mV to drive 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively. DFT calculation reveals that, after Se doping, Se 3d orbitals are bonded to Ni 3d orbitals and S p orbitals near Fermi level, attesting a significant electron transfer between nickel and selenium atom. The success of enhancing the electrocatalytic performance via introducing the Se dopant holds great promise for the potential optimization of other transition metal compounds in highly-efficient electrochemical water splitting for large-scale hydrogen production.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is considered to be a green and flexible strategy for the mass production of hydrogen fuel, while the high cost and insufficent activity of current cathode catalysts severely suffocate the widespread thriving of hydrogen economy. Herein, we present a bottom‐up assembly strategy to the controllable construction of 2D/2D heterojunctions built from cobalt‐iron selenide nanolamellas and Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. This unique architectural design gives the resulting CoyFe1‐ySe2/Ti3C2Tx catalysts a series of interesting structural advantages, such as 2D/2D heterostructure, large active surface areas, modulated electronic structure, uniform CoyFe1‐ySe2 dispersion, and good electron conductivity, thereby leading to strong synergistic coupling effects. As a consequence, the optimized Co0.7Fe0.3Se2/Ti3C2Tx electrocatalyst with an appropriate Co/Fe ratio possesses unusual hydrogen evolution properties in terms of a low overpotential of 69 mV at 10 mA cm‐2, a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec‐1 and reliable long‐term durability, which are more competitive than those of bare Ti3C2Tx, FeSe2 and CoSe catalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal diselenides have been considered as one of the most promising earth-abundant electrocatalysts as alternatives to noble metal for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, hierarchically three-dimensional nickel cobalt diselenides (Ni1/3Co2/3Se2) with networked nanowires and nanosheets characteristics have been successfully synthesized. Such morphological features may not only provide large surface area allowing for exposure of more active sites, but also benefit deep electrolyte penetration for electrons and electrolyte ions. The resulting binder-free flexible electrodes with large production yield exhibit superior electrochemical HER activity and excellent durability after potential sweep tests for 1000 cycles. Besides their catalytic activity remain stable for electrolysis over 8h at mixed overpotential. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance makes the present nickel cobalt diselenide as a promising earth-abundant electrocatalyst for HER application.

Abstract:Developing high-performance, eco-friendly bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial to popularizing water electrolysis for hydrogen production, but it still presents major challenges. Here, we develop a composite material with NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 heterostructure loaded on N-doped carbon layers by utilizing the metal-organic framework as a sacrificial template (NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC). According to microstructural studies, direct contact between NiSe 2 and FeSe 2 induces charge transfer and enhances conductivity, while sensible arraying of NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC nanosheets fully exposes active sites and protects catalysts from violent reaction processes. The NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC heterostructured catalysts show excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, with overpotentials of 54 and 232 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC also retains superiority in a two-electrode system, needing lower voltage to drive the overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 (1.53 V) than Pt/C||RuO 2 as well as long-term stability. This work introduces a novel concept for developing state-of-the-art non-noble metal catalysts for hydrogen production and new insights into interface engineering.

Abstract:Exploring high-efficient, earth-abundant and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for large-scale implementation of energy converting and storing. Thus, we fabricated a free-standing hierarchical heterostructure electrode of Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF via a rational combination of hydrothermal, selenization and electrodeposition process, among which the ultrathin CoFe LDH nanosheets intimately assembled onto the vertical aligned Ni 0.85 Se nanosheets supported on Ni foam. The constructed core-shell nanosheet arrays hold the plentiful hetero-interfaces and intimate interactions through metal-oxygen bonds between two individuals, which guarantee the fast OER kinetic processes. Additionally, CoFe LDH with crystalline/amorphous hybrid structure favors providing more reaction sites. Remarkably, the optimal Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF binary composites possess outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of ∼223 and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution as well as good durability. This research offers an alternative approach for improving electrocatalytic water splitting through constructing 3D hierarchical heterostructures.

Abstract:Constructing heterointerface engineering has becoming an effective and general strategy for developing highly efficient and durable nonnoble electrocatalysts for catalyzing both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, we synthesized a self-supporting heterogeneous NiSe@Co0.85Se/NF electrocatalyst using a facile in situ selenization of transition metal precursors that coated on the nickel foam (NF) in polyol solution. The NF was used as both conductive substrate and nickel source, ensuring superior electronic conductivity for catalyzing. The NiSe@Co0.85Se/NF exhibited remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activities with HER overpotential of 168 mV and OER overpotential of 258 mV to achieve 10 mA·cm−2. The water splitting system using NiSe@Co0.85Se/NF as both anode and cathode electrodes achieved a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 at 1.61 V with nearly 100% faradaic efficiency and impressively long-term stability. The efficient bifunctional catalytic performance of NiSe@Co0.85Se/NF should be attributed to the electronic modulation and synergistic effect between NiSe and Co0.85Se, the intrinsic metallic conductivity and the enlarged active sites exposure. This work provides a facile method for developing heterogeneous bifunctional catalysts for advanced electrochemical energy conversion technologies.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution poses a challenge for current research. Herein, a novel hierarchical hetero-electrocatalyst of Ni3S2@2D Co MOF was synthesized with cobalt metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) crystallization on carbon paper (CP) and in-situ electrodeposition of Ni3S2 nanosheets. The catalyst Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP exhibited an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with a low overpotential of 140 mV and a small Tafel slope of 90.3 mV dec-1 at a current density of -10 mA cm-2. This catalyst demonstrated a lower overpotential (395 mV) than commercial Pt/C catalyst at a high current density (>130 mA cm-2). The efficient and stable HER performance of Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP was attributed to nickel sulfide honeycomb nanosheets grown on two-dimensional MOF frameworks, which were conducive to charge transfer and hydrogen evolution. The electron-rich nickel sulfide surface significantly diminished H* adsorption and reduced energy barrier of H2 generation to promote HER process. This work provides a new strategy for practical preparation of efficient and stable transition metal electrocatalysts.
Design and Epitaxial Growth of MoSe2–NiSe Vertical Heteronanostructures with Electronic Modulation for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2, where M = Mo or W and X = S or Se) have been regarded as some of the best alternatives for noble metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A tremendous number of attempts have mainly focused on the maximization of the number of active edge sites and the conductivity of MX2-based electrocatalysts to enhance HER performance. However, for MX2-based electrocatalysts, the acceleration of the kinetic process to improve HER performance has been neglected until now. Here we report a colloidal epitaxial growth strategy for synthesizing MoSe2-NiSe nanohybrids with well-defined heterointerfaces that are constructed by in situ growth of metallic NiSe nanocrystallites on the MoSe2 nanosheets. These high-quality vertical heteronanostructures with band alignment give rise to the electrons being transferred from the metallic NiSe nanocrystallites to the MoSe2 matrix, achieving the electronic modulation of the MoSe2-NiSe nanohybrids for efficient electrocatalytic activity. The MoSe2-NiSe nanohybrids exhibit excellent HER catalytic properties with a low onset potential of -150 mV, a large cathodic current density (10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 210 mV), and a small Tafel slope of 56 mV per decade. The greatly enhanced electrocatalytic properties were attributed to the electronic structure modulation from the synergetic interactions between NiSe nanocrystallites and MoSe2 nanosheets. We anticipate that the construction of hybrid structures will be a powerful tool for creating high-performance electrocatalysts in solids.

Abstract:It is imperative but challenging to develop non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Our work reports a core-shell nanostructure that is constructed by the electrodeposition of ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets (NiFe-LDHNS) on Cu2Se nanowires, which are obtained by selenizing Cu(OH)2 nanowires in situ grown on Cu foam. The obtained Cu2Se@NiFe-LDHNS electrocatalyst provides more exposed edges and catalytic active sites, thus exhibiting excellent OER and HER electrocatalytic performance in alkaline electrolytes. This catalyst needs only an overpotential of 197 mV for OER at 50 mA cm-2 and 195 mV for HER at 10 mA cm-2. Besides, when employed as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water-splitting, it requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. Furthermore, the corresponding water electrolyzer demonstrates robust durability for at least 40 h. The excellent performance of Cu2Se@NiFe-LDHNS might be ascribed to the synergistic effect from the ultrathin NiFe-LDHNS, the Cu2Se nanowires anchored on the Cu foam, and the formed core-shell nanostructure, which offers large surface area, ample active sites, and sufficient channels for gas and electrolyte diffusion. This work provides an efficient strategy for the fabrication of self-supported electrocatalysts for efficient overall water-splitting.
