Abstract:In this study, we reported a highly sensitive nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on Cu/Cu2O composite nanoparticles (Cu/Cu2O NPs) decorated on a single carbon fiber (SCF) by direct in-situ electrochemical cyclic voltammetry deposition. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the Cu/Cu2O NPs/SCF electrodes displayed a porous structure of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles with an average size of around 30 nm, which greatly increased the surface area of single carbon fiber and provided a large number of catalysis sites towards glucose oxidation. The electrochemical behavior of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry study, in which the as-prepared electrode displayed superior catalytic performance and exhibited an ultra-high sensitivity (28,071 uA mM(-1) cm(-2)) anda wide linear range up to 7.8 mM. The in-situ electrodeposition of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles and excellent conductivity of carbon fiber improved the electron transfer rate due to direct electron collection and resulted in a short response time (<1 s). Additionally, the electrode also showed good reproducibility, outstanding anti-interference ability and long-time stability, as well as a reliable testing result in bovine serum sample, indicating a potential application in clinical diagnosis and health monitoring.

Abstract:Cu nanoparticle/graphene oxide/single walled carbon nanotube (CuNP/GO/SWCNT) composites were prepared by a facile electrodeposition method and used for constructing nonenzymatic glucose sensor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to characterize the morphology and structures of the samples. The electrocatalytic performance of CuNP/GO/SWCNT composites towards glucose oxidation was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and current–time measurements. Electrochemical results indicated that CuNP/GO/SWCNT electrode exhibited a higher electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose than CuNP, CuNP/GO and CuNP/SWCNT electrodes. This was because the GO/SWCNT composite as substrate material not only possessed excellent conductivity, but also provided large surface area for the high loading of the CuNPs. Meanwhile, the good dispersibility, independent and multi-layer structure of CuNP, could enhance the charge-transport properties, and afford more active sites for the catalytic oxidation of glucose. Under the optimized conditions, the sensor showed a high sensitivity of up to 930.07μAmM−1cm−2, with a wide linear range of 1μM to 4.538mM and a low detection limit of 0.34μM (S/N=3). It also exhibited excellent stability, reproducibility, selectivity, and reliable measurement in real human blood samples. All of these excellent properties made the CuNP/GO/SWCNT composite material promising for the development of effective nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:A series of novel bimetallic PtCu nanochains have been synthesized through a water-based mild chemical route, and their compositions (PtxCu1-x) can be conveniently tuned at the mesoscopic scale by a facile dealloying process. These nanomaterials have been characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and elemental analysis. They have different compositions (Pt88Cu12,Pt75Cu25, and Pt50Cu50) but have similar morphology. Electrochemical activity of these nanomaterials is compared to Pt and nanochains of Pt when they are chemically modified onto a glassy Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the sensors made by these PtCu nanomaterials are very sensitive and selective for glucose detection due to the wiring of dispersed crystals, porous nanostructure, clean surface, and synergetic electronic effects of the alloyed atoms. Among them, the modified electrode made of Pt75Cu25 shows the best performance. The superior catalytic activity and selectivity make nanomaterials, via the green synthesis, very promising for applications in direct biosensing of glucose.
One-step Synthesis of Novel Cu@polymer Nanocomposites Through a Self-Activated Route and Their Application As Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensors

Abstract:In this study, we developed a one-step self-activated route for synthesizing novel core-shell Cu@polymer nanocomposites. Under solvothermal conditions, Cu2+ was reduced to metal copper by formaldehyde and salicylaldehyde and the newly generated copper crystals acted as the catalysts to activate the condensation polymerization between formaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, resulting in the formation of core-shell Cu@polymer nanocomposites with Cu nanoparticles as the cores and polymer as the shells. The Cu@polymer nanocomposites can be applied as a nonenzymatic sensor for glucose detection. The as-prepared Cu@polymer nanocomposite modified electrode shows good linear dependence in a wide range from 0.01 mM to 1 mM, a low detection limit, high sensitivity up to 1417.1 μA cm-2 mM-1 and great selectivity to glucose concentration change.
Facile synthesis of bamboo-like Ni3S2@NCNT as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for non-enzymatic glucose detection

Abstract:The rational design and controllable synthesis of metal–carbon composites as low cost and efficient catalysts have become the focus of research on non-enzymatic glucose detection. Herein, nickel sulfide nanocrystals encapsulated/dispersed by bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Ni3S2@NCNT) are facilely synthesized by pyrolysis and sulfuration of Ni2+-dicyandiamide complex. During the pyrolysis, nickel nanoparticles are formed to promote the growth of NCNTs, while the NCNTs can disperse Ni nanoparticles to prevent them from oxidation and aggregations. The synergistic effects between Ni3S2 active sites and NCNTs also facilitate electronic transfer and enhance catalytic performances. Thus, Ni3S2@NCNT demonstrates excellent performances on glucose oxidation with unprecedented sensitivity (1447.64 μA mM−1 cm−2), low detection limit (0.14 μM), and wide linear range (0.46 μM-3.19 mM). Furthermore, as-fabricated sensors with superior performances indicate promising application prospects on non-enzymatic glucose detection in artificial sweat. This study will provide a general strategy for the controllable fabrication of catalysts with similar structures for other applications.

Abstract:The electrodeposition method was firstly applied to obtain uniform cube‐shaped copper nanoparticles on conductive glass (ITO), and then a layer of tiny nickel nanoparticles. A bimetallic composite electrode (Cu‐Ni/ITO), characterized by TEM, XPS and XRD, was prepared to construct the non‐enzyme electrochemical glucose sensor with high catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Cu‐Ni/ITO had been greatly improved, probably due to the synergistic bimetallic catalysis effect. The electrode had a satisfactory linear response in the range of 2.5×10‐7 M to 2.6×10‐3 M, with detection limit as low as 67 nM. Besides, Cu‐Ni/ITO had good anti‐interference ability and reproducibility, indicating the promising application for glucose detection in practical samples.

Abstract:Fast and effective detection of glucose has important significance in clinical medicine and the diagnosis of diabetes. Electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor has received extensive attention to detect glucose in the recent years due to its simple operation and low cost. In this paper, Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 nanoparticles decorated on nickel foam electrode as a sensitive non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for glucose detection are synthesized by a one-step non-aqueous sol–gel method. Different Cu-doping levels are designed as performance comparison analysis. The electrocatalytic performance of the Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 nanoparticles/Ni foam electrodes towards glucose oxidation is evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and current time. The results show that 15% Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 /Ni foam electrode shows higher sensitivity, as well as an excellent anti-interference and long-term stability towards glucose detection compared with 10% and 20% Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 /Ni foam electrodes. Hence, 15% Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 /Ni foam can be regarded as an efficient and a promising sensing material for glucose detection. Such satisfactory performance is not only attributed to the synergistic effect of Cd, In, and Cu, but also benefits from the uniform distribution of 15% Cu–CdIn 2 O 4 nanoparticles on the Ni foam, which provides more reactive sites for the electrochemical catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Glucose sensors are being urgently needed in many fields and it is very necessary to develop efficient electrode materials for electroanalytical glucose sensor. Herein, Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 nanowires (NWs) are successfully synthesized via a hard-template method for an electrochemical sensor, in which we used Cu nanowire as a template. The results show the Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 NWs-based glucose sensor exhibits a high sensitivity up to 1423.912 μAcm−2mM−1, a linear range up to 5. 664 mM, and 600 nM (S/N = 3) lower limit of detection (LOD), accompanied by good selectivity and stability. In principle, such findings demonstrate that Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 NWs could be a promising electrode material in enzyme-free glucose sensors.

Abstract:It is essential to discover an affordable electrode for the glucose detection application, which can be easily prepared. In this regard, we report a novel non-enzymatic glucose sensor that utilizes a free-standing electrode with a hybrid structure consisting of nanoporous CuZn/CuO nanoparticle (NPC/CuO). This electrode was fabricated through the process of dealloying the Zn 80 Cu 20 precursor alloy and subsequent natural oxidation. We conducted a thorough investigation of the phase structure and morphology evolution. The results revealed that the NPC/CuO composite-based glucose biosensor displayed remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, exhibiting a high sensitivity of 2.33 mAcm −2 mM −1 , wide linear range from 0 to 3.5 mM, low detection limit of 2.42 μM, excellent selectivity and suitable stability. These outstanding characteristics were attributed to the combined effect of the electroactive CuO and the nanoporous structure. These findings highlight that NPC/CuO composites have the potential to replace expensive noble metal biosensors in non-enzymatic glucose detection. By leveraging the cooperative effect of the nanostructure and copper oxide, these composites offer promising prospects for future development in this field.

Abstract:Constructing high-performance glucose sensors is of great significance for the prevention and diagnosis of diabetes, and the key is to develop new sensitive materials. In this paper, a series of Ni2Co1-L MOFs (L = H2BPDC: 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H2NDC: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; H2BDC: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) were synthesized by a room temperature stirring method. The effects of metal centers and ligands on the structure, compositions, electrochemical properties of the obtained Ni2Co1-L MOFs were characterized, indicating the successful preparation of layered MOFs with different sizes, stacking degrees, electrochemical active areas, numbers of exposed active sites, and glucose catalytic activity. Among them, Ni2Co1-BDC exhibits a relatively thin and homogeneous plate-like morphology, and the Ni2Co1-BDC modified glassy carbon electrode (Ni2Co1-BDC/GCE) has the highest electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the mechanism of the enhanced glucose oxidation signal was investigated. It was shown that glucose has a higher electron transfer capacity and a larger apparent catalytic rate constant on the Ni2Co1-BDC/GCE surface. Therefore, tunable non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensing was carried out by regulating the metal centers and ligands. As a result, a high-sensitivity enzyme-free glucose sensing platform was successfully constructed based on the Ni2Co1-BDC/GCE, which has a wide linear range of 0.5–2899.5 μM, a low detection limit of 0.29 μM (S/N = 3), and a high sensitivity of 3925.3 μA mM−1 cm−2. Much more importantly, it was also successfully applied to the determination of glucose in human serum with satisfactory results, demonstrating its potential for glucose detection in real samples.

Abstract:Nanostructured NiCu layered double hydroxides (NiCu LDHs) are synthesized in situ on polypyrrole nanotubes through convenient co‐precipitation and hydrothermal synthesis. The nanostructured composite (NiCu LDHs/PPy) shows high electrocatalytic activities towards the glucose oxidation reaction in alkaline electrolyte so that a nonenzymatic glucose sensor is developed. It is demonstrated that the sensor offers a wide linear range from 1.5 μM to 1.0 mM with a high sensitivity of 525.8 μA mM‐1 cm‐2 and a low limit of detection of 66 nM (S/N = 3). The nonenzymatic sensor has been successfully applied to real blood samples for glucose minoring with high accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract The design of hierarchical heterogeneous structures with rational components is considered as a promising method to enhance the properties of electrocatalyst. Binary metal oxides, with high electrochemical activity, have attracted considerable interest in glucose determination. In this work, we synthesized the CuCo 2 O 4 @NiCo 2 O 4 hybrid structure on conductive carbon cloth (CC) via a simple two-step hydrothermal process and investigated its catalytic ability toward glucose. The two individual components that make up this hybrid electrode have good electrical conductivity and excellent catalytic properties for glucose, so the smart combination of these two active materials can provide more catalytic sites and sufficient redox couples for the glucose oxidation. As a result, the CuCo 2 O 4 @NiCo 2 O 4 modified CC presented superior glucose sensing properties, including ultrahigh sensitivity, fast response time, wide linear range and acceptable detection limit. Besides, the sample also exhibited good selectivity for substances in human blood that interfere with glucose detection, such as UA, AA, fructose, sucrose and KCl. The potential of the CuCo 2 O 4 @NiCo 2 O 4 /CC electrode for practical application was investigated by measuring the glucose concentration in real serum samples. These results prove that the construction of hierarchical ordered structure is conducive to the improvement of glucose sensor.

Cu₂O-Au nanocomposites for enzyme-free glucose sensing with enhanced performances

Abstract:A facile method for the synthesis of Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites has been reported by injecting Cu(2)O nanocubes into Au precursor directly with the assistance of ultrasound radiation at room temperature. The ultrasound radiation is not a necessary requirement but can make the distribution of Au nanoparticles more homogenous. The formation of Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites is attributed to following two reasons. The first one is the difference in the reduction potential between Cu(2+)/Cu(2)O and AuCl(4)(-)/Au, which can also be considered as the driving force for the redox reaction. The other one is the low lattice mismatch between (200) planes of Cu(2)O and (200) facets of Au, which is favorable for the formation of heterostructure. The electrochemical investigation demonstrates that the performances of Cu(2)O nanocubes in enzyme-free glucose sensing have been improved significantly after the decoration of Au nanoparticles which may be derived from the polarization effect provided by Au nanoparticles. As-prepared Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites have great potential in enzyme-free glucose sensing.
Copper Selenide Micro/Nanocrystals on Carbon Paper via Chemical Vapor Deposition Selenylation as Electrodes for Non-enzymatic Glucose Sensing

Abstract:Glucose is a vital monosaccharide for catabolism, but its imbalances can lead to diabetes, a chronic disease without a cure but manageable through diet and lifestyle changes. For people with diabetes, timely monitoring of glucose level is very important for treatment. This can be done by various glucose sensors. However, the rational design and controllable synthesis of glucose catalysts with low-cost and high-efficiency glucose detection ability are still challenging. Herein, copper selenide micro/nanocrystal-modified carbon paper (Cu2–x Se/CP) self-supporting electrodes were prepared by a facile electrodeposition method followed by chemical vapor deposition. The rod-shaped carbon substrate and shale-shaped Cu2–x Se micro/nanoparticles resulted in the formation of a hierarchical structure. The synergistic effects between Cu2–x Se active sites and carbon paper promoted electronic transfer, resulting in an enhanced electrocatalytic performance for glucose oxidation. The optimized Cu2–x Se/CP exhibited excellent glucose sensing performance with linear detection ranges of 5–200 and 200–760 μM, as well as high sensitivities of 5391 μA mM–1 cm–2 at low glucose concentrations and 3004 μA mM–1 cm–2 at high concentrations with a low detection limit of 1.2 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, Cu2–x Se/CP exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability, anti-interference, and long-term storage ability. The practical applications of Cu2–x Se/CP were evaluated by measuring glucose in real human serum samples and artificial saliva, and the results displayed an outstanding performance. In sum, the proposed Cu2–x Se/CP-modified electrode with excellent glucose electrocatalytic activity is very promising for future clinical non-enzymatic glucose detection.

Abstract:Early diagnosis may be crucial for the prevention of chronic diabetes mellitus. For that herein, we prepared a CuS/MoS2 composite for a non-enzymatic glucose sensor through a one-step hydrothermal method owing to the synergetic effect of CuS/MoS2. The surface morphology of CuS/MoS2 was studied by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Cs-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cs-STEM). The crystallinity and surface composition of CuS/MoS2 were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. The working electrode was prepared from CuS/MoS2 electrocatalyst, and for that dispersed solution of electrocatalyst was used to fabricate the material-loaded glassy carbon electrode (GC). CuS/MoS2 composite shows the viability of electrocatalyst to oxidize glucose in an alkaline solution with sensitivity and detection limit of 252.71 μA mM-1 cm-2 and 1.52 μM respectively. The proposed glucose sensor showed reasonable stability and potential selectivity during electrochemical analysis. Accordingly, the CuS/MoS2 composite has potential as a viable material for glucose sensing in diluted human serum.

Abstract:The nanomaterials for non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors are usually pre-synthesized and coated onto electrodes by ex situ methods. In this work, amorphous cobalt-nickel sulfide (CoNiS) nanoparticles were facilely prepared on copper foam (CF) by the in situ successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, and as-prepared CoNiS/CF was studied as an electrode for non-enzymatic glucose sensing. It was analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). This binary sulfide electrode showed better performance toward glucose oxidation compared to the corresponding single sulfide and showed a wide linear range of 0.005 to 3.47 mM, a high sensitivity of 2298.7 μA mM −1 cm −2 and a low detection limit of 2.0 μM. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity and good repeatability and stability and was able to detect glucose in an actual sample. This work provides a simple and fast in situ electrode preparation method for a high-sensitivity glucose sensor.

Abstract:The transition-metal phosphides with metalloid characterics, exhibiting great application potential in the field of glucose detection that plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes, can achieve high sensitivity as a eletrocatalyst for nonenzymatic glucose sensors. However, it has the drawbacks of low detection range and difficulty in manufacture. In this work, a hybrid heterogeneous nanocomposite of copper and nickel phosphide (Ni2P-Cu3P) has been designed and successfully prepared by a mild one-step solvothermal method. Inspired by the porous characteristic of sponges, the mesoporous structure with a much larger surface area has been constructed by adjusting the reaction conditions and the element composition of copper and nickel to have more active sites, thus broadening linear range. The precisely designed heterogeneous nanostructure and the unique mesoporous morphology of Ni2P-Cu3P were confirmed and characterized by the XRD and TEM analysis. Electrochemical oxidation of glucose on the composite modified glassy-carbon electrode (Ni2P-Cu3P/GCE) was measured by chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry. At the optimal test potential of + 0.64 V, the Ni2P-Cu3P/GCE hybrid electrode possessed an ultra-high sensitive response of 4700 μA mM−1 cm−2 to glucose, in a broad linear range from 4 μM to 5 mM, and a low detection limit of 0.1 μM at an S/N ratio of 3. The electrode also exhibits excellent anti-interference properties towards other common co-existing electroactive distractions, such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, urea, dopamine, etc.

Abstract:We report the fabrication and testing of an ultrafast response nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on the use of interlaced chain structure Au@CuS nanomaterial. The new Au@CuS nanomaterial was synthesized by a facile solvothermal method from L-cysteine、Cu(NO3)2·3H2O and Au Seeds without using additional surfactants or templates. The combination of Au and CuS solves the problems of poor electrical conductivity of CuS and the susceptibility of Au to toxicity, while the interlaced chain structure exposes more active sites to facilitate the diffusion of glucose molecules with a low resistance to increase the inter-electron transfer rate. The non-enzymatic Au@CuS-based glucose sensor showed a wide linear range (up to 9 mM) with excellent sensitivity (5817.37 and 3629.78 A mM−1cm−2), ultrafast response time (<0.1 s), excellent selectivity and outstanding long-term stability. Further, the designed glucose sensor was used to determine glucose in human blood serum sample with satisfactory result.
