Abstract:Barnyard grass ( Echinochloa crus-galli L.) is a C4 plant highly resistant to unfavorable environmental factors, such as high intensities of white and far red light. Under such conditions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced excessively, which may damage the photosystems. One of the mechanisms that prevent oxidative stress and determining the high tolerance of E. crus-galli to changes in the intensity or quality of light could be functioning of NDH complex in chloroplasts. Due to the differences in structure and metabolism mesophyll (M) and bundle sheath (BS) chloroplasts of barnyard grass may respond differently to environmental conditions, but NDH complex exists both in M and BS chloroplasts and amount of NDH subunits is 1,5-1,7 time higher in BS than M. The influence of the NDH complex on the degree of reduction of the plastoquinone pool can results in strong phosphorylation of LHCII (light-harvesting complex of photosystem II) systems in different light conditions. This in turn provides more efficient cyclic electron transport and production of ATP. These may be mechanisms that protect against production of ROS, which disturbed the photosynthetic apparatus during light stress.
