Abstract:Wolfram's hypergraph dynamics should replace outmoded models in physics. This should even more so be the case if experimental evidence for the theory is found (which I believe is probable). However, due to the breadth and depth of the theory, it may be difficult to produce experimental evidence which falsifies it. Some of Wolfram's personal work relating to his physics project is philosophical, and so mechanics of particular phenomena in the natural world can become a triviality or an aside. In other words, the general theory "casts a wide net", and it is the philosophical topics I will challenge. I find that Wolfram must adopt a radical epistemology through his so-called Observer Theory because there is no clear notion of Truth. Tegmark believes in an objective Truth, but I find its relation to the observer untenable, and the proof of his Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH) is gematria. I argue both Wolfram and Tegmark conflate the inherent potential of mathematical truths with their instantiation or actuality in reality, making a similar error to the "so-called" Pythagoreans rebuked by Aristotle. Nonetheless, I believe that combinatorial structures of the kind used in the physics project (abstract rewriting, directed acyclic graphs) will be the future of physics as we know it.

Abstract:Despite its amazing quantitative successes and contributions to revolutionary technologies, physics currently faces many unsolved mysteries ranging from the meaning of quantum mechanics to the nature of the dark energy that will determine the future of the Universe. It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from 'The Future of Physics' by William D Phillips and 'What characterises topological effects in physics?' by Gerard 't Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. This paper is presented as a preface to exciting developments by senior and young scientists in the years that lie ahead, and a complement to the less authoritative popular accounts by journalists.

Abstract:This book represents a continuation, an elaboration, and possibly a clear explanation of the ideas which were expounded in the previous book Time and Methods in Environmental Interfaces Modeling (henceforth abbreviated as TM, Mihailovic et al 2016). In that book as well as in whole of our published scientific work we were either implicitly or explicitly driven by a need to understand how the space between the human mind and observed physical reality is bridged. Here we use synonymously the terms physical reality and reality since the reality is all of physical existence, and concepts related to it as opposed to those products of our mind which remain on the level of mind. Relying on that book we add our new experiences in research in which physics plays a dominant role. To these experiences we attached some epistemological features as well as a view of physics through the optics of Godel Incompleteness Theorems (Godel 1931). Abstract:Since Descartes' dualism, with his res extensa and res cogitans, six fundamental problems in the philosophy and natural history of mind are these: 1. how does mind act on matter? 2. If mind does not act on matter is mind a mere epiphenomenon? 3. What might be the source of free will? 4. What might be the source of a responsible free will? 5. Why might it have been selectively advantageous to evolve consciousness? 6. What is consciousness? I approach the first five of the above six problems based on two physical postulates. First the mind-brain system is a quantum coherent, but reversibly decohering and recohering system. This allows me to answer 1) above, mind does not act causally on brain at all, rather it acausally decohers to classicity (for all practical purposes), hence has consequences for brain and body as matter. Epiphenomenalism is averted. A quantum mind, because it is acausal on Copenhagen including Born, yields a free will, but a merely random free will, not a responsible free will. Second, the most radical part of this article proposes that the quantum classical interface is not always describable by a law: specifically in a special relativity setting, no function, F, maps the present state of the system mind-brain into its future. In its place is a nonrandom yet lawless process. I seek in this non-random yet lawless process a source for a responsible free will. Finally, if the quantum-classical boundary can be non-random yet lawless, then no algorithmic simulation of the world or ourselves can calculate the real world, hence the evolutionary selective advantages for evolving consciousness to know it may be great. I make no progress on problem 6, the hard problem of qualia.

Abstract:The major advances in physics have been through counterintuitive breakthroughs-- ideas that seemed to go against prevailing convictions. In the twentieth century the Special and General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics have provided very good examples of this process. However, twentieth century physics has led to an impasse, one of the most important unsolved problems being the unification of gravitation with other interactions. This has led to another sacred tenet of physics, viz., spacetime as a smooth manifold, being questioned in latest approaches, be it Quantum Super Strings or other Quantum Gravity and similar theories. In particular spacetime described by an underpinning of Planck scale oscillators is investigated.

Abstract:Almost a century on from the culmination of the first revolution in quantum physics, we are poised for another. Even as we engage in the creation of impactful quantum technologies, it is imperative for us to face the challenges in understanding the phenomenology of various emergent forms of quantum matter. This will involve building on decades of progress in quantum condensed matter physics, and going beyond the well-established Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm for quantum matter. I outline and discuss several outstanding challenges, including the need to explore and identify the organisational principles that can guide the development of theories, key experimental phenomenologies that continue to confound, and the formulation of methods that enable progress. These efforts will enable the prediction of new quantum materials whose properties facilitate the creation of next generation technologies.

Abstract:To our best knowledge, there are no problem books on cosmology yet, that would include its spectacular recent achievements. We believe there is a strong need for such now, when cosmology is swiftly becoming a strict and vast science, and the book would be extremely useful for the youth pouring in this area of research. Indeed, the only way to rise over the popular level in any science is to master its alphabet, that is, to learn to solve problems. Of course, most of modern textbooks on cosmology include problems. However, a reader, exhausted by high theory, may often be thwarted by the lack of time and strength to solve them. Might it be worth sometimes to change the tactics and just throw those who wish to learn to swim into the water? We present an updated version of the "Dynamics of the Universe in Problems" We have the following new sections, 'Gravitational Waves', "Interactions in the Dark Sector", "Horizons" and "Quantum Cosmology" . A number of new problems have been added to almost every section. The total number of problems exceeds fifteen hundred. Free Will in the Theory of Everything

Abstract:From what is known today about the elementary particles of matter and the forces that control their behaviour, it may be observed that a host of obstacles to our further understanding remain to be overcome. Most researchers conclude that drastically new concepts must be investigated, new starting points are needed, older structures and theories, in spite of their successes, will have to be overthrown, and new, superintelligent questions will have to be asked and investigated. In short, they say that we shall need new physics. Here, we argue in a different manner. Today, no prototype, or toy model, of any so-called theory of everything exists, because the demands required of such a theory appear to be conflicting. The demands that we propose include locality, special and general relativity, together with a fundamental finiteness not only of the forces and amplitudes, but also of nature’s set of dynamical variables. We claim that the two ingredients we have today, quantum field theory and general relativity, do indeed go a long way towards satisfying such elementary requirements. Putting everything together in a grand synthesis is like solving a gigantic puzzle. We argue that we need the correct analytical tools to solve this puzzle. Finally, it seems obvious that this solution will leave room neither for `divine intervention’, nor for `free will’, an observation that, all by itself, can be used as a clue. We claim that this reflects on our understanding of the deeper logic underlying quantum mechanics.

Abstract:$^1S_0$ pairing in nuclear matter is investigated by taking the hadron mass decrease into account via the ``In-Medium Bonn potential'' which was recently proposed by Rapp et al. The resulting gap is significantly reduced in comparison with the one obtained with the original Bonn-B potential and we ascertain that the meson mass decrease is mainly responsible for this reduction.

The interrelation of the concepts of symmetry breaking, quasiaverages and quantum protectorate was analyzed in the context of quantum theory and statistical physics. The main aim of this analysis was to demonstrate the connection and interrelation of these conceptual advances of the many-body physics and to try to show explicitly that those concepts, though different in details, have a certain common features. Some problems in the field of statistical physics of complex materials and systems e.g. foundation of the microscopic theory of magnetism and superconductivity were pointed in relation to these ideas.

Abstract:Recently there has been an explosion of books and articles complaining about the weirdness of Quantum Mechanics and crying out for a solution. Three problems in particular have been singled out: the double-slit experiment, the measurement problem, and entanglement. One of these (entanglement) was the subject of an episode of the BBC TV show NOVA. In this article it is shown that Quantum Field Theory, as formulated by Julian Schwinger, provides simple solutions for all three problems, and others as well.

Abstract:From the perspective of the physics of complex systems (1) we deal with the current state of mod-ern physics including the crisis in physics demonstrated through its epistemological, psychological, economical as well as the social context; (2) considering the strength of the Goedel s Incompleteness Theorems we point out the following open questions in physics: (i) the limits of the precision of certainty, (ii) the limits of making decisions on information and (iii) the limitations of reasoning that sometimes affect progress, (3) since further advances will necessarily require synergy between physics and seemingly distinct fields - mathematics, information science, chemistry, biology, medicine, psychology, and art. We illustrate this relation by providing examples based on our research. Point (1) is discussed in Ch1 while Ch2-Ch5 encompasses the point (2) and point (3) is covered in Ch6-Ch10.

Abstract:This is the first of a series of papers that we intend to publish about the epistemology of fundamental physics in its current state. One of the main objectives of these papers is to improve our understanding of fundamental physics (and modern physics in particular) from an epistemological and interpretative perspective (i.e. versus formal perspective). Another main objective is to investigate and assess the merit of searching for a unified physical theory (the so-called ``theory of everything'') considering the fact that contemporary physics is a collection of theories created and developed by different individuals and groups of scientists in different eras of history reflecting different levels of scientific, philosophical and epistemological development and dealing with largely separate physical phenomena and hence such unification may mean ``stitching together'' an inhomogeneous collection of theoretical structures which may be clumsy (if not impossible) at least from an epistemological viewpoint.

Abstract:If the results of the first LHC run are not betraying us, many decades of particle physics are culminating in a complete and consistent theory for all nongravitational physics: the standard model. But despite this monumental achievement there is a clear sense of disappointment: many questions remain unanswered. Remarkably, most unanswered questions could just be environmental, and disturbingly to some the existence of life may depend on that environment. Meanwhile there has been increasing evidence that the seemingly ideal candidate for answering these questions, string theory, gives an answer few people initially expected: a large “landscape” of possibilities that can be realized in a multiverse and populated by eternal inflation. At the interface of “bottom-up” and “top-down” physics, a discussion of anthropic arguments becomes unavoidable. Developments in this area are reviewed, focusing especially on the last decade.
