Abstract:Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach for design, analyze, and manage complex systems. In the context of product development, it can be considered as a systematic methodology to ensure that all aspects of a product work together seamlessly to meet the desired objectives, which typically involves several key steps, from requirement analysis, to verification & validation steps. During each step of the systems engineering process, different decisions should be made by various stakeholders, and whether a successful product can finally be achieved is determined by these decisions to a great extent. However, most of the decisions are still made by the stakeholders according to their experiences, and a technique which can effectively support the decision-making process is still lacking. Therefore, this paper introduces some basic concepts of causal discovery, and discusses its potential applications on systems engineering. First, some basic concepts relating to systems engineering and causal discovery are introduced. Second, the potential applications of causal discovery on different steps of systems engineering are discussed. Finally, the authors draw the conclusion and point out the future research direction.
