Abstract:Full-color luminescent carbon dots (CDs) possess enormous feasible applications in fluorescence sensing. However, the modulation of luminescent emission requires proper synthesis strategies with distinctive precursors to regulate the surface chemistry of the CDs. In this work, the full-color CDs were prepared with the same reactants by adjusting the reaction solvent to cover the entire spectral range. The factors that determined their luminescence caused by solvents were discussed. We found that CDs had a rapid sensing ability to Fe3+ with a wide detection range and high accuracy. Moreover, the discriminant model of jujube species depending on internal Fe3+ content was established successfully using principal component analysis and Bayesian discriminant analysis. This study provides a novel perspective for the preparation of full-color CDs by the same reactants and provides strong application potential in the identification of jujube species by a fluorescent sensor.

Abstract:Carbon dots have been popular luminescent materials because of their excellent fluorescence properties, but the low quantum yield limits their application. Heteroatom doping is a more convenient and popular approach to increase the quantum yield of carbon dots. Here, a novel N,S,P heteroatom co-doped carbon dots (N,S,P-CDs) was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using m-phenylenediamine, L-cysteine and phosphoric acid as raw materials. The as-prepared N,S,P-CDs showed excellent photoluminescence properties with fluorescence quantum yield up to 41%, which greatly encourages their application in fluorescence sensing. The N,S,P-CDs exhibited good fluorescence stability under salt solution, xenon lamp irradiation and ultraviolet lamp irradiation except for high sensitivity to extreme acidity. The fluorescence intensity of N,S,P-CDs can be decreased as high as 85% when pH of the solution changes from 2.50-4.75, that is, small fluctuation in pH can cause an intense response of the fluorescence of N,S,P-CDs. Therefore, an excellent fluorescence sensing platform for accurate monitoring pH of extreme acidity is constructed. In addition, the N,S,P-CDs can be applied for quantitative detection of folic acid based on the strong quenching effect of folic acid on the fluorescence of the N,S,P-CDs. A good linearity is obtained in the concentration range of 4.85-82.45 μM, with the detection limit of 0.148 μM. The constructed sensing platform was used for the determination of folic acid in the actual sample of range juice, oatmeal and tablets with satisfactory results.

Abstract:To develop a feasible, sensitive, and essential sensor is important for the identification of Fe 3+ ions and ascorbic acid (AA). Herein, highly fluorescent heteroatom co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) with a quantum yield (QY) of 24.6% were synthesized, using hydrothermal treatment of L -cysteine (Cys) and 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANSA). The fluorescence emission of the as-prepared N,S-CDs was quenched strongly by Fe 3+ ions, and this was further recovered by the reduction effect of AA on Fe 3+ . Based on this, continuous fluorescence sensing of Fe 3+ and AA with an "on-off-on" style was developed. The detection of Fe 3+ and AA were in relatively wider linear ranges of 5.00–105 μmol L −1 and 4.97–54.8 μmol L −1 , with a detection limit of 0.10 μmol L −1 and 2.4 nmol L −1 (S/N = 3), respectively. Then, the N,S-CDs were successfully used to measure Fe 3+ ions and AA in some daily food samples, and this method exhibited some advantages over most other reported techniques in the term of response speed, quantum yield, and detection limit.

Carbon quantum dots as fluorescence sensors for label-free detection of folic acid in biological samples

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been fabricated by a facile single-step pyrolysis method from citric acid and ethylene imine polymer. When excited at 359 nm, CQDs show intense blue fluorescence at 434 nm. The fluorescence can be effectively quenched by folic acid (FA), which is attributed to the combination of static quenching and inner filter effect. Thus, the CQDs are developed as an efficient fluorescent sensing platform for label-free sensitive and selective detection of FA. Key parameters influencing the detection were investigated, such as incubation time, salt concentration, selectivity and potential interferences. Under the optimal conditions, a good linearity was observed for the emission intensity against 1.14-47.57 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The limit of detection was found to be 0.38 μM. The practical application of the sensing system was demonstrated by analyzing FA in human urine samples. The sample recoveries fell in the range of 82.0%-113.1% with RSDs ≤ 10.9%, which presented its reliable and feasible application in real samples.
A unique "turn-on" fluorescence signalling strategy for highly specific detection of ascorbic acid using carbon dots as sensing probe

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) that showed strong blue fluorescence were successfully synthesised from sodium alginate via furnace pyrolysis. The single step pyrolytic synthesis was simple to perform while yielded CDs with high photostability, good water solubility and minimum by-products. In order to design the probe with "turn-on" sensing capability, the CDs were screened against a series of metal cations to first "turn-off" the fluorescence. It was found that ferric ions (Fe(3+)) were most responsive and effective in quenching the fluorescence of CDs. Based on this observation, the conditioning of the probe was performed to ensure the fluorescence was completely quenched, while not overloading the system with Fe(3+). At the optimised condition, the CDs-Fe(3+) mixture served as a highly specific detection probe for ascorbic acid (AA). The analytical potential of the probe was evaluated and showed a good linear range of response for AA concentration of 24-40μg/mL. The selectivity study against other possible co-existing species was carried out and proved that our unique "turn-on" fluorescence signalling strategy was highly effective and selective towards AA as the target analyte. The probe was demonstrated for quantification of AA in real samples, which was the commercially available vitamin C supplement. The result showed good accuracy with minimum deviation from standard method adopted for validation purpose.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a unique class of fascinating carbon-based fluorescent sensors with strong photoluminescence, chemical stability and good biocompatibility. In this work, new copper-doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) were successfully synthesized from citric acid, ammonium tartrate and CuCl2 via a household microwave. The Cu-CDs exhibit excitation-independent emissions, high fluorescence quantum yield (~34.74%) and excellent fluorescence stability. The fluorescence of Cu-CDs can be directly quenched by ascorbic acid (AA) linearly in the range of 0.1–3.0 μM based on the inner filter effect (IFE). The limit of detection (LOD) can be determined to 27 nM. Meanwhile, an "on-off-on" sensing system based on the complex of Cu-CDs and Fe3+ is designed and served as highly specific detection probes for AA through the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with a lower LOD of 6 nM, which is one of the best reports. The proposed methods provide obvious advantages of convenience, simplicity, rapid response, high selectivity and sensitivity. Besides, good results also have been acquired for AA detection in real medicine samples.

Abstract:In this study, Cu doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) of uniform particle size and good water solubility was synthesized using Angelica Sinensis Radix as precursor materials through a one-step hydrothermal. The Lucigenin-(Cu-CDs) chemiluminescence sensor allows the simultaneous determination of o-toluenesulfonamide (TFA) and sulfamethoxazole (STZ) concentrations. Under optimal conditions, the sensor demonstrates the capability to detect TFA and STZ within the ranges of 50 μM-800 μM and 15 μM-120 μM, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) for TFA and STZ are determined as 0.09 μM and 0.05 μM, respectively. While the limits of quantification (LOQ) are established at 0.3 μM and 0.17 μM, respectively. The feasibility of the method for determining TFA and STZ content in chicken samples was substantiated, demonstrating spiked recovery rates ranging from 97.5% to 102.3 % and 97.5%-99.8 %, respectively. The possible reaction mechanism was clarified based on chemiluminescence, UV-vis measurement and free radical analysis results. The newly established system is characterized by stability, convenience, and robust anti-interference capabilities, thus expanding the application of carbon dots and offering a promising strategy for the detection of TFA and STZ.

Abstract:A switchable sensor based on N and S co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) was developed to determine ascorbic acid (AA) content in common fruits via fluorescence quenching of N,S-CDs by Fe3+ (off) and recovery by AA (on). TEM showed that the particle size was 2.35-7.95 nm with an average diameter of 5.12 nm. XPS and FTIR confirmed the presence of -OH, -COOH and -NH2 on N,S-CDs surface. UV-vis and FTIR revealed that the coordination of -COOH and -NH2 on N,S-CDs surface with Fe3+ accounted for FL quenching, and the release of -NH2 from coordination complexes due to the reduction of Fe3+ by AA led to partly FL recovery. The sensor allowed detecting AA in the linear range of 10-200 μmol/L with a LOD of 4.69 μmol/L. AA contents in common fruits detected by the sensor were in good agreement with the reference method (P > 0.05), indicating a practical fluorescent sensor for AA detection in common fruits.
Detection of Extreme Acidity Based on Carbon Dots: One‐Step Gram‐Scaled Syntheses, Ratiometric Emission Photoluminescent Probe, and Hand‐Held Visual Detection

Abstract:The one‐step mildly synthesized carbon dots (CDs) achieve reversible switching between cyan and orange‐red emission by adjusting the [H+] under extremely acidic conditions. In combination with a smartphone, a fluorescent sensor is built based on CDs for the successful on‐spot visual detection of [H+]. It is a significant challenge to develop acidity probes suitable for use in extremely acidic conditions, especially to achieve real‐time on‐site detection. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) are synthesized on a gram‐scale under mild conditions using 3‐phenylpropionaldehyde as precursors. The CDs have excellent robustness, showing distinguished anti‐photobleaching and ionic stability. Dramatically, a visual transition of the fluorescent color of CDs from cyan to orange is observed when the concentration of H+ ([H+]) increased under high acidity conditions, owing to the generation of another emission peak in the red‐light region. Taking advantage of the optical properties, CDs are designed as a ratiometric sensing platform for the detection of extreme acidity. Furthermore, the platform for [H+] possesses high selectivity and excellent anti‐interference capability. In extremely acidic wastewater, I595 nm/I480 nm and [H+] maintain a very good linear relationship (R2 = 0.996). Moreover, a smartphone is employed to obtain the red‐green‐blue (RGB) values of the samples to realize hand‐held detection. By measuring the R/G, the platform exhibits ultrasensitive recognition of [H+] in the range of 1–9 mol L−1 with R2 of 0.992. This work paves an avenue for the design of rapid and on‐site CDs based sensors for critical environmental applications.

Abstract:This work describes a "switch-on" fluorescence approach for sensing of ascorbic acid (AA) in food samples. In the present method, the fluorescence intensity (FL) of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was first quenched by addition of MnO2 nanosheets through an inner filter effect to form a CQDs-MnO2 probe. When reductive AA was introduced into the quenched CQDs solution, the added MnO2 was destroyed due to the redox reaction between AA and MnO2 nanosheets, and the FL of the system was recovered. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection for AA was 42 nM, with a wide concentration linear range of 0.18-90 μM. Furthermore, the as-fabricated fluorescent sensing system was successfully applied to the analysis of AA in fresh fruits, vegetables, and commercial fruit juices samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential vitamin in humans, and numerous AA detection studies have been conducted. Most quantum dots (QDs)-based approaches depend on redox reactions involving AA, and they require the introduction of an intermediate (e.g., metal ions , OPD , TMB) or the assembly of fluorescent substances with nanosheets (such as MnO 2 ) that can be degraded by AA. These methods are complex, unstable, and are susceptible to interferences. To address these problems, a core-shell fluorescence probe was developed for turn-on sensing of AA. The transition metal oxide shell FeOOH was generated around the surface of CuInZnS QDs to quench the fluorescence. In the presence of AA, the FeOOH shell was decomposed into Fe 2+ and the fluorescence of QDs was recovered. Using a physical shell, the obtained nanocomposite realized direct AA detection, avoiding the effects of interfering substances caused by QDs exposure. Moreover, our probe showed great potential in point-of-care tests and was readily adapted for use as a smartphone-assisted paper sensor.

Abstract:Herein, we presented an ingenious method for the detection of trace ascorbic acid (AA) using fluorescent sensing system, which was composed of periodate (IO 4 − ) and nitrogen-boron co-doped carbon dots (N, B-CDs). Highly photoluminescent carbon dots with a quantum yield of 84.5% were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid, ethylenediamine and boric acid as raw materials. The fluorescence of N, B-CDs could be statically quenched by IO 4 − , and non-fluorescent complexes were formed on the surface of carbon dots at the same time. With the pre-addition of ascorbic acid, the process of fluorescence quenching by IO 4 − was inhibited due to the preferential redox reaction between AA and IO 4 − . Based on the principle mentioned above, we designed the "inhibition" fluorescent sensor that can easily realize the detection of AA, and an extremely low limit of detection of 0.035 nM with a linear interval of 0–1600 pM was obtained. In addition, the sensing system has been applied to the detection of AA in human urine and obtained satisfactory results. The developed "inhibition" fluorescent sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity, has shown great potential and application prospects in the field of biosensing.

Abstract:Novel ionic liquid-functionalized carbon quantum dots (IL-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, and characterized with FT-IR, TEM and XPS. The IL-CDs exhibited narrower particle size distribution with more uniform dispersion and the surface potential changes from negative to positive due to the function of IL. IL-CDs could be quenched (“turned off”) after adding ascorbic acid (AA), and as an “on–off”, fluorescent probe could be established for direct analysis AA. The linear range of AA was 0.34–30.00 μg/mL and the LOD was 0.11 μg/mL. The method was successfully applied to the determination of AA in real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Bright, blue fluorescent carbon quantum dots (N-CDs) were carried out utilizing phenylenediamine and ascorbic acid as raw precursor through the hydrothermal method. The as-designed N-CDs suggested excitation-dependent characteristic changing from 340 nm to 380 nm. Moreover, Folic acid could availably quench the fluorescence intensity of the N-CDs. According to this experimental phenomenon, the sensitivity and selectivity of N-CDs for folic acid detection were developed. Under optimal experimental conditions, the as-prepared probe displayed excellent linearity with the folic acid concentration changing from 0.5 to 200 μM, and the limit of detection was 0.079 μM. Furthermore, the as-prepared probe indicated good sensitivity towards folic acid sensing in glucose and bovine serum samples. The recoveries of 95.9-104.8% and 98.6-106.9% were obtained in glucose and bovine serum samples, respectively. The corresponding relative standard deviation was lower than 2.74% and 2.91%, respectively. With preeminent sensitivity and selectivity, this as-developed nanosensor afforded a prospective platform for measuring folic acid in real samples. Furthermore, this N-CDs could be applied for the temperature detection.

Abstract:Recently, syntheses of various kinds of carbon dots (CDs) and their application as ions sensing probes, as well as the relative mechanism, have attracted great attention of scientists. In this paper, sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (SN-CDs) were synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid and thiourea as precursors with uniform size and excellent fluorescence properties. Importantly, based on the inner filter effect (IFE), the fluorescence of the SN-CDs was quenched by Cr(VI), and thus can be applied as an "on–off" fluorescent sensor with high selectivity and high sensitivity. The detection limit was 0.428 μM, much lower than that from the conventional detection methods. Interestingly, the SN-CDs/Cr(VI) system can also act as an "off–on" fluorescent sensor for detecting ascorbic acid (AA) or sulfide by converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and thus weakening the IFE, with the detection limits of 0.686 μM and 0.872 μM, respectively. Consequently, an "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor based on the SN-CDs was established, showing the great potential for detecting Cr(VI), AA and sulfide effectively. Moreover, the proposed sensor has been successfully applied to quantitatively detect in actual samples.

Abstract:This study develops a high sensitive and selective "on-off-on" fluorescent probe for sequential detection of iron ion (Fe3+) and ascorbic acid (AA) based on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs), which were synthesized by using chitosan and κ-carrageenan as raw materials through one-step hydrothermal protocol. The synthesized N,S-CDs possess particularly high quantum yield (QY = 59.31%), excellent stability and excitation dependent behavior, showing great potential for practical applications. Furthermore, N,S-CDs provided high selectivity and strong anti-interference to Fe3+ due to its fluorescence quenching performance, revealing a wide linear concentration range from 1 to 100 μM for the detection of Fe3+ ion with an extremely low limit of detection of 57 nM, and presented reliable and accurate results in actual sample detection of Fe3+. The overall fluorescence quenching mechanism of N,S-CDs with Fe3+ was due to the formation of N,S-CDs/Fe3+ initiated to the aggregation and electron transfer of N,S-CDs, resulting in the static quenching of fluorescence. More interestingly, AA could reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ and efficaciously recover the quenched fluorescence of N,S-CDs/Fe3+. N,S-CDs/Fe3+ as "turn-on" fluorescent probe was further applied for detecting AA in a linear range of 0.5-90 μM with a detection limit of 38 nM.

Abstract:Carbon-based sensors for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and ferric ions have drawn a great deal of attention recently, owing to their excellent optical properties and good biocompatibility for biological applications. In this work, a series of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were fabricated by a microwave-assistant approach with a combination of dl-malic acid and urea as precursors. Under optimal experimental conditions, NCDs with an average size of 4.52 ± 0.05 nm were prepared, containing amino N and C–N functional groups on the surface of carbon cores. Optical analysis showed that the NCDs exhibited excitation-dependent and concentration-dependent emission properties. A single emission at 450 nm was observed with two luminescent centers at 280 and 370 nm for concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 mg/mL. Moreover, the NCDs were further used as a fluorescence sensor to detect AA and Fe3+ in solution. From the metal ion sensing research, Fe3+ demonstrated significant quenching abilities on NCDs with a detection limit of 1.9 μM. More importantly, the NCDs also showed an excellent quenching response by AA through the static quenching mechanism and inner filter effect with a detection limit of 2.6 μM. Additionally, the low cell toxicity against MA104 and 293T cells from both monkeys and humans were affirmed, respectively. Therefore, the NCDs developed in the present work provide a “turn-off” strategy for the highly sensitive detection of AA and Fe3+ ions and can be potentially applied in both environmental and biological systems.

Ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric detection for uric acid using bifunctional carbon dots

Abstract:Iron, cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (FeCo/N-CDs) were fabricated firstly by a one pot hydrothermal method in this study. As well as exhibiting peroxidase-like activity, the prepared FeCo/N-CDs emitted fluorescence at 475 nm upon the excitation of 360 nm. A dual-signal biosensor relied on ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric method was developed for detecting uric acid (UA) based on FeCo/N-CDs-catalyzed oxidation of OPD. Uricase catalyzed the production of H2O2 from UA, and FeCo/N-CDs catalyzed H2O2 into the •OH radicals, contributing to the oxidation of 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) from o-phenylenediamine (OPD). The color from colorless to yellow was observed and DAP can quench the fluorescence of FeCo/N-CDs via the inner filter effect (IFE), accompanied with a significant fluorescence enhancement of DAP at 580 nm. The fluorescence emission and UV–vis absorption intensities were thus affected by sequential additions of UA. Quantitative analysis of UA was based on the fluorescence intensity of DAP/FeCo/N-CDs (I580/I475) and color records. The calibration curve was linear within the range of 0.2–150 μM and the limit of detection was low as 0.05 μM. The biosensor was successfully applied to the detection of UA in serum and urine samples.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) derivatives are typically employed as antioxidants in food and pharmaceutical processing. However, excessive sulfite intake could trigger serious health problems. Hence, it is urgent to establish a rapid and effective system for monitoring SO2. This study adopted a one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize dual-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CECDs) and developed a ratiometric sensor for sulfite using CECDs-Cr (VI) composites. The emission intensity ratio (I440/I500) of the CECDs-Cr (VI) composites increased considerably with the addition of HSO3-. A method based on the ratiometric sensor was established for SO2 derivatives with advanced efficiency and excellent linearity over a broad concentration range of 0-500 μM (R2 = 0.9946). Four medicine-food homology materials (MFHMs) fumigated with sulfur have been accurately detected using this approach. Furthermore, a portable test tube was prepared to achieve rapid and semi-quantitative detection of SO2 residues and applied to real samples. This work presents an effective approach to develop a rapid on-site detection platform for sulfite residues in food and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Carbon dots without heteroatoms-doping and surface modifications were designed to be a novel chemosensing strategy on the quantitative detection of uric acid (UA) with the aid of uricase-induced enzymatic reaction and Fenton reaction. In this work, ascorbic acid (AA)-derived carbon dots (A-CDs) were prepared in the mixture of ethanol and water via one-step hydrothermal synthesis at a relatively low temperature (120 °C) for 10 h. The resultant A-CDs were proved to be excitation-independent. When excited at the wavelength of 420 nm, the nanodots displayed green fluorescence (535 nm) which was then linearly quenched as UA concentration increased in the range of 0–56 μM, according to which the detection limit was calculated to be 0.49 μM. With regards to the excellent sensitivity and selectivity to UA, real sample assay was performed on the A-CDs detection system, which provided relatively reliable recoveries of UA contained in human serum/urine. Besides, in view of the high quantum yield, the A-CDs were applied to live-cell imaging assay and were considered to become an alternative tracer tool in biomedical imaging.
