Abstract:In the traditional urban landscape design, visual sense is regarded as absolutely important while consideration of acoustic environment is inadequate. In order to promote a new viewpoint for urban landscape design and to enrich the design methods, the concept of soundscape was introduced. Combining sound components with landscape design leads to the concept of soundscape and its features. The type and features of soundscape, and its relation with human perception was observed and analyzed in a survey of city parks . The explanation of the factors, stages and levels of soundscape design built up the soundscape design framework. Soundscape plays an important role in urban landscape. Natural, background, man-made and activity sounds provide meaningful information for human landscape cognition. They enrich and complement human cognitive methods and subjective experience of objective environment. With plastic arts and building technology, soundscape design comprehensively meets the functional needs of human activities, advances the relationship between human being and environment, and promotes the humanity of the objective environment.
Applying the methods of image evaluation and spatial analysis to study the sound environment of urban street areas

Abstract:One important aspect of the urban environment is its sound environment, in which the sound environment of street areas plays a significant role. In this research, we employed methods of subjective image evaluation and spatial analysis of soundscape formation, in studying the sound environments of urban street areas. In Saga City, Japan, we analysed the structure and main sound components of urban street areas, as well as the sound pressure levels through on-site investigation. Through image evaluation, we obtained people's ratings of each sound component in terms of “preference” and “congruence”. Simultaneously, we interviewed people on site for their evaluation of the sound environment using semantic differential profiles. Lastly, we performed a spatial analysis of the site, identifying the different types of street sound environment and their characteristics using cluster analysis, as well as noting the interaction of auditory image and visual factors. The methods presented by this research can help us understand the sound environment of urban street areas more comprehensively and vividly, and to point out a unique direction in the research of urban sound environment as well as the planning of urban street areas.

Abstract:The establishment of the concept of soundscape has brought about a new aspect for sound environment, and many conceptual and practical researches have been performed around the world. However, the notation of soundscape, in other words, the way how we can record, describe or express the soundscape, still need to be studied furthermore. Soundscape is the concept of an environment of sound ( sonic environment) with emphasis on the way how it is perceived and understood by individual, or by a society, and thus it depends on the relationship between individual and any such environment. Therefore, the notation of soundscape should put emphasis on not only the physical characteristics but also the perception of the people, as well as the relationship between them. In this paper, firstly the notation of soundscape was reviewed with the concept of soundscapegraphy, which was composed of objective information, subjective information, environmental information and analysis information. Then, the methodology of making soundscapegraphy was discussed from the stage of data collection, data processing, mapping to analysis, and in the data processing GIS technique was applied. Next, with the case study of Saga urban areas, the analysis of urban soundscape was performed by means of soundscapegraphy. Finally, the applications of soundscapegraphy and the prospect for future research were discussed. Soundscapegraphy can be a proper and applicable method for the notation and analysis of soundscape.

Abstract:The three elements structure "sound, environment and human" is the core of soundscape. These three elements are closely related, influenced by each other. The specific meanings of the three elements, and how they interact, should be noted in soundscape studies. Only the three elements are considered together, can the findings obtained be convincing. In this paper, the three elements structure is made as a basis and the concept of sound expectation is put forward, which means: people will have a unique expectation on soundscape when they face a particular landscape. A set of research context is designed for sound expectation in order to apply this concept to actual projects. A Case Study of soundscape research in "New Lakeside Park" demonstrates the authenticity and feasibility of sound expectation concept.

Abstract:Soundscape is a new interdisciplinary field of landscape and acoustics. This paper is intended to study the relationship between soundscape and culture. That is, the Chinese culture's pursuit of acoustic beauty from three aspects as poetries, writings and drawings. It is demonstrated by the case study of soundscape in West Lake scenic area, with particular emphasis on humane attribute. The study has approached by three steps as classification - case study - promotion to region. The major attractions of West Lake scenic area is divided into natural and artificial categories, and the typical cases selected are Orioles Singing in the Willows and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping hill. The two cases are analyzed from two aspects as the cultural background and humanities artistic conception, in order to prove the subject. And the importance of soundscape culture research to the construction of West Lake scenic area is declared further.

Abstract:Aimed at the visual-centered tendency in landscape plan,a new method based on soundscape design was adopted.Through in-situ investigations of soundscape on Saga forest park in Japan,soundscape components of urban open spaces were analyzed using statistical method.When subjective evaluation of favor degree and harmony degree towards these components were elucidated,spatial zoning and its characteristics of soundscape were figured out,and the importance weights of soundscape components were computed.The analysis outcome was applied to the soundscape design of Shengzhou Ting Hu water city in China.The minus and plus design method were put forward,and soundscape components and their spatial formation were designed comprehensively.The results show that soundscape design can definitely identify and express inherent sound components of landscape.Soundscape can become an essential constituent in the landscape plan of urban open spaces,and achieve multi-angle approach for the design and evaluation of landscape.

Abstract:The progression of application software and high-speed Internet access has, in general, the ability to commonly engage synesthetic experience. However, current synesthesia systems do not meet their full potential, as they are restricted by the simple display of non-intelligent two-dimensional form. This paper is going to present a system for enhancing visual and auditory attributes connection by augmenting the traditional sound visualization system with natural perceptual properties beyond two-dimensional space. A method of expanding the analysis capabilities of the system over changes in the frequencies and sound pressure levels of the live environmental sound stream was explored. With this method, a semantically rich four-dimensional form of sound containing information regarding audio properties and location could be generated. Some specific scenarios are discussed in order to explore visual form of natural perception of environmental sounds, multimedia voice and musical performance.

Abstract:Background: The field of acoustic ecology emerged from Simon Fraser University in the late 1960s during which time R. Murray Schafer and the World Soundscape Project studied everyday soundscapes and the rise of urban noise. While it was an innovative approach to understanding the relationship between humans and their environments, it reproduced the dominant frameworks of this period. Analysis: This article argues that contemporary acoustic ecology discourse continues to frame noise, silence, and urban acoustic design through a white normative and colour-blind listening framework. This article examines dominant authorship and citation practices within leading journals that publish soundscape literature as well as sound mapping practices. Conclusion: After also surveying seldom-cited soundscape research that interrogates the environmental listening and sound-making practices of BIPOC and marginalized communities, the article concludes that there is a need for contemporary soundscape research to incorporate more intersectional and decolonial modes of environmental listening.

Abstract:We live in a richly structured auditory environment. From the sounds of cars charging towards us on the street to the sounds of music filling a dancehall, sounds like these are generally seen as being instances of things we hear but can also be understood as opportunities for action. In some circumstances, the sound of a car approaching towards us can provide critical information for the avoidance of harm. In the context of a concert venue, sociocultural practices like music can equally afford coordinated activities of movement, such as dancing or music making. Despite how evident the behavioral effects of sound are in our everyday experience, they have been sparsely accounted for within the field of psychology. Instead, most theories of auditory perception have been more concerned with understanding how sounds are passively processed and represented and how they convey information of the world, neglecting than how this information can be used for anything. Here, we argue against these previous rationalizations, suggesting instead that information is instantiated through use and, therefore, is an emergent effect of a perceiver’s interaction with their environment. Drawing on theory from psychology, philosophy and anthropology, we contend that by thinking of sounds as materials, theorists and researchers alike can get to grips with the vast array of auditory affordances that we purposefully bring into use when interacting with the environment.

Abstract:The concept of soundscape was originally coined to study the relationship between humans and their sonic environment. Since then, several definitions of soundscapes have been proposed based on musical, acoustical and ecological perspectives. However, the causal mechanisms that underlie soundscapes have often been overlooked. As a consequence, the term “soundscape” is frequently used in an ambiguous way, alternatively pointing to objective realities or subjective percepts. Through an interdisciplinary review, we identified the main biotic and abiotic factors that condition non-anthropogenic terrestrial soundscapes. A source-filter approach was used to describe sound sources, sound propagation phenomena and receiver’s characteristics. Interdisciplinary information was cross-referenced in order to define relationships between factors, sound sources and filters. Those relationships and the associated references were organized into a functional block diagram. This representation was used to question the different uses and meanings of the soundscape concept found in the literature. Three separate categories were then suggested: distal soundscape, proximal soundscape and perceptual soundscape. Finally, practical examples of these different categories were described, in relation to the diagram. This new systemic approach to soundscapes should help ecoacousticians, bioacousticians, psychoacousticians and environmental managers to better understand soundscapes and protect natural areas in a more significant way.

Abstract:Soundscape measurement has gained attention from researchers across a variety of disciplines and professions. The aim of this study was to explore everyday soundscapes properties as perceived by non-experts and construct a soundscape perception model in the spatiotemporal view and landscape tradition. This study used the conceptual framework of an existing landscape model to construct a soundscape evaluation scale based on the qualitative analysis of 490 semi-structured questionnaires. The evaluation scale has five fundamental dimensions: Perceptible Sound Characteristics, Perceptual Time, Perceptual Place, Audience Subjectivity, and Auditory Imagination. There are 18 primary indexes and 35 secondary indexes. The results indicated that the public's perception schema of soundscape was similar to that of visual landscape, but had more emotional aspects. Thus, the soundscape can produce abundant auditory mapping in the mind through the involvement of the auditory organs and subsequent cognitive processing and people can provide efficient evolution of the perceptible sound environment as feedback. Abstract:The dimension of sound plays a central role as a form of cultural representation. Sound is a means of knowledge and experiential involvement, as it is inextricably linked to place and space, mind and body, cultural context and emotion. This contribution aims to explore how sound design follows different paradigms and methods in the various media. Virtual reality, videogame, cinema and documentary have differently codified rules to provide acoustic verisimilitude to the simulated space, to orient or stimulate the user, to suggest contents or evoke events and to emotionally involve the public. These rules follow artistic principles closer to psychoacoustics than to scientific reproduction of sound in the simulated space. Under what conditions, however, is the scientific simulation of an acoustic space preferable to the more common paradigms of psychoacoustics? How could this be created? Immersive and non-immersive virtual reality for cultural heritage is currently the field of experimentation most open to future developments. Some virtual reality and mixed reality applications will be presented, dedicated to archaeological or historical-artistic contexts, where a fundamental relationship between sound and multisensory interaction has been created.

Abstract:The public realm constitutes the integral connective tissue that defines the contemporary cityscape, within which different individuals, communities and institutions engage with each other through cooperation and negotiation. Sound remains a neglected dimension of this domain, generally coming into consideration only through efforts to ameliorate the urban soundscape and to attend to the impact of environmental noise. As the densification of urban territories continues, the role of sonic experience as a more critical and complex driver for urban design must be reassessed. The project Sound-Frameworks: Collaborative Frameworks for Integrating Sound Within Urban Design and Planning Processes (EC grant agreement ID 101032632) explores new methodologies to accelerate this area of research through the production of three resources: A sound in practice survey, a publication on guidelines for best practice and an online tool to guide the integration of sound in the design of the public realm. This paper discloses the project's initial trajectory and intersectoral objectives. It explores how the synthesis of heterogeneous approaches to working with and thinking through sound can be informed by perspectives developed through environmental acoustics, architecture, spatial planning, sound studies and artistic practice.

Abstract:Abstract The author covers the background of soundscape composition, as initiated by the World Soundscape Project at Simon Fraser University, and soundscape documentation as an activity that is being increasingly practised worldwide. Today there are two striking manifestations of this work: the increasing globalisation of the electroacoustic community, and the increasing sophistication of digital techniques applied to soundscape composition. In addition, the tradition of listening to environmental soundscapes as if they were music is inverted to suggest listening to electroacoustic music as if it were soundscape. What analytical tools and insights would result? The theoretical concepts introduced in soundscape studies and acoustic communication are summarised and applied first to media and digital gaming environments, noting the extensions of both their sound worlds and the related listening attitudes they provoke in terms of analytical and distracted listening. Traditional approaches to acousmatic and soundscape analysis are compared for their commonalities and differences, the latter being mainly their relative balance of attention towards inner and outer complexity. The types of electroacoustic music most amenable to a soundscape based analysis are suggested, along with brief examples of pieces to which such analysis might be directed.

Abstract:Computing practice today depends on visual output to drive almost all user interaction. Other senses, such as audition, may be totally neglected, or used tangentially, or used in highly restricted specialized ways. We have excellent audio rendering through D-A conversion, but we lack rich general facilities for modeling and manipulating sound comparable in quality and flexibility to graphics. We need co-ordinated research in several disciplines to improve the use of sound as an interactive information channel. Incremental and separate improvements in synthesis, analysis, speech processing, audiology, acoustics, music, etc. will not alone produce the radical progress that we seek in sonic practice. We also need to create a new central topic of study in digital audio research. The new topic will assimilate the contributions of different disciplines on a common foundation. The key central concept that we lack is sound as a general-purpose information channel. We must investigate the structure of this information channel, which is driven by the co-operative development of auditory perception and physical sound production. Particular audible encodings, such as speech and music, illuminate sonic information by example, but they are no more sufficient for a characterization than typography is sufficient for a characterization of visual information.

Abstract:The definition of ‘soundscape’ emphasises the perceptual construct of sounds; thus, the mechanism of sound perceptions becomes vital for soundscape evaluations. Using a qualitative approach, this study explored the aspects and processes of sound perceptions and built a perceptual soundscape structure from the insight of sociology. The interview was conducted between January and March 2018, in four urban public spaces. Data reached saturation after 23 participants were interviewed based on the grounded theory approach. Four perceptual aspects of sounds were identified from the semantic coding analysis: sound classification, sound features, psychological reactions, and soundscape preferences. These aspects form a three-level process of perceiving soundscapes: sound classifications, sound appraisals (including sound features and psychological reactions), and finally, judgment (soundscape preferences). Overall, four aspects categorised into three levels of perception make up the soundscape structure. Soundscape preferences are at the most profound level of perception and are informed by the previous three aspects. Soundscape preferences are expressed through descriptive words and narrative ‘image’. The ‘image’ reflects people participating in different activities according to their social background. Social relationships influence soundscape preferences through people’s sound requirements for various activities. The perceptual structure of soundscapes may provide guidance for future soundscape research and soundscape questionnaire design.

Abstract:In the field of environmental acoustics, the conventional approach of reducing 'sound level' does not always deliver the required improvements in quality of life. Soundscape, defined by the ISO as the 'acoustic environment as perceived or experienced and/or understood by a person or people, in context', promotes a holistic approach, regarding sounds as 'resources' rather than just 'wastes'. The first part of this review/position paper, mainly using the works by the author and the teams/collaborators as examples, discusses the current developments in soundscape, in terms of soundscape understating and exchanging, collecting and documenting, harmonising and standardising, creating and designing, and outreaching, showing that while considerable works have been carried out, much work is still needed, in terms of basic research, and more importantly, research towards practice. The second part of this paper then explores a soundscape approach in the urban sound design/planning process. With a proposed framework for designing soundscape in urban open public spaces, considering four key components, including characteristics of each sound source, acoustic effects of the space, social/demographic aspect of the users, and other physical conditions, design potentials are demonstrated.

Abstract:Despite roots in acoustic ecology and soundscape studies, the practice and study of soundscape composition is often grouped with, or has grown out of the acousmatic music tradition. This can be observed in the positioning of soundscape compositions juxtaposed with acousmatic music compositions in concert programmes, CD compilations and university syllabuses. Not only does this positioning inform how soundscape composition is listened to, but also how it is produced, sonically and philosophically. If the making and presenting of representations of environmental sound is of fundamental concern to the soundscape artist, then it must be addressed. As this methodological issue is outside of previous musical concerns, to this degree, we must look to other disciplines that are primarily engaged with the making of representation, and that have thoroughly questioned what it is to make and present representations in the world today. One such discipline is ethnography. After briefly charting the genesis of soundscape composition and its underlying principles and motivations, the rest of the paper will present and develop one perspective, that of considering soundscape composition as ethnography.
