Abstract:Graphenes are an emerging class of carbon nanomaterials whose adsorption properties toward organic compounds have not been well understood. In the present study, graphene nanosheets were prepared by reoxidation and abrupt heating of graphite oxide, which was prepared by sequential chemical oxidation of commercial nonporous graphite powder. Adsorption properties of three aromatic compounds (naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and 1-naphthylamine) and one pharmaceutical compound (tylosin) on graphene nanosheets and graphite oxide were examined to explore the potential of these two adsorbents for the removal of organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. Compared with the literature data of adsorption on carbon nanotubes, adsorption of bulky, flexible tylosin on graphene nanosheets exhibited markedly faster adsorption kinetics, which can be attributed to their opened-up layer structure. Graphene nanosheets and graphite oxide showed similar sequences of adsorption affinity: 1-naphthylamine > 2-naphthol > tylosin > naphthalene (with much larger differences observed on graphite oxide). It was proposed that the strong adsorption of the three aromatic compounds was mainly due to π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions with the graphitic surfaces of adsorbents. Additionally, Lewis acid-base interaction was likely an important factor contributing to the strong adsorption of 1-naphthylamine and tylosin, especially for the O-functionality-abundant graphite oxide. After being normalized on the basis of adsorbent surface area, adsorption affinities of all four tested adsorbates on graphene nanosheets were very close to those on nonporous graphite powder, reflecting complete accessibility of the adsorbent surface area in adsorption.
Porous and hydrophobic graphene-based core–shell sponges for efficient removal of water contaminants

Abstract:Abstract Water pollution is a global environmental problem that has attracted great concern, and functional carbon nanomaterials are widely used in water treatment. Here, to optimize the removal performance of both oil/organic matter and dye molecules, we fabricated porous and hydrophobic core–shell sponges by growing graphene on three-dimensional stacked copper nanowires. The interconnected pores between the one-dimensional nanocore–shells construct the porous channels within the sponge, and the multilayered graphene shells equip the sponge with a water contact angle over 120° even under acidic and alkaline environments, which enables fast and efficient cleanup of oil on or under the water. The core–shell sponge can absorb oil or organic solvents with densities 40–90 times its own, and its oil-sorption capacity is much larger than those of other porous materials like activated carbon and loofah. On the other hand, the adsorption behavior of the core–shell sponge to dyes including methyl orange (MO) and malachite green (MG), also common water pollutants, was also measured. Dynamic adsorption of MG under cyclic compression demonstrated a higher adsorption rate than that in the static state, and an acidic environment was favorable for the adsorption of MO molecules. Finally, the adsorption isotherm for MO molecules was analyzed and fitted with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics were studied in depth as well.

Abstract:This research centres on crafting an environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient nanocomposite tailored for chemical adsorption applications. Employing a one-step synthesis approach, we successfully developed a Graphene Oxide-Activated Carbon (GOAC) composite that meets these criteria. Graphene oxide aggregates in water. We strategically introduced activated carbon (AC) through a facile synthesis route to overcome this issue. The GOAC composite was characterized using XRD, FESEM, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, BET, FTIR, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. In this study, maintaining the structural integrity of constituent materials is a crucial element that guarantees the efficacy of adsorption. The GOAC composite demonstrated exceptional thermal stability, amplifying its prospects for practical applications. In adsorption studies, the composite exhibited notable efficacy in removing the cationic organic dye methylene blue. This removal resulted in a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 272 mg/g, achieved in just 14 min. The observed adsorption behaviour aligned with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This study highlights the successful development of a versatile nanocomposite with promising attributes for environmental remediation. Combining graphene oxide and activated carbon addresses agglomeration challenges and imparts structural stability and high thermal resilience to the composite, making it a compelling candidate for cost-effective and efficient adsorption-driven applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized by electrochemical exfoliation. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry were used to characterize crystal structure, particle size, thickness and function groups of the nanosheets. The nanosheets were examined for adsorption of methyl orange, an anionic dye, in aqueous solution at different pHs and temperatures. The maximum adsorption capacity of methyl orange on graphene oxide nanosheets obtained from the Langmuir isotherm was 138.69 mg/g at pH 2.0, which is larger than that of other carbonaceous adsorbents. The large adsorption affinity of graphene oxide nanosheets to methyl orange might be due to the presence of hydrogen bonding and π–π interaction between methyl orange and graphene oxide nanosheets. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isotherm adsorption results were fitted with Langmuir isotherm model in a monolayer adsorption manner. The thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption reaction was a spontaneous physisorption process.

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets, as a novel nanoadsorbent, can be further modified to optimize the adsorption capability for various pollutants. To overcome the structural limits of graphene (aggregation) and graphene oxide (hydrophilic surface) in water, sulfonated graphene (GS) was prepared by diazotization reaction using sulfanilic acid. It was demonstrated that GS not only recovered a relatively complete sp(2)-hybridized plane with high affinity for aromatic pollutants but also had sulfonic acid groups and partial original oxygen-containing groups that powerfully attracted positively charged pollutants. The saturated adsorption capacities of GS were 400 mg/g for phenanthrene, 906 mg/g for methylene blue and 58 mg/g for Cd(2+), which were much higher than the corresponding values for reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide. GS as a graphene-based adsorbent exhibits fast adsorption kinetic rate and superior adsorption capacity toward various pollutants, which mainly thanks to the multiple adsorption sites in GS including the conjugate π region sites and the functional group sites. Moreover, the sulfonic acid groups endow GS with the good dispersibility and single or few nanosheets which guarantee the adsorption processes. It is great potential to expose the adsorption sites of graphene nanosheets for pollutants in water by regulating their microstructures, surface properties and water dispersion.

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) treatment of anionic dyeing wastewater has been characterized by low removal efficiency due to its electronegativity. However, further modification and enhancement of graphene oxide make it difficult to balance cost and efficiency. Herein, we report an economical, practical, and environmentally friendly composite aerogel of GONs and chitosan (CS) in anionic dye adsorption. The abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of GONs may form hydrogen bonds with dye molecules. Meanwhile, the amino-positive active sites on the chain segments of CS molecules may anchor anionic dyes. The adsorption capacities of composite aerogel for methyl orange (MO) and bromophenol blue (BPB) anionic dyes by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonds, and π-π conjugate interactions are 3.7 and 1.8 times than that of pure CS aerogel from the adsorption results, respectively. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of composite aerogel for MO and BPB are 179.21 and 236.42 mg g−1 at room temperature and in a neutral environment. Therefore, this simple and cost-effective graphene aerogel anionic dye adsorbent may be used for the protection of the water environment.

Abstract:A three-dimensional porous graphene oxide (PGO) material prepared by hydrothermal method was selected to adsorb methylene blue (MB), which demonstrates a high MB adsorption capacity, up to 1100 mg g−1 in alkaline solution at room temperature. The influences of different pore structures and different contents of oxygen-containing functional groups on MB adsorption behaviors were studied in detail, which indicated that the high MB adsorption capacity is mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of the large number of oxygen-containing functional groups and the interconnected 3D porous network. Moreover, based on the investigation on the adsorption kinetics and the effect of pH value on MB adsorption, we propose a two-step adsorption kinetics for PGO, which involved in two interactions between MB molecular and porous graphene oxide-based carbon: electrostatic force and π-π stacking. Besides, the calculation of the activation energies indicates that chemisorption dominates the adsorption for PGO in comparison with physisorption for three-dimensional porous graphene materials which has low adsorption capacity because of the removal of functional groups. The results are of great significance for the design and environmental applications of PGO as a promising adsorbent material for water purification.

Abstract:Graphene-based sponges doped with atomic nitrogen and boron were applied for the electrochemical degradation of persistent organic contaminants in one-pass, flow-through mode, and in a low-conductivity supporting electrolyte. The B-doped anode and N-doped cathode was capable of >90% contaminant removal at the geometric anodic current density of 173 A m−2. The electrochemical degradation of contaminants was achieved via the direct electron transfer, the anodically formed O3, and likely by the OH• radicals formed by the decomposition of H2O2 produced at the cathode. The identified transformation products of iopromide show that the anodic cleavage of all three C-I bonds at the aromatic ring was preferential over scissions at the alkyl side chains, suggesting a determining role of the π- π interactions with the graphene surface. In the presence of 20 mM sodium chloride (NaCl), the current efficiency for chlorine production was <0.04%, and there was no chlorate and perchlorate formation, demonstrating a very low electrocatalytic activity of the graphene-based sponge anode towards chloride. Graphene-based sponges were produced using a low-cost, bottom-up method that allows easy introduction of dopants and functionalization of the reduced graphene oxide coating, and thus tailoring of the material for the removal of specific contaminants.

Abstract:Adsorption is one important way applied to water decontamination, where carbon is commonly used as highly effective absorbent. Carbon of different morphologies and structures normally demonstrate distinct capabilities to adsorption-typed decontaminations. Graphene oxide is regarded as the oxidative derivative of graphene, maintaining its 2D morphology-featuring structure while location-dependently immobilized with a large amount of various oxygen-involving functional moieties on both sides. Free-standing graphene oxide tends to fully unfold in water and behave in macromolecular-like Brownian motion. Therefore, high-performance adsorption occurs during the process of interacting with large amount of sorbates, during which an unevenness of effective adsorptive site distribution turns out for targeted matter due to functional group-to-sorbate interaction mechanism differentiation as well as groups'inherent location specifications. Thus, oriented manipulation of surficial functional moieties and their site distribution is potentially a way to further enhance the adsorptive performances, and this could go even better if considering combining adsorption and an in-situ manipulation at the same time.

Abstract:The preparation of high performance, low cost and recyclable adsorbents is very important to cope with the increasingly devastating water pollution. As a typical three-dimensional porous carbon material, carbon foam (CF) is expected to be a highly efficient adsorbent to wipe out organic dyes from wastewater. However, the uneven size distribution, and lack of adsorption sites signified by insufficient foaming process limit its wider application in the environmental field. Here, CF/carbon nanotubes/graphene oxide (CF/CNTs/GO) composites (adsorbents) were prepared by press-assisted foaming and carbonization methods using mesophase precursors of coal tar pitch and CNTs followed by impregnation of GO nanosheets. The results highlighted that the addition of CNTs facilitated improvement in pore distribution, porosities, and mechanical properties (20 MPa). After treating with GO nanosheets, the adsorption performances of CF/CNTs/GO adsorbents substantially improved due to the increased active sites in the CF/CNTs and the adsorption rate and capacity of methylene blue (MB) reached 73.1% and 146 mg/g respectively. Further, adsorption isotherms (Langmuir and Freundlich), thermodynamics, quasi-first order and quasi-second order kinetics and intraparticle diffusion models were employed to investigate the adsorption mechanism. This work provides a low-cost fabrication technique for the high-performance CF/CNTs/GO adsorbent and is expected to provide reference for application in the treatment of contaminated water.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has been regarded as promising adsorbent in treating water pollution. However, the high dispersibility of GO makes the separation of adsorbent/pollutant composite from aqueous environment very difficult. In this study, GO was fabricated with chitosan (CS) for dye removal, where GO-CS composite was not dispersible in water and could be easily separated by filtration or low speed centrifugation. GO-CS was found to be good adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) with a huge adsorption capacity of 4.68 x 10(2) mg/g, ranking it among the most effective adsorbents of MB. The adsorption data of MB on GO-CS were well fitted to the Freundlich model, rather than the Langmuir model. When initial MB concentration was 100 mg/L, the MB solution could be decolorized to colorless by GO-CS. After the treatment, GO-CS/MB composite could be easily removed by filtration. The implications to the application of graphene based adsorbents in water treatment are extensively discussed.

Abstract:In this study, environmentally-friendly nanocomposite hydrogels were fabricated. These hydrogels consisted of semi-interpenetrating networks of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) molecules grafted to polyacrylic acid (PAA), as an eco-friendly and non-toxic polymer with numerous carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups, which were reinforced with different levels of graphene oxide particles (0.5, 1.5 or 3% wt). Field-emission electron scanning microscopy (FESEM) images indicated that the pore size of the nanocomposites decreased with increasing graphic oxide concentration. The presence of the graphic oxide increased the storage modulus and thermal stability of the nanocomposite hydrogels. The hydrogels had an adsorption capacity of 138 mg/g of a model cationic dye pollutant (methylene blue) after 250 min. Moreover, a reusability test showed that the adsorption capacity remained at around 90% after 9 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations suggested that the adsorption of methylene blue was mainly a result of π-π bonds, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions with graphene oxide. Our results indicated that the nanocomposite hydrogels fabricated in this study may be eco-friendly, stable, efficient, and reusable adsorbents for ionic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The application of graphene oxide in water treatment is facing a rigorous challenge of how to separate nanoadsorbents from aqueous solution using conventional methods after adsorption. Herein, a new type of easily separated composite was fabricated using cellulose acetate (CA) crosslinked with graphene oxide (CAGO) and a simple vacuum freeze-drying method. The CAGO composites were subject to SEM, FTIR, TGA, and BET characterizations. The adsorption performance of the adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) was evaluated through investigating the experimental parameters such as initial dye concentration, temperature, adsorbent dose, contact time, and solution pH. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to fit the equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue onto the CAGO-4 composite was 374.53 mg/g at 323 K. The kinetic data showed a good determination with pseudo-second-order equation. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process.

Abstract:A highly efficient adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) adsorption was developed by combination of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and graphene oxide (GO) via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized CMC/GO composite aerogel has a mesoporous structure with an average pore diameter of 30 nm and a high specific surface area of 800.85 m2·g−1. Moreover, the CMC/GO composite aerogel demonstrates a significant selectivity for the dye adsorption, especially for MB, where its adsorption capacity can reach 244.99 mg·g−1 with an excellent recyclability for more than nine times. Thus, the prepared CMC/GO composite aerogel would be an effective adsorbent for dyes adsorption, owing to the merits of high efficiency, reusability, and eco-friendliness.

Abstract:Abstract The remarkable characteristics of graphene make it a model candidate for boosting the effectiveness of nano-adsorbents with high potential owing to its large surface area, π–π interaction, and accessible functional groups that interact with an adsorbate. However, the stacking of graphene reduces its influence adsorption characteristics and also its practical application. On the other hand, the widespread use of aromatic compounds in the industry has aggravated the contamination of the water environment, and how to effectively remove them has become a research hotspot. Herein, we develop the functionalization of silica nanoparticles on graphene oxide nanosheet (FGS) by a facile, cheap, and efficient synthesis protocol for adsorption of Trypan Blue (TB) and Bisphenol A (BPA). It was demonstrated that chemical activation with KOH at high autoclaving temperature successfully transformed rice husk ash (RHA) into FGS. The graphene oxide layered interlamination was kept open by using SiO 2 to expose the interlayers' strong adsorption sites. XRD, EDX, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, HR-TEM, and BET surface area are used to investigate the chemical composition, structure, morphology, and textural nature of the as-produced FGS hybrid nanocomposite. The various oxygen-containing functional groups of the hybrid nanocomposites resulted in a significantly increased adsorption capacity, according to experimental findings. In addition, FGS2, the best composite, has a specific surface area of 1768 m 2 g −1 . Based on Langmuir isotherms, the maximal TB dye and BPA removal capacity attained after 30 min were 455 and 500 mg/g, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model, a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and an intraparticle diffusion model have all been used to provide mechanistic insights into the adsorption process. This suggests that BPA and TB adsorption on FGS2 is mostly chemically regulated monolayer adsorption. Due to its unique sp 2 -hybridized single-atom-layer structure, the exposed graphene oxide nanosheets' extremely hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonding, and strong—electron donor–acceptor interaction contributed to their improved adsorption of BPA and TB. According to adsorption thermodynamics, FGS2 adsorption of TB and BPA is a spontaneous exothermic reaction that is aided by lowering the temperature. For adsorption-based wastewater cleanup, the produced nanocomposites with a regulated amount of carbon and silica in the form of graphene oxide and silica can be used. These findings suggest that functionalized GO/SiO 2 hybrid nanocomposites could be a viable sorbent for the efficient and cost-effective removal of aromatic chemicals from wastewater.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-100(Fe) and graphene oxide (GO) composites were prepared by hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermal-gravimetric (TG) analysis, the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composites were used for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. The results indicated that MIL-100(Fe) and GO formed a sandwich-like structure, and the crystal structure of MIL-100(Fe) was reserved in the composites. The attachment of GO layers to the MIL-100(Fe) decreased the surface area from 1690 to 1602 m2/g, and pore volume from 0.996 to 0.770 cm3/g when 5% (w/w) GO was added, due to the coating of MIL-100(Fe) by GO sheets. The addition of 5% (w/w) GO increased the adsorption capacity for MB (from 1019 to 1231 mg/g) and MO (from 667 to 1189 mg/g). The composites showed a better thermal stability than MIL-100(Fe); the decomposition temperature increased from 280 to 350 °C. Effective disposal of methylene blue using green immobilized silver nanoparticles on graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide sheets through one-pot synthesis

Abstract:This study reveals the feasibility of exploring highly efficient, cost-effective, and stable green adsorbents for the treatment of contaminated water. Here silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were immobilized onto nanosheets of graphene oxide (GO) through in situ reduction process using green tea aqueous extract. GO reduction to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and AgNPs decoration on rGO also occurred simultaneously. The impacts of the extract concentration, contact time, and temperature on the synthesis process have been investigated. The synthesized nanocomposites were examined by XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, and TGA. The GO nanosheets were decorated by AgNPs with a crystalline structure and an average particle size of 25 ± 3 nm. The temperature and the extract concentration were considerably affecting the type of the resulting nanocomposites. The GO/Ag nanocomposites were formed at room temperature (27 °C) using different extract concentration (2–18% (v/v)), while the rGO/Ag nanocomposite was formed only at a higher temperature (95 °C) with higher extract concentration (18%). The methylene blue (MB) dye was picked as a water pollutant to explore the adsorption ability of the nanocomposites. The adsorption behavior of the GO/Ag nanocomposites was examined under diverse factors (MB concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time) to achieve optimization. The adsorption data concurs with Langmuir isotherm giving maximum adsorption up to 633 mg g<sup>−1</sup>. Adsorption kinetics demonstrate good pseudo-second-order compliance. Spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption was affirmed via thermodynamic parameters. The nanocomposites could be utilized as eco-friendly and reliable adsorbents in wastewater treatment, as a result of their exceptional productivity and reusing potential.

Abstract:This work addressed one step preparation method to form a novel nano material composite of graphene oxide nanosheet (GO) functionalized with low-cost tri-sodium citrate (C), using, teteraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a cross-linker. The prepared composite (GO–C) was characterized using various advanced techniques. Among these techniques, the TGA provided interesting information concerning the functionalization process. Within this process, the (–OH) groups that located at the GO-surface were consumed in the modification process which leads to increase the thermal stability of the resulted composite. Cationic organic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV), and inorganic copper (Cu 2+ ) and cobalt (Co 2+ ) pollutants were displayed as a model to assess their removal performance by the developed composite (GO–C) from aqueous solution, through batch technique. According to Langmuir isotherm the GO–C present an excellent adsorption capacity for MB (222.22 mg g −1 ), CV (270.27 mg g −1 ), Cu 2+ (163.4 mg g −1 ) and Co 2+ (145.35 mg g −1 ) which were more than the adsorption capacities found in literature. Additionally, the regenerated composite presents higher removal ability than the original composite.

Abstract:In this study, superlight adsorbent sponges (bulk density 0.016-0.049 g·cm-3) were developed based on graphene oxide (GO) cross-linked with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The interlayer spacing of the GO nanosheets was increased by the insertion of PVA, and good mechanical integrity was attained by the cross-linked structure. They showed excellent continuous flow adsorption capacity (CFAC) when methylene blue (MB) was used as a model contaminant; a water flux of 396 L·m-2·h-1 through a 2 cm thick adsorbent sponge was achieved at a hydraulic head of only 10 cm water, with an almost complete retention of MB. They corresponded to a water permeability of 4.0 × 105 L·m-2·h-1·MPa-1, which was several orders of magnitudes higher than GO-based membranes for similar applications reported in the literature. The GO nanosheets were completely immobilized in the sponge by cross-linking with PVA, and thus, there was no GO nanoparticle leaching or flushing out into the treated permeate water, which was another advantage over direct use of GO powders in water treatment. Because of the high water permeability and CFAC, the cross-linked GO/PVA sponges have a great potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Background Graphene aerogels as solid porous adsorbents are great candidates for CO 2 adsorption based on their tunable hierarchical pore structure and oxygenated groups on graphene oxide can control the self-assembly and pore structure of graphene aerogels. Methods Modified Hummer's method was used to synthesize graphene oxides by using various levels of H 2 SO 4 , KMnO 4, and H 2 O 2 and 3D graphene aerogels were synthesized via the hydrothermal and freeze-drying method. FTIR, RAMAN, XRD, FE-SEM, and BET analysis were used for characterizations. Significance findings The effect of graphite oxidation conditions on the hierarchical porous structure of graphene aerogel for CO 2 adsorption was investigated. The graphene aerogel with the high meso and micro surface areas and the highest S m /S T value (micro surface area/total micro and meso surface area) of 33 % and also, the adequate macropores was achieved using high dosage of H 2 SO 4 in the graphene oxidation process led to the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 1.72 mmol/g. increasing the H 2 O 2 dosages increased the macropores in the aerogel structure and improved the value of S m /S T leading to an increase in the CO 2 adsorption capacity. The high content of KMnO 4 led to low S m /S T value and fewer macropores and decreased the CO 2 adsorption capacity (1.04 mmol/g).
