Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a kind of controllable multi-spiral beam that can be generated using the modulated helico-conical phases with an axicon. The focal-field intensity distributions of the multi-spiral beams were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The relative distance between the two adjacent sub-beams of the multi-spiral beams was discussed based on the approximate mapping of the local spatial frequency. The result demonstrated that the relative distance between the two adjacent sub-beams was linearly dependent on the radial factor gradient Δα of the two sub-beams. When the radial factor gradient Δα is equal to a critical value (i.e., Δαc), the multi-spiral beam can be changed into an Archimedean spiral-shaped beam (the sub-beams of multi-spiral beams will be connected with each other). In addition, the dependence of the topological charge l on the critical radial factor gradient Δαc is also discussed. The result demonstrates that the critical radial factor gradient Δαc has a linear dependence on the topological charge l. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. The controllable multi-spiral beams are potentially applied in three-dimensional optical micro-manipulation and information transmission.

Abstract:Cylindrical vector beam is one of the polarized beams whose states of polarization are spatially various and cylindrical symmetric. Owing to their peculiar focusing property, cylindrical vector beam has attracted more and more attentions. In this paper, we propose a method to generate cylindrical vector beam with rotatable polarization in free space. Two spatially homogeneous polarized beams are modified properly into spatially varied polarized beam by the vortex phase plate respectively. Then two phase-coded beams are combined together to generate a cylindrical vector beam. In addition, the polarization directions of cylindrical beams can be rotated continuously to a desired direction. The polarization states of the cylindrical vector beam are calculated by Johns matrix. The focusing properties are simulated by MATLAB.

Abstract:Bessel beams have a wide range of applications in optical communications because their non-diffractive properties do not depend on the amplitude and phase distribution in the spatial frequency range. Recently, metasurfaces have been widely utilized as subwavelength materials for light manipulation, including the generation of Bessel beams. However, so far, no reports of metasurfaces generating Bessel beams with polarization rotation function have been published, which has potential applications for information encryption in optical communication. An all-dielectric metasurface based on the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase is proposed to realize the generation of a Bessel beam with polarization rotation function under the incident of linearly polarized (LP) light. Furthermore, we exhibit dual Bessel beams with orthogonal polarization states through the superimposition of two Bessel beam phases onto a metasurface, with different polarization rotation angles and phase gradients. Our final demonstration illustrates Bessel beam arrays with polarization rotation, and this design concept can be extended to more channels and higher-order Bessel beams. The proposed all-dielectric metasurfaces based on polarization rotation function provides a new option for the application of Bessel beams in integrated optical systems and multiplexing.

Abstract:Spiraling Bessel beams of arbitrary order are created by illuminating an apertured axicon and a hologram with a single-ringed Laguerre–Gaussian beam. The high-order beam rotates around the propagating axis with a hollow center and can be regarded as the hollow spiraling beam. Such beams have distinct advantages, which offer a direct method for micro-fabrication applications, especially for cold atom guiding, due to their inherent central hollow region and their non-diffracting feature.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a beam forming approach capable of synthesizing versatile, pre-specified beam shapes using concentric excitations satisfying multiple weighted sinc or Bessel function distribution. We show by both theoretical calculation and full wave simulation that by tuning different weights of a sinc or Bessel function distribution, not only radiation beams with pencil, flat-topped and bimodal shapes can be synthesized, but also the beam-width and the side lobe level can be independently adjusted. An example is provided to demonstrate how an isoflux beam aiming at a better coverage of the earth surface is synthesized, and how an optimized continuous distribution is properly discretized for a physical realization of a satellite aperture array antenna. The approach proposed in this paper can be applied to a wide range of applications that require performance optimization of concentric ring array antennas.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:In recent years, orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams and their generation methods have drawn increasing interest. Generating multiple OAMs in a three-dimensional space simply and efficiently is meaningful and challenging. Herein, we proposed an integrated multi-OAM generator based on the independent controlling phase division. Realized through the two-photon additive manufacturing, the device possesses a continuous surface with a diameter of 100 μm. Using the generator, arbitrary OAM modes were demonstrated, including the axial position, the number of topological charges, and the direction of rotation. The unique optical characteristics were mutually verified experimentally and through simulation. Vortex beams carrying multiple OAMs will provide more degrees of freedom to manipulate light for exciting applications such as optical communications, micromanipulation, and quantum optics.

Abstract:We propose a highly efficient phase modulation method for generating an elliptic optical vortex with an arbitrary controllable rotation angle, that can be recognized as a controllable degree of freedom. A transformation matrix and rotation matrix were used to realize the modulation of the light field. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the control capability of Bessel beam and higher-order Laguerre-Gauss vortex modes. The rotation angle beta, elliptic degree e and multiplexing elliptic optical vortices could be freely modulated by using the proposed method. This work is important for the progress of programmable optical tweezers, as well as for automated optical transport operations which are of interest in colloidal physics and biophysics. It can also be applied in high-dimensional and multiphoton quantum experiments.

Abstract:Light fields with extraordinary propagation behaviours such as nondiffracting and self-bending are useful in optical delivery for energy, information, and even objects. A kind of helical beams is constructed here based on the caustic method. With appropriate design, the main lobe of these helical beams can be both well-confined and almost nondiffracting while moving along a helix with its radius, period, the number of rotations and main lobes highly adjustable. In addition, the main lobe contains almost half of the optical power and the peak intensity fluctuates below 15% during propagation. These promising characteristics may enable a variety of potential applications based on these beams.

Abstract:Bessel beams, as one type of special light field, would significantly do benefit to several applications such as light-sheet microscopy, particle manipulation and free-space optical communications. In this paper, we investigate the generation of multi-dimensional tunable arbitrary shape beams with engineered axial profile based on the superposition of zero-order Bessel beams by designing the angular spectrum, providing a universal method to manipulate arbitrary shape beams in terms of longitudinal intensity, transverse wavevector distribution and transverse field shape. Through angular spectral analysis, we demonstrate the shape-invariant axial engineering of circle, ellipse, parabolic, and epicycloid-shaped beams, as well as shape-variant axial engineering such as self-acceleration, self-rotation, and self-mode conversion, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Our work provides a deep insight into the fundamental properties of arbitrary shape light with engineered axial profile and paves new way toward exploiting more dimensions for its future applications.

Abstract:We propose an approach for simultaneously shaping multiple three dimensional (3D) vector curve beams. The intensity distribution and polarization state variation of each 3D vector curve beam can be tuned along arbitrary prescribed trajectories. The scheme is based on the coaxial superposition of the orthogonally polarized 3D base vector curve beams through non-iterative holographic 3D beam shaping technique. In particular, the hybrid 3D vector curve beams array is also generated with identical depth range. The transversal position of each vector beam can be governed independently. Moreover, the multiplexing of 3D vector beams is realized with different depth ranges in the focal region along the beam propagation. The numerical results are identical to the experiments. This method will be benefit to the trapping and transportation of particles.
Multi-channel Generation of Vortex Beams with Controllable Polarization States and Orbital Angular Momentum

Abstract:Optical vortices with tunable polarization states and topological charges are widely investigated in various physical systems and practical devices for high-capacity optical communication. However, this kind of structured light beams is usually generated using several polarization and spatial phase devices, which decreases the configurability of optical systems. Here, we have designed a kind of polarized optical multi-vortices generator based on the Stokes-Mueller formalism and cross-phase modulation. In our scheme, multi-channel generation of polarized vortex beams can be realized through a single optical element and a single-input Gaussian beam. The polarization states and orbital angular momentum of the generated light beams are all-optically controllable. Furthermore, the proposed polarized optical multi-vortices generator has also been demonstrated experimentally through one-step holographic recording in an azobenzene liquid-crystalline film and the experimental results agree with theoretical analysis.
Arbitrary combinations of helical-conical optical beams in free space

Abstract:Helical-conical optical beams (HCOBs) have attracted considerable interest due to their peculiar optical features. Their characteristic helical light intensity distribution has exerted unprecedented advantages in many fields, but multiple combinations of HCOBs have not been reported due to the limitations of algorithms and light field modulation techniques. We propose and experimentally demonstrate arbitrary combinations of multiple HCOBs in free space to construct hybrid HCOB arrays. The similarity between the experimental results and the numerical simulation results is 94.22%. The initial orientation of the HCOBs is flexibly tuned by the rotation factor β, and the optical pen is used to combine the HCOBs. This approach allows multiple parameters in the array to be precisely tuned, including the type, number, and position of HCOBs, adding more design flexibility. The constructed HCOB arrays have a higher degree of modulation freedom and may find applications in fields where dynamic control is in high demand, including optical tweezers, biological cell sorting, and multiparticle manipulation.

Abstract:This letter proposes a new method for controlling the divergence angles of multi-mode orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beams. A geometric framework is established that allows for the same divergence angle across different OAM modes, which addresses a significant challenge in multi-mode systems. Proposed method combines one-dimensional linear array theory and the design of OAM beams with an equal divergence angle. By adjusting element phases, precise divergence control is achieved without altering the metasurface structure. The method's effectiveness is verified through theoretical synthesis, full-wave simulations, and experimental validation. This approach offers accurate control over a wide range of angles, demonstrating potential applications in communication systems.

Abstract:We present a highly efficient method of generating and shaping ellipse perfect vector beams (EPVBs) with a prescribed ellipse intensity profile and continuously variant linear polarization state. The scheme is based on the coaxial superposition of two orthogonally polarized ellipse laser beams of controllable phase vortex serving as the base vector components. The phase-only computer-generated hologram is specifically designed by means of a modified iteration algorithm involving a complex amplitude constraint, which is able to generate an EPVB with high diffraction efficiency in the vector optical field generator. We experimentally demonstrate that the efficiency of generating the EPVB has a notable improvement from 1.83% in the conventional complex amplitude modulation based technique to 11.1% in our method. We also discuss and demonstrate the simultaneous shaping of multiple EPVBs with independent tunable ellipticity and polarization vortex in both transversal (2D) and axial (3D) focusing structures, proving potentials in a variety of polarization-mediated applications such as trapping and transportation of particles in more complex geometric circumstances.

Abstract:Non-diffracting Bessel beams, including zero-order and high-order Bessel Beams which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), enable a variety of important applications in optical micromanipulation, sub-diffraction imaging, high speed photonics/quantum communication, etc. The commonly used ways to create Bessel beams, including an axicon or a digital hologram written to a spatial light modulator (SLM), have great challenges to operate at the nanoscale. Here we theoretically design and experimentally demonstrate one kind of planar Bessel beam generators based on metasurfaces with analytical structures perforated in ultra-thin metallic screens. Continuous phase modulation between 0 to 2π is realized with a single element. In addition, due to the dispersionless phase shift stemming from spin-orbit interaction, the proposed device can work in a wide wavelength range. The results may find applications in future optical communication, nanofabrication and super-resolution imaging, etc.

Abstract:Structured light with more controllable degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) is an exciting topic with versatile applications. In contrast to conventional vector vortex beams (VVBs) with two DoFs of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization, a hybrid ray-wave structure was recently proposed [Optica 7(7), 820-831 (2020)], which simultaneously manifests multiple DoFs such as ray trajectory, coherent state phase, trajectory combination, besides OAM and polarization. Here we further generalize this exotic structure as the astigmatic hybrid VVB by hatching a new DoF of astigmatic degree. Importantly, the transverse topology varies with propagation, e.g. a linearly distributed hybrid trajectory pattern can topologically evolve to a circularly polygonal star shape, where the number of singularity changes from zero to multiple in a single beam. The propagation-dependent evolution can be easily controlled by the astigmatic degree, including as a vector vortex state such that different astigmatic trajectories have different polarizations. We experimentally generate such beams from a simple laser with a special astigmatic conversion by combined spherical and cylindrical lenses, and the results agree well with our theoretical simulation. With our new structured light, the propagation-multiplexing multi-DoF patterns can be controlled in a single beam, which can largely extend related applications such as high-dimensional large-capacity optical communication, laser machining, and particle trapping.

Abstract:Bessel-like beams with controllable rotation of local linear polarization upon propagation are generated, which in fact achieve the evolution of polarization states along the equator of the Poincaré sphere during propagation. Based on the amplitude-phase joint modulation method, the rotation direction and rate of polarizations of the Bessel-like beam can be controlled easily by adjusting the radial indices and intensity ratio of two superposed beams. A rotation angle of $\sim$∼800 deg has been achieved after a propagation distance of 120 mm, corresponding to a rotation rate of $\sim$∼6.7 deg/mm, which is about three times higher than in previous works.
