Moral sensitivity of nursing students: a systematic review

Abstract:Moral sensitivity is an essential criterion for nurses' professional competence, and it is effective in professional performance and the development of communication between nurse and patient. According to several definitions of moral sensitivity in nursing texts, each of them has examined moral sensitivity from a different aspect, and there are still uncertainties in the field of moral sensitivity of nursing students. Therefore, to clarify the characteristics and dimensions of the concept of moral sensitivity of nursing students, we used the method of concept analysis.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

The main objective of this paper is to clarify and define the moral sensitivity of nursing students through the method of concept analysis. The authors focus on understanding the characteristics and dimensions of nursing students' moral sensitivity in order to better cultivate their professional ethical qualities.

The research background emphasizes various ethical challenges encountered in nursing practice, such as the application of technology in nursing interventions, increased treatment costs, and the growing number of patients. These challenges require nursing personnel to not only have high-quality professional skills but also possess corresponding ethical literacy. Considering that nursing students, as the main force of the future healthcare system, begin to interact with patients during their hospital internships, it is crucial to cultivate their moral sensitivity.

To achieve the research objective, the authors adopted Rodgers' concept analysis method and conducted a systematic review. They screened relevant literature from articles published between 1990 and 2020, ultimately identifying 38 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Through these studies, the authors summarized multiple attributes of nursing students' moral sensitivity, including the ability to intuitively perceive moral challenges, compassionate professional practice, awareness of responsibility and its moral consequences, honest and kind interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to critically think about moral and legal challenges.

Additionally, the paper discusses the antecedent conditions that influence nursing students' moral sensitivity, such as specialized ethical knowledge and practical experience in a professional education environment. It also points out the outcomes of enhanced moral sensitivity, including improved nursing quality and effective management of moral challenges.

In conclusion, this paper aims to clarify the conceptual framework of nursing students' moral sensitivity through an in-depth analysis of existing literature, thereby providing support for the development of nursing education theory and practice.
