Abstract:Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations of instantaneous nucleation followed by diffusion-controlled growth of metal nanoparticles on surfaces have shown that a regular distribution of nucleation sites on the surface leads to a reduction in particle size dispersion. However, for several applications, the distribution of active sites on the surface is irregular and random. We use BD simulations to investigate the influence of surface reaction rate on the development of size dispersion of interfacial nanostructures that form by irreversible deposition of noninteracting particles onto surfaces with randomly distributed nucleation sites. The macroscopic balance between the surface reaction rate and bulk diffusion is incorporated into the BD simulations by using a reaction probability that approaches unity in the case of instantaneous, diffusion-limited deposition. It is found that the size uniformity of the growing particles on the randomly distributed active sites can be improved by decreasing the reaction probability. The overlap of diffusion zones surrounding the growing particles, referred to as interparticle diffusional coupling, is responsible for the particle size dispersion in diffusion-controlled growth on randomly distributed sites. The simulation results, in qualitative agreement with experiments, show that reducing the reaction probability is an effective means to reduce the interparticle diffusion coupling, and thereby reduce the particle size dispersion. This could be accomplished by manipulating the process variables that influence the surface reaction rate and/or the bulk diffusivity of the particles.

Abstract:The London dispersion interactions between systems undergoing bond breaking, twisting, or compression are not well studied due to the scarcity and the high computational cost of methods being able to describe both the dynamic correlation and the multireference character of the system. Recently developed methods based on the Generalized Valence Bond wave function, such as EERPA-GVB and SAPT(GVB) (SAPT = symmetry-adapted perturbation theory), allow one to accurately compute and analyze noncovalent interactions between multireference systems. Here, we augment this analysis by introducing a local indicator for dispersion interactions inspired by Mata and Wuttke's Dispersion Interaction Density [ J. Comput. Chem. 2017, 38, 15-23] applied on top of an EERPA-GVB computation. Using a few model systems, we show what insights into the nature and evolution of the dispersion interaction during bond breaking and twisting such an approach is able to offer. The new indicator can be used at a minimal cost additional to an EERPA-GVB computation and can be complemented by an energy decomposition employing the SAPT(GVB) method. We explain the physics behind the initial increase, followed by a decrease in the interaction of linear molecules upon bond stretching. Namely, the elongation of covalent bonds leads to the enhancement of attractive dispersion interactions. For even larger bond lengths, this effect is canceled by the increase of the repulsive exchange forces resulting in a suppression of the interaction and finally leading to repulsion between monomers.

Abstract:Aromatic interactions play a key role in many chemical and biological systems. However, even if very simple models are chosen, the systems of interest are often too large to be handled with standard wave function theory (WFT). Although density functional theory (DFT) can easily treat systems of more than 200 atoms, standard semilocal (hybrid) density functional approximations fail to describe the London dispersion energy, a factor that is essential for accurate predictions of inter- and intramolecular noncovalent interactions. Therefore dispersion-corrected DFT provides a unique tool for the investigation and analysis of a wide range of complex aromatic systems. In this Account, we start with an analysis of the noncovalent interactions in simple model dimers of hexafluorobenzene (HFB) and benzene, with a focus on electrostatic and dispersion interactions. The minima for the parallel-displaced dimers of HFB/HFB and HFB/benzene can only be explained when taking into account all contributions to the interaction energy and not by electrostatics alone. By comparison of saturated and aromatic model complexes, we show that increased dispersion coefficients for sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms play a major role in aromatic stacking. Modern dispersion-corrected DFT yields accurate results (about 5-10% error for the dimerization energy) for the relatively large porphyrin and coronene dimers, systems for which WFT can provide accurate reference data only with huge computational effort. In this example, it is also demonstrated that new nonlocal, density-dependent dispersion corrections and atom pairwise schemes mutually agree with each other. The dispersion energy is also important for the complex inter- and intramolecular interactions that arise in the molecular crystals of aromatic molecules. In studies of hexahelicene, dispersion-corrected DFT yields "the right answer for the right reason". By comparison, standard DFT calculations reproduce intramolecular distances quite accurately in single-molecule calculations while inter- and intramolecular distances become too large when dispersion-uncorrected solid-state calculations are carried out. Dispersion-corrected DFT can fix this problem, and these results are in excellent agreement with experimental structure and energetic (sublimation) data. Uncorrected treatments do not even yield a bound crystal state. Finally, we present calculations for the formation of a cationic, quadruply charged dimer of a porphyrin derivative, a case where dispersion is required in order to overcome strong electrostatic repulsion. A combination of dispersion-corrected DFT with an adequate continuum solvation model can accurately reproduce experimental free association enthalpies in solution. As in the previous examples, consideration of the electrostatic interactions alone does not provide a qualitatively or quantitatively correct picture of the interactions of this complex.

Abstract:As an essential van der Waals interaction, dispersion interaction is an important weak attractive interaction. However, the influence of the weak attractive intereactions has only recently been elucidated in transition metal catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenations by the Wanbin Zhang group. Our IGM/EDA analysis proves Zhang's finding that attractive interactions play an important role in asymmetric hydrogenation, which provides new strategies for the sophisticated design of chiral transition metal catalysts. We further revealed that the dispersion interaction is the major weak attractive interaction that activates the asymmetric hydrogenations by favorable interactions of substrate and metal catalyst.

Abstract:Solvent competition for London dispersion attenuates its energetic significance in molecular recognition processes. By varying both the stacked contact area and the solvent, here we experimentally deconvolute solvent attenuation using molecular balances. Experimental stacking energies (phenyl to pyrene) correlated strongly with calculations only when dispersion was considered. Such calculations favoured stacking by up to −27 kJ mol−1 in the gas phase, but it was weakly disfavoured in our solution-phase experiments (+0.5 to +4.6 kJ mol−1). Nonetheless, the propensity for stacking increased with contact area and in solvents with lower bulk polarisabilities that compete less for dispersion. Experimental stacking energies ranged from −0.02 kJ mol−1 Å−2 in CS2, to −0.05 kJ mol−1 Å−2 in CD2Cl2, but were dwarfed by the calculated gas-phase energy of −0.6 kJ mol−1 Å−2. The results underscore the challenge facing the exploitation of dispersion in solution. Solvent competition strongly but imperfectly cancels dispersion at molecular recognition interfaces, making the energetic benefits difficult to realise.

Abstract:The dispersion-core-potential corrected B3LYP-DCP method (Torres and DiLabio J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2012, 3, 1738) is for the first time thoroughly assessed and compared with the B3LYP-NL (Hujo and Grimme J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2011, 7, 3866) and B3LYP-D3 (Grimme et al. J. Comput. Chem. 2011, 32, 1456) methods for a broad range of chemical problems that particularly shed light on intramolecular London-dispersion effects in conformers and general thermochemistry. The analysis is based on a compilation of 473 reference cases, the majority of which are taken from the GMTKN30 database (Goerigk and Grimme J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2010, 6, 107; 2011, 7, 291). The results confirm previous findings that B3LYP-DCP indeed predicts very good binding energies for noncovalently bound complexes, particularly with small basis sets. However, problems are identified for the description of intramolecular effects in some conformers and chemical reactions, for which B3LYP-DCP sometimes gives results similar or worse than uncorrected B3LYP. Surprisingly large errors for total atomization energies reveal an unwanted influence of the DCPs on the short-range electronic structure of the investigated systems. However, a recently modified carbon potential for B3LYP-DCP (DiLabio et al. Theor. Chem. Acc. 2013, 132, 1389) was additionally tested that seems to solve most of those problems and provides improved results. An overall comparison between all tested methods shows that B3LYP-NL is the most robust and accurate approach, closely followed by B3LYP-D3. This is also true when small basis sets of double-ζ quality are applied for which those methods have not been parametrized. However, binding energies of noncovalently bound complexes can be more strongly influenced by basis-set superposition-error effects than for B3LYP-DCP. Finally, it is noted that the DFT-D3 and DFT-NL schemes are readily applicable to a large range of chemical elements and they are therefore particularly recommended for more general applications.

Abstract:The interplay of diffusion with phenomena like stochastic adsorption–desorption, absorption, and reaction–diffusion is essential for life and manifests in diverse natural contexts. Many factors must be considered, including geometry, dimensionality, and the interplay of diffusion across bulk and surfaces. To address this complexity, we investigate the diffusion process in heterogeneous media, focusing on non-Markovian diffusion. This process is limited by a surface interaction with the bulk, described by a specific boundary condition relevant to systems such as living cells and biomaterials. The surface can adsorb and desorb particles, and the adsorbed particles may undergo lateral diffusion before returning to the bulk. Different behaviors of the system are identified through analytical and numerical approaches.

Abstract:Proper representation of chemical kinetics is vital to understanding, modeling, and optimizing many important chemical processes. In liquid and surface phases, where diffusion is slow, the rate at which the reactants diffuse together limits the overall rate of many elementary reactions. Commonly, the textbook Smoluchowski theory is utilized to estimate effective rate coefficients in the liquid phase. On surfaces, modelers commonly resort to much more complex and expensive Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations. Here we extend the Smoluchowski model to allow the diffusing species to undergo chemical reactions, and derive analytical formulae for the diffusion limited rate coefficients for 3D, 2D and 2D/3D interface cases. With these equations we are able to demonstrate that when species react faster than they diffuse they can react orders of magnitude faster than predicted by Smoluchowski theory, through what we term “the reactive transport effect.” We validate the derived steady state equations against particle Monte Carlo (PMC) simulations, KMC simulations and non-steady state solutions. Furthermore, using PMC and KMC simulations, we propose corrections that agree with all limits and the computed data for the 2D and 2D/3D interface steady state equations, accounting for unique limitations in the associated derived equations. Additionally, we derive equations to handle couplings between diffusion limited rate coefficients in reaction networks. We believe these equations should make it possible to run much more accurate mean-field simulations of liquids, surfaces, and liquid-surface interfaces accounting for diffusion limitations and the reactive transport effect.

Abstract:DFT calculations of reaction mechanisms in solution have always been a hot topic, especially for transition-metalcatalyzed reactions, in which the traditional DFT-D3 method has been extensively employed. The overestimation of the dispersion from the traditional DFT-D3 method leads to the quite low activation free-energy barrier, so it does worth to find a proper way to deal with the dispersion for solution systems. The solvent-solute dispersion is also important for solution systems, and thus it should be calculated together with the solute dispersion. The newly generated solute-solute dispersion energy should be shared equally with the newly formed cavity between two interacting species, therefore, only half of solute-solute and solvent-solute dispersion terms belong to the solute molecule. The detailed treatment of dispersion correction for solution systems has been fully addressed, and such method has been confirmed with the examples of ligand exchange reactions and catalytic reactions.

Abstract:London dispersion is a weak, attractive, intermolecular force that occurs due to interactions between instantaneous dipole moments. While individual dispersion contributions are small, they are the dominating attractive force between nonpolar species and determine many properties of interest. Standard semi-local and hybrid methods in density-functional theory do not account for dispersion contributions, so a correction such as the exchange-hole dipole moment (XDM) or many-body dispersion (MBD) models must be added. Recent literature has discussed the importance of many-body effects on dispersion, and attention has turned to which methods accurately capture them. By studying systems of interacting quantum harmonic oscillators from first principles, we directly compare computed dispersion coefficients and energies from XDM and MBD and also study the influence of changing oscillator frequency. Additionally, the 3-body energy contributions for both XDM, via the Axilrod-Teller-Muto term, and MBD, via a random-phase approximation formalism, are calculated and compared. Connections are made to interactions between noble gas atoms as well as to the methane and benzene dimers and to two layered materials, graphite and MoS2. While XDM and MBD give similar results for large separations, some variants of MBD are found to be susceptible to a polarization catastrophe at short range, and the MBD energy calculation is seen to fail in some chemical systems. Additionally, the self-consistent screening formalism used in MBD is shown to be surprisingly sensitive to the choice of input polarizabilities.
Augmented Pairwise Additive Interaction Model for Lateral Adsorbate Interactions: the NO-CO Reaction System on Rh(100) and Rh(111)

Abstract:Lateral adsorbate interactions have been acknowledged to play an important role in heterogeneous catalytic kinetics. To quantify such energies efficiently and accurately, a lattice-gas-based augmented pairwise additive interaction model was proposed. The model Hamiltonian is defined as the summation over all isolated binding energies and all pairwise interactions, with the pairwise interaction used for each adsorbate pair consisting of the corresponding isolated pairwise interaction and some needed modification terms if the surroundings meet specific conditions. The parameters used in this augmented pairwise additive interaction model for the NO-CO reaction system on Rh(100) and Rh(111) were collected based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reliability of the model was examined by the reproduction of some DFT-based predictions and experimental observations. Results suggest that the lateral interactions on Rh(100) are relatively short range and greatly susceptible to the lateral displacements of adsorbates, whereas on Rh(111), the lateral interactions are relatively long range and the lateral displacements of adsorbates are more limited. In addition, the Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relations for adsorbate diffusion were constructed and a modification strategy was proposed for certain diffusion processes. This work opens up the possibility of accurate microkinetic modeling for this reaction system with a faithful account of lateral interactions and motivates the extensions to other complex surface systems.

Abstract:Surface reactions such as the adsorption and desorption at boundaries are very common for solute dispersion in many applications of chemistry, biology, hydraulics, etc. To study how reversible adsorption affects the transient dispersion, Zhang, Hesse & Wang (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 828, 2017, pp. 733–752) have investigated the temporal evolution of moments using the Laplace transform method. Owing to difficulties introduced by the adsorption–desorption boundary condition, great challenges arise from the inverse Laplace transform: dealing with the singularities by the residue theorem can tremendously increase complexities. This work provides a much simpler analytical method to derive solutions in a more compact form that is valid for the entire range of the reactive transport process. Such a progress demonstrates that the classic framework of separation of variables can be extended and applied to this more general adsorption–desorption condition, based on which higher-order statistics including skewness and kurtosis can be explicitly explored in practice. Also extended is Gill's generalised dispersion model for solute concentration distributions, which can now address the entire transient dispersion characteristics, instead of just applied for the long-time asymptotic reactive process as done previously. Regarding the most classic Taylor dispersion problem, we investigate the influence of the reversible adsorption–desorption on the solute cloud in a tube flow. Not only the transient dispersion characteristics of transverse-average concentration distribution but also those of the bulk, surface and total-average distributions are discussed. We further investigate the influence of initial conditions on the non-uniformity of the transient dispersion over the cross-section.

Abstract:We introduce a system-independent method to derive effective atomic C6 coefficients and polarizabilities in molecules and materials purely from charge population analysis. This enables the use of dispersion-correction schemes in electronic structure calculations without recourse to electron-density partitioning schemes and expands their applicability to semi-empirical methods and tight-binding Hamiltonians. We show that the accuracy of our method is en par with established electron-density partitioning based approaches in describing intermolecular C6 coefficients as well as dispersion energies of weakly bound molecular dimers, organic crystals, and supramolecular complexes. We showcase the utility of our approach by incorporation of the recently developed many-body dispersion method [Tkatchenko et al., Phys. Rev.
