Abstract:Altermagnetism, a new magnetic phase, has been theoretically proposed and experimentally verified to be distinct from ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. Although altermagnets have been found to possess many exotic physical properties, the limited availability of known altermagnetic materials hinders the study of such properties. Hence, discovering more types of altermagnetic materials with different properties is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of altermagnetism and thus facilitating new applications in the next generation information technologies, e.g., storage devices and high-sensitivity sensors. Since each altermagnetic material has a unique crystal structure, we propose an automated discovery approach empowered by an AI search engine that employs a pre-trained graph neural network to learn the intrinsic features of the material crystal structure, followed by fine-tuning a classifier with limited positive samples to predict the altermagnetism probability of a given material candidate. Finally, we successfully discovered 50 new altermagnetic materials that cover metals, semiconductors, and insulators confirmed by the first-principles electronic structure calculations. The wide range of electronic structural characteristics reveals that various novel physical properties manifest in these newly discovered altermagnetic materials, e.g., anomalous Hall effect, anomalous Kerr effect, and topological property. Noteworthy, we discovered 4 $i$-wave altermagnetic materials for the first time. Overall, the AI search engine performs much better than human experts and suggests a set of new altermagnetic materials with unique properties, outlining its potential for accelerated discovery of the materials with targeted properties.

Abstract:Recent developments have introduced a groundbreaking form of collinear magnetism known as "altermagnetism". This emerging magnetic phase is characterized by robust time-reversal symmetry breaking, antiparallel magnetic order, and alternating spin-splitting band structures, yet it exhibits vanishing net magnetization constrained by symmetry. Altermagnetism uniquely integrates traits previously considered mutually exclusive to conventional collinear ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, thereby facilitating phenomena and functionalities previously not achievable within these traditional categories of magnetism. Initially proposed theoretically, the existence of the altermagnetic phase has since been corroborated by a range of experimental studies, which have confirmed its unique properties and potential for applications. This review explores the rapidly expanding research on altermagnets, emphasizing the novel physical phenomena they manifest, methodologies for inducing altermagnetism, and promising altermagnetic materials. The goal of this review is to furnish readers with a comprehensive overview of altermagnetism and to inspire further innovative studies on altermagnetic materials which could potentially revolutionize applications in technology and materials science.

Abstract:Recently, a new magnetic phase, termed altermagnetism, has caught the attention of the magnetism and spintronics community. This newly discovered magnetic phenomenon differs from traditional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetic. It generally lacks net magnetization and is characterized by unusual non-relativistic spin-splitting and broken time-reversal symmetry. This leads to novel transport properties such as the anomalous Hall effect, the crystal Nernst effect, and spin-dependent phenomena that cannot be fully explained by traditional magnetic theories. Spin-dependent phenomena such as spin currents, spin-splitter torques, and high-frequency dynamics emerge as key characteristics in altermagnets. This paper reviews the main aspects pertaining to altermagnets by providing an overview of theoretical investigations and experimental realizations. We discuss the most recent developments in altermagnetism, its comparison to other magnetic orders, and future prospects for exploiting its unique properties in next-generation devices.

Abstract:Beyond conventional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, altermagnetism is a recently discovered unconventional magnetic phase characterized by time-reversal symmetry breaking and spin-split band structures in materials with zero net magnetization. This distinct magnetic phase not only enriches the understanding of fundamental physical concepts but also has profound impacts on condense-matter physics research and practical device applications. Spin-polarized band structures have been recently observed in semiconductors MnTe and MnTe2 with vanishing net magnetization, confirming the existence of this unconventional magnetic order. Metallic altermagnets have unique advantages for exploring novel physical phenomena related to low-energy quasiparticle excitations and for applications in spintronics as electrical conductivity in metals allows the direct manipulation of spin current through electric field. Here, through comprehensive characterization and analysis of the magnetic and electronic structures of KV2Se2O, we have unambiguously demonstrated a metallic room-temperature altermaget with d-wave spin-momentum locking. The highly anisotropic spin-polarized Fermi surfaces and the spin-density-wave order emerging in the altermagnetic phase make it an extraordinary platform for designing high-performance spintronic devices and studying many-body effects coupled with the unconventional magnetism.

Abstract:Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a broad spectrum of fundamental research and practical device applications. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal ($\cal{T}$) symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated by an internal magnetization. However, the presence of a net-magnetization also imposes severe limitations on compatibility with other prominent phases ranging from superconductors to topological insulators, as well as on spintronic device scalability. Recently, altermagnetism has been proposed as a solution to this restriction, since it shares the enabling $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking characteristic of ferromagnetism, combined with the antiferromagnetic-like vanishing net-magnetization. To date, altermagnetic ordering has been inferred from spatially averaged probes. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale imaging and control of altermagnetic ordering ranging from nanoscale vortices to domain walls to microscale single-domain states in MnTe. We combine the $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking sensitivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with magnetic linear dichroism and photoemission electron microscopy, to achieve detailed imaging of the local altermagnetic ordering vector. A rich variety of spin configurations can be imposed using microstructure patterning or thermal cycling in magnetic fields. The demonstrated detection and control of altermagnetism paves the way for future research ranging from ultra-scalable digital and neuromorphic spintronic devices, to the interplay of altermagnetism with non-dissipative superconducting or topological phases.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric coupling is crucial for uncovering fundamental phenomena and advancing technologies in high-density data storage and energy-efficient devices. The emergence of altermagnets, which unify the advantages of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, offers unprecedented opportunities for magnetoelectric coupling. However, electrically tuning altermagnets remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we demonstrate how this challenge can be overcome by using antiferroelectricity and ferroelectricity to modulate the spin splitting in altermagnets, employing a universal, symmetry-based design principle. We introduce an unexplored class of multiferroics: antiferroelectric altermagnets (AFEAM), where antiferroelectricity and altermagnetism coexist in a single material. From first-principles calculations, we validate the feasibility of AFEAM in well-established van der Waals metal thio(seleno)phosphates and perovskite oxides. We reveal the design of AFEAM ranging from two-dimensional monolayers to three-dimensional bulk structures. Remarkably, even a weak electric field can effectively toggle spin polarization in the AFEAM by switching between antiferroelectric and ferroelectric states. Our findings not only enrich the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling but also pave the way for electrically controlled spintronic and multiferroic devices.

Altermagnetism: A Chemical Perspective

Abstract:Altermagnets have been recently introduced as a classification of collinear, spin compensated magnetic materials that host net-zero magnetization, yet display some electronic behaviors typically associated with non-compensated magnetic materials like ferromagnets. The emergence of such properties are a consequence of spin-split bands that arise under specific symmetry conditions in the limit of zero spin–orbit coupling. In this Perspective, we summarize the fundamental criteria for realizing an altermagnetic phase and present a qualitative electronic band structure derivation and symmetry analysis through chemical principles. We then discuss the properties that make altermagnets distinctive candidates for charge-to-spin conversion elements in spintronic devices, and provide a brief review of some altermagnetic candidate materials. Finally, we discuss future directions for altermagnetism and highlight opportunities for chemists to advance this emerging field.

Abstract:Altermagnetism is introduced as a category of magnetic states with vanishing net magnetic moment, and consists of collinear alternating (i.e., antiferromagnetic-like) spins and alternating variations of local structures around spins in such a way that the symmetry allows ferromagnetic behaviors such as anomalous Hall effect and magneto-optical Kerr effects. Altermagnets exhibiting ferromagnetic behaviors without any external perturbations (called type-I) turn out to belong to the ferromagnetic point group, and represent a form of weak ferromagnetic states. Other altermagnets (called type-II and type-III) can have ferromagnetic behaviors only with external perturbations, which conserve parity-time reversal (PT) symmetry. All types of altermagnets themselves have broken PT symmetry. The concept of altermagnetism can be extended to accommodate multiple spin and local-structure variations (thus, include non-collinear spins), and this extended form of altermagnetism offers an intriguing opportunity to leverage complementary advantages of both ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, and thus holds great promise for, for example, various spintronic applications.

Abstract:Altermagnetism, recently spotlighted in condensed matter physics, presents captivating physical properties and holds promise for spintronics applications. This study delves into the theoretical description and categorization of two-dimensional altermagnetism using spin group theory. Employing spin-group formalism, we establish seven distinct spin layer groups, extending beyond the conventional five spin Laue groups, to describe two-dimensional altermagnetism. Utilizing these findings, we classify previously reported two-dimensional altermagnets and identify novel materials exhibiting altermagnetism. Specifically, monolayer MnTeMoO$_6$ and VP$_2$H$_8$(NO$_4$)$_2$ are predicted to be two-dimensional altermagnets. Furthermore, we scrutinize their spin-momentum locking characteristics through symmetry analysis and density functional theory calculations, substantiating their altermagnetic properties.

Ruddlesden-Popper and perovskite phases as a material platform for altermagnetism

Abstract:The subclass of collinear antiferromagnets where spin Kramers degeneracy is broken -- so that they can display ferromagnetic-like properties -- stimulates a new perspective in magnetism. However, the material base for these so-called altermagnets is still relatively limited. We show that Ruddlesden-Popper and perovskite phases generically host altermagnetic materials. In particular, we analyze prototypical nickel-based systems via first-principles calculations and identify additional materials from their crystal structure and magnetic orders. These materials span both insulating/semiconducting and metallic conduction types and the computed values of the nonrelativistic spin splittings reach 250~meV. Our analysis also indicates some formal inconsistencies that may appear within the traditional classification of magnetically ordered materials, which can easily be resolved from the altermagnetic perspective. In addition, we indicate the possibility of having altermagnetic behavior in systems beyond collinear antiferromagnets with perfectly compensated magnetization.

Abstract:Altermagnetism has emerged as a third type of collinear magnetism. In contrast to standard ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, altermagnets exhibit extra even-parity wave spin order parameters resulting in a spin splitting of electronic bands in momentum space. In real space, sublattices of opposite spin polarization are anisotropic and related by rotational symmetry. In the hitherto identified altermagnetic candidate materials, the anisotropies arise from the local crystallographic symmetry. Here, we show that altermagnetism can also form as an interaction-induced electronic instability in a lattice without the crystallographic sublattice anisotropy. We provide a microscopic example of a two-orbital model showing that the coexistence of staggered antiferromagnetic and orbital order can realize robust altermagnetism. Abstract:Based on the form-invariant of Maxwell's equations under coordinate transformations, we extend the theory of transformation optics to transformation magneto-statics, which can design magnets through coordinate transformations. Some novel DC magnetic field illusions created by magnets (e.g. shirking magnets, cancelling magnets and overlapping magnets) are designed and verified by numerical simulations. Our research will open a new door to designing magnets and controlling DC magnetic fields.

Advancing magnetic material discovery through machine learning: Unveiling new manganese-based materials

Abstract:Magnetic materials are used in a variety of applications, such as electric generators, speakers, hard drives, MRI machines, etc. Discovery of new magnetic materials with desirable properties is essential for advancement in these applications. In this research article, we describe the development and validation of a machine-learning model to discover new manganese-based stable magnetic materials. The machine learning model is trained on the input data from the Materials Project database to predict the magnetization and formation energy of the materials. New hypothetical structures are made using the substitution method, and the properties are predicted using the machine learning model to select the materials with desired properties. Harnessing the power of machine learning allows us to intelligently narrow down the vast pool of potential candidates. By doing so, we deftly reduce the number of materials that warrant in-depth examination using density functional theory, rendering the task more manageable and efficient. The selected materials, seemingly promising with their magnetic potential, undergo a meticulous validation process using the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package, grounded in density functional theory. Our results underscore the paramount significance of input data in the efficacy of the machine learning model. Particularly in the realm of magnetic materials, the proper initialization of atomic magnetic spins holds the key to converging upon the true magnetic state of each material.

Ferroelectric switchable altermagnetism

Abstract:We propose a novel ferroelectric switchable altermagnetism effect, the reversal of ferroelectric polarization is coupled to the switching of altermagnetic spin splitting. We demonstrate the design principles for the ferroelectric altermagnets and the additional symmetry constraints necessary for switching the altermagnetic spin splitting through flipping the electric polarization based on the state-of-the-art spin-group symmetry techniques. 22 ferroelectric altermagnets are found by screening through the 2001 experimental reported magnetic structures in the MAGNDATA database and 2 of them are identified as ferroelectric switchable altermagnets. Using the hybrid improper ferroelectric material [C(NH2)3]Cr(HCOO)3 as an example, we show how the altermagnetic spin splitting is tightly coupled to the ferroelectric polarization, providing an ideal platform for designing electric-field-controllable multiferroic devices. Finally, we find that such manipulation of altermagnetism can be detected by monitoring the physical quantities that are related to the non-vanishing Berry curvature dipole, such as the linearly polarized photogalvanic spin current.
