Abstract:Begonia tanauanensis is a newly described endemic species in B. sect. Baryandra from Tanauan City, Batangas, southern Luzon, Philippines. Morphological data shows this species resembles B. chingipengii, a species from eastern Luzon as both species have light pink flowers, fleshy green lamina, and boat-shaped bracts. However, B. tanauanensis does not have the prominent white midrib and veins in the adaxial leaf surface, ciliate hairs on leaf margin, strongly keeled stipules and tomentose hairs on the abaxial leaf surface and petioles of B. chingipengii. The plants were observed to have a restricted and severely fragmented distribution. Unfortunately, these observed populations are also affected by human activities and threat of volcanic activity of the nearby Taal Volcano. Because of these threats, we provisionally assess the species as “Critically Endangered” (CR) following the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Begonia pseudoedulis, a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is here described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. edulis H.Lév. and B. dielsiana E.Pritz. ex Diels but differs easily by its hairy petioles and inflorescences, and red hispidulous flower tepals, ovary and capsules. The molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS supported that the new species was a monophyletic lineage, separating from both B. dielsiana and B. edulis. Due to its isolated distribution with several small populations, which are possibly disturbed by human activities, the species is considered as “Near Threatened” (NT) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Begonia scorpiuroloba sp. nov., a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it is mostly similar to B. pedatifida, but differs clearly by its narrower lobes, denser hairs on leaf surface, obtuse angle of leaf base, subequal tepals of female flowers and late flowering. This new species is endemic to Guangxi and is assigned to Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Two new species of Bulbophyllum, B. barcelonae and B. pelseri are described here from the Pantabangan‐Carranglan Watershed Forest Reserve, Luzon Island, Philippines. Bulbophyllum barcelonae resembles B. charisae, but differs by having smaller vegetative parts, ovate petals with a rounded apex, and a labellum with two ridges that are strongly angled outwards the adaxial surface, rounded proximal crests, and a canaliculate abaxial surface. Bulbophyllum pelseri resembles B. aureobrunneum but differs by having caducous sheath covering the pseudobulbs, punctulate leaf surface, shorter leaves, absence of transverse callus in median portion of labellum, median portion with short, rounded ridge, rounded apex, and triangular stelidia. These discoveries increase to 207, the known species of Bulbophyllum in the Philippines. An in Philipino can be found in the Supporting information.

Abstract:Based on field surveys and a review of literature and herbarium specimens, three new Begonia in section Platycentrum from South China are confirmed and reported with morphological descriptions and illustrations, namely Begonia liangguangensis D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou, B. shaoqingii D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou, and B. qinzhouensis D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou. These three new species are morphologically compared with their allied species. Their conservation statuses are provisionally assessed as Endangered, Endangered, and Critically Endangered, respectively, according to Guidelines for Using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:In documenting the flora of Mt. Malinao, Albay Province, Bicol region, Philippines an unknown Begonia from section Petermannia was discovered in the higher altitudes. Further study of relevant specimens and protologue identified it as Begonia jagori, a species endemic to the Philippines. Begonia jagori was known from a single collection in 1861 and since then, it has not been recollected or redocumented again. The collection locality was listed broadly as Luzon, and the protologue lacked some details. Using the materials from Mt. Malinao, the plant was redescribed and lectotypified. A note comparing its affinity to B. cumingiana is provided.

Abstract:We describe Argostemma mirae (Rubiaceae) a new species from Mt. Tingtingan, Badong, Tago, Surigao del Sur, Mindanao Island, Philippines. It grows on a shady mossy limestone forest on a lower elevation. A. mirae resembles A. solaniflorum in having branching and pubescent stems, oblanceolate leaves, pubescent petioles, terminal to axillary inflorescence, and white corollas but differs in having shorter stems, smaller leaf blades, 4 calyx lobes and 4 corollas. Based on IUCN criteria we proposed data deficient (DD) since there is only one population currently known.

Abstract:A new mottled-leaved species of Pinanga, P. curioi, is described from Panay Island, Philippines. This species exhibits an admixture of morphological traits of the Maculata group, but can be circumscribed with the following combination of characters: abaxially subglaucescent subfalcate-sigmoid middle leaflets with an inconspicuously narrowed base and non-pendulous shallow apical incisions, 3–5 greenish to orangish yellow rachillae, each bearing large obovoid-ellipsoid fruits which are only distally or partially spirally-arranged, and an elongate embryo. Relevant morphological and ecological notes and an updated key for the Maculata group are also included. P. curioi is endemic to Panay Island and exhibits the least mottling in the group when fully matured. It is hereby assessed as Endangered following the IUCN guidelines.

Abstract:Repeated expeditions conducted in Arunachal Pradesh resulted in the discovery of a unique Begonia, Begonia bijantiae D.Borah, Taram & M.Hughes, belonging to Begonia sect. Diploclinium. This species is described here based on collections made in Hunli, Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, a poorly known species, Begonia ovatifolia is illustrated with first‐ever published photographs, accompanied by an expanded description based on a collection from West Kameng district of the state.

It is similar to B. scintillans, B. chindwinensis and B. thomsonii but differs in plant size, hair characters, petiole length, flowers, stamens and fruits. Abstract:Saurauia decolorata from the Mt. Pantaron Range, Bukidnon and Mt. Balatukan Natural Park, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao Island, the Philippines, is illustrated and described as a new species. It closely resembles S. avellana and S. elegans in having branchlets, petioles, and abaxial surfaces of the leaves covered with tomentum and scales, densely clustered flowers, longitudinal anther dehiscence, and 3–4 styles. However, S. decolorata is distinguished from these species by its prominent rusty-colored tomentum and scales on branchlets and abaxial leaf surfaces, cordate leaf bases, crenate margin, 16–21 pairs of lateral veins, fascicled-cymose inflorescences that are both axillary and ramiflorous, and sparsely scaly pinkish green outer sepals. This discovery further emphasizes the unique biodiversity of the forests of the Pantaron Range and Mt. Balatukan which urgently need legislative protection and enhanced protected area management plans, respectively.

Abstract:A new, critically endangered jewel orchid species, Corybas boholensis, is described and illustrated from forest over limestone on Bohol Island, Philippines. This diminutive species, belonging to the C. pictus complex, is distinct in having a deep red flower and a truncate, warty dorsal sepal with 9–11 veins at its widest point near the apex. This is the fifth species of Corybas recorded for the Philippines.

Abstract:Begonia neisti sp. nov., a new species of B. sect. Platycentrum, from Dibang valley of Arunachal Pradesh, India is described and illustrated. A detailed taxonomic description, along with a photographic plate, illustration, distribution map and conservation status are provided. The conservation status of the new species is preliminarily assessed as data deficient (DD) according to the IUCN red list criteria. Molecular data (ITS2) underwent phylogenetic analysis (maximum parsimony (MP) and Bayesian inference (BI)) to elucidate the relationships of the studied species within the genus.

Abstract:A new species of Burmeistera (Campanulaceae, Lobelioideae) from the Pacific slope of the Northwestern Andes of Colombia, in the Antioquia and Chocó departments, is described. Burmeistera luciae is distinguished by being a hemiepiphytic herb with scandent and glabrous stems; ebracteate peduncle, obconic hypanthium, and its most particular feature, the filiform, ascending, and curved calyx lobes in anthesis; corolla lobes forming an obtuse angle in relation to the tube, falcate; ventral anthers barbate; ellipsoid berries that turn a striking fuchsia color when mature. These characters differentiate it from Burmeistera serraniaguae, B. succulenta, and B. crocodila, the three most morphologically similar species that also inhabit the humid Andean regions of the Chocó biogeographic region between Colombia and Ecuador. Additional comments related to its distribution, etymology, and conservation status are presented.

Abstract:Guatemala is recognized for its diverse and rich flora and fauna. It is estimated that over 1200 orchid species, classified in 223 genera, are known to occur in this rather small, yet megadiverse country. While studying the diversity of this plant group in the department of Baja Verapaz, we found individuals that clearly belonged to the genus Schiedeella, but whose features did not fit any previously known species. At that time, nine terrestrial taxon representatives were known to occur in Guatemala. We conducted the morphological analysis in accordance with the standard procedures of classical taxonomy. For phylogenetic reconstruction, 59 sequences of the ITS region and 48 of the trnL-trnF marker were applied. The topology of trees was obtained based on the Bayesian inference. Schiedeella bajaverapacensis was described and illustrated based on morphological evidence, and its taxonomic position was confirmed by phylogenetic analyses. The new entity is the 10th Schiedeella representative known from Guatemala.

Abstract:Liparis dumaguetensis (Orchidaceae) is a Philippine endemic species widely distributed throughout the Philippine archipelago. A review of literature and specimens demonstrated the necessity for lectotypification of this species which we accomplished in this paper. Further, detailed information is provided based on our current collection such as a description, colour photographs, an updated geographical distribution, habitat, phenology, and an IUCN conservation assessment.

Abstract:A new species of Begonia (Begoniaceae), B. dakrongensis, from Central Vietnam is described and illustrated. B. dakrongensis resembles B. abbreviata in its rhizomatous habit, short cymose-paniculate inflorescence with congested bracts, 4-tepaled staminate flowers, and 5-tepaled pistillate flowers. However, the new species markedly differs by having obtriangular-spathulate to oblong-obovate or widely obovate lamina (vs. ovate to broadly ovate), not oblique or nearly so (vs. oblique), widely obovate anthers (vs. narrowly obovate), and trigonous-globose ovary (vs. trigonous-ellipsoid).

Abstract:Bonnetia is the most representative genus of the Pantepui woody flora and is among the groups with the greatest endemism in the local flora. The genus has 28 currently recognized species in tropical America, 26 of them endemic to the Pantepui. Here we describe Bonnetia ayangannensis from the summit of Mount Ayanganna tepui in Guyana, providing a morphological description, illustrations, distribution maps, characterization of micromorphology under scanning electron microscopy and leaf venation, comments comparing the new species with closely related species, and a key for the identification of the species of Bonnetia occurring in Guyana. With its restricted distribution threatened by climate change, Bonnetia ayangannensis is assessed in the conservation threat category of Critically Endangered. Its description raises the number of endemic species of Bonnetia in the Pantepui to 27.
