Abstract:In a recent attempt, we developed a colinear backscattering Mueller matrix microscope by adding polarization state generator (PSG) and polarization state analyzer (PSA) into the illumination and detection optical paths of a commercial metallurgical microscope. It is found that specific efforts have to be made to reduce the artifacts due to the intrinsic residual polarizations of the optical system, particularly the dichroism due to the 45 degrees beam splitter. In this paper, we present a new calibration method based on numerical reconstruction of the instrument matrix to remove the artifacts introduced by beam splitter. Preliminary tests using a mirror as a standard sample show that the maximum Muller matrix element error of the colinear backscattering Muller matrix microscope can be reduced to a few percent.

Abstract:Compared to traditional optical technology, Mueller matrix imaging can obtain sample's complete polarization properties, thus can better characterize the microstructure and anisotropy information of the sample. For thick biological tissues or insitu living organs, backscattering Mueller matrix imaging is particularly attractive. In previous studies, we have established the collinear reflection Mueller matrix microscope based on dual rotating retarders (DRR-CRMMM), whose long acquisition time makes it difficult to characterize the polarization properties of the dynamically changing sample. In this paper, we propose and implement a fast collinear reflection Mueller matrix microscope based on dual DoFP polarimeters (DoFPs-CRMMM) and the corresponding calibration scheme to achieve accurate measurements. The system, which takes a Mueller matrix image within a few seconds, is tested for polarization monitoring of biological tissues during tissue optical clearing, and various polarization feature parameters are derived from the Mueller matrix images to reveal the characteristic microstructure variation of the tissues during the dynamic process of tissue optical clearing.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a Mueller matrix imaging system consisting of a spatially modulated polarization light source (SMPL) and a dual division-of-focal-plane (DoFP) polarimeters as the PSA and 2D detector. The system does not contain moving parts such as a rotating stage, which leads to more robust and reliable operations for applications in hostile settings. By taking Muller matrix images at variable distances between the SMPL and the target, we examine in details errors due to different spatial distributions in angle and intensity of different polarized lights. A calibration method is proposed to reduce such errors introduced by SMPL. The performances of the new imaging technique and the calibration method are tested in Mueller matrix imaging of different samples.

Abstract:We introduce an imaging system that can simultaneously record complete Mueller polarization responses for a set of wavelength channels in a single image capture. The division-of-focal-plane concept combines a multiplexed illumination scheme based on Fourier optics together with an integrated telescopic light-field imaging system. Polarization-resolved imaging is achieved using broadband nanostructured plasmonic polarizers as functional pinhole apertures. The recording of polarization and wavelength information on the image sensor is highly interpretable. We also develop a calibration approach based on a customized neural network architecture that can produce calibrated measurements in real-time. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we use our calibrated system to accurately reconstruct a thin film thickness map from a four-inch wafer. We anticipate that our concept will have utility in metrology, machine vision, computational imaging, and optical computing platforms.

Dynamic Mueller matrix polarimetry using generalized measurements

Abstract:Mueller matrices provide a complete description of a medium's response to excitation by polarized light, and their characterization is important across a broad range of applications from ellipsometry in material science to polarimetry in biochemistry, medicine and astronomy. Here we introduce single-shot Mueller matrix polarimetry based on generalized measurements performed with a Poincaré beam. We determine the Mueller matrix of a homogeneous medium with unknown optical activity by detecting its optical response to a Poincaré beam, which across its profile contains all polarization states, and analyze the resulting polarization pattern in terms of four generalized measurements, which are implemented as a path-displaced Sagnac interferometer. We illustrate the working of our Mueller matrix polarimetry on the example of tilted and rotated wave plates and find excellent agreement with predictions as well as alternative Stokes measurements. After initial calibration, the alignment of the device stays stable for up to 8 hours, promising suitability for the dynamic characterization of Mueller matrices that change in time.

Abstract:A polarizing measurement system is designed which could acquire Mueller matrix of the target cells. The system utilizes a liquid crystal modulator bonding with polarization splitter prism as its key component, to realize Mueller matrix measurement with a period of 10-time light intensity. This method can easily acquire real-time data divided from Mueller matrix, which is more efficient than other method. Besides the specific design and the experiment result are presented based on this system. The analysis and discussion of measurement error are also included, which indicates that this system's error can be controlled within 2%.

Abstract:In this study, we present a flat-field Mueller matrix imaging system to reduce the reconstruction error caused by critical illumination. This study demonstrates that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the reconstructed images is improved by about eight times by adding a beam shaping module made up of microlens arrays to a traditional Mueller system. The scalar diffraction theory and polarization numerical simulation show the ability of the new device in minimizing the adverse effects of light source noise on polarization reconstruction results. Finally, the experiment results on standard resolution board, porous anodic alumina, and real pathological slices further confirm the superiority of the flat-field Mueller system in precisely identifying sample structure and quantitative differences between various polarization parameters (depolarization ratio Delta, linear retardance delta, and birefringence orientation theta), demonstrating the potential of flat-field polarization imaging in pathological diagnosis and tissue characteristic extraction.

Abstract:When light scatters off an object its polarization, in general, changes - a transformation described by the object's Mueller matrix. Mueller matrix imaging polarimetry is an important technique in science and technology to image the spatially varying polarization response of an object of interest, to reveal rich information otherwise invisible to traditional imaging. In this work, we conceptualize, implement and demonstrate a compact and minimalist Mueller matrix imaging system - composed of a metasurface to produce structured polarization illumination, and a metasurface for polarization analysis - that can, in a single shot, acquire images for all sixteen components of an object's spatially varying Mueller matrix. Our implementation, which is free of any moving parts or bulk polarization optics, should enable and empower applications in real-time medical imaging, material characterization, machine vision, target detection, and other important areas.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report a dual division of focal plane (DoFP) polarimeters-based full Mueller matrix microscope (DoFPs-MMM) for fast polarization imaging. Both acquisition speed and measurement accuracy are improved compared with those of a Mueller matrix microscope based on dual rotating retarders. Then, the system is applied to probe the polarization properties of a red blood cells smear. The experimental results show that a DoFPs-MMM has the potential to be a powerful tool for probing dynamic processes in living cells in future studies.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a method to measure the Mueller matrix of biological tissues rapidly. Firstly, the effect of biological tissues on the incident light can be represented as absorption, phase retardance and depolarization. This paper defines four parameters as absorption coefficient, phase retardance coefficient, depolarization proportion and azimuth of incident light, respectively. Secondly, we decompose the incident light into two parts: one is totally depolarized, the other is absorbed and its phase is retarded. The two processes are characterized by two corresponding Mueller submatrixes. Then two Mueller submatrixes are derived based on the relation between the Stokes vectors of incident light and output light. Moreover, on the basis of a linear combination of the two Mueller submatrixes, we obtain the Mueller matrix of biological tissues, which contains the unknown parameters. Lastly, we employ the pellicle cell of magnolia for the sample and acquisition of it's polarization images. Then this paper applies the method to construct calculation model from the image data. And just 6 intensity measurements are needed to calculate the four parameters.The experimental results are consistent with others. Furthermore, the presented method can reduce the measurement times from 36 to 6 and improve the measurement efficiency significantly.

Abstract:We propose a design of a Mueller-matrix-microscopic system that can efficiently capture the parameter image with two liquid-crystal modulators (LCMs). The usage of the LCMs can significantly reduce the measurement time for Mueller-matrix parameters. This system employs one LCM to realize real-time measurement of all subimages derived from the Stokes vector and the other one to change the light sources. Seven experimental results, acquired by using incident light with LCM-modulated light sources, are enough for biological research. An error analysis for m44 of the Mueller matrix is involved in order to present the error evaluation. Abstract:The polar decomposition method for Mueller matrices proposed by Lu-Chipman has been demonstrated and validated for many applications. However, in some situations, e.g., when analyzing the Mueller matrix of birefringent turbid media with Mie-sized scatterers acquired in reflection geometry, the method may suffer from limitations due to the assumptions required by this method. Here we extend the Lu-Chipman method and show that it can provide more reasonable results for these situations. The method has been validated experimentally with turbid phantoms. Thus, this Letter may prove useful in tissue polarimetry.

Abstract:Mueller matrix (MM) polarimetry is prevalently used in biomedical research and clinical diagnosis, as it can provide comprehensive polarization information of tissue label-freely. However, the widely adopted constantstep rotating MM polarimetric systems often require a great deal of measuring time, thus can hardly be employed in dynamic biomedical application scenarios. In this study, we present a novel idea for generating multiple states of polarization using a filter -like sliding method instead of rotating quarter-wave plate, and analyze the superior characterization ability of additionally acquired circularly polarization information using the proposed incidence-modularized polarimetry system (IMPS) on dynamic tissue polarimetry. We design a polarization state generator assembled with multiple polarizer units for incident states of polarization modulation. Driven by a screw linear motor, the module polarizer units are traversed sequentially at a high speed to reduce the measurement time of a 3 x 4 MM to within 5 s. It is shown that the proposed IMPS can even achieve a faster measurement for specifically targeted polarimetry schemes. Besides, it can circumvent various measuring errors benefiting from its fixed and stationary polarizer units. Both transmission and backscattering tissue imaging results demonstrate that, the IMPS exhibits accurate imaging capability of providing polarization information such as circular diattenuation, retardance and birefringence orientation with high temporal resolution. With the appearance of various screw linear motors of advanced mechanical performance, the idea and system developed in this study can offer a potentially powerful tool of fast and informative imaging in various in -vivo clinical applications.
Removing the Polarization Artifacts in Mueller Matrix Images Recorded with A Grin Lens: A Simulation Approach

Abstract:When measuring the Mueller matrix images of a sample with a GRIN lens, many Mueller matrix elements will be seriously distorted by the intrinsic birefringence of the GRIN lens. Imaging polarimeter measurements of GRIN lenses showed radially symmetric phase retardance polarization. We simulated the Mueller matrices of the GRIN lens with light of different incident angles, removed the polarization artifacts with the simulated results and recovered the polarization features of the sample. The results demonstrate the possibility of performing Mueller matrix measurements using endoscopes or other optical instruments with strong birefringence.

Abstract:We develop a modulus Mueller matrix microscope by adding polarization state generator and analyzer (PSG and PSA) to a commercial transmission optical microscope. The microscope is calibrated to minimize errors of the Mueller matrix elements to 0.01. Preliminary experimental results on biological tissues and different materials and Monte Carlo simulations show that the microscope can provide quantitative information on the characteristic microstructural features of complex samples, which make it a potentially powerful tool in clinical diagnosis and material studies.
Error Analysis and Calibration Improvement of the Imaging Section in a Mueller Matrix Microscope

Abstract:Currently, there are various calibration methods available to reduce the errors caused by the polarizing section of a dual-rotating-retarder polarimeter. Although these methods have high measurement accuracy, their robustness must be improved and the influence of the imaging section needs be discussed when they are applied in Mueller matrix microscopes. In this paper, a method of error source analysis and element calibration for the Mueller matrix microscope is proposed by using error transform coefficient matrices to account for the polarizing effect of the imaging section. Using Taylor expansion, an approximate linear relationship is established between the sources of errors and the Mueller matrix elements of the measured sample. From this relationship, error magnification coefficient matrices are calculated to determine the specific parameter errors in both the polarizing and imaging sections. Furthermore, elements in the fourth row or column of the error magnification coefficient matrix are especially important for the imaging section. The measurement and simulation results for an air sample and a quarter-wave plate sample as the standard samples, as well as a Daphnia organism sample with complex internal structure, are investigated and discussed. Furthermore, the comparison results reveal the effect of the imaging section on the birefringence characteristics of the Mueller matrix. With the proposed method, the maximum error can be reduced to be less than 0.01 for all the matrix elements and for the amplitude parameter of birefringence, even when the two system parameters a 2 and a 3 of the rotating mechanical part deviate from the default.
