Abstract:[Objective] To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of solitary fibrous tumors.[Methods] The clinical features,pathologic patterns and immunophenotype were analysed for three cases of SFTs.[Results] Histologically,SFT was composed of bland spindle cell,typically arranged in haemangiopericytoma-like pattern.Positive immunoreactivity for vimentin,CD34 and bcl-2,negative for Cytokeratin(Pan),SMA,CD117 and S-100.[Conclusions] SFT is a rare tumor,differential diagnosis should be made with mesothelioma,hemangiopericytoma neurofibroma and others.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) belonging to a distinct group of mesenchymal tumors, was originally described by Klemper and Rabin in the pleura in year 1931. However, it can also be extra-pleural in origin. With tongue being the most common site involved in this region, epiglottis, larynx, thyroid, external auditory canal, lacrimal sac, hypoglossal nerve, parotid gland, sublingual gland, Para pharyngeal space, nasopharynx, scalp, gingiva, orbit and infratemporal fossa as well as paranasal sinuses and nasal cavities can also get involved. But SFTs involving nasal cavities and nasopharynx are quite uncommon, accounting for < 0.1% of all Sino-nasal neoplasms. Until now there have only been 40 cases of nasal SFT reported in literature. We report the case of an extraserosa solitary fibrous tumor arising from the nasal cavity with extension to the sphenoid sinus, a much rarer presentation of its type. Our case report is one of its type, emphasizing the need conducting further studies on the nature and management of the disease.

Abstract:The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of the mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from the pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, also affecting the head and neck region. SFTs are benign in most cases, but 10%-15% of extrapleural SFTs show malignant behavior in the form of recurrent or metastatic disease. We present the case of a 25-year-old female who presented with an asymptomatic left-sided facial swelling of over three years. She had a diffuse swelling in the left preauricular region, extending to the temporal region deep to the zygomatic arch. On magnetic resonance imaging, the vascular lobulated mass occupied the masticator space, infratemporal fossa, and parapharyngeal space, eroding the mandible. An ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of SFT, positive for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 and negative for TLE1. After preoperative embolization, the tumor was excised through a midline lip split approach with posterior segmental mandibulectomy and reconstruction with a titanium plate. Histopathological report was consistent with SFT. Due to high-risk features, she was advised adjuvant radiation therapy. SFTs of the head and neck are exceedingly rare and those with aggressive behavior even more so. To our knowledge, this is the only case of SFT arising in the masticator space. Diagnosis is often difficult and not definitive without immunohistochemistry. In most cases, complete surgical excision is the only treatment necessary. Regardless, all patients require close clinical follow-up for several years.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare, benign neoplasm originating from mesenchymal cells. Diagnosis is typically established through histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation. Immunohistochemical analysis typically reveals positivity for CD-34, CD99, and Bcl-2, and negativity for S100 and smooth muscle actin. In this clinical case, a 59-year-old male patient, who is a smoker, presented with a swelling in the right buccal mucosa without any accompanying pain. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the presence of SFT, with a Ki-67 index of 1%.

Abstract:Objective To explore the diagnostic methods and therapeutic principles of maxillofacial solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) through a retrospective analysis of clinical cases.Methods From 2009 to 2014,patients with maxillofacial SFT were counted in Shanghai No.9 Hospital oral -pathology database.The clinical data,imaging data and diagnostic methods were analyzed.Results 13 patients were selected in this study,whose post -operative pathology diagnoses were SFT with no typical clinical specificities,and their tumors were significantly enhancing masses according to the CT data.The immunohistochemistry of neoplasm cells were all positive for CD34 and Vim,and negative for Des.The wound healings were fine without any complications in 13 patients.During the post -operative follow -up period of 3 to 60 months,recurrences were found in 2 patients whose first pathological results were malignant SFT.After a reoperation,recurrences didn′t happen again in these 2 patients.Conclusions SFT was a rare disease in the maxillofacial region,and only the immunohistochemistry of the whole specimen would confirm the diagnosis.Complete radical resection was the first choice,long-term close follow -up was mandatory to control the recurrences,and the patient′s prognosis was usually satisfactory.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a remarkably uncommon mesenchymal tumor. STAT6 level and a combination of clinical, pathological, and molecular features are required to arrive at a proper diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY In this report, we present an intriguing case involving a 43-year-old woman who initially exhibited symptoms of a bleeding retroperitoneal tumor, initially resembling a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, but later confirmed as an SFT. However, a year later, what was initially believed to be a recurrence of her SFT was instead identified as a desmoid tumor. CONCLUSION Distinguishing SFT from other tumors was pivotal. Correcting misdiagnoses of tumor type initially and of recurrence later was necessary for appropriate treatment of the correct desmoid type.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are classified as fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumors that originate from CD34-positive dendritic cells and usually occur in the pleura. In this paper, we describe a case of SFT within the joint cavity of the left knee. A 60-year-old man was admitted to hospital due to swelling in the left knee for the past 8 months without relevant trauma history. X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET-CT) presented a large, ill-circumscribed, hypervascular, and highly enhanced mass with eccentric calcification and peripheral, intra-lesional vessels. Subsequently, the patient underwent surgical resection. Postoperative pathology confirmed the neoplastic cells to be positive for CD34, Bcl-2, and SATA6, therefore was finally diagnosed as malignant SFT. The patient developed bone metastases within 1 year after surgery. SFT in the joint cavity is rare, and it is difficult to make a preoperative diagnosis.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm that rarely metastasizes. SFTs was first described in relation to pleura. However, occurrence of this tumor type has been reported in other sites like peritoneum, liver, adrenal gland, meninges and oral cavity. In head and neck region, oral cavity is the most common site of involvement. Most of the solitary fibrous tumors are benign and present as an asymptomatic slow growing mass. Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. Hereby, we describe a case of 71-year-old male with malignant solitary fibrous tumor arising from right maxilla invading the right orbit presenting as proptosis.

Abstract:Ear, Nose &Throat Journal, Ahead of Print. Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a rare type of soft tissue tumor first identified as arising from pleura and usually arising in the thoracic cavity. The incidence of SFTs arising in the head and neck region is much lower, accounting for about 7% of SFT cases. Involvement of the larynx specifically is exceedingly rare and can have inconspicuous presentations, making them challenging to diagnose. This case report represents a patient with a history of urothelial cancer and obstructive sleep apnea who was ultimately found to have a fibrous tumor of the larynx, which was confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry and treated with transoral microsurgical resection. This case report aims to shed light on an infrequently documented location of a solitary laryngeal fibrous tumor and a unique clinical presentation of this rare pathology and its successful surgical management.

Sinonasal Tract Solitary Fibrous Tumor: A Clinicopathologic Study of Six Cases with a Comprehensive Review of the Literature

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are well recognized in the head and neck region, but rarely arise in the sinonasal tract (SNT). Six primary SNT SFTs were identified in the files of Southern California Permanente Medical Group between 2006 and 2017. The patients included five males and one female ranging in age from 33 to 72 years (mean 52 years), most of whom presented clinically with nasal obstruction. Three tumors involved the nasal cavity alone, one involved the paranasal sinuses, and two involved both the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Histologically, the tumors were characterized by a variably cellular proliferation of cytologically bland spindle cells within a collagenous stroma with prominent interspersed branching vessels. Mitotic activity was low (range 0-2 per 10 high power fields) and there was no evidence of pleomorphism or tumor necrosis. Surface ulceration was noted. By immunohistochemistry, the lesional cells were positive for CD34, STAT6 and bcl-2. Clinical follow up information was available for all patients (range 32-102 months; mean 72 months). There were no recurrences or metastases and all were alive with no evidence of disease at last follow-up. SFTs rarely affect the SNT, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of SNT mesenchymal lesions. Immunohistochemical expression of STAT6 can aid in diagnosis and separation of SFT from other spindle cell lesions occurring at this anatomic site. In combination with cases reported in the literature, primary SNT SFT behave in an indolent manner with conservative treatment.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms primarily found in the pleural region but have been documented in diverse extrapleural sites, including the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, albeit infrequently. Here, we present a case of a 48-year-old female who presented with a right-sided nasal mass and associated ophthalmologic symptoms, ultimately diagnosed with a benign spindle cell lesion localized to the nasal cavity. The patient underwent a comprehensive evaluation involving clinical examination, radiological imaging, and histopathological analysis, leading to the identification of a benign solitary fibrous tumor. Notably, diagnosing SFTs in the nasal cavity presents challenges due to their nonspecific clinical and imaging features, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach for accurate diagnosis and optimal management. Surgical excision, preferably via endoscopic techniques, remains the cornerstone of treatment based on tumor characteristics and extent. This case underscores the importance of recognizing uncommon presentations of sinonasal lesions, navigating diagnostic complexities, and emphasizing the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving favorable treatment outcomes for patients with such nasal cavity tumors.
[Clinical analysis of 12 cases of solitary fibrous tumors in nasal cavity, sinuses and skull base]

Abstract:Objective:To summarize and analyze the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management and prognostic features of solitary fibrous tumor（SFT） in nasal cavity, sinus and skull base. Methods:The clinical data of 12 patients with STF from nasal cavity, sinus and cranial base admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from April 2014 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, including 4 patients admitted to the department of Otolaryngology head and neck surgery and 8 patients admitted to the department of skull base surgery The clinical characteristics, diagnosis, management and prognosis were analyzed. Results:Twelve patients were included in this research, including 7 males and 5 females. All patients received surgical treatment, and 4 patients also received postoperative adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. After follow-up for 12-60 months, 4 patients with adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy had a good prognosis, and among 8 patients who did not receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy, 6 patients had good prognosis and 2 patients showed relapse. Four patients with a history of recurrence of SFT after surgery were admitted to our hospital for surgical treatment, in which 1 patient had relapse after surgery, and none had metastasis. Nasal cavity and sinus to skull base SFT is rare. The most effective treatment for this disease is surgical resection, and postoperative adjuvant chemoradiation and long-term follow-up can achieve a better prognosis. En bloc resection is the key to treatment success.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) represent a rare mesenchymal malignancy that can occur anywhere in the body. Due to the low prevalence of the disease, there is a lack of contemporary data regarding patient demographics and cancer-control outcomes. Methods: Within the SEER database (2000–2019), we identified 1134 patients diagnosed with malignant SFTs. The distributions of patient demographics and tumor characteristics were tabulated. Cumulative incidence plots and competing risks analyses were used to estimate cancer-specific mortality (CSM) after adjustment for other-cause mortality. Results: Of 1134 SFT patients, 87% underwent surgical resection. Most of the tumors were in the chest (28%), central nervous system (22%), head and neck (11%), pelvis (11%), extremities (10%), abdomen (10%) and retroperitoneum (6%), in that order. Stage was distributed as follows: localized (42%) vs. locally advanced (35%) vs. metastatic (13%). In multivariable competing risks models, independent predictors of higher CSM were stage (locally advanced HR: 1.6; metastatic HR: 2.9), non-surgical management (HR: 3.6) and tumor size (9–15.9 cm HR: 1.6; ≥16 cm HR: 1.9). Conclusions: We validated the importance of stage and surgical resection as independent predictors of CSM in malignant SFTs. Moreover, we provide novel observations regarding the independent importance of tumor size, regardless of the site of origin, stage and/or surgical resection status.

Abstract:Solitary fibrous tumors are well-recognized in the pleura and their occurrence in the nasal cavity is uncommon. They show a hemangiopericytoma-like vasculature, a "patternless pattern" of growth, and lesions characterized by both hypercellularity and hypocellularity. As a malignant form of SFT, mesenchymal neoplasm is extremely uncommon and poorly understood, although there are no established standards for making this diagnosis, it is nonetheless accepted. It can develop either de novo or within an already-existing benign SFT, and there are few published accounts of the cytopathologic characteristics of these tumors.In this case, a patient complained of tenderness on the right nasal root and diplopia for six months. Here, we report on a case of malignant solitary fibrous tumors in the nasal cavity, which extended into the orbit, and review the radiologic and pathologic features.
Clinical Analysis of 47 Cases of Solitary Fibrous Tumor

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to summarize the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT). In total, 47 cases of SFTs diagnosed by postoperative pathology between January 2002 and September 2014 were retrospectively reviewed, and the general information, clinical manifestations, imaging techniques, treatment, pathology and follow-up findings were analyzed. Of the 47 patients, clinical characteristics were collected in 37 cases (18 men and 19 women; mean age, 44.1 years; age range, 13-72 years). The maximum diameters of the tumors were 1.5-25 cm, with a mean diameter of 8.8 cm. The symptoms were various and non-specific. Imaging examinations following iodinated contrast administration showed the SFTs to be well-defined, cystic or solid mass and enhanced. On color Doppler ultrasound, SFTs were described as hypoechoic, clear, irregular masses. All patients underwent surgical resection, and SFT was diagnosed by postoperative pathological and immunohistochemical examination. Of the 47 patients, 25 received complete follow-up of 5-130 months, with a median follow-up period of 35.2 months, that included a color Doppler ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scan every 6-12 months. At the end of the follow-up period all patients were alive and healthy, with the exception of one patient, who presented with recurrence 15 months after surgery. The findings of the present study showed SFT to be a rare systemic disease with no particular clinical manifestations. In the cases reviewed in the present study, CT, magnetic resonance imaging scans and color Doppler ultrasound were important for the diagnosis of SFT, while the definitive diagnosis relied on pathological and immunohistochemical examinations. Surgery, the primary treatment for SFT, was performed, and, following complete removal of the tumor, the prognosis was favorable.

Owing to its rarity, the diagnosis of extrapleural SFT is challenging and requires an integrated approach comprising specific clinical, imaging, histological, and immunohistochemical findings. Case presentation: Herein, we report the imaging findings of a rare case of SFT arising from bilateral ovaries confirmed by surgical excision and histological examination. No adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy was given to the patient, and she was disease-free with no evidence of recurrence or metastasis at the 96-month postoperative follow-up. Although it mostly follows a favorable course, SFT is notoriously difficult for prognostication because of its propensity for late relapse or even metastases in 10-39% of cases. Conclusion: Close follow-up is recommended because of the limited information on its long-term behavior.
