Abstract:Exploring the graphene material is premised on the graphene sheets being single-layer graphene (SG) or bi-layer graphene (BG) state, and graphene suspension keeps stably disperse are critical. Since graphene has a highly conjugated system, it is easy to conduct strong π-π interaction with conjugated structure. In this paper, by dispersing graphene powder at low boiling point solvent water or ethanol, ensuring the excellent properties of graphene are not affected by the solvent, which simultaneously solves the difficulty of removing organic solvents. On the basis the concentration of graphene suspension can be greatly improved and no damage to the graphene sheets in the presence of dispersant. This method allows us to prepare a large amount of excellent graphene dispersion, making it possible to obtain graphene-based materials through the low-cost technology, as well as opening up the opportunity for exploiting the application of this nanocarbon material with unique structure.Graphical abstractᅟ

Abstract:As a reinforcement phase to form metal matrix composites, graphene has attracted more and more attention due to its excellent properties i.e. optical, electrical and mechanical properties. However, the dispersion of graphene has always been an important factor that significantly effects its development. This paper mainly summarizes the physical methods to improve the dispersion of graphene and analyzes its internal mechanism, moreover the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are depicted and compared. Finally, the improvement of the dispersion of graphene and its future applications are prospected.

Abstract:The large-scale preparation of stable graphene aqueous dispersion has been a challenge in the theoretical research and industrial applications of graphene. This study determined the suitable exfoliation agent for overcoming the van der Waals force between the layers of expanded graphite sheets using the liquid-phase exfoliation method on the basis of surface energy theory to prepare a single layer of graphene. To evenly and stably disperse graphene in pure water, the dispersants were selected based on Hansen solubility parameters, namely, hydrophilicity, heterocyclic structure and easy combinative features. The graphene exfoliation grade and the dispersion stability, number of layers and defect density in the dispersion were analysed under Tyndall phenomenon using volume sedimentation method, zeta potential analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy characterization. Subsequently, the long-chain quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactant octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (0.3 wt.%) was electrolyzed in pure water to form ammonium ions, which promoted hydrogen bonding in the remaining oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the stripped graphene. Forming the electrostatic steric hindrance effect to achieve the stable dispersion of graphene in water can exfoliate a minimum of eight layers of graphene nanosheets; the average number of layers was less than 14. The 0.1 wt.% (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate: melamine = 1:1) mixed system forms π–π interaction and hydrogen bonding with graphene in pure water, which allow the stable dispersion of graphene for 22 days without sedimentation. The findings can be beneficial for the large-scale preparation of waterborne graphene in industrial applications.

Abstract:Pristine graphene flakes, with ∼12% monolayers, are directly exfoliated from natural graphite, and noncovalently modified by an amorphous–crystalline block copolymer, polyvinylcyclohexane-b-polyethylene-b-polyvinylcyclohexane (PVCH-b-PE-b-PVCH). The PE block selectively crystallizes on the graphene surface, while the PVCH block extends freely and stabilizes the graphene flakes in the aliphatic and aromatic solvents, which are generally viewed as nonsolvents for graphene. The rational solubility of the graphene flakes in these low-boiling-point solvents facilitates their solution-phase processing. After vacuum filtration, a freestanding graphene film with excellent electrical and mechanical properties is obtained, which can meet the requirements of large-area graphene-based thin-film devices.
High concentration and stable few-layer graphene dispersions prepared by the exfoliation of graphite in different organic solvents

Abstract:A series of stable graphene dispersions in different organic solvents were prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation of microcrystalline graphite. The pristine graphite was heat-treated in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone before it was exfoliated in solvents containing 0.1 mg mL−1 polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results implied that the interlayer spacing of graphite increased after the heat treatment. The increased interlayer spacing makes it favorable for organic molecules to enter the lattice of graphite, and is helpful in the exfoliation of graphite for the production of graphene flakes. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the resulting graphene flakes are high-quality products without any significant structural defects. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the graphene flakes consist of single-to-few layer graphene, and also demonstrated that the concentration of PVP is an essential factor in the deposition of graphene flakes onto a mica substrate. More importantly, the resulting graphene dispersions can be used to fabricate graphene films and disk arrays on quartz glass. Therefore, it is possible that the graphene dispersions in this study can be used for the preparation of large-area graphene films on different substrates.

Abstract:Homogeneous graphene dispersions with tunable concentrations are fundamental prerequisites for the preparation of graphene‐based materials. Here, a strategy for effectively dispersing graphene using graphene oxide (GO) to produce homogeneous, tunable, and ultrahigh concentration graphene dispersions (>150 mg mL−1) is proposed. The structure of GO with abundant edge‐bound hydrophilic carboxyl groups and in‐plane hydrophobic π‐conjugated domains allows it to function as a special "surfactant" that enables graphene dispersion. In acidic solutions, GO sheets tend to form edge‐to‐edge hydrogen bonds and expose the π‐conjugated regions which interact with graphene, thereby promoting graphene dispersion. While in alkaline solutions, GO sheets tend to stack in a surface‐to‐surface manner, thereby blocking the π‐conjugated regions and impeding graphene dispersion. As the concentration of GO‐dispersed graphene dispersion (GO/G) increases, a continuous transition between four states is obtained, including a dilute dispersion, a thick paste, a free‐standing gel, and a kneadable, playdough‐like material. Furthermore, GO/G can be applied to create desirable structures including highly conductive graphene films with excellent flexibility, thereby demonstrating an immense potential in flexible composite materials.

Solvothermal synthesis of homogeneous graphene dispersion with high concentration

Abstract:We developed a simple surfactant-free approach to graphene dispersion through a solvothermal reduction of graphene oxides in N,N-dimethylformamide, and the concentration of the as-prepared graphene dispersion can reach up to 0.3mgmL−1. The as-prepared graphene could be re-dispersed well in more than six kinds of solvents, such as N-methylpyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and acetonitrile. In the solvothermal reduction process, no extra reducing agent and/or stabilizer is needed, and the deoxygenation is promoted by the relatively high temperature and autogenous pressure in the autoclave. Atomic force microscopy analysis shows most of the graphene sheets in the as-prepared dispersion are single-layered. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy confirm the efficient removal of the oxygen-containing groups.

Abstract:Graphene is an excellent 2D material that has extraordinary properties such as high surface area, electron mobility, conductivity, and high light transmission. Polymer composites are used in many applications in place of polymers. In recent years, the development of stable graphene dispersions with high graphene concentrations has attracted great attention due to their applications in energy, bio-fields, and so forth. Thus, this review essentially discusses the preparation of stable graphene–polymer composites/dispersions. Discussion on existing methods of preparing graphene is included with their merits and demerits. Among existing methods, mechanical exfoliation is widely used for the preparation of stable graphene dispersion, the theoretical background of this method is discussed briefly. Solvents, surfactants, and polymers that are used for dispersing graphene and the factors to be considered while preparing stable graphene dispersions are discussed in detail. Further, the direct applications of stable graphene dispersions are discussed briefly. Finally, a summary and prospects for the development of stable graphene dispersions are proposed.

Abstract:It is difficult to achieve high efficiency production of hydrophobic graphene by liquid phase exfoliation due to its poor dispersibility and the tendency of graphene sheets to undergo π−π stacking. Here, we report a water-phase, non-dispersion exfoliation method to produce highly crystalline graphene flakes, which can be stored in the form of a concentrated slurry (50 mg mL−1) or filter cake for months without the risk of re-stacking. The as-exfoliated graphene slurry can be directly used for 3D printing, as well as fabricating conductive graphene aerogels and graphene−polymer composites, thus avoiding the use of copious quantities of organic solvents and lowering the manufacturing cost. This non-dispersion strategy paves the way for the cost-effective and environmentally friendly production of graphene-based materials.

Abstract:Graphene is a honeycomb hexagonal two-dimensional (2D) crystal nanomaterial with a thickness of only 0.334 nm. It has been widely used and studied because of its ultra-thin 2D nano-characteristics and excellent electrical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties. With the continuous in-depth study of graphene, the liquid-phase dispersion of graphene has also achieved breakthroughs. This review summarizes the research progress of the liquid-phase exfoliation mechanism, exfoliation method, stable dispersion mechanism, and dispersion method of graphene in recent years. The research situations of the Hamaker constant theory in exfoliation mechanism and Hansen solubility coefficient theory in stable dispersion mechanism are mainly discussed. The shortcomings of the research are summarized and analyzes the graphene liquid phase dispersed in the important challenge in the future. The stable dispersion method of graphene is also summarized. In the future, the π-π interaction will be the most potential method for studying graphene stabilization.

Abstract:A simple solvent exchange method is introduced to prepare high-concentration and surfactant-free graphene liquid dispersion. Natural graphite flakes are first exfoliated into graphene in dimethylformamide (DMF). DMF is then exchanged by terpineol through distillation, relying on their large difference in boiling points. Graphene can then be concentrated thanks to the volume difference between DMF and terpineol. The concentrated graphene dispersions are used to fabricate transparent conductive thin films, which possess comparable properties to those prepared by more complex methods.

Abstract:Graphene dispersion in different surfactant aqueous solutions was investigated by absorbance measurements. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is an excellent low cost and "green". dispersion agent. By increasing the concentration of the PVP solution, the graphene suspension concentration can reach similar to 1.3 mg/mL, which is higher than those reported previously. This high-concentration graphene dispersion will play an important role in the application of graphene-based materials. A graphene-based membrane was assembled by the evaporation of a PVP-stabilized graphene suspension at the liquid-air interface. The free-standing, self-assembled membrane with a flat surface and ordered structure could find great practical value in a wide range of applications.
High-concentration graphene dispersions prepared via exfoliation of graphite in PVA/H2O green solvent system using high-shear forces

Abstract:Herein, an efficient, facile, scalable production of graphene dispersions via exfoliation of graphite in an environment-friendly PVA/H2O solvent system is reported. To warrant the impact of processing parameters on exfoliation efficiency, a systematic investigation is carried out using UV–visible spectroscopy. Under the optimal shearing parameters (1 h, 10 k rpm) with the PVA-to-fed graphite mass ratio of 10, a high concentration graphene dispersion (3.36 mg mL−1) is achieved. The estimated graphene yield is found to be 33% that further increases to 90% after sediment recycling. With the aim of detailed quality analysis, centrifugal cascading is adopted to predominately sort the graphene flakes from the upper end of the distribution. Through various characterization techniques, it is confirmed that the resulting dispersion comprises high-quality graphene flakes (1–5 layers) having thickness up to 1.48 nm, lateral dimension ranging from 0.3 to 4 µm, and quite a low level of defects (ID/IG = 0.1). The statistical distribution histogram reveals that most flakes are single-layer (41%), including some bi-layer (21%) and tri-layer (28%), while the remaining can be said five or multi-layer graphene. Meanwhile, the efficacy of the PVA/H2O solvent system is also demonstrated using ultrasonic exfoliation, providing a high concentration of graphene (1.1 mg mL−1) in a relatively short time (8 h). Furthermore, the applicability of the PVA-stabilized graphene dispersion is addressed by fabricating various graphene products such as graphene paper electrodes, graphene composites, and graphene thin films. Impressively, the graphene paper electrode imparts an exceptionally high specific capacitance of 199.63 F g−1 in a potential window range of 0 to 2 V, and hence could be a promising alternative to traditional electrodes in supercapacitors. Conclusively, the exfoliation of graphite in a green polymer–solvent system offers to produce highly concentrated graphene dispersions at a minimal cost that could be widely applicable in different research areas, thus holding the potential for commercial viability.

Abstract:We report a simple, high-yield method of producing homogeneous dispersions of unfunctionalized and nonoxidized graphene nanosheets in ortho-dichlorobenzene (ODCB). Sonication/centrifugation of various graphite materials results in stable homogeneous dispersions. ODCB dispersions of graphene avert the need for harsh oxidation chemistry and allow for chemical functionalization of graphene materials by a range of methods. Additionally, films produced from ODCB-graphene have high conductivity.

Abstract:A highly reactive graphene dispersant that possesses multi Si─OH groups is developed. It can not only stabilize graphene in both water and ethanol at ultrahigh concentrations, but also self‐cross‐linkable via dehydration condensation. The unique feature makes it particularly suitable for the preparation of graphene‐doped phase change coatings, which is appropriate for plenty of substrates and various circumstances. High efficient dispersant that meanwhile possesses additional functions is highly desirable for the fabrication of graphene‐based composite. In this paper, a new reactive dispersant, multi‐silanols grafted naphthalenediamine (MSiND), is synthesized, which shows superiority compared with conventional dispersants. It can not only stabilize graphene in water at a high concentration of up to 16 mg mL−1, but also simultaneously be applicable for ethanol medium, in which the graphene concentration can be as high as 12 mg mL−1 at the weight ratio of 1:1 (MSiND:graphene). The dispersion is compatible with multi‐matrixes and affinity to various substrates. In addition, MSiND exhibits excellent reactivity due to the existence of high‐density silanol groups. Tough graphene coatings are constructed on glass slides and non‐woven fabric simply by direct painting and dip‐coating. Moreover, with the assistance of MSiND, graphene‐doped phase‐change coatings on hydrophobic non‐woven fabric (e.g., functional mask) are prepared via the spray method. The composite coatings show enhanced mechanical strength and excellent energy storage performance, exhibiting great potential in heat preservation and thermotherapy.

Abstract:Graphene is at the centre of nanotechnology research. In order to fully exploit its outstanding properties, a mass production method is necessary. Two main routes are possible: large-scale growth or large-scale exfoliation. Here, we demonstrate graphene dispersions with concentrations up to ~0.01 mg/ml by dispersion and exfoliation of graphite in organic solvents such as N-methyl-pyrrolidone. This occurs because the energy required to exfoliate graphene is balanced by the solvent-graphene interaction for solvents whose surface energy matches that of graphene. We confirm the presence of individual graphene sheets with yields of up to 12% by mass, using absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The absence of defects or oxides is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron, infra-red and Raman spectroscopies. We can produce conductive, semi-transparent films and conductive composites. Solution processing of graphene opens up a whole range of potential large-scale applications from device or sensor fabrication to liquid phase chemistry.

Abstract:Efficient production of high-quality, functionalized graphene is highly desirable for large-scale applications of graphene. Herein, a route for producing high-quality, polystyrene (PS)-functionalized graphene is demonstrated via graphite exfoliation in chloroform with a heterobifunctional hyperbranched polyethylene, HBPE@Py@PS, as stabilizer. The HBPE@Py@PS, possessing a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple PS side chains, is synthesized by combining chain walking polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization techniques. It is confirmed that the HBPE@Py@PS can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in chloroform under sonication to render stable dispersions of high-quality graphene, with an exfoliation efficiency high as 15% and a monolayer proportion, 61%. Meanwhile, it can irreversibly adsorb on the exfoliated graphene surface based on the - stacking interactions, concurrently rendering PS-functionalized graphene that is fluorescent and highly dispersible in chloroform, with a film conductivity reaching 1100 S m(-1). The as-produced graphene may find its applications as nanofiller for various PS-based graphene nanocomposites.
Efficient Exfoliation of Graphite in Chloroform with a Pyrene-Containing Hyperbranched Polyethylene As Stabilizer to Render Pyrene-Functionalized High-Quality Graphene

Abstract:The use of stabilizers in liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in common solvents, and concurrently render functionalized graphene by adsorbing them on the exfoliated graphene surface. Thus, the exploration of novel stabilizers is especially important for graphene liquid-phase production and related applications. Herein, we report the successful application of a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE@Py) as the stabilizer for graphite exfoliation in chloroform. The polymer has a global hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple covalently bonded pyrene moieties as branch ends. It can be synthesized via ethylene copolymerization using a Pd-diimine catalyst under mild conditions, 0.1 MPa/25 degrees C. Due to the cooperative effect of the CH-pi and pi-pi interactions between the HBPE@Py and graphene surface, some of the polymer is irreversibly adsorbed on the latter, thus effectively preventing their re-stacking and concurrently rendering pyrene-functionalized graphene. This allows us to obtain stable dispersions of few-layer graphene with relatively high concentrations (0.10-0.50 mg mL(-1)) and exfoliation efficiencies (1.6-13.0%). The resultant graphene is confirmed to be high-quality and shown to be highly stable when dispersed in chloroform, even the free polymer has been thoroughly removed. From the dispersion, a flexible, conductive graphene film and polymer-based graphene nanocomposites have been successfully prepared. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel versatile approach for the bulk and facile preparation of graphene dispersion with high concentration is developed, via sonication of graphite that is intercalated by a mixture of benzene derivative and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Subsequently, graphene nanoscrolls, a new structure between graphene and nanotubes are obtained by heat treatment of graphene sheets.
