Abstract:We demonstrate a nonvolatile multilevel optical switch used by GST integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This optical switch works by the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:Thiazole orange-modified diarylethene (1) shows weak fluorescence but no photochromism in aqueous solution. When binding with DNA, the fluorescence of 1 is enhanced drastically and the photochromic reactivity is unlocked. Abstract:There has been an enormous demand for commercial label-free DNA sensors in a diverse range of fields including pre-emptive medicine, diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food industry. Addressing the need for sensitive, selective and facile DNA sensors, we demonstrate a novel switch on/off sensor design that utilizes sandwich hybridization between photoluminescent anionic conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) bound captureprobe coated onto magnetic beads, target and the signaling probe. The hybridization-readout in our sensor was monitored by either fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET, switch-on) or superquenching (switch-off) depending on the type of signaling probe used. Moreover recent designs that utilize beads for sensing DNA have been limited towards using electrostatic interactions or intercalation of dyes to observe FRET. To our knowledge this is the first report of a switch on/off sensor utilizing either FRET or superquenching thus providing flexibility for future development of such rapid, facile and sensitive DNA sensors. The FRET-based sensor was investigated by optimizing the reaction parameters and selectivity. A low detection limit of 240 fmol in 2 mL of SSC buffer was achieved.

Abstract:Other than carrying the code of life, in the past three decades, DNA has played an important role in weaving two- and even three-dimensional nanostructures by taking advantage of its programmable sequences and precise recognition properties. The highly specific base-pairing interactions of DNA molecules not only allow for the building of static DNA nanostructures, but also enable the construction of machine-like devices capable of responding to external stimuli, such as pH, small molecules, light, electricity, and temperature, thus performing tasks otherwise beyond our reach. This review summarizes DNA-based switchable devices and materials, particularly where the responsiveness of DNA is caused by changes in secondary structures, and more importantly, where such stimuli-responsive processes are reversible. This review covers DNA-based devices and materials from smart surfaces and responsive nanopores/nanochannels to DNA hydrogels, which are expected to be designed with even more intelligence in the future.

Abstract:A photochromic all-optical switch in telecommunication-grade fiber is fabricated by filling a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot resonator with a spiro-oxazine solution. The narrow linewidth of the resonator allows for a high sensitivity of the resonance wavelengths to the index change. The switch is controlled by low intensity UV light exposure, and operation at infrared telecommunication wavelengths is demonstrated. The switching speed on the order of minutes has been achieved. Abstract:Rationally designed photonic complexes promoting the efficient collection and harnessing of excitation energy are key to artificial photosynthesis and optoelectronics. The precise control over the geometric arrangement and energy flow of photonic materials is in great demand. Mimicking natural light-harvesting systems in terms of multi-pigment complexes well organized by protein scaffolds, herein, we report programmable photonic materials directed by structural DNA templates. Four-helix-bundle DNA origami was used to guide the assembly of the cyanine dye K21 to form closely packed dye aggregates exhibiting strong excitonic coupling between chromophores. This enables sub-micron-scale exciton migration, demonstrated by spectroscopic measurements and theoretical modeling. The DNA-templated dye aggregates acting as “excitonic wires” could mediate directional energy transfer over a half-micrometer distance and were further programmed to achieve geometric complexity and modular bottom-up fabrication of higher order photonic architectures. This work offers a rich toolbox to design and create complex photonic devices and excitonic networks.

Abstract:The base sequence of nucleic acid encodes structural and functional properties into the biopolymer. Structural information includes the formation of duplexes, G-quadruplexes, i-motif, and cooperatively stabilized assemblies. Functional information encoded in the base sequence involves the strand-displacement process, the recognition properties by aptamers, and the catalytic functions of DNAzymes. This Review addresses the implementation of the information encoded in nucleic acids to develop DNA switches. A DNA switch is a supramolecular nucleic acid assembly that undergoes cyclic, switchable, transitions between two distinct states in the presence of appropriate triggers and counter triggers, such as pH value, metal ions/ligands, photonic and electrical stimuli. Applications of switchable DNA systems to tailor switchable DNA hydrogels, for the controlled drug-release and for the activation of switchable enzyme cascades, are described, and future perspectives of the systems are addressed.

Abstract:DNA is a unique nanoscale material that enables the design and synthesis of nanoscale structures of prescribed shape and functionality via programmable self-assembly. Angstrom-level control over the location and orientation of programmed Watson-Crick basepairs offers the ability to scaffold and spatially organize optically active materials to yield novel optical and photonic properties. Here, we present two distinct strategies for designing and synthesizing DNA-based photonic materials, and emphasize the roles of computational modeling in this process. First, we use computational modeling to design mechanically stiff nanoscale DNA "molds" that have user-specified three-dimensional cavity with a nucleating gold seed, which grows in solution to fill and replicate the cavity. We demonstrate the capability of producing nanoparticles of various shapes and materials that exhibit plasmonic properties that are consistent with electromagnetism simulations. In silico design of stiff molds of nearly arbitrary geometric cavities with resulting optical properties that are prescribed a priori enable a property-by-design framework for producing inorganic particles with prescribed functional properties. Second, we use DNA to program the scaffolding of chromophores into complex three-dimensional assemblies, enabling controlled energy transfer at the nanoscale. This strategy is inspired by nature, where cells use organized assemblies of chromophores to capture photons and funnel the resulting excitons toward the reaction center where they are converted to chemical energy. In particular, the close-packing of chromophores results in the emergence of quantum coherence that can strongly affect exciton transport across the structure. Using Förster energy transfer modeling, as well as a hybrid molecular dynamics and quantum mechanical approach, we demonstrate how emergent excitonic and light-harvesting properties of diverse DNA-dye assemblies can be elucidated.

Abstract:Macroscopically realizable applications of DNA-based molecular devices require individual molecules to cooperate with each other. However, molecular crowding usually introduces disorder to the system, thus jeopardizing the molecular cooperation and slowing down their functional performance dramatically. A challenge remaining in this field is to obtain both smarter response and better cooperation simultaneously. Here, we report a swift-switching DNA nanodevice that is enhanced by an alternating electric field. The device, self-assembled from folded four-stranded DNA motifs, can robustly switch between closed and open states in smart response to pH stimulus, of which the closed state forms a nanometer-height container that is impermeable to small molecules. This character was used to directly and non-specifically catch and release small molecules emulating mechanical hand in a controllable way. The alternating electric field was used to accelerate molecular cooperative motion during the device switching, which in turn shortened the closing time remarkably to thirty seconds.

Abstract:The intricate arrangement of numerous and closely placed chromophores on nanoscale scaffolds can lead to key photonic applications ranging from optical waveguides and antennas to signal-enhanced fluorescent sensors. In this regard, the self-assembly of dye-appended DNA sequences into programmed photonic architectures is promising. However, the dense packing of dyes can result in not only compromised DNA assembly (leading to ill-defined structures and precipitates) but also to essentially nonfluorescent systems (due to pi-pi aggregation). Here, we introduce a two-step "tether and mask" strategy wherein large porphyrin dyes are first attached to short G-quadruplex-forming sequences and then reacted with per-O-methylated beta-cyclodextrin (PM beta CD) caps, to form supramolecular synthons featuring the porphyrin fluor fixed into a masked porphyrin lantern (PL) state, due to intramolecular host-guest interactions in water. The PL-DNA sequences can then be self-assembled into cyclic architectures or unprecedented G-wires tethered with hundreds of porphyrin dyes. Importantly, despite the closely arrayed PL units (similar to 2 nm), the dyes behave as bright chromophores (up to 180-fold brighter than the analogues lacking the PM beta CD masks). Since other self-assembling scaffolds, dyes, and host molecules can be used in this modular approach, this work lays out a general strategy for the bottom-up aqueous self-assembly of bright nanomaterials containing densely packed dyes.

Abstract:A low-power all-optical switching is presented based on the all-optical tunable Fano-like resonance in a two-dimensional nonlinear ferroelectric photonic crystal made of polycrystalline lithium niobate. An asymmetric Fano-like line shape is achieved in the transmission spectrum by using two cascaded and uncoupled photonic crystal microcavities. The physical mechanism underlying the all-optical switching is attributed to the dynamic shift of the Fano-like resonance peak caused by variations in the dispersion relations of the photonic crystal structure induced by pump light. A large switching efficiency of 61% is reached under excitation of a weak pump light with an intensity as low as 1 MW cm(-2).

Abstract:AbstractToday, a consensus that DNA working as a molecular wire shows promise in nanoscale electronics is reached. Considering that the “ON-OFF” switch is the basis of a logic circuit, the switch of DNA-mediated charge transport (DNA CT) should be conquered. Here, on the basis of chemical or electrochemical deposition and stripping of DNA-templated copper nanoclusters (CuNCs), we develop an “ON-OFF” nanoswitch for DNA CT. While CuNCs are deposited, the DNA CT is blocked, which can be also recovered after stripping the CuNCs. A switch cycle can be completed in a few seconds and can be repeated for many times. Moreover, by regulating the amount of reagents, deposition/stripping time, applied potential, etc., the switch is adjustable to make the wire at either an “ON-OFF” state or an intermediate state. We believe that this concept and the successful implementation will promote the practical application of DNA wire one step further.

Abstract:A DNA photonic nanowire with tunable FRET signals was fabricated on the basis of cascaded toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement reactions. Different DNA inputs were added to trigger the reaction network, and the corresponding FRET signals were obtained. Compared to the direct hybridization, this design is sensitive for 2 nM targets within 20 min and also causes color changes of the solution with blue-light excitation. It could also be applied in live cells to monitor MicroRNA with a simple modification which might become a low-cost method for further application in the future.

Abstract:We study all-optical switches operating on a single four-level atom with the $N$-type transition configuration in a two-mode nanofiber cavity with a significant length (on the order of $20$ mm) and a moderate finesse (on the order of 300) under the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) conditions. In our model, the gate and probe fields are the quantum nanofiber-cavity fields excited by weak classical light pulses, and the parameters of the $D_2$ line of atomic cesium are used. We examine two different switching schemes. The first scheme is based on the effect of the presence of a photon in the gate mode on the EIT of the probe mode. The second scheme is based on the use of EIT to store a photon of the gate mode in the population of an appropriate atomic level, which leads to the reduction of the transmission of the field in the probe mode. We investigate the dependencies of the switching contrast on various parameters, such as the cavity length, the mirror reflectivity, and the detunings and powers of the cavity driving field pulses. For a nanofiber cavity with fiber radius of 250 nm, cavity length of 20 mm, and cavity finesse of 313 and a cesium atom at a distance of 200 nm from the fiber surface, we numerically obtain a switching contrast on the order of about 67% for the first scheme and of about 95% for the second scheme. These switching operations require small mean numbers of photons in the nanofiber cavity gate and probe modes.

Abstract:A gradual transition from electrical to optical networks is accompanying the rapid progress of telecommunication technology. The urge for enhanced transmission capacity and speed is dictating this trend. In fact, large volumes of data encoded on optical signals can be transported rapidly over long distances. Their propagation along specific routes across a communication network is ensured by a combination of optical fibers and optoelectronic switches. It is becoming apparent, however, that the interplay between the routing electrical stimulations and the traveling optical signals will not be able to support the terabit-per-second capacities that will be needed in the near future. Electrical inputs cannot handle the immense parallelism potentially possible with optical signals. Operating principles to control optical signals with optical signals must be developed. Molecular and supramolecular switches are promising candidates for the realization of innovative materials for information technology. Binary digits can be encoded in their chemical, electrical, or optical inputs and outputs to execute specific logic functions. We have developed a simple strategy to gate optical signals with optical signals by using a photoactive molecular switch. We have demonstrated that NAND, NOR, and NOT operations can be implemented exclusively with optical inputs and optical outputs coupling from one to three switching elements. Our remarkably simple approach to all-optical switching might lead to the development of a new generation of devices for digital processing and communication technology.

Abstract:We report a nanocomposite material possessing large nonlinear optical coefficients and fast response simultaneously, which is made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with Ag nanoparticles. Under resonant excitation of the polymer matrix and Ag nanoparticles, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A nonlinear response time of 35 ps is achieved due to the energy transfer from organic molecules to Ag nanoparticles. An ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching with an ultralow pump intensity of 0.2 MW/cm2 is realized.
