Abstract:A dam breaking is a major flood catastrophe. The shape, depth, and wave Doppler effect of initial water flow are all modified as a result of the interaction of the water body with downstream structures after a dam breach, forming a diffraction and reflection flow field. This study investigates the dam breaking problem of a single liquid, by creating a two-dimensional simplified numerical model using the VOF approach, analysing the interaction and effect between barriers of various forms and the dam failure flow, and explains the problem of a complex flow mechanism involving significant deformation of the free surface of a medium. According to the findings, obstacles of varying forms could obstruct the dam break’s water flow to various degrees, and the viscous dissipation characteristic of the water body at the edge of the obstacle is closely related to the slope of the site. The numerical simulation presented in this study is validated, demonstrating its accuracy for both the gate-pulling and downstream wet-bed scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a Coupled Level Set and Volume Of Fluid and Immersed Boundary (CLSVOF/IB) method, and apply it to simulating the interaction between dam-break flow and stationary obstacles. The projection method which adopts the second-order Adams-Bashforth algorithm is performed for solving the Navier-Stokes equations on a fixed staggered Cartesian grid. The Point Successive Over-Relaxation (PSOR) method is then employed to solve the discretized linear system of the Poisson pressure equation. For fluid-fluid interface treatment, the CLSVOF model is implemented using the Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing (THINC) scheme with the Weighted Linear Interface Calculation (WLIC), and the level set function which is a distance function is used to calculate interface normal vectors. For solid-fluid interface treatment, we adopt the direct forcing IB method which can be easily extended to three-dimensional simulations. The artificial momentum forcing term is applied at certain points in cells containing both fluid and solid, which imposes a velocity condition to drive the solid body motion. The proposed CLSVOF/IB model is used to simulate dam-break flow and its interaction with stationary structures, and the results agree well with numerical and experimental data in the literature. 1D Flow Simulation with Irregular Cross-Sections Using the Pre-Balanced Shallow Water Equations

Abstract:With the possible climate change and increased pace of urbanization in the century, urban flooding has caused more and more attentions nowadays. Shallow water equations are widely used to reproduce the flow hydrodynamics of flooding around the urban areas, which have been proved a powerful tool for flood risk assessment and evacuation management, like river flow or flowing at drainage networks with irregular cross-sections at 1D scale. Over the last two decades, Godunov-type schemes have became popular for its robustness treating complex flow phenomenons. When tacking complex topography in the framework of Godunov-type scheme, sourer term needs to be treated property to preserve steady state, that flux gradient and sourer term are balanced. Capart et al. (2003) reconstructed the momentum flux by considering the balance of hydrostatic pressure with the approximated water surface level, which has the ability to tackle the irregular and non-prismatic channel flow with complex topography. This approximation is exact for two cases: 1) rectangular and prismatic channel; 2) water surface is horizontal. However, for other cases, approximation is employed to achieve the hydrostatic equilibrium, which has reduced the accuracy of the numerical solution and increased the complexity for the model implementation. In this work, we present a new well-balanced numerical scheme for simulating 1D frictional shallow water flow with irregular cross-sections over complex topography involving wetting and drying. The proposed scheme solves, in a finite volume Godunov-type framework, a set of pre-balanced shallow water equations derived by considering pressure balancing (Liang and Marche, 2009). HLL approximated Riemann solver is adopted for the flux calculation at the cell interface. Non-negative reconstruction of Riemann state (Audusse et al., 2004) and local bed modification (Liang, 2010) produce stable and well-balanced solutions to shallow water flow hydrodynamics. Bed slope source term can be approximated using central difference and no special treatment is needed for wet and dry bed. The friction source term is discretized using a splitting implicit scheme and limiting value of friction force is used to ensure stability for the dry bottom (Liang and Marche, 2009). The new numerical scheme is validated against two theoretical benchmark tests and then compared with the validated shallow water model with circular and trapezoid cross-sections over complex topography involving wetting and drying. Abstract:Based on the depth-averaged governing equations for sediment-laden flows,the coefficient of permeable density and a resistance term are introduced to represent vegetation effects on flow and sediment transport,implementing a fully coupled system among flow,sediment transport,bed and vegetation.The modified governing equations are solved by the finite volume method along with the Godunov-type central upwind scheme for estimating the numerical flux.The model is validated by experimental data of a dam-break flow over mobile beds.Numerical case studies of idealized dam-break flow over mobile and vegetated beds are conducted to shed light on the vegetation effects.It is shown that the vegetation complicates the pattern of erosion and deposition downstream of the dam site,induces water level increase upstream of the vegetated zone and water level decrease downstream.These findings would help flood risk management.

Abstract:Our goal was to develop a robust algorithm for numerical simulation of one-dimensional shallow-water flow in a complex multiply-connected channel network with arbitrary geometry and variable topography. We apply a central-upwind scheme with a novel reconstruction of the open water surface in partially flooded cells that does not require additional correction. The proposed reconstruction and an exact integration of source terms for momentum conservation equation provide positivity preserving and well-balanced features of the scheme for various wet-dry states. We use two models based on continuity equation and mass and momentum conservation equations integrated for a control volume around the channel junction to its treatment. These junction models permit to simulate a subcritical and supercritical flow in a channel network. Numerous numerical experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed numerical algorithm and a good agreement of numerical results with exact solutions, experimental data, and results of the previous numerical studies. The proposed new specialized test on inundation and drying of initially dry channel network shows the merits of the new numerical algorithm to simulate the subcritical/supercritical open water flows in the network.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved well-balanced Godunov-type 2-D finite volume model with structured grids to simulate shallow flows with wetting and drying fronts over an irregular topography. The intercell flux is computed using a central upwind scheme, which is a Riemann-problem-solver-free method for hyperbolic conservation laws. The nonnegative reconstruction method for the water depth is implemented to resolve the stationary or wet/dry fronts. The bed slope source term is discretized using a central difference method to capture the static flow state over the irregular topography. Second-order accuracy in space is achieved by using the slope limited linear reconstruction method. With the proposed method, the model can avoid the partially wetting/drying cell problem and maintain the mass conservation. The proposed model is tested and verified against three theoretical benchmark tests and two experimental dam break flows. Further, the model is applied to predict the maximum water level and the flood arrival time at different gauge points for the Malpasset dam break event. The predictions agree well with the numerical results and the measurement data published in literature, which demonstrates that with the present model, a well-balanced state can be achieved and the water depth can be nonnegative when the Courant number is kept less than 0.25.

Abstract:A hydrodynamic model for open-channel networks is established using the newly proposed junction-point water stage prediction and correction(JPWSPC) method,which treats backwater effects at the junctions.In the model,the Saint-Venant equations are discretized using the Preissmann scheme.The resulting equations are solved using the Newton-Raphson method.The model needs neither specific node-numbering nor setting up and solving branch equations.Thus the model is applicable to both dentritic and looped channel networks,and more robust and efficient.

Abstract:To meet the needs of quickly response for disaster forecast and pre-alarm and emergency disposition on the public safety emergency platform,a hydrodynamic model of flood routing in watercourse is established.The equations are settled through the convenient Kulan's format of the diagnostic line method to obtain the temporal and spatial variation relations of the water level and flux along the watercourse.Moreover,the visualization method of flood routing based on GIS platform is studied.Finally,the model is tested by a practical watercourse flood routing simulation example.

Abstract:The watershed modeling system, WASH123D, simulates coupled water flow and transport in one - dimensional channel network, two-dimensional overland, and three-dimensional subsurface porous media. The governing equations for surface flow are based on the shallow water equations or their approximate forms (diffusion wave and kinematic wave models). The modified Richards equation is applied for subsurface flow. Developed for generic application, hydraulic structures, such as weirs/gates, culverts, pumping, retention ponds, and levees/dikes, are incorporated into the model. In the surface flow components, the numerical solution for both one-dimensional (channels) and two- dimensional (overland) full shallow water equations is based on the Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element method. The method of characteristi cs (MOC) is applied for the advection terms. The Galerkin finite element method is used for the turbulent diffusion terms. Parabolic type governing equations of the diffusion wave model are solved by the Galerkin finite element method. The pure advection kinematic wave models are solved by Lagrangian method. In the subsurface flow component, Galerkin finite element method is used to solve the modified Richards equation. Internal coupling among overland and channel flow, overland and subsurface flow, and channel and subsurface flow is also considered.

Abstract:An unstructured finite-volume model is presented for simulating dam-break water flows over complex topographies.The model uses the Roe's approximate Riemann solution in the calculation of flow flux,the characteristic decomposition method is used for upwind scheme in dealing with the bed slope source term,and the semi-implicit approach is used for the friction source terms.A robust procedure is adapted to efficiently and accurately simulate the movement of a wet/dry boundary.The established model shows good stability and accuracy as it is tested with two sets of measured data,hence it can be used to simulate dam-break water flows over complex topographies.

Abstract:A numerical model based on the finite difference solution of Saint-Venant equation for one-dimensional unsteady river flows and the shallow water equation for vertically integrated two-dimensional flows in the lake is employed to study the propagation of flood waves in Jingjiang River and Dongting Lake. Three different types of flood occurred in 1996, 1999 and 2002, respectively, are computed. All numerical results are shown in fairly good agreement with observed data.

Abstract:Owing to complex and irregular bottom topography and the large longitudinal scale, the hydrodynamic simulation of river networks is often dealt as one-dimensional problems in examinations of river-lake systems. Traditional two-dimensional models, which contain the bottom topography (depth) information of just one point in an element, couldn't escape the conflict between computational effort and simulation precision when being applied to river networks: refined grids causes huge computational amount and harsh limits to algorithms, while course girds could not represent the bottom irregularities, resulting in a low precision. Here, a new two-dimensional model based on improved shallow flow equations, which consider the bottom topography, is developed to cope with river networks domain. Owing to the topography information of multiple points is considered in one element, the proposed model could get a satisfying result with a coarse mesh. The new 2D model for river networks is tested by a virtual example and resolving the Sanya River network. Numerical simulations show that the model can be a useful tool for complex river networks problems.

Abstract:Combining flows often occur in open channel networks of drainage systems and river engineering. Open-channel junction flows were analyzed by solving the depth-averaged two-dimensional, elliptic Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the Hanjalic-Launder (H-L) modification to the k-e turbulence model without the free surface "rigid lid" approximation with an efficient finite-volume procedure. The model can also analyze flows with separation. The model was used to analyze the relative importance of various factors and was compared with laboratory measurements. The H-L modification produced much better simulations of the separation zone size with 20% better accuracy than the standard k-e model. The H-L modification was then used to study the characteristic of junction flows and the separation zones with different discharge ratios. The simulational results show that separation zone size decreases as the discharge ratio of the upstream main channel to the downstream channel increases.

Abstract:The paper presents a high resolution fully two-dimensional finite-volume numerical model based on structured grids for unsteady flow over topography with complex boundary during wet and dry movement. The model regards the fully two-dimensional shallow water equations which correctly balance the flux gradient and source terms as the governing equation, and uses the Godunov type finite volume shock-capturing schemes HLLC to compute flow flux. Its spatial and temporal accuracy are improved to two order accuracy by the slop limiter and predict-correct method called as MUSCL-Hancock and slope source terms and friction source terms are treated with central difference scheme and fully implicit method respectively. A robust procedure is adapted to efficiently and accurately simulate the movement of wet and dry boundary and a method of high simulative precision for complex boundary, simplicity of treatment and high calculation efficiency is used for dealing with the computational boundary. Finally, two tests are used to validate the solver of the presented model, and the numerical simulation results indicate that the developed model can accurately capture flow processes over irregular and shows good stability and accuracy.
Numerical simulation of complex subcritical flows in channel networks with structures

Abstract:Due to backwater effects, it has long been a challenging problem to numerically simulate complex subcritical flows in channel networks. The often existing structures in networks make the problem more difficult. In this paper the junction-point water stage prediction and correction (JPWSPC) method is utilized to treat both the connecting conditions at the junctions and structures, and the physically interconnected reaches are numerically decoupled. The algorithm is verified using a benchmark example and the results demonstrate it is capable of modelling complex subcritical flows in channel networks with structures. Copyright.

Abstract:A non-horizontal multi-layer element model is developed for the simulation for the flow in natural rivers. Either Cartesian coordinates or sigma coordinates will experience difficulties in dealing with the water surface and irregular bed topography of natural rivers. To create the surface-fitting and non-deformed cells, the newly developed model divides the water column into several layers with non-horizontal interfaces which are nearly parallel to the water surface. The irregular bed topography is also represented by the layered integration between non-horizontal interfaces. Two case studies for the flow in a straight channel and the flow in an S-shaped meander channel are conducted with good agreement between the numerical predictions and the analytical or experimental results. The model is further applied for the investigation of the flow in a 12-km-long and 3.46-m-drop reach of the Yangtze River with the water surface evaluation and the stream-wise velocity satisfactory accordance with the observed data.

Abstract:An integrated strategy coupling GIS with two-dimension hydrodynamic model is explored to simulate the flooding inundation in the upper reaches of Huangpu River. DEM data, hydraulic engineering map and other available geospatial data are used and aid to generate the computational grid, while, some treatments of interior and exterior boundary conditions, and calculations of variable resistance terms are discussed. Then the hydrodynamic model, Delft3D-Flow, is applied to predict the submerged area, as well as the distribution of water depth and velocity. Finally, the simulated result is processed and the dynamic visual simulation of flooding is developed based on component GIS technology, which will provide scientific methods for experts to make flood risk map and loss assessment.

Abstract:Given recent flood events in Indonesia, understanding the hydraulic dynamics in open channels, mirroring real-world drainage and river scenarios, has become paramount. To address this, our research employs a numerical model to simulate water flow in both regular and irregular open channels. Specifically, we utilize the Saint–Venant Equations to explore fluid flow evolution in irregular channels. This model is solved numerically using a staggered finite volume method. We complement our research with laboratory experiments and validate our numerical model against the data collected. Furthermore, we cross-reference our numerical results with those from HEC-RAS to examine the robustness and accuracy of our model in predicting water levels and velocities under varying conditions. To deepen our understanding, we conduct sensitivity analyses that offer valuable insights into the core factors influencing water levels and velocity. This knowledge provides a foundation for practitioners to normalize rivers.
