Abstract:Agricultural straw's (AS) lignocellulosic complex structure, which influences methane, causes it to disintegrate more slowly during anaerobic digestion (AD). One efficient technique for partial disintegration is the pretreatment. In the present study, rice straw (RS) and canola straw (CS) with buffalo dung (BD) by anaerobically co-digested (AcoD) were used for optimizing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) to produce maximum biomethane in the continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs). Two CSTRs i.e. digester-A and digester-B having HRTs (30d, 25d, 20d, and 15d) and OLRs (2.66, 3.66, 4.16 and 4.66) gVS/L/d were applied considering mixing fractions of RS: BD (30:70) and CS: BD (40:60). The straws were pretreated with Ca(OH) 2 initially for seven days. Results found that chemical reagent significantly disintegrated RS and CS lignin content and improves the generation of methane. The digester-B at HRT 20 days and OLR 4.16 gVS/L/d greatly enhanced methane resulting in 330.8, and 371.5 mL/gVS, whereas, digester -A at HRT 20 days and OLR 3.66 gVS/L/d substantially improved methane resulting in 262.7, and 291.7 mL/gVS respectively. Moreover, model i.e. S-Gompertz is well fitted on experimental findings. The study recommends that the management of AS could improve the productivity of energy in terms of biomethane, rather than burning it in open fields.
